Game works grate for 2. I can even say that the less players, the more control you have over the game. One of my mates sad that 1vs1 duel feels almost like a game of chess for him :)

MerricB wrote:

Rich went for the missionary strategy, which - unfortunately - was probably the worst you could pick. Sure, he got lots of colonists into the new world, but Josh just shot them down. He scored fairly well there nonetheless, but didn't have many points elsewise.

Come on, be fair...the missionary strategy would've been more effective if I'd switched my colonising efforts to areas where Josh didn't dominate so much with his soldiers and warfare. This strategy can work if there aren't people like Josh using the soldier the strategy to its utmost potential. I did a great deal better than you make out...I only finished 20 points behind you, but yet again, what does it matter ? :ninja:

Thread: Re: AoE III wins Origins Award for Best Historical Boardgame of the Year

The publisher is FRED. We'll be working with Paul Niemeyer as the Artist.

Game design and testing have been going on for a year and a half already. We're on the fourth or fifth iteration and quite close to final. I tried several quite different subgames around technologies and wonders and ended up scrapping them as broken and not fun (or adding too much play time). The end result is quite good and feels very tight, balanced, and competitive, with several paths to victory (military, trade, population expansion, technology, wonders)...usually combinations of these.

We will be starting blind testing and artwork in a month or two and are looking at an early 2009 publish date I should think.

The game utilizes many of the same gameplay mechanics as AoE III, with some key changes to fit the theme. More details to come with a press release from FRED/ Eagle Games.

Cheers,

GREAT 2p game. we play it all the time that way.

I strongly disagree though about removing the Inca Gold tile for 2p. We've played dozens of 2p games with this tile included, and purposely watched to see any pattern of the person who got it winning every time. Results were definitely inconclusive, and we found that the person who bought this tile did NOT win all the time, in fact only about 50% of the time. Try it out and see what you think.

Thread: Soldiers of the New World

This game, played last weekend between four players - Josh, Randy, Rich and me - proved to be an extremely entertaining one, showing once again why AoE3 deserves the "9" rating I've given it. (10? I have no game I give a 10 too... I like too many games!)

In this game, Josh showed us how effective a soldier strategy was, flooding the new world with his troops and shooting any of our colonists who dared encroach on his dominance there. It was only in the late game that Randy managed to get a few soldiers over there to protect his own men.

Rich went for the missionary strategy, which - unfortunately - was probably the worst you could pick. Sure, he got lots of colonists into the new world, but Josh just shot them down. He scored fairly well there nonetheless, but didn't have many points elsewise.

Randy began the game by stopping me using the Merchant strategy. And he got some merchant ships as well. However, he then diversified into other areas. If I could really describe Randy's strategy, it would be this: "He went first". Initiative was very important to Randy, and he gained a lot of improvements, including most of the money ones towards the end of the game.

For myself, I began by gaining the $20 from "Conquest", and then moved into a general "get as many Capital Buildings as possible" and otherwise have more men than anyone else. I also had Navigator, and so was the main discover of the game. I had 9 Capital buildings and 5 Discoveries at the end of the game... but, alas, the only Stage 3 improvement that wasn't drawn was Prosperity!

Scoring:

Age I: Josh 8, Rich 6, Merric 0, Randy 0
Age II: Josh 20, Rich 16, Merric 12, Randy 8
Age III: Josh 46, Rich 30, Randy 24, Merric 14
Economy: Randy 16, Merric 16, Rich 10, Josh 4
Discoveries: Merric 29, Rich 16, Randy 8, Josh 0
Capital Buildings: Randy 32 (Factory, Taxation, Population, Wealth), Josh 27 (University, Power), Merric 25 (Navy, Mercantilism), Rich 8 (Glory)

Final Scores: Merric 84, Randy 80, Josh 77, Rich 64.

A very, very close game. I was very surprised to be the winner, but the Discovery route had given me the game!
