Hmm... Seems like an underhanded trick, but since Brisco is one of my favorite shows, I'll bite! I found it in the closeout section of Miniature Market, vis,
http://www.miniaturemarket.com/closeout_deals

AND IT DROPPED ANOTHER TWELVE BUCKS SINCE I ORDERED IT A WEEK AGO??? That's more than twenty percent! Awh geez... There were also only three left after I ordered, not ONE HUNDRED AND TWO. Too bad I'm not willing to stock and resell the things.

They do free shipping on orders over $75, and I assume shipping is appreciable on this bad boy, so I threw in $40 worth of Clix and Reaper minis. I keep a complicated list in Word of what site has the best price on each individual mini (just a little OCD), and that's a good site, so I got quite a few. Enough to cover the side of my desk right here. Which, of course, makes me happy to no end...

Those AVP sets are looking better and better, since I've seen them on a few second market sites for $18-ish. Ahh, money, I won't need you once I have just a few more games...

If not for the excellent secondary market sites - and my own amazing luck at picking boosters - I too would've sworn off the collectible games. I don't think even that would've kept my new Great Cthulhu off my desk, that $50 in my pocket, or this smile off my face...

Besides, what's the alternative? Give Games Workshop more of my money?? PFF!!

Thread: I Was Born With A Crooked Cthulhu

Or maybe I played with it too much and now it's twisted.

In actual fact(!), I just got my Great Cthulhu in the mail today after ordering it at awesome clearance price. First off, what an impressive mini!! "Mini" being a bit of a misnomer. It's massive, heavy, tall, and gorgeous. Pictures online don't do it justice. It may not be proper gargantuan scale as in the stories or the excellent Chaosium RPG artwork, but it dwarfs the HeroClix Sentinel by a mile, and that is quite unwieldy enough for me.

*delicate and giddy shudder*

The only itty-bitty problem is, the balance is not quite centered. The center of mass is just a bit to the right as viewed head-on, in such a precarious way that it topples over on some surfaces previously thought level. After examination, I don't believe this is at all a factory defect, but a result of how the sculpt was based, which is at an angle of some... three degrees. It's only noticeable because the thing is so tall! But, because it IS so tall and so heavy, and I intend to display it as a statue, I need to correct this three degrees of lean.

I am not willing to alter the piece, such as shaving the feet at an angle to it stands straight. No. The easiest thing to do would be to put a wedge under the entire base to correct the lean, or possibly construct an even larger, decorated base to base the base! Attaching a counter-weight does not seem feasible.

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions, or better yet, experience and solutions? Anyone else have a Cthulhu that curves to the right?

Little boxes that clamp onto the base and protect the figure perhaps?

I use plastic craft organizers purchased from Wal-Mart (arts & crafts section). Each one has 17 compartments (16 single; 1 double-high) that will hold your average HeroClix/HorrorClix miniatures. In a few cases where a character is larage, or has extended wings or other over-sized features, I merely cut out a plastic side or two to fit.

Each box was less than $2.00

Measurements: 10.625 inches X 7.25 inches X 2 inches
(27cm X 18.4cmX 5 cm)

I'd need to have the rules in front of me to be sure, but I think that it does count as a monster for purposes of breaking away/moving up to it.

The only reason for point scoring would be if you fight a larger standard battle with more models (say the queen and all the other aliens minis against an army of equal size).
Is the Egg Base considered a monster, i.e.
- do you have to stop your movement when you become adjacent to it?
- do you have to make a break away roll when moving away from it?

Scenario #1:

The winner of the scenario is decided by whether the Queen breaks free. Still, it is stated in the scenario rules that the opponent gets points from slaying minions. Since the winner is decided by the fate of the Queen, is there really any point in keeping score?
Thread: Re: Storytelling?

The only thing that really earns HorrorClix the title of a "Storytelling" game is the fact that it's possible to base the game on so-called "scenarios" other than those listed on Subplot cards. For me, half of the fun of the is matching scenarios to maps in a way that allows for a balanced game.

Plenty of fans already have posted suggestions for new game scenarios online. Since this aspect of the game really depends as much on player inventiveness as the internal mechanics of the game, though, I agree that it's a bit of a stretch to make it the basis for actually marketing the thing.

