I'd also recommend ditching the 1-card per turn limit.

Half the fun in this game is screwing with your neighbors with the evocative cards, so why limit that fun unnecessarily!?!?

Thread: What is the definitive Zombies!!! variant rules set?

There are many, many different rules variants available for the Zombies!!! game.

Is there a definitive set of house rules that make this game deliver entertainment in a reasonable timeframe (1-1.5 hours or less)?

If so, is it one of the variant files available on BGG (presumably the highest rated one on either this or the Zombies 1st Ed entry)?

Ideally I am not looking for a few suggestions of rules tweaks etc but a comprehensive document if one is available.

(I played the 1st Ed rules once a long time ago and found the game too long and a little futile even though the components and theme were really great. It looks to me that there is a lot of petential for fun in the box and that with the various expansions it could be entertaining. I would love to get a working version of the game to scratch the wholsale zombie carnage itch that Last Night on Earth doesnt scratch but I find that there are so many suggestions that it has become hard to filter out the best one(s)).

Any takers?

Thread: Freaky Zombie Kings

Author's note: I tried to write these variant rules to fit in with the vanilla game as much as possible. That said, I feel this variant would work best if the only winning condition for the human players is making it to the center of the Helipad/Cabin/whatever, and ignoring the 25 kill rule. I also recommend that the player with the most zombies place the Helipad/Cabin/whatever, and not the player in last place which is the standard rule. I feel this fixes the flaw where a player can more or less do nothing the entire game, place the Helipad, and sprint there with fresh life and bullets. This also still maintains the competitiveness in slaughtering zombies, and gives the players the choice of risking permanent death to get an edge in placing the Helipad to their advantage. This may make for a longer game (whether that's a good thing or a bad thing I leave to you), but it should also be a lot more entertaining.

Also, the rules don't specify what precisely to use as Freaky Zombie King pawns. I'll leave this to the players' discretion. Personally, I've been using some WH40k zombie models, but you should just use whatever's available. Thanks for reading.

Freaky Zombie King Rules
The rules will refer to zombies or zombie dogs as just “zombies.” When referring to just the Zombie King player's pawn, it will specifically say “Zombie King.”

Freaky Zombie King Setup
After a player has died, at the beginning of the player's next turn, he will respawn at the center square of the nearest named location that is not the Cabin, and replace his Shotgun Guy pawn with a Freaky Zombie King pawn of the corresponding color. The player now must follow an altered set of movement and combat rules. Zombies may no longer attack the player (and vice-versa), and Zombie Kings may not attack each other. The player may no longer win the game via the normal win conditions. Together, the Zombie King players must stop the surviving Humans from winning by killing them and converting them into zombies. The Zombie King player who kills the last surviving Human (either with a Zombie King or with a zombie that the player moved to the Human's square) is the winner of the game.

Each Zombie King player is allowed 3 heart tokens and three event cards. All other tokens are removed, and the player may never pick up additional tokens from the game board or gain tokens through other means (even with the use of an event card). If a Zombie King player picks up an event card dealing with heart or bullet tokens, the player may still play the card, substituting zombies for tokens.

Turn Sequence Overview
During a turn, you must perform the following steps in exact order:
1.Draw a tile from the map deck pile.
2.Attach the map tile to any legal space on the current map.
3.Combat any Humans on your current space.
4.Draw back up to 3 event cards, if you have less than 3.
5.Roll a six-sided die, the result is your zombie summon roll (see Zombie Summon Rules).
6.Roll a six-sided die, the result is your total movement roll.
7.Move (see Freaky Zombie King Movement Rules).
8.You may discard one event card from your hand.
After deciding to discard an event card or not, the turn is over and play proceeds clockwise around the table.

Freaky Zombie King Combat Rules
-Any time you begin your turn on the same space as a Human player or land on a space with a Human player, or when a Human player lands on your space, combat takes place.
-Combat is resolved by both players rolling a six-sided die in turn. The Human player rolls first. A 4, 5, or 6 is required by either player to wound the other.
-If the Human player's roll is unsuccessful (lower than a 4), they may add enough bullet tokens to raise it to the target number at a 1 to 1 ratio.
-If the Human player does not have enough bullet tokens to raise their roll or they choose not to, they must discard a full heart token.
-After the Human player's combat turn has finished, the Zombie King player rolls a six-sided die. You also require a 4, 5, or 6 to wound the Human.
-As the Zombie King is not allowed bullet tokens, if the roll fails, you must sacrifice a heart token.
-The combating players take turns rolling the die until one player runs out of heart tokens.
-If the Human player runs out of heart tokens, their piece is removed from the board and they must begin their next turn as a Freaky Zombie King.
-If you run out of heart tokens as a Freaky Zombie King, your piece is removed from the board and you must begin your next turn in the center square of the nearest named location (excluding the Cabin). If you died in a named location, you must respawn in the next-closest named location.
-If, when you respawn as a Zombie King on a square occupied by zombies, those zombies are immediately added to your pool. If the square is occupied by a human, combat occurs. If the square is occupied by another Zombie King, you must respawn on an adjacent square.

