I looked at both of them, but they only listed the contents and not the details of each card (or a full description of each card). I am looking for the details on each card or better yet a scan of the cards front and back.

Thanks though.

Thread: Session Report: Solo Game with 5 Adventurers

As another reviewer remarked, this game is about the story, not the actual game playing mechanics. Here is my story of a reckless solo game one afternoon while watching that old Dungeons & Dragons cartoon rented from Netflix. Ahhh, the layered nostalgia (this game was my first introduction to fantasy gaming, I recently picked up a copy on eBay).

Here's a photo taken at the point where the tides turned in favor of our less savory companion, Krind The Thief.

The first sign that this dungeon would be trouble was when Keenya, our first Paladin, died on his 3rd turn. He was slumming on Level 2, looking to pick up a cheap sword, when he missed some small pest and was killed instantly by a snake-eyes roll.

Devon the Warrior made his way more successfully down into levels 2 and 3. At that point Krind made his first move, trying to steal a gold ring from Devon. The attempt failed, and after his time-out punishment, Krind decided to follow Kador the Dwarf.

Kador, after spending several turns staring at a secret door, had finally managed to pick up a sword in level 1. The Dwarf fought his way up through level 2 into the upper half of level 3 with the Thief in tow. Krind, even though he is faster than the short-legged dwarf, could not keep up with his kills. Kador was on the brink of winning the game when he met the Werewolf who killed him in the northwest corner of the dungeon.

This is the point when I paused to take the photo above.

Also in the photo you can see the Wizard Rast's misadventures down in level 5, spending as much time cleaning up the Magical Tome chambers where he replenishes his spells, as actually killing anything. And then there's our reincarnated Paladin, wounded, but absolutely butchering the denizens of level 4. He would later go on to die again in the southeast corner of the board, not bothering to heal himself as he raced Krind for the win.

And finally you can see Devon the Warrior, who had finished in level 3, and used the level 4 teleportation chamber to move to the top of the board. Devon is wounded by a Green Slime, will soon be tragically killed on the way home by a Displacer Beast in the Queen's Private Chamber.

Back to our main story. Krind, still one turn behind the Dwarf, stepped over his still-warm body and slew the Werewolf.

You've already guessed who walked right over to pick up Devon's treasure. Krind sauntered down from level 3 and killed the Displayer Beast using the dead dwarf's sword.

Our second Paladin promptly killed himself with a level 5 monster, and we now had 3 reincarnated heroes rushing up from the Main Gallery to ambush Krind, the Dwarf, Warrior, and Paladin.

Krind had so much excess loot at this point that even when the Dwarf stole back a gold ring, he still had enough to win.

I'm not sure if anybody bothered to tell Rast that the game was over. We wish him better luck next time, and if a more efficient strategy doesn't help, will consider some of the variants mentioned here.

Thread: Re: White numbers for Wizard

I think the reason why the green numbers are low on some of the level 5 and 6 monsters is because of the wizards spells. If you look at those cards the green number is always lower than if the wizard would have used either a fireball or lightning bolt spell. This is to make it that the wizard cannot automatically just use a spell and his odds will be better.Remember the wizard must decide before looking at the monster if he is going to use a spell or not.So it just wastes one of the wizards spell cards if he gets one of those cards with a low green number and uses a spell. The thing that is really more unfair about the green numbers is that the thief fights on green numbers also so I have seen people take the theif down into level 5-6 looking for an easy kill.

Thread: White numbers for Wizard

My idea of a wizard is the stereotypical, physically frail, offensive spell caster. I don't imagine a wizard being a better fighter than any of the melee classes. Especially against level 5 and 6 creatures, where green numbers are sometimes better than red. So I like to have the wizard attack on white. It is a little odd having white numbers better than green on the low level creatures. However, since I like to have the Wizard hunt big game, the amount of low level poaching doesn't change.

Thread: the player cards
I'm brand new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated. I was cleaning out my parents cellar and found my copy of "new dungeon" (1989) and wanted to play in a fit of nostalgia. I just found out that im missing the player cards. I found a list of these missing cards on a thread:

18 Heros
1 Princilla
1 Keenya
1 Nook
1 Krind
1 Thugg
1 Flind
1 Abrana
1 Rast
1 Kasira
1 Longbranch
1 Flennentar
1 Kador
1 Thosia
1 Devon
1 Madelyne
1 Floid
1 Zinda
1 Alonzo

Does anyone know if theres anywhere i can find copies of these cards (front and back) that I could copy off the internet or something? I'd really appreciate and info anyone can send me. thanks.