They now seems to just be chasing licensed properties which is probably a sign of desperation.

I wouldn't call it desperation so much as opportunism with a hefty dose of fanboy marketing. Seriously, how many people even play Halo Clix or that Battlestar Galactica card game anymore? And do they really expect the Star Wars pocketmodel game to hold up against the WotC miniatures variant? But diehards will still be willing to stock up on the latest Heroclix expansion just to get the next version of Spiderman or Batman. Meanwhile, clever, original, less-competitive games like HorrorClix, Tsuro, or Rocketman will be left to the EBay merchants.

Well, at least one last HorrorClix expansion is on its way, and maybe the awesome Santa Claus figure will get a Chanukah Harry sidekick, complete with his nine-bladed katar and dreidal grenades.

What? I find myself suprised to be saying I missed the REV system that Wizkids have used in previous sets, some of the monsters in Nightmares needed stronger/weaker versions as optional.
Nevermind, my Horrorclix will hopefully still see some action yet!

Thread: Re: Storytelling?

I'm not too sure myself... I assumed they got the idea from the publishers who originally said the game has come away from meat grinding style play and onto more story based play (along those lines anyway) what with the addition of plot twists, subplots and victims.

It is possible to play "story" style games- like a load of Field Agents going in to clense an area of a Demon infestation. You just need to take specific models, victims and plot twists on a certain map. To do this you need lots of models and different maps though, and I'm pretty sure some players of the game don't have the resources. Otherwise the traditional meat grinding is still the best way to play the game anyway!

I hear you about the 'goose, I am pretty disapointed that they killed the game right before air support finally materialzied in SST, then went ga ga over battlefield evolution. I still have about 1000 points for all three armies, and several ACTA fleets their new business strategy (let somone else make the minis) seems to stem from the unsuspected success of Victory at Sea, yet that game really does not have any really contemporary competition, other than A&A miniatures war at sea, which I have not heard a lot of good things about. Sure there are plenty of WWII naval games but not many as new or as slickly produced with simple rules as VAS. This will be different when comparing BFE; World at war to say Flames of War, where they are going to be in direct competition. Not to mention FOW has an installed fanbase and a full minis line, besides the fact that their RPGs have been lagging schedule wise, (traveller available in Feb, no mar, no April!!) Mongoose started out as a RPG publisher, and that's probably still where their strength is. They tried to do minis, did OK for a while, but never quite got the process figured out.

But I'm not clear the businesses are related. WK started out as a minis game publisher, and has pretty much stuck with that (with a few exceptions). And while HeroClix is obviously heavily license-based (and always has been), I don't count Pirates as a license-based product. One Disney-themed expansion does not a product line make. I'm not sure they're chasing licenses any more than they have in the past. It's just that they are only proposing one new game for the year (according to the presentation). So when you say 100% of their proposed games are license-based, you're right, but I'm not clear I want to read too much into it.

Well, a company PPT presentation leaked that stated that the last full expansion will be released in March of 2008; they may still make some action packs that retail for less than $30. In a few months the high price won't be a factor. Since they only released 4 full sets and some action packs, the price to collect everything will be much less than it would have been had the game lived.

Thread: New Nightmares Expansion for 2008

Just in case anyone is interested, the next set of Horrorclix is due to be released in the next few months.

Nightmares looks to have only 60 models in its set, but they may all be unique rather then having the usual Rookie/Experienced/Veteran system used so far.

They will also come in a larger booster pack because the Nightmares boosters will each contain 5 models instead of 4 as in previous sets. It also looks as if there will be large double base monsters too! Release date is currently set to be March 2008...

There is also a Freddie vs Jason action pack due out this year. This will be a collectors set similar to the AVP sets, containing a map and victims. Can't wait!

To see a few images of the cool models from these upcoming releases take a look on www.itswickedfun.net.

Thread: Re: Sell me on Horrorclix!

I don't demo the game but I love Horrorclix!

I agree that if you are a bit of a collector you should stay clear of CMGs, but unfortunately I don't heed my own advice and have loads of Horrorclix! They can be expensive but as already mentioned with all the shops (especially where you are in the USA) that sell singles, you only need to get the ones you want!

