Thread: Re: Which plane is the best?

For a mix of maneuver and firepower, "Top Fighters" are probably well named. The Snipe and Fokker D7 are both very powerful airplanes.

I have not used the Se5 and SS D3 in combat yet. Historically, neither should be quite as good as the two planes above.

As to overall survivability, while it lacks the Immelmann, a DH4 with A/A gun arrangements is a tough plane to beat. It is as fast as the Alb. D5 (and as fast or faster than the two planes in Top Fighters) and having an A gun in the tail means you will get lots of shots with it that you would not get with a single seater. The game makes no allowance for limited ammo in the Lewis drums or reduced effectiveness from a gunner's position, so you have just as good a shooter as the best in the game, with a very wide arc. And if someone does get in front front your plane, you can do a lot of damage that way also.

And yes, the damage points are a big factor. While there are special damage chits, there is no cumulative effect-- your plane is at full strength and full abilities, right up until it takes the last hit point of damage. So more hit points is always a good thing, but a few more hit points is not better than higher maneuverability.

Maneuvers impact your ability to line up a shot, as well as your ability to avoid being shot.

Actually, on the whole, the difference in hit points has always seemed a bit weak to me. Something like the SPAD (known as a 'flying brick") is not that much sturdier than a Fokker Dr1 (which was known to be a fragile plane).

The B damage deck is quite a bit weaker-- it has a lot more zero damage and lower points, and more cards as well, which dilutes the chances of getting big point damage or the explosion.

Thread: Which plane is the best?

I have recently gotten alot of the planes, and am wondering which is the best?

So if you were fighting just to eliminate your oponnent on an average size board, with competent players, which plane would you chose? For the single seaters.

Also, which manuver deck is the best? The decks from the Dogfight pack, N and O, seem really good because they have tight turns and wide turns. I notice the K deck doesn't have the turn around card, so I would think that would be the worse.

So is it all about hit points? Is that more important than the manuever deck? Thus a J-A-16 of A-A-16 will be better than an I-A-11?

I dont have the B damage deck, but it looks like that would be worse. Would you rather have a J-B-14 or an I-A-11?

Just curious what people who played alot thought.
It was a blast and I hope you run it again next year, or something like it!

It was MUCH better than the "official" FFG "tournament" that was later that night.

See you again next year!
I just unpacked about 8 to 10 planes I ordered a few weeks ago. They certainly look cool.

I am glad to know that they are planned to keep being produced. I suspect I will end up getting them all over time, but I should have enough for some fun now.

One set of wheels fell off when removed from the packaging. Anyone know what the policy is on that? I suppose they can be played without the wheels, but I am not a great model builder, so that was a bummer.

Brad

Beginning the turn after release, they go back to normal. This accounts for reduced speed and agility while lugging the bombs, and allows hostile fighters to be a bit more effective. It seems to work well.

Thanks for the report! I was in that game too and had a good time - lots of chaos and excitement.

Two seaters firing all A damage with no gunjams was a devastating combination -- it's not surprising that they fared so well. I think some planes had increased HP as well -- it made my SPAD XIII tactics near useless.

You did get a shot of me scoring a hit on a german though so my prowess has been documented and I survived til the end.

Good time!

Thread: Gencon 2008 Mega-game Recap: The Battle of St. Mihiel

Hi all,

We had a great game at Gencon in Indianapolis last week. Of the 30 players that participated, at least half already owned the game. This made the game much easier to run.

Each player chose an aircraft, with its maneuver deck, and a laminated damage record sheet. We lined each side up on either end a long table covered with three 4.5 ft x 9 ft playing mats. I made the battle mats with the help of my kids, $2 a yard fabric and cans of 99 cent black and walnut spray paint from the Wal Mart.

Many of the aircraft we used had been slightly changed to make them unique. The addition of stripes and wingtip and fuselage repaints made each plane clearly identifiable by its pilot. I made the cards in powerpoint, with the changed paint schemes and new names for the pilots. I can post these files if there is interest.

From other who have run large games, we used the advice to not use the critical hits in the damage deck, and to call out damage to everyone as it was dealt. The deck was created by Art DeFilippo, who made big 5x7 inch cards to show the damage. We also removed the instant kill effect, and replaced it with a 5 damage card. This ramped up the excitement, and everyone howled with delight when someone took a bad hit, and complained when a series of zero damage results were pulled. As the game went on, Art kept 'tweaking' the damage by removing the 0 damage cards to make the game more bloody, which everyone seemed to enjoy. We decided to use only the A deck, instead of using the B damage deck for some of the observers' guns.

