One thing I should say. I quit boardgaming on or around 1984. I bought a few games right after that, old habits die hard, but the only title, or one of the very very few I bought from 1984 to 2007 was Blackbeard.

While everyone will have their own opinion of the new version vs the old I think it should be pointed out that the old version (which is a game I greatly enjoyed) has a 6.4 rating here on BGG while the new version has a 7.2. So the new version so far seems to be getting good ratings from players.

Thread: Long Live AH Blackbeard!

Early comments on GMT Blackbeard seem to suggest it is not the old game improved, but a "Fiddler's Green" parallel universe where going a'pirating has become far too easy (ports and warships a pushover)and the game lacking in suspense. I have played 3 games of AH Blackbeard in the last week and enjoyed them all. I have the new one but am holding fire on that until the dust begins to settle. Meanwhile don't sell off your AH game - you may live to regret it. Conversely, it seems a buyers market at the moment for the oldie as those "converting" sell it off - get one now at a steal...

Thread: Re: Captain Jack Sparrow as Blackbeard Pirate.

I play a variant rule that your stashed net worth is a form of Investment that can gain or lose value each time there is a random event.
Roll 2D6. Compare result to Pirate's Cunning + Port Value (where stash is). If roll is equal to or less than this then your stash gains 10%. If roll is 3 or more higher than this then your stash loses 10%.
If playing with this rule then Jack Sparrow's Cunning is 6 for re-rolls but only 1 for Investment purposes (it just slips through his fingers...).

Thread: Re: Sunk by my own allies! Arrrh!

I got the newbie version, but like you it only spurred me to play the oldie. Had 3 games this week using my variant rules (money stashed in Safe Havens can gain or lose value according to the value of the port and the Cunning of the investor each random event - roll 2D6 against Port Value + Cunning - equal or less gain 10%, 3 or more over lose 10%; on first reaching 25, 50 and 75 Notoriety you can increase one Rating by one - but not the same one twice; most Notorious pirate in each of the three Ocean areas gains 1 Notoriety each random event). Sadly none of us drew my new "Jack Sparrow" character in any of the three games (see my posted file) - by the way if playing my variant rules above his Cunning is 6 for re-rolls but only 1 for Investment of stashed money). Loved all 3 games, and watching the discussion on the newbie version, I am thinking they threw the baby out with the bathwater.

Berg has just made it official, that you can continue to loot etc if you choose to fight the warship and not try to flee.

This is a major change and will allow you to 'do more'.

As for your 'damaged' ship with notoriety. I guess he listened to the rumours that the King's Commisioner was after him, so he decided to lay low on some uncharted island.

see here:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/315443

Living Rules will be updated week of June 2. It made a big difference in understanding the game.

(I've volunteered to scan them for BGG, but the mods turned it down due to copyright issues)

Thread: The Sad Tale of "Black" Jack Blood

I recently acquired Blackbeard in the Great Australian Maths Trade, with the intention of playing it solitaire. I set it up last night but was too tired to tackle the opaque rules, so I got into it first thing this morning. I must say, Berg has done a spectacular job with this game - it's the only solitaire game I've played where I was bored by the down time. What a talent the man has!

But seriously, the way you tell whose turn it is is to draw a card, look at the 3 player line, and it will tell you Player 1, Player 2, or Player 3. I was Player 3. I had one turn near the start of the game where I sailed over to near a merchant ship. Players 1 and 2 then had lots of turns during which Emmanuel Wynne had an entire career (rising to 11 Notoriety) and was killed by a warship off the Gold Coast. The merchant ship I was chasing sailed back to England, down the west coast of Africa, circumnavigated the globe, discovered the Northwest Passage, and was finally placed in a museum, all before I got a second turn.

Wynne was replaced by the effeminate Oliver La Buze. About this time I got a few turns, and La Buze and Blood chased pirates in the Caribbean while Christopher Condent grabbed two prizes off the coast of Madagascar, and returned the booty to port much to the joy of his scurvy-ridden crew. I discovered a fat prize off Jamaica, but couldn't capture it, and return to port for repairs. La Buze suffered a similar fate with the same ship. While I waited in port, La Buze repaired his ship, returned to attack the merchant again, and let it escape. La Buze headed north to search for more prizes, while I headed south towards the South American coast.

Sadly, all I found there was a storm which caused damage to my hull, leaving my speed at -1. I limped into Curacao to repair the damage. While I was there, a warship appeared off the coast, and for some reason decided to attack me. An unidentified warship can move d6 movement points, and it needed a 6. So it rolled one. The warship attacked my immobile sloop, and "Black" Jack Blood was killed.

So let's look back at the wicked career of the man known as "Black" Jack... he attacked a ship once. He claimed no prize. He took nothing. He got caught in a storm. That was the highlight of his career, really. Then he died. "Black" Jack gained no loot and no notoriety.