Keny
My copy of New Dungeon is almost complete save for two player miniatures - the wizard, and the dwarf.

Also interested in the New Dungeon Supplement if it can be had for a reasonable price.

Thanks,
Mark

Thread: Re: Different version?

I don't believe I have played any of those other versions. My box is certainly the same as the one in this game entry: stone walls, skeleton, red dragon, scroll. The cards are slightly different from what people have listed in other forums though, so I was wondering if there were different cardsets published in the same box. Maybe TSR cheated me out of a few heroes and treasures 18 years ago
Thread: Re: Different version?

That's the version that I own. There was a "Dungeon" boardgame by TSR that came out about five or ten years earlier, and the one you have is a newer version of that game. So maybe the first version had the items you remember? By the way, the first version had great art from some of D&D's best artists. The "New Dungeon" doesn't compare graphically.

Thread: Different version?

Hi there,
I'm currently sorting through a bunch of games from my childhood since my parents are moving. I came across my copy of this game, so I hopped onto BGG to see what was up. My list of cards is somewhat different from the definitive one on here! I don't know if I have a different version of the game or what the deal is...I think I got the game new, although I'm not sure. I remember as a kid thinking it was weird that the rulebook mentioned a crystal ball and a +2 sword, but I saw no such treasure in my game. I was usually pretty good about not losing parts to games, and there are an even number of each card type, so I don't believe I've lost any. Since I was considering selling/trading this game, I didn't want to claim it was complete if it isn't for some reason! Does anyone else have this card distribution? Thanks! -Bryce
‬
Here is my inventory list:
1‭ ‬Rulebook‭
‬1‭ ‬Game Board‭
‬2‭
Nice review.

This game has been a favorite of mine since I was in 6th grade, when I received it as a gift. I played it again about a year ago, and it's rekindled my interest in gaming.

You may want to pick up a few of the dnd miniatures to use as characters. They're nice looking, and cheap.
The 'monsters only sometimes appear in chambers' rule would be:
if you enter a level 2 chamber, they always appear
if you enter a level 3 chamber, roll 1d6. Chamber is empty if you roll a 1
if you enter a level 4 chamber, roll 1d6. Chamber empty on 1 or 2
level 5 chamber, empty on a 1,2 or 3
level 6 chamber, empty on 1,2,3,4

Might seem odd to make the tougher chambers safer, but then I figure there are a lot more rats and snakes than there are dragons and beholders. Plus, I wanted a speed bump at the easier levels. The harder chambers are easier to get through, but there's still that 'what if i run into a behemoth that can never be hit?' factor, so it works pretty well! This also results in , 'You wanna ambush me? Your wounded char will have to come through here first!'

My question about your magic shield was about rolling 2's and 3's. If monsters get +1, and you roll a 2, does the character die? Or is it treated as a 3?

Good to hear from you

The magic shield would not make characters immune to death. It simply make it more unlkely that the character will "lose" a battle round and become wounded and then dead (if he/she is already wounded).

- I'm interested in your "monsters only appear sometimes" variant. How do you work that?

Neat! I'll combine your treasure room idea with my "monsters only appear sometimes" in a chamber.

Question: Does your magic shield make characters immune to death? Or is there a cutoff-point? If I used it, I would apply the bonus to rolls of 4 or higher.

Thread: Fun, could use tweaking

I'm one of those who had the 'recaptured youth' experience.

Recently picked this one up from Ebay in complete and very good condition. Played it with a couple friends, and we had a great time! The dice rolls got to be annoying as the game is mostly luck, but there was a little strategy in terms of where to go first, where to get the best stuff fastest before your opponents can poach your 'turf', whether to try sniping your opponent or staying away...quite a few mini-strategies to keep things interesting. Certainly not chessic strategies though.

The group fight mechanics are a bit tough to work on, and we tend to be selfish and cannibalistic so we skipped the group experience.

The figures are definitely nicer than pawns. I'm even thinking of ordering some miniatures just for fun.