We let the first two pilots shot down get a replacement aircraft. One was the 'Freddi Von Richthofen' aircraft, which represented Manfred's less successful (but equally stylish) second cousin. Like the first aircraft run by that player, it too plunged to its doom after a spirited fight.

Since we had a good number of two-seater aircraft, we set up a series of objectives for bombers and reconnaissance aircraft to target along the center of the table. As they passed directly over these targets, they were given one victory point. Killing other planes also earned a victory point. We did notice that the American two-seater aircraft were too fast for the swarm of angry German planes to catch. The tail guns really dealt a lot of damage to the German planes, making the Allied two-seaters the most powerful planes in the game.

To keep the game interesting, and to finish in the three hours allotted, we rolled up the mat on either side. The reason (because historical accuracy is PARAMOUNT :-) ) was that high command was directing signal flags on the ground to redirect all available planes to the central front (the middle of the board)

In the end, the overall winner was an Allied two-seater who already had been shot down. Before going down in flames, he had bombed two objectives and shot down three aircraft. Three other pilots had four victory points each. The winner won a Watch your Back boxed set that was provided by Fantasy Flight Games (thanks FFG!)

Honorable mention went to the last German player, who tried to fight off eight allied planes (unsuccessfully). He won the coveted Red Baron award (a boxed Richthofen WOW miniature), also provided by Fantasy Flight Games, who had a great set-up and booth at the con.

Pictures from the event can be found at the Wings of War Nexus Yahoo Group, located here:
http://games.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/wow_nexus/photos/brow...

Thank you everyone for the great advice on running the game. It was a blast, and we're hoping to run it again at Cold Wars in Gettysburg this Autumn.

Regards,
Steve Gibson and Art DeFilippo
Northern Virginia Gamers (NOVAG)
Thread: Re: What Are The Differences Between Series?

Essentially it's about plane types. THere are 3 liveries of each plane in each series. Each plane type has its own characteristics (amount of damage it can sustain, stability as a gun platform etc) and manoevers, but these are the same for every plane of that type (eg. Fokker DrI)

Series one was 3 Fokker triplanes, 3 Sopwith Camels, 3 Spad XIIIs and 3 Albatros DVs. For example Fokker Triplanes are painted in the authentic colour schemes of Richtofen, Rahn and Kempf. They are the same plane type, just 3 different colours. Series 1 was all scout/fighters, with variable manoeverability and strength. The different plane types have different characteristics and different manoevers available. It's a nice mix.

Series 2 is the same numbers, but Fokker VIIs, Sopwith Snipes, DH4s and Roland C1s. The first two are probably the most advanced fighters of WW1 and can outmanoever (notionally) the Series one planes. The latter 2 are 2 seaters, which makes for a more mission based game about bombing a target, photographing troop movements etc. Again, there are 3 colour schemes for each plane, althought all of the Snipes are pretty similar.

Hope this helps

Thread: Re: Which Minis are Needed to Start/Play Wings of War?

Agreed on all points.

I've been doing demo games with 5-11 players, about 12 separate sessions and probably 40+ total scenarios and on only a couple occasions have SPADS been shot down. It's not that they take a lot more damage-- if anything, the "number" that WoW gives them seems too low, relative the other airplanes. But their speed means they don't get SHOT at as much. And as we all know, not being shot at all is preferable to being able to take lots of hits!

On the other hand, they get to shoot fewer times too.

As a 1 on 1 game, Spad vs Albatross, usually ends up being a series of Immelmans and head-on shots, and it's frequently just who pulls better/worse cards.

But in a scrum, it's a fine plane to have, if you like still being on the board at the end of the scenario.

Thread: Re: Which Minis are Needed to Start/Play Wings of War?

Be aware that not all planes are balanced matchups 1v1. DR.I vs Camel is good as is Albatross vs SPAD. All other Allied planes have one or more maneuver advantages over the Albratross while the D.V has none on them, so the D.V needs a very good pilot to hold its own. SPADs turn like bricks but at least are fast and tough.

That said, when it becomes many-on-many, the individual characteristics of any plane become less important. The SPADs really start to shine in scrums.

Thanks Kevin. My problem is that I want to do #1, but the price tag is making that unlikely.