If you want to have an exciting pirate adventure too, you should get this game.

Thread: Sunk by my own allies! Arrrh!

With all the talk about the new Blackbeard, I decided to dust off the old version and try another solitaire game.

The board setup had 3 Merchants in the Indian Ocean and 3 in the Caribbean. Having concentrated in the Caribbean in my prior plays I decided to try starting in the Indian Ocean. By weighted die roll both my opponents felt the Caribbean was better hunting grounds.

I did not get off to a good start, being beaten off by the first merchant I faced. I raced back into port to repair, then got beaten off by a second merchant. I felt I needed to do something as Dummy 2 was already out to 20+ points in Notoriety, so I attacked again and successfully took the Dutch ship. I found a passenger of note on-board and tortured him for information on the defenses of Bombay. He managed to hold up to my torture, and I ransomed him for 600 pounds, a good early haul. I set sail for Bombay, taking another merchant en route that allowed me to upgrade to a Brig.

Meanwhile my opponents were sailing around the Caribbean, and sending trouble after me in the form of King's Commissioners. I felt that I could handle them though, and went straight for Bombay, succesfully attacking the town for 800 pounds of treasure, and then sacking it to make it unusable to anyone else.

At this point Dummy 2 and Dummy 3 ended up in New Providence on D&R, which forced them to duel. Dummy 2 ran Dummy 3 through and left port, only to be sunk shortly there after. The next pirate did not last long, and soon Dummy 2 was on his last legs having lost two pirates. That didn't stop them from coming after me with Warships and KC's, and suddenly the Indian Ocean looked much smaller.

I decided that 3 KC's and 2 Warships were too much to handle in one small ocean and it was time to try my luck elsewhere. They had other ideas though, and chased me from port to port as I tried to get my ship repaired. Finally I made it into Madagascar, and while I was blockaded I was able to get repaired to run the blockade. I made my escape to the Gold Coast, and just as I left the Transit Box scurvy hit, waylaying all 3 KC's on the board as they were attempting to transit after me. I took advantage of the freedom to capture a merchant before heading for the Caribbean.

Once in the Caribbean I sailed for Santiago, where I bribed the governor for a Safe Haven. At this point I had over 70 Notoriety while the active Dummy pirates were in single digits with no loot, so as long as I played it safe I should be in position to win the game.

I decided the port of Guadeloupe looked inviting for an attack, figuring that would give me the additional Notoriety I needed to finish the game. En route I found a Merchant at sea and raided it, coming up with little loot but another Hostage heading to the Spanish port of Honduras. Considering my Safe Haven was the Spanish port of Santiago, I saw no reason to torture the Hostage for information on a Port I had no interest in attacking. Instead I reversed course to head back to Santiago to ransom him off. That's when disaster hit.

I was intercepted by a Warship. It was a weak ship belonging to the Spanish armada, my brig had no problem evading it. However we became becalmed and could not leave the vicinity of the Warship. Time and time again Random Events forced battle between us. With my brig I was able to beat of the Warship for a time, gaining Notoriety each time. That came with a cost though, as I took damage each time. Eventually the Warship was able to sustain a battle with me.

I took 4 points of damage in a battle, but with my Cunning I thought I had found a way out. The Spanish Armada was smarter than I gave them credit for though, and was able to cut me off, inflicting 5 points of damage and sinking me. With 87 Notoriety and over 1300 pounrs of loot, and my opponents being barely noticeable in Pirate society, I lost thanks to a Warship belonging to the allies running my Safe Haven. Some days it doesn't pay to be a Pirate.

One thing I learned from this play is that if I want to start outside of the Caribbean its not worth making a long term plan there. The oceans shrink very quickly when the Dummy players start sending warships and KC's your way. And with the only way out being in the same corner(s) that they start in, there isn't much room to maneuver to get away.

The person who last had a turn?
The player who conducted the last Operation continues to draw cards until another player receives a turn (6.2), so the player that draws a Warship card gets to choose to either move all of the Warships that are already on the map, or place a new Warship.

Matt Davis wrote:
2. Ousting vs. Blockading. A warship/KC has to actually be able to enter the port to oust a pirate, yes? And if a warship/KC can enter the port, it's the controller's choice whether they blockade or oust?
Yes to both.

Matt Davis wrote:
Also, in the way of ousting, the rules say that if a pirate is ousted, they pray that they get another turn before the ousting ship does. But if it's a KC, it would take two more turns for the KC to attack, right? 1 turn to move out of port, and then the next to attack? A warship, though, could move out of port and attack that same turn.
That's a very interesting question!

While normally it does cost one Movement Point to raise anchor and move out to sea, which would suggest that a KC in port would need two turns to attack an ousted Pirate (one turn to raise anchor, another turn to intercept), none of the KC rules say this. A literal reading of 8.51 is that a Pirate can enter a sea hex containing an anchored KC without undergoing interception, but if the Pirate starts his turn in such a hex he must leave or he will risk being intercepted, even if the KC is currently at anchor.

