Thread: Re: Part 5 and FINAL Midway Article

I'm not quite sure where you got your figures for changing the aircraft allocations, either on the carriers, or on Midway. I've read a bunch of accounts, and this is one area that I think AH actually did pretty well at...

Seriously, an F9 for those cheesy Brewster Buffalos that were barely flyable? Or a D9 for the Vindicators (better known as Wind Indicators by their pilots)? Even upping the torpedo strength of Midway to a T3 is really stretching it... Midway only had 4 TBF Avengers stationed there... a T2 is pushing it... each air factor is supposed to represent 3 planes. (I don't consider B26's as reliable torpedo planes, nor do I consider the PBY as a viable torpedo attack plane.)

I'm not sure that I would completely prohibit the landing of some of the Midway complement on carriers - I think the Avengers were probably carrier capable, and there were some Dauntless divebombers on Midway as well.

A more serious upgrade probably needs to be made to the majority of the Japanese cruiser force - these are seriously underrated by the game, both in surface gunnery, and in hit capacity.

I seriously disagree with your earlier statement about allowing B17 attacks, which historically, were pretty much totally ineffective against ships.

I believe you should have mentioned a little more in your search article about the Japanese use of ship searches. The light cruisers are pretty much, in the game, useless for anything else.

All in all, the articles were a respectable starting place. The Midway guide published by Avalon Hill was a little more comprehensive, and had some additional articles from the General that I really enjoyed. Totten and Greenwood's the Midway Thesis was probably the best of the articles I've read on the game.

Thread: Re: Part 3 - Midway - THE AMERICANS
This "strategy" was deemed unfair by Avalon Hill in several rules clarifications. The U.S. fleet must receive at least one airstrike west of Midway before it can "leave" the search board.

Thread: Re: Midway Capture Victory Points

In order to capture Midway the Japanese player must destroy its defenses and place the Atago on the Midway Island zone for 4 consecutive turns. The Atago enters the game on turn 10 (June 4th 0500). It takes at least 11 turns to reach Midway Island and four turns to invade, turn 24 (June 5th 1500) the soonest. This means that the American receives 5 points no matter what!
I think that this is unfair and the Americans should receive the points only if Midway remains under US control.
Dionysios
Midway was my first ever wargame back in the early 70's and now I'm playing it against my 13 year old son and having a great time. What it lacks in detail it makes up for in fun value. He and I are already contemplating changes we can make to add some detail.

I only played the game a couple of times in my long wargame history. It is all what you say a classic. One tactic I have heard of is for the Japanese to hold off their entry on the board untill more of their forces show up. The old, old guys I started wargaming with said they wrote Avalon Hill about if the Japanese could delay their enrty and AH said that they could. I never saw the letter, does anyone know if this is legal? If so it would make finding the Japanese a lot harder.

Great review, Paul. Of all of the AH classics, I think Midway and Africa Korps have aged the best. As you said, it is hardly the "last word" on the Battle of Midway, but it is realistic enough to be enjoyable and is a heck of a lot of fun to play as well. It and Jutland are still among my favorite naval wargames.

Thread: Incredible Victory, Incredible Game

Midway is among the Avalon Hill classics, a series of long box wargames noted for their simplicity and being among the first games to deal with what would latter become popular wargaming topics like Gettysburg and North Africa. Midway, which covers the most decisive and famous of all World War II naval battles, remains among the most popular of the Avalon Hill classics.

Gameplay (28 out of 30): At first glance Midway looks like a sort of advanced Battleship. Both sides set up their fleets on two maps that show the same area but that the opponent cannot see. They place at opposite ends of the map and search for each other, calling out areas like A-1. Sounds like Battleship right? The similarities end there.

The Double Blind Nature of the Game:

For one both sides are not equal. The Americans are outnumbered in all categories: aircraft, aircraft carriers, and especially surface warships. However the Americans have several advantages. For one they can search the whole field, while the Japanese are restricted to only searching nearby areas. The American carriers are all high quality, they have a lot of dive bombers, and in one turn one they triple their movement. All told it isn't hard for the Americans to find the Japanese first and plan accordingly, but they must move quickly, because while they have initial parity as the game drags on more and more Japanese ships arrive. It is advisable that the American player act with calculated daring which is in keeping with history.