Zombie Summon Rules
-Before you may move, you must roll for zombie summoning. This allows you to draw zombies from your kill pool and place them on the board, on the same tile as your Zombie King.
-The number of zombies you may summon is determined by rolling a six-sided die. The number on the die corresponds with the number of zombies that may be summoned You may summon less zombies than the amount on the die if you desire.
-If you run out of room on the tile for more zombies, they may not be placed on other tiles. The excess zombies will simply not be summoned.
-If played with other expansions, then you may decide which kinds of zombies to place on each square.
-If your pool runs out of zombies, you may no longer summon any zombies.

Freaky Zombie King Movement Rules
-Total movement amount is determined by rolling one six-sided die.
-You must divide the amount on the die between your Zombie King and the other zombies. For instance, if you roll a 6, you may move your Zombie King 6 spaces, or you may move your Zombie King 3 spaces and then move 3 separate zombies, etc. You may move no zombies if you wish.
-You may never move diagonally.
-Any Human player encountered by your Zombie King during movement must be fought before movement continues.
-Zombie Kings, just as with other pieces, may only enter buildings through entrances/exits or doors.
-Zombie Kings may not enter the Cabin tile, but you may still move zombies onto that tile.
-Zombie Kings may not share space with zombies or other Zombie Kings, but may pass through them while moving.

Hey,

If someone could post a photo of the game with all its expansions, I'll give them a bonus geek gold. It can just be the boxes, as long as it's a decent-looking picture.

I am making a variant for Zombies!!! where the shotgun dudes are participants in a game show, killing zombies and racing to the helipad for cash and prizes. I wanted the possible prizes to include a Zombies!!! game with all the expansions, but I only have access to one expansion right now.

Facts:

Designer: Todd Breitenstein & Dave Aikins
Year: 2006
Players: 2 - 6
Ages: 10 +

Factors:

Presentation:
Covers the overall look and feel of the game (graphics, box art, board art, pawns, etc.) Scored 1-5

Zombies 2nd is put together very well. The box art is well done and attractive to any Zombie afficianado. There is plenty of down-home gory goodness and a chainsaw to boot. Play tiles are equally nice, with sections of city landscape straight out of a Romero flick. Pawns are solid color plastic, and zombie pawns are a nice putrid green. I suppose you could prime and paint the models if you were so inclined, however I doubt they would hold up to normal play as they are flexible plastic (almost rubbery). Ammo and life counters are typical die cut punch outs with a bullet (ammo) and heart (life) printed on them. An easy 3.5 stars for presentation.

Rules:
Rates how easy to understand the rules are, and how those rules apply to gameplay. Scored 1-5

Rules are pretty simple as would be expected. The rulebook is plain, but well organized. Movement is ruled by dice roll as is fighting the Zombies. The active player first takes a tile and places it anywhere it will fit. Then he/she places zombies according to the prescribed number needed. Next the die is rolled for player movement. At anytime, should a player and a zombie occupy the same square, it is ON. 4+ you kill the zombie. Bullets and Life give rerolls. When you are out of life, you die and go back to the start. Finally, the active player rolls a die and must move that many Zombies one square. 4 Stars on Rules

Time:
Covers the amount of time needed to play based on a standard knowledge of the rules. Scored 1-5

BGG calls for a 2 hour game, but it really depends on game play and luck. I’ve seen games go longer, and games go much quicker. All in all, if you enjoy the splatter style game you won’t mind the time. Also, you can shorten the game by cutting down the number of tiles. Very flexable, 4 Stars.

Gameplay:
Rates how the game mechanics work to create an enjoyable experience. Scored 1-5

This is the perfect “Screw your Buddy” game. Many times in our games players will assault others with Zombies to keep them from reaching the chopper pad or collecting 25 kills. There is a card dynamic that triggers random events. These are the bread and butter of messing up your opponent’s day. Just when he/she thinks they have it won, you play a card that makes them move backwards, or put 10 Zombies between them and victory. Other cards act as weapons, making it easy to lay back to rest the restless. Zombies is not a game to take seriously, or allow your feelings to be hurt. If you aren’t able to play a carefree game, I’d stay away from this one. If the opposite is true, you’ll have a blast. 4 Stars.

Overall:
Represents an average of Presentation, Rules, Time, & Gameplay. Shown 1-5

I always enjoys a good game (or games) of Zombie. It’s fun to see how each will progress. Sometimes the cityscape is long and narrow. Other times it’s a true urban jungle, a maze of brain eating horrors. Some games are a fight to the safety of the chopper, while others are a shotgun blasting romp to 25 kills. Overall 4 stars.
I think you'd be better off just keeping one of the sets shrink wrapped, and eventually break it open once the first set has worn out beyond a playable state.

By this time you'll more than likely have lost interest in the game, and will be shelving a mint set. It'll save you a lot of time and trouble trying to make something sturdier which could possibly end up with you ruining 2-3 'fairly sturdy' sets.

Thread: Modifying the game tiles, help.

I'd like to take my Zombies!!! tiles and make some thicker, Catan-esque tiles. I think they will resist warping much better as well as not be as easily shifted on the table.