Thus I think that the part of 13.5 that you quoted is indeed correct and that this is an exception to the normal situation that a KC requires two turns to intercept a Pirate at sea (one turn to enter the Pirate's hex, another turn to intercept). But I haven't had time to check around to see if there's any errata or other discussion of this situation.

Matt Davis wrote:
3. When bribing governors or buying letters of marque, I assume you have to use net worth that is currently in hand? That is to say, stashed net worth is unavailable for use for the rest of the game, and thus you should subtract it from your ship log once it's stashed?
Correct. You make a side note of each stash, which removes it entirely from play unless your Pirate is lucky enough to be able to retire.
Thread: Warship visibility, Ousting/blockading, Net Worth

I just picked up a copy of this (yes, the old version), and I'm keen to give it a try. I've got a few rules questions, though.

1. When placing a warship, do you get to look at it or not? I think no, as 2.34, which describes the warship chits, says "...combat and speed ratings, which are known only the player moving them at the time." Also, when you draw an action card that says "Move or place warship", who gets to do that? The person who last had a turn?

2. Ousting vs. Blockading. A warship/KC has to actually be able to enter the port to oust a pirate, yes? And if a warship/KC can enter the port, it's the controller's choice whether they blockade or oust? Also, in the way of ousting, the rules say that if a pirate is ousted, they pray that they get another turn before the ousting ship does. But if it's a KC, it would take two more turns for the KC to attack, right? 1 turn to move out of port, and then the next to attack? A warship, though, could move out of port and attack that same turn.

3. When bribing governors or buying letters of marque, I assume you have to use net worth that is currently in hand? That is to say, stashed net worth is unavailable for use for the rest of the game, and thus you should subtract it from your ship log once it's stashed?

Several of my questions I was able to answer myself while looking back through the rules just now, but I'd still appreciate some reassurance that I'm thinking about this right. Thanks!

Thread: Re: Clarification on:Storm, Scurvy, and Injuries

On point 1, I believe it's the latter--this just came up today. Since it's inclusive, it should be the point at which the storm occurs plus 2 more hex rings.

On point 2, I don't think the KC makes a captain roll for scurvy, since there's no captain stats for the KC. The scurvy would only affect the combat rating of the KC.

On point 3...same argument, I don't think you keep track of injuries for a KC.

I feel pretty confident on point 1, points 2 and 3 are my best guess, for what it's worth.

Then again, it wasn't a big enough issue to include as a game mechanics.

"If someone did a game on the slave trade -- and its a useful proposition from the historical point-of-view, which has been seriously discussed, benefitting from the support of recent scholarship -- it would have to be done sensibly and carefully, as you would not want this type of detail causing local news reporters to give you a call."

Yes you would. That sort of attention is usually exactly what you are looking for. To that extent there is no such thing as Bad Publicity (altho, for some reason - see my comment directly above - it temporarily affected Don Imus negatively . . . temporaily, as we now see). If you need an example of ths in our hobby, ask Evan Jones (if you can find him) about how a New York Times article on his self-published game on making money by becoming a drug dealer brought him so much publicity - and sales - that it essentially turned his life around.

And y'ever see what's in some of these computer/video games?
Thread: Re: The Original, Unpublished, Infamous Torture Table

Nothing like bringing the hobby into disrepute. An academic paper is one thing, but sadly a game is another, and you are not going to be able to justify your Rape Table in this way even within the hobby, let alone outside, especially since its seems to me the spotty Herberts who've posted here so far need to realign their thinking. The problem with political correctness is that you have be correct yourself in order to demonstrate the lie, and to hold the moral high ground in order to combat it, and clearly this thread lost all that from the start. Brian's beliefs that However when it come to a game that is suppose to be a simulation I would like to have the torture included. If you can't simulate torture a few folks here and there then what's the fun of hoisting the Jolly Roger in the first place. are just a tad open to misinterpretation. If any of you have doubts about my point here, lets imagine portraying the life and times of Reg the Racist Pirate with a Racial Discrimination table that the local newspaper could review with your names attached prominently.

If someone did a game on the slave trade -- and its a useful proposition from the historical point-of-view, which has been seriously discussed, benefitting from the support of recent scholarship -- it would have to be done sensibly and carefully, as you would not want this type of detail causing local news reporters to give you a call. And yes it has happened before with topics we'd think were non-controverisal. Reaffirm your grip, lads.

A game on political correctness might be a better bet. I recall the non-physical but violent, long and bitter war the Native Americans fought with the feminists. Here "rape" could be presented as a political issue within the game. I suspect some think that is what this thread is about, but unfortunately it is not: the reality is being portrayed.