After playing a couple games for discovery, it occurred to us that maybe some rules could be adjusted. This was after realizing a warrior could waltz thru level 1-3 and win before anyone else got very far. The really odd part is that the warrior got the +1 sword as his first prize EVERY game for 4 games straight!! Very bizarre. And the wizard is powerful, but hard to get to the high level areas without spending a few turns going through the chambers.

So, we tried the following mods:
1. Monsters don't always appear in chambers. The odds decrease as the chambers get deeper. This allows the easy chambers to act as speed bumps, and the harder levels become a little more open and fun to sneak through. Ex: Always encounter a critter in level 2, but need to roll 5 or 6 on 1d6 to find a critter in level 6 chambers. Now the deeper areas are a little more open.

2. Thieves can 'backstab' using warrior values on his first attack, but then uses the normal green numbers on subsequent hits. Magic weapons only improve the green values. Now thieves work better alone, fight a little better than a wizard (go figure), but not quite as good as a warrior, especially a warrior with magic weapons.

Next, I'm adding some treasures I made out of business cards just for fun. They obviously won't look good, but it's just testing right now.

Will probably be +1 and +2 weapons for elf/dwarf only, or thief-only, maybe an extra +2 'generic' weapon, and can be found in levels 3 and 4. Remove the highest-value treasures to accomodate the new weapons. Again this encourages deeper exploration since now there are fewer valuable treasures in the easier zones.

-----------

So, in summary, fun game! Definitely better rules than the original. Fun in its simplicity, yet there are some advanced features for a group of adults who want to relax and not sweat their brains out. The above tweaks I suggested make the game a little more playable. I wonder if there is a similar game with just a little more depth...

What adjustments have you made?

Sounds pretty cool. I've always enjoyed charging over to level five and hoping to get a lucky roll or two for the win. But for a more strategic play, your idea has merit. The stats you researched are pretty depressing.

Thread: Leveling Varient

While playing Dungeon multiple times over the last few weeks (only because the son loves it), a very painful trend reared it's head. Nearly half the game board and cards are never used. Even if each player was a melee type (warrior/paladin), it is extremely risky to move past the level three spaces.

Mathematically, since most green cards are 8 or 9 to defeat for melee, your win ratios are either 15-21 or even worse at 10-26. That doesn't even begin to look at the odds crushing horrors of the level five and six cards. At level three, though, you will almost always have a better than coin flip chance of success - 21-15. The treasure amounts don't justify the risk, not to mention the presence of traps at level four.

One may claim the magic sword helps alleviate this, but there is only one in the low levels and it is random to whether you can claim it or not (or if it shows up at all).

So, we started adding a few levels to our play. The experience points we earn are based off of the level of monster defeated. So, if you defeat a level one monster, you get one experience point. If you defeat a level two, you get two. Etc.

* At five experience, you become level two and add one to your rolls.
* At fifteen experience, you become level three and add two to you rolls.
* At thirty-five, you gain the final level and now add a total of three to your rolls.

We are still tweaking whether we want 35 pts to be the mark for the last level or possibly reduce/increase it.

With the addition of levels, it is much easier to move around the game board as the designers probably initially imagined- from level to progressive level.

We have also removed the crystal balls from the treasure mix. The card doesn't have much weight and is a real let down when drawn.

Thread: The New Dungeon and my 4 1/2 year old

I remember when I was a wee lad, there was a game my friend own called Dungeon. We maybe played it just one time, but I was so mesmerized by all of the different treasure cards and monsters included, I never forgot it. After searching for new games for me and my son to play, I managed to track one down on Ebay. This wasn't the old version I had played with before, but it appears that it might be better.

Other than the distinct smell of 'old', the glut of cards and colorful board got oohs and ahhs from both my son and I. The set-up took only a few minutes and may have been extended as I tried to teach the words "monster" versus "treasure". Following the suggestion from the beginner rule variant in the book, we both played as fighters as to not complicate the issue.

My son had no problems grasping the concept of movement and understanding which sides of the rooms were doors. It did take a little prodding on my part, though, to ensure he was moving towards corridors with many room options instead of dead ends. This little aid did not hinder the fun.

As we entered the rooms and flipped up monster cards, I ensured that he not only counted his dice and compared (greater than/less than) his number to the monster at hand, but that he also picked the combat totals from the right colors. This activity alone has some educational merit, plus allows him to jump up at the end and exclaim how he "got that monster".