Red Ships are Japanese, Black are American:

The Japanese player is in a much different spot. For one he knows the Americans are near (which Vice Admiral Nagumo did not know!) and he must take Midway Island by mid game, or watch the Americans build up victory points for holding the position. The Japanese can either wait for the rest of the fleet to come, or try the risky strategy of striking out for the Americans early. If they do it is advisable to avoid the air attack range of Midway, which has a small airforce of its own.

Making carrier attacks is what the game is all about. To do that you have to first ready your carriers for attack at least the turn before. This will however make them more vulnerable to attack, which makes four of the six Japanese carriers easy targets. Once you find an opposing fleet you can attack. Then you move to a battle board and decide which ships they will strike. Losses for aircraft can be brutal. The Japanese also can launch attacks on Midway Island in an effort to reduce the base defenses before the landing. Or they can wait for a battleship to start shelling the Midway.

Two optional rules are fighters and surface combat. Fighters are used either to protect your fleet or protect an airstrike from the enemiy's fighters. Their rules are simple, but unless you or the enemy send an unescorted attack at your carriers, they seem to have little effect on the game. Anti-aircraft does more damage to enemy airplanes than fighters and that is sad. Surface combat, the second optional rule, is rather poor. Both sides line up their fleets on the battle board, and take turns shelling each other. The Japanese, by going first and having more surface ships, including a wealth of battleships, nearly always win these encounters. The rules appear to mostly be a tack on, but if you use them I advise using the B-17 strike rule for the Americans in order to even things out.

Components (10 out of 10): Considering the age of this game, Midway has good components. They are sturdy. Legible, and not hideous. I like them, and so far they are best I've seen from the period.

Originality (5 out of 5): These Avalon Hill classics were charting new territory and setting new standards. For many that standard has been far surpassed, but anyone with a brain has to respect the first real wargames.

Historical Quality (2 out of 5): Midway does at least fulfill the accuracy of the situation and the forces involved, so you do get some understanding of the battle. That Midway Island is worth as much as sinking numerous warships is a great touch in keeping with the Japanese operational goals. Also the ship stats are simple, but generally accurate and you can perform special torpedo attacks. The historical quality ends here though. For one all the aircraft are equal, which is really an insult considering we had terrible torpedo planes, but excellent dive bombers. You will lose more planes to anti-aircraft fire than enemy fighters. Also surface combat is like some silly fantasy land, where forces move the same, there is no torpedo attacks, and you line up like a chess match. Still, Midway never tried to be hyper accurate. It is fun, and while not an out and out insult to history, it should be avoided by wargamers looking for a realistic experience. I suggest foregoing the surface combat rules, but if anyone knows of a substitute for them I'd like to hear it.

Overall (45 out of 50): Midway is a simple and fun wargame that can satisfy the itch for carrier combat without being too time consuming. Unlike Rising Sun; Command at Sea Volume 1, it is not a game that lets detail get in the way of play. However it doesn't exist in a total fantasy land, like War At Sea. Midway remains in a comfortable and respectable middle ground.

An Old Advertisement Says It All:

Thread: Re: House rules

I haven't played this game since the Marine Corps in 82.
I have been toying with the idea of combining Tactics II and Midway for a combined sea battle and land invasion. There is an abundance of ships on the Japanese side so I would make some of them troop transports.
The idea is to get them to Midway/ Tactics II map board. Maybe a total victory would be capturing the blue capital and holding it for a certain amount of turns. Just a thought.
I would like to know what you think?
Hi,

I think I'm understanding a rule wrong. It takes 11 turns for a ship from the edge of the board where it starts to get to midway. And then another 4 to capture it. That means that no matter how fast the invasion force goes, 5 points are guaranteed to the Americans. Is this right?