Thread: Blackbeard: Piratas poco afortunados

Thread: Clarification on:Storm, Scurvy, and Injuries

I've recently started playing this solitare, and a few things have come up that I would like clarified. I'm fairly sure I'm playing correct, however, the wording of the rules leaves me slightly confused at times.

1. Storms (9.3). Storms affect all ships at sea within three hexes the moving pirate (inclusive of his own hex). What troubles me is the language "inclusive of his own hex." I have interpreted this to mean that the triggering pirates hex is affected, as well as the three hex rings around it (37 hexes total). But, could "inclusive of his own hex" be interpreted to mean that you start counting the radius with the triggering pirates hex, meaning that only his hex and the two hex rings surrounding it would be affected (19 hexes total)?

2. Scurvy (17 C). I think I am doing this correctly, but I want to verify. When scurvy occurs, the ship suffers one point to combat damage, and must subtract two from his status on the crew unrest track. The Captain/KC must also roll to see if they contract scurvy, and they do so on the roll of a one. If a two is rolled, all hostages on board die. Cunning cannot be used to re-roll this roll. Additionally, since the ship suffered one point of comabt damage, the Captain must roll to see if he is injured (13.71), however, cunning can be used on this roll (this can be deadly, as any combination of scurvy, minor, or crippling wound is fatal (13.716)). If a Captain/KC is personally affected by scurvy (not just his ship), his Ratings are reduced by two. I realize what this means for a captain, but I'm less clear what it means for a KC. Does this mean that the KC subtracts two from his combat rolls? DOes he also subtract two from intercept rolls? (I have been playing that two is subtracted form combat rolls, bit note intercept rolls, logic being that scurvy does not affect a pirate captains intercept roll, but does affect his combat roll).

3. Injury (13.71) I've been playing that cunning can be used to re-roll injury rolls, as the cunning rules (22), state that they cannot be used on storms, illness, random placements, or events. I feel that illness and injury are two distinct things, and that illness refers to scurvy. When a pirate receives a crippling wound (13.713) his duel and enduracne ratings are permanently reduced by one. These will not increase even if the wound is recovered from later. His cruelty rating is increased by one (this increase stays even if the wound is recovered from later). All ratings except cruelty are reduced by three until he recovers (for a net reduction of four to his duel and endurance ratings). Even if he later recovers, you must still keep track of the specific crippling injury, becasue if a Captian/KC loses two of any limb/eye he is dead. What is the effect of injuries on a KC? For a minor injury, I have been subtracting two from their combat rolls (but not interception rolls, see above), and for crippling wounds I have been subtracting three from his combat rolls (but not interception rolls).

So, Blackbeard veterans, am I playing correctly?

Thread: Re: Double scurvy?

From the rulebook: "There are no additional penalties should the new Random Event result in Scurvy against the same Pirate/KC again."

I'm in the middle of a solitaire game right now and, like you, I found myself wondering how to determine where to start the dummy pirates. I decided to make a dice roll for each dummy pirate and place them in the hex with a merchant vessel that is closest to the shipping lane indicated by the die roll.

I don't recall ever changing oceans with a dummy pirate. I probably wouldn't do it unless that pirate is at an obvious disadvantage in that ocean for some reason (or reasons), such as the ports being anti-pirate, or he has an attack history against those nationalities, or a KC/Warship is breathing down his neck. Common sense seems like the best approach.

You should have 4 of each type (8 cards in total).

Your deal was good because you traded Tempus for HeroQuest.
Now you make another good deal by trading Blackbeard away for anything else.

Scanning and making them public availible here could be a problem with copyright I guess.

Maybe when back home, I could have a look who is the author and if he can be reached somehow to ask for permission.
You could maybe just mail it to us who are interested.
And then could we place a log in the forum who was the latest to request the article, and that person is responsible to send it to the next requestor. Brilliant idea...or not

I just got this game in a trade. Lucky me
I have waited a long time to get my hand on this game.

The game was in a so-so looking box with everything just thrown into the box

When I sorted everything out I found that one of the ship log card is missing.

I have four cards showing the Schooner/Brigantine and three cards showing the 3-Masted Square rigger/Sloop.
Is there just one of the 3-Masted Square rigger/Sloop cards missing or is there a Flute or other type of card that represent the missing eight card??

Thanks for your help.

Traded away a Tempus, and got Blackbeard and Heroquest instead.
Good deal IMHO.

I find you really need to get that first booty load in to get the morale up.

On the other hand, when one of the opponents get tossed from the ship early on, it adds some colour to the game.

That's the weird thing about this game in solo mode.

Games can last anywhere from 10 minutes to hours on end.

I really hate it when the Crew Unrest Random event pops up early because it can mean a quick and pointless end for your captain.

Lets hope it still happens?

I wonder if Richard Berg's recent hospitalization will effect the release schedule for Blackbeard.