Treasures ended up being more abstract for his age group, though. While he understood what a 'bag of gold' was or a 'silver cup', the values that ran from 250-6000 didn't quite compute. He did want to know the value and he did get great enjoyment for uncovering new treasure, but I had to assist him adding up to the total of treasure he needed to win.

He did manage to win the first game and came in a close round in our second immediate match. While this is still an extremely luck based game, I do enjoy the theme of The New Dungeon compared to many other games in his age range. This will be a reoccurring game in our stable.
other than that my inventory matches your list exactly (except for the known 3 cards I am missing)

so if you can confirm that a stone golem was counted as a stone giant then the list should look like this...

The New Dungeon Inventory List

1 Rulebook
1 Game Board
2 6 sided dice

6 Plastic Miniatures
1 Warrior
1 Elf
1 Dwarf
1 Wizard
1 Paladin
1 Thief

250 Cards

18 Hero cards:
1 Princilla
1 Keenya
1 Nook
1 Krind
1 Thugg
1 Flind
1 Abrana
1 Rast
1 Kasira
1 Longbranch
1 Flennentar
1 Kador
1 Thosia
1 Devon
1 Madelyne
1 Floid
1 Zinda
1 Alonzo

36 Spell cards:
12 Lightning Bolts
12 Teleport
12 12 Fireball

9 Level One Treasure cards:
2 sacks gold 250 GP
2 sacks gold 500 GP
2 sacks gold 750 GP
1 sacks gold 1000 GP
1 secret door card
1 magic sword "Goblinblade"
well so far I do see one difference-
on level five monster cards you have listed 3 Stone giants.

I have 2 Stone Giants and 1 Stone Golem. Maybe you accidentally counted the stone golem as a Stone Giant?

WOW- Good Job! thanks guys. looks like we finally have a good inventory list. Maybe we should replace the one on the BGG page with this one, since this one is much better!

Thread: The Ultimate New Dungeon Game Invemtory listing??

I recently bought a copy of the game and its cards did not match the site inventory list. After some back and forth with two other members in a different thread who had different card counts as well, I think I have put together the correct card listing for the game. Can someone confirm this?

1 Rulebook
1 Game Board
2 6 sided dice

6 Plastic Miniatures
1 Warrior
1 Elf
1 Dwarf
1 Wizard
1 Paladin
1 Thief

250 Cards

18 Heros
1 Princilla
1 Keenya
1 Nook
1 Krind
1 Thugg
1 Flind
1 Abrana
1 Rast
1 Kasira
1 Longbranch
1 Flennentar
1 Kador
1 Thosia
1 Devon
1 Madelyne
1 Floid
1 Zinda
1 Alonzo

36 36 Spell
12 Lightning Bolts
12 Teleport
12 12 Fireball

9 Level One Treasure
2 sacks gold 250 GP
2 sacks gold 500 GP
2 sacks gold 750 GP
1 sacks gold 1000 GP
1 secret door card
1 magic sword "Goblinblade" +1

9 9 level two treasure:
2 2 Sack of Gold 1,000 GP
1 1 Sack of Gold 750 GP
1 1 Sack of Gold 500 GP
2 2 Silver Cup 1,000 GP
1 1 Silver Ring 2,000 GP
1 1 Magic Sword "Orcslayer"
1 1 Secret Door Card

16 Level Three treasure:
2 Sack of Gold 1,000 GP
1 Sack of Gold 750 GP
3 Silver Cup 1,000 GP
3 Silver Ring 2,000 GP
2 Gold Ring 3,000 GP
3 Gold Cup 2,500 GP
1 Secret Door Card
1 ESP Medallion

18 Level Four Treasure
1 Sack of Gold 1,000 GP
1 Secret Door Card
1 Magic Sword "Dragonbane" +1
1 Magic Sword "the Weresword" +1
2 Gold Cup 2,500 GP
1 Huge Emerald
2 Sliver Ring
1 Huge Sapphire
1 Silver Cup
2 Gold Ring
1 Crystal Ball
2 Jade Idol
2 Silver Coffer