Thread: House rules

I recently received a private email from a fellow BGG'er who requested details on my house rules, as mentioned in the photos I uploaded that refer to the carrier cards and playing double blind. I responded privately but I also thought I'd post my response here in case anyone else is interested:

Our house rules are quite simple. We felt that it was quite unrealistic to have to tell the other player that you were readying your aircraft; not something the other side would have known. I made a half sheet of paper sized display for each of the carriers and bases in the game and the Coral Sea variant. As you can see in the photos on BGG, each carrier display has several boxes labeled "not ready", "readying", "ready", "Ops", and "Cap". All planes start in the "Not Ready box". In step two of the rules, instead of announcing "readying", simply move the aircraft in question secretly into the "readying" box. On step two of the following turn, move them secretly to the "ready" box. Once in the "ready" box, they may remain there until launched. On step five of that turn, record the the information on the operations portion of the hit record sheet as normal, but also move those aircraft to the "Ops" box. If using the optional fighter rules (and we always do), treat the fighters the same way, except that some of them (or all of them) may be moved to the "CAP" box to provide combat air patrol protection for the ship, per rule 4 under "Fighters". We find that these rules make the game more realistic while reducing the book keeping load at the same time.

For playing double blind, a third person is required who acts as a referee. Instead of calling out areas during the search procedure, the searched areas are written down on scraps of paper and given to the referee who writes down whether the search was successful or not and the types of ships present there if successful exactly per step 3 of the search procedure. The referee also reviews the two boards to determine if ships from opposing sides are in the same zone or not. Although this method takes longer and requires a third person it is as realistic as you can get with this game. I have acted as referee for my two sons on occasion and we've all had a great time. Although the referee doesn't get to play, he can still feel the excitement and gets to see all of the "near misses" that he can't tell the players about until the game is over, so it's fun for him too.

I still have my copy of Midway, with many pieces worn from numerous playings during my high school years. The Japanese cruiser Tone still has tooth marks in it made by a momentarily irate friend/opponent who had either not sunk it (if I were playing Japan), or had just had it sunk (if I were playing the US). I can't recall which now.

Double-blind play has its limitations, but I can still recall lots of tension searching for the other side. These days, I use a computerized double-blind system based on an Excel spreadsheet that captures the drama even better; since you don't even know where the other side is searching, and my not even spot an enemy search plane shadowing your fleet.

To stand in the shoes of a Nimitz, Spruance or Fletcher is a gaming experience I always savor. Their courage, and that of the air groups under their command was immense.

Yes, a fantastic game. I still remember stumbling across it in a store and actually having enough money saved up at the time to get it. I don't remember how much it was exactly, but I know I had just reached the hard to save up sum of five dollars accumulated from allowance, chores, and returning glass soda bottles collected from my bike trips through the neighborhoods and woods. My Mom had to chip in a few pennies for the tax.

I don't know if it was sentimentality or just the added complexity and change, but I never did like the remake that came out several years ago.

One nice additional feature is Rear Adm. C. Wade McClusky's personal account of the battle contained in the battle manual.

The game of Midway was the first I had heard of the battle. Reading the account by Admiral McClusky inspired me to devour as much as I could on Midway at the library and triggered an interest in the Pacific theater that has lasted to this day.

There was a similar anecdote by General Mcauliffe in the original AH Battle of the Bulge game covering Bastonge, I think.

The game uses a screen and separate search boards to provide limited intelligence, similar in some respects to Battleship.
Did you ever figure out the correct way to fold or use that search board and screen? I always had to prop the board up between things.

oh for sure! "Great MINDS 'think' alike!" as I had MY very 1st 'order' from those folks as well! I was also into that "World at War" T V series and the magazines, and info booklets of theirs, and I STILL have many for that. I wanted to refight" the "Battle of the River Plate", so I began with those ships, except for that they didn't HAVE the "Exeter"! So I had to have their "Cumberland" in place for it. Then later on, I got into 1:2400th 'scale' for mainly W.W.I, while I have the majority of 1:4800th 'scale' now for W.W.II, as those are plenty for what you spend. Either get the 1:3000th 'scale' and PAY more, or find those slightly smaller ones as being cheaper overall. There are even smaller ones in 1:6000th 'scale', but I like the bigger ones than those as the details become LOST in such tiny types for this. They are even packaged as "Battles" such as "Midway" for getting entire SETS of that with it. Those aren't too cheap either, no matter WHAT kinds that you do want.
"ahhh...Good times!"