The game itself is great, it's a gigantic improvement on Heroclix and is easy to learn and quick to play. I've only had two people not like it out of all the people I have shown it to (one of them apparently didn't like mini' games of any kind, whilst the other who was used to Star Wars minis couldn't cope with not being able to move and attack in the same turn). On the other hand, someone I showed it to became as fanatical about it as I am and started spending fortunes on buying them all, whilst another asks to play it every time he sees me and he gets all excited about it whenever we sit down for a game!

I would suggest you get the starter set, they are easy to find and relatively cheap. It's also essential, as it contains the rules, a double sided map and everything else you need to start playing (also contains some nice monsters that you can't get any other way). Once you have had a go you will be able to judge for yourself, because lets face it its the only way to find out if you like it!

Yeah, that's right. The maximum amount of counters you can have on a monster is two before they MUST pass for a turn. As already mentioned there is no "pushing" in Horrorclix, but monsters become vulnerable whilst they have two counters on them. The only ability that effects vulnerable monsters at the moment is Assassin (ignores the Stamina special ability- that's Toughness to a Heroclix player), although I imagine there will be one or two more abilities released in future expansions that effect vulnerable monsters.

As a follow-up to this I have another question. I have all three AvP sets (Aliens set, Predators set and Alien Queen set). I kind of expected the Aliens and/or Predator sets to be terated lied starters, but have learned that that is not the case.

Now, chances are I'm going to end up using these minis in another game system anyway, but, seeing as I have them I think I might as well try out the HorrorClix rules. If I download the HorrorClix rules from the WizKids site, is that going to be sufficient to use these or are there other components in a HorrorClix starter I'm going to need to do this?

If the only thing holding you back is collectibility, then eBay, online singles stores, and trading sites can be your friends. The starter set and several action packs are non-collectible anyway, so you can always get started with those and decide if the money sinkage is worth it for boosters later on. (Especially if you like Aliens vs. Predator, although net.wisdom says that the Predators are a bit overpowered.)

But, to be a little more specific on why I, personally, like this game:
1) The figures are cool.
2) The victim-chasing aspect of the game means you aren't always going to run into the middle and slug it out. There's in-game incentive to spread out a bit, to counter the natural concentration of firepower that occurs in wargames.
3) The game takes to scenarios really well. In fact, with subplot cards, even the basic line-em-up game can become a mini-scenario: you suddenly have extra incentive to rescue Cheerleaders, or slay Pizza Guys, or turn victims into Zombie minions instead of simply killing them off.

I would see if you can track down a demo. That will give you an idea of the game, and where you can go to trade if you do decide to jump into the collectible pit again. And if you can't find a demo today, try again in February: HorrorClix is currently between releases, but a new booster pack is coming out in February, along with a Freddy/Jason action pack for the straight horror fans out there.

(In the interests of disclosure, I do demo the game for WK. Not that they pay me or anything, but it might make me somewhat biased...)

There are three AVP sets available; the Aliens set, the Predator set, and the Alien Queen set.
The sets are all part of the Horrorclix game system, which does play in a pretty similar way to Heroclix, including point based battles.
The Alien and Predator sets both contain 500pts of clix each, meaning you can have a balanced battle.
The Alien Queen set is another 450pts, meaning if you intend to take her against the Predators she is pretty much on her own (you do get a 40pt Alien with the Queen set though so you could still have a 500pt game, the Alien player would just be at 490pts).
Thread: Can somebody help me combine AVP with new Halo Actionclix??

For anyone who has played horrorclix and read the haloclix rules, can you please tell me the best way to combine Alien VS Predator horrorclix with Halo clix? I want my Master Chief to go up against the Alien Queen and a few Predators this weekend. The Halo Actionclix website says they're compatible. Any potential problems? Can you whip us all up a special set of rules?

Thanks!

Thread: Re: Jack the Ripper

I'm after it myself at the moment, it's harder for us here in the UK because there isn't alot of places that sell Horrorclix- I have to get all mine online.
There is normally a couple kicking about on ebay, but they tend to be very expensive because of the rarity.
Try putting "Horrorclix" into a search engine and hunt it down, a supplier must have one somewhere! Good Luck!