I like your second idea and that is kind of what I wanted to know. It sounds like getting Famous Aces and 1 of each Fokker and Sopwith would give me something that could validate if I really like it. Perhaps 2 of each for a few more players.

I will still be hit with the urge to buy them all, but that is probably not a good idea right now.

The reason I noted both was because I would like to factor in the possibility of getting the ones I don't have over time. No one can guarantee when "out of print" will happen, but having some idea would be helpful.

Thanks again!

Brad

No, Series 3 is not here yet.

In both Series 1 and Series 2, there was an initial delivery that was below pre-sales. FFG doled out the stock they had on a proportional level so that the pre-ordered distributors got SOME, but not all that they wanted.

We have seen a 2nd shipment of Series 1 already (that is what is dwindling now) and the 2nd shipment of Series 2 is due, literally, "any day now." (Okay, maybe any week now.)

There was a schedule given around last February, but those of us who came on board early and have seen several of these realized it was an optimistic schedule. We might have Series 3 and/or the bomber planes card version and/or the balloon busters by Christmas, but don't count on all three of them.

What has NOT been announced is if there are plans for a 3rd shipment of Series 1. I would suggest you work to nail your copies of those soon. They might, indeed, be increasingly hard to find.

In shopping around for WoW minis, I was only able to find 4 Series I planes, 2 for each side of the conflict. The Series II planes were so heavily worked over I would have had 2 for 1 side, 1 for the other.
Thread: Re: Which Minis are Needed to Start/Play Wings of War?

Well, you've set up two very different things.

1. "What minis do I need TO PLAY?"

2. "I'm a completist." and later "too much a collector."

If you want to collect, quit worrying about it and buy one of everything you can get your hands on.

If you just want to play, consider the circumstances you'll usually play with. If it's just going to be two of you, I'd recommend getting the (in Blue Max terms) "Dancers." Get a Sopwith Camel and a Fokker Triplane. Their tight turns make it more likely that a one-on-one game can actually involve shooting at each other with something other than head-on passes.

The SPAD is fast and turns slow. The Albatross is in between the Spad and the Dancers. With a game of 4 or more players, they are nice planes to factor into the mix. (Especially at 6-8 planes).

And yes, there are some series 2 minies around if you'll look. The Snipe is very much a dancer-- a dancer with some extra speed. The Fokker D7 is something special-- not simply a dancer and certainly not just a speed plane. They make an interesting addition.

Add some 2 seaters and life gets even more interesting.

For box games, I agree with getting Famous Aces first. Recon patrol next.

Well, you COULD buy one of each. That would give you about three of each different model plane (3 Fokker DR1,3 Sopwith Camels, etc.) but this would end up costing a pretty good chunk of change.

I have found that I prefer different models, so just getting a couple different planes, playing with them, then getting copies of the ones you like would probably give you a much richer experience without breaking your wallet.

'Course it will still be expensive.

I'd recommend Famous Aces as your base set, and two pairs of matching planes, one pair from the German Side, one pair from the British. If you're only playing two players the matched sets are less important. If you're playing four players it makes sense to have two sets of wingmen flying against each other.

That said, get the ones you think look the nicest and start flying -- each comes with its own maneuver cards so one base set is all you need.

             Sag.

It's a very clever carrier and I'm impressed what a snug fit it provides.

Just got the deluxe set. If you look carefully there are "bumps" in the plastic carrier to hold the wings, press them in with a finger or other suitable instrument and then press the planes out from below as the the above advice suggestes.
The only "pilot" difference I recall with WWI concerns things like the red/green jam symbols. Some pilots can be rated as "more careful" with their ammo (think about the picture of E. Rickenbacker checking every bullet before it went into his belts. He kept a bucket for the rejects, which he liked to point out to guys who said, "they're made in a factory and all the same.")

This is a handy (and easy) add-in if you have a scenario or situation in need of a tweak for balance.

I think there was talk about doing something with real "ace" pilots making the Immelmann easier, but that was definitely optional.
Aircraft movement in the rules is based strictly upon the plane. Your skills playing the cards represent the pilot.

There are advanced rules in Dawn of WWII that allow you to modify how you use your deck (lifts restrictions) based upon the pilot, but I don't think that's available in the WWI titles.

             Sag.

Thread: Double Seaters and the Deluxe Set

I am thinking of getting some double seater planes. Does anyone know:
1) Do I need a copy of Watch your Back?
2) Will they work with the deluxe set (single seaters) - mix and match?

Thanks
Tony.