Thread: Midway First and Still A Favorite

I can't be objective about Avalon Hill's naval wargame Midway from 1964. It was my first "real" wargame and launched me into the hobby that I've enjoyed these 38 years.
In late 1968 I saw an ad in Boy's Life magazine for an outfit called Alnavco, which sold miniature model warships (back then all in 1:1200 scale). Being a middle-school kid with no money I wasn't able to indulge in buying the beautiful ship models. I bought one, a model of the USS Olympia of Dewey fame, that sadly was destroyed through youthful carelessness.
In the Alnavco catalog they also listed some naval boardgames by a company called Avalon Hill. I think they offered U-Boat, Bismarck and Midway. The games were just $4.95 and you could fight an entire battle with a fleet of ships. As this was about the price os a single small model warship the boardgames sounded like a good deal for someone on a limited budget like me.
So I ordered a copy of Midway in March of 1969 (I still have the invoice) and a hobbyist was born. I persuaded my best friend to play and before long we had an active little gaming circle going. Besides Midway we played Stalingrad, Guadalcanal. Anzio, Afrika Korps, Waterloo, 1914. Jutland from Avalon Hill plus some of the early SPI games like Centurion and Battle of Moscow.
My best friend's older brother brought back Diplomacy from college and we also tried out nonwargames such as Football Strategy, Stock Market and Ploy.
Most wargamers have a soft spot for the game that first brought them into the hobby, even if it's not an especially good game. Fortunately Midway is better than most of its contemporaries and still holds up rather well despite the passage of 40 years. It's still possible to round up a game now and then. The situation is classic and the execution is entertaining. While newer games are more realistic, Midway is not a howler as far as historical accuracy goes and it has the virtues of playing pretty quickly and being well-balanced.
Most beginning players find it a little easier to play the Japanese, but between experienced players the game is an even match. The Japanese and U.S. fleets are very close in strength during the early going when the game will most often be decided.
The game uses a screen and separate search boards to provide limited intelligence, similar in some respects to Battleship. The U.S. has an advantage in searching power which makes up for its disadvantage in carriers.
Once fleets are located air strikes can be launched with fighters, dive bombers and torpedo planes. Simple and straightforward rules cover the air-to-air and air-to-ship combat while capturing some of the nuances of strike tactics such as "anvil" attacks.
While there are simple rules for resolving surface battles, they rarely occur as the U.S. fleet normally strives mightily to avoid any surface contact with the much larger Japanese fleet.
The game succeeds in capturing the essence of the "Incredible Victory" at Midway. It's certainly possible for the U.S. player to replicate the historical result, but it's equally possible for the Japanese to achieve their sought-for "decisive victory."
One nice additional feature is Rear Adm. C. Wade McClusky's personal account of the battle contained in the battle manual.
Other valuable add-ons include the Wargamer's Guide to Midway, a 36-page booklet published in 1979 that contains a digest of the best Midway-related articles from the Avalon Hill General.
Another great add-on is the Coral Sea variant that adds counters, rules and a map to cover the other 1942 carrier battles around the Solomons. With some slight rules modifications, players can use the Midway game system to refight the battles of Coral Sea, Eastern Solomons, Santa Cruz and Guadalcanal. The system works remarkably well for these battles. While not quite as detailed as some of the other carrier battle games depicting this campaign, the Coral Sea variant plays quickly without affronts to historical sensibility.
Overall, Midway is still one of my favorite games and a real "classic" in the best sense of the term.

For more reviews and other stuff check out my blog: http://pawnderings.blogspot.com

Other than the subject and the fact they both use double-blind search boards, these games have virtually nothing in common. As to which is better, that'll depend on your personal perferences. Midway 64 is perhaps a better "game", but takes liberties with OOB, movement and combat capabilities. The Smithsonian version is more historically accurate in most cases, but has a reputation for search being too easy. Both are worth having IMHO.

Different yes. I prefer the first, Midway '64 but it's really up to your taste. It's been some time since I played either but if I remember right the later had a larger time scale that I didn't care for in a naval game of this scale. With the first I liked the battle board where you get to place each air counter for your attack. You could always get both.

Hi John

Would you be good enough to send that rules pdf file to me; I'm in a similar situation. (I also want to develop the search rules, which the Midway situation lends itself to.)

MANY thanks Paul

Pat-

I'll be happy to scan the rules and send a PDF to you if you can't find them anywhere else. Just send me your email address.

Just to be sure, you need the 1964 version, correct?

John

Thread: Where can I find the rules?

I just bought a Midway on eBay but there weren't any rules. I knew that when I bought the game - but I thought it would be easy to find a scan of the rules on the net. Sadly it isn't.

Does anyone know where I can find the rules?