16 Level Five Treasure
2 Silver Coffer
2 Huge Emerald
2 Huge Sapphire
2 Gold Cup
1 Silver Ring
1 Silver Necklace
2 Jade Idol
2 Gold Ring
1 ESP Medallion
1 Huge Ruby

12 Level Six Treasure
2 Jade Idol
2 Huge Emerald
1 Silver Necklace
1 Gold Necklace
1 Silver Coffer
1 Magic Sword "Hillcleaver" =2
1 Huge Sapphire
1 Huge Diamond
1 Crystal Ball
1 Huge Ruby

9 Level One Monsters
2 Skeletons
1 Hobgoblins
1 Kobolds
1 Giant Lizard
2 Goblins
1 Giant Rats
1 Zombies

15 Level Two Monsters
2 Ghouls
2 Hobgoblins
2 Orcs
1 Lizard Man
1 Water Weird
1 Giant Spider
1 Giant Lizard
1 Wererat
1 Troglodytes
1 Orkash the Dark Elf
1 Karth Evil Warrior of Zhentil Keep
1 Level Two Cage

22 Level Three Monsters
3 Ogre
2 Mummy
1 Orcs
2 Gargoyle
1 Weretiger
2 Giant Spider
2 Giant Snake
2 Werewolf
1 Wight
1 Owlbear
1 Ochre Jelly
1 Ebon Thunderhorse, Wild Barbarian
1 Wizardhunter Evil Warrior
1 Level Three Cage!
1 Level Three Slide!

24 Level Four Monsters
1 Phase Spider
1 Plitz Gnomebasher
1 White Dragon
1 Chimera
2 Werewolf
1 Ettin
2 Troll
1 Wyvern
3 Mummy
1 Level 4 Cage
2 Green Slime
1 Zond the Bandit King
1 Level 4 Slide
2 Hill Giant
1 Displacer Beast
2 Giant Snake
1 Wraith

28 Level Five Monsters
3 Troll
3 Stone Giant
2 Hill Giant
3 Black Pudding
2 Green Dragon
2 Vampire
2 Green Slime
1 Black Dragon
2 Umber Hulk
3 Purple Worm
2 Mind Flayer
1 Frost Giant
1 Ghost
1 Slide

18 Level Six Monsters
1 Fire Giant
1 Magenta of Thay, Evil Wizrdess
2 Blue Dragon
2 Purple Worm
1 Dragonlich
2 Lich
2 Vampire
2 Beholder
1 Black Pudding
1 Cassana of Westgate Evil Wizardess
1 Ebon Doom
2 Red Dragon

6 Blank cards

Thanks in advance.

Thread: Re: Help!

Van Overbay: I have compared what you posted and what Bill posted. Between the postings and my list here is what I figured out. Bill and I both agree on the two cards you have as extra. Between your post and Bill's I have identified my extras as 3 lightning bolt cards, two lvl 4 werewolfs, one lvl 3 Weretiger and 1 lvl 3 Giant Spider (and one blank, lol). That would put both of our "non-extra" counts at 250. Based on the above I am posting what I think is the definative inventory list (what the heck I figured I would include everything along with what I think the 250 card break-out is).

1	Rulebook
1	Game Board
2	6 sided dice

6	Plastic Miniatures
1	Warrior
1	Elf
1	Dwarf
1	Wizard
1	Paladin
1	Thief

250	Cards

18	Heros
1	Princilla
1	Keenya
1	Nook
1	Krind
1	Thugg
1	Flind
1	Abrana
1	Rast
1	Kasira
1	Longbranch
1	Flennentar
1	Kador
1	Thosia
1	Devon
1	Madelyne
1	Floid
1	Zinda
1	Alonzo

36	36 Spell
12	Lightning Bolts
12	Teleport
12	12 Fireball

9	Level One Treasure
2	sacks gold 250 GP
2	sacks gold 500 GP
2	sacks gold 750 GP
1	sacks gold 1000 GP
1	secret door card
1	magic sword "Goblinblade"
My game has the following:

24 level four monsters. The one I see that you are missing is Plitz Gnomebasher.

18 level six monsters. Where it differs from your list is that I have 2 Red Dragons and 1 Dracolich.

I would say the best way to get them would be to place a Want Parts In Trade notice here on the New Dungeon page or try to purchase an incomplete game for a low price on ebay, making sure it included the cards you're missing.

-Van