My current plan is to buy a huge sheet of thick, hard card stock (that's what she said) and 3 sets of 6.66 (I have 6 and 2nd edition, so that's all I need/want) and glue two tiles and card stock in the middle. I know this will make the tiles thicker, but I'm trying to increase the longevity and ease of playability of the game.

Any thoughts/advice?

All you have to do is request it when you order $10.00 or more from our web store. But, you have to remember to ask because we won't send it if you don't.

We USUALLY take them to conventions as well.
Hello Yoki,
Sorry nobody answered this question earlier. Yes, you can use any tokens for the "guts." But, then you wouldn't get all the cool cards and stuff!

In all seriousness, which expansions you buy is all based on what you like. Each expansion adds a little twist to the game. None of them add major changes, just minor tweaks and add-ons.

For major change, you are going to have to wait for Humans...
Todd
Twilight Creations, Inc.

I'm just about to purchase the game, and wanted an expansion or two along with it out of the gate, so I've found this thread very interesting. One question though, don't the Guts tokens in Zombies!!! 5: School's Out Forever make it an important expansion? Or does the Guts rules not impact the game much?

Edit: I just read the rules, and found that the Guts rules are so simple I could easily use any tokens I have lying around to represent Guts.

Here was my own posted ages ago on the TCI website "Alone":

http://www.twilightcreationsinc.com/zombies/alone.php

It works, but I'd like to go back & re-do it, specifically to address the issues of Named locations (I'd like to add back in decisions of if/when to enter/search them)

My thought was, seperate out the Location Specific Cards & put them aside. If you enter & clear that location, you get the weapon in question.

Here's another set on Ye Olde Geek as well:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/24065

---MS

Thread: Solitaire Zombies!!!

This is kind of a double post. i posted the same under the Original Zombies!!

Been working on a way to play Zombies!!! solo. here is what I have come up with so far. Suggestions welcome. I have played one game with these rules and they seem to work OK. Let me know what you guys think.

Zombies!!! Solitaire Rules.

Winning
The only way to win is to make it to the center square of the Helipad and survive for 2 turns. (Arriving turn plus an additional turn). No need to collect Zombie kills. All killed Zombies are returned to the zombie pool.

Setup
Remove the “Town Square” and the “Helipad” from the tile deck. Place the “Town Square” and place Player token on the center square. Draw the top 4 tiles and place them connected to the town square. Place zombies as appropriate. Place the “Helipad” into the bottom half of the tile deck as usual.

Turn Sequence
1. Combat any zombies on player space (As usual)
2. Draw cards as normal
3. Hero movement remains the same
4. Zombie movement. The number of zombies moved is D6+2. Zombies must always move toward the player. The closest, moveable zombies must be the ones that are moved. (Can’t just move the ones at the other end of the board)
5. Any sequence rules not addressed here are handled as normal

Placing New Tiles
Tiles placement is handle the same except with the following change. Additional tiles are place only when the player would step off the map.
Zombies are placed as normal.
Hearts and Bullets are placed randomly. Determine the number of hearts and bullets. Place them facedown and shuffle them. Then place them on the map tile facedown.

Combat Rules
Combat rules remain unchanged except for the following additional rule.
Ranged Attack: The player may take one ranged attack before any movement is taken. The ranged attack cannot be into the same or adjacent square of the player. To make the attack spend one bullet and rule for an attack as normal.

Addendum:

OK. I played again tonight with the new solo rules. I found a bit of a problem. Most of the Event cards I drew where cards that needed to be used against the other player. I thought of adding a rule that states: One of the cards in your hand must be played. With anything that would effect the opposing player actually effecting you. Then at the end of your turn you could still discard one card.

Better idea, anyone?

Dave3 wrote:
Hi having just joined i cant find the rules forum which you suggest. Thanks Dave.

Each game has a home page, and about halfway down the page are forums discussing that particular game. There are links to filter the game's forums for certain categories, like reviews, rules, variants, and such.

Here's a link to the page for Zombies!!! Second Edition, for example. You can find the page for a game using the search bar, at the top of each page of the site. If more than one game matches your search, you'll get a list, just like in a typical search engine.

Hi Dave,

I'd highly suggest going over to the yahoogroup at zombiesbg@yahoogroups.com or you can email me directly (kerry.b@fuse.net). You'll get answers to your questions a lot quicker as we very rarely frequent our individual games over here. There's also a FAQ on our website as well as many, many scenarios and alternate rules (www.twilightcreationsinc.com).

Happy Zombie Hunting!

Kerry Breitenstein
Twilight Creations, Inc.

Thread: Re: EVENT CARDS IN ZOMBIES GAME HELP PLEASE

There are several games called "Zombies", so I don't know which one you are talking about (which is one part of the problem with posting a game-specific question in the general forum).

Perhaps you are talking about Zombies!!! Second Edition, in which case the rules forum of that game would be appropriate:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/forum/66/boardgame/23972

You can search for a game by its title using the "Search games" field at the top of BGG pages.
Cheers,
russ
