I have both starter deck packs, and am looking for a card breakdown of each deck, as a friend pulled them out and ended up mixing them up a bit.

Thread: Re: Dead?

Yes, they are. The starters of the base game include two 55-card-decks, that are preconstructed. There are two of those starters, each with two different races. So when buying both starters you get four different races with a preconstructed deck. Those decks play quite well against each other.

The Great War Starter Kit

&

The Day of Darkness Starter Kit

Same with the Exiled Expansion that is sold in starters and boosters, too. The four Races of the Exiled can be played stand-alone or mixed with one of the older races because technically they are a smaller faction within one of the four starting races.

It seems the game is dead.

This seems good and bad. It's too bad the game didn't take off and that more people didn't get into it. But, now cards will become a lot cheaper to buy.

I've played a bunch of times and haven't seen any runaway leader problem or anything broken about the game mechanics. I think its only worth playing as a 2-player game, but see no need to rewrite the rulebook.
This game is broken and Exiled does nothing to address the fundamental flaws in the games core rules.

I don't work for the company, but I'd like to address some of these since I completely disagree with them.

How does the Exiled solve the problem of opponents being able to warp directly to your home at any time?

Opponents should be able to warp directly to your home at any time as the primary goal of the game is to destroy your opponents starbase, which is in their home system. Its a region of space like any other and if you leave it under-defended then its going to be attacked. There are cards which make it more difficult, but its in no way a problem with the game. It helps keep it from dragging out and keeps players on their toes as I have won games from people not paying attention to how much defense they kept at home.

How does it fix the incredible advantage given to players attacking a Starbase (i.e., the attackers ships deal damage twice, but the defender only deals damage once)?

The attacking ships do not "deal damage twice" to any target nor do they attack twice.

X players Ships attack Y Starbase.
Y player Ships defend Y Starbase.
X & Y Ships battle.
If Y fails to fight off the attack then X's Ships damage the Starbase as that was always the target of their attack.

What I think you want is for another turn to go by after the fight with the defenders is successful and then they attack the Starbase again to do damage to it. This wouldn't work for several reasons. For one it'd give you a chance to bring more defenders in before the attacker gets their next turn (unfair advantage to the defender) and also you could defend against an armada with only one ship since even after they kill that ship they can't damage the Starbase yet (unfair advantage to the defender).

What about the fact that it costs money and time to bring an Outer Region into play, but in doing so you leave your starbase more vulnerable and will likely not hold the region long enough to really benefit from it?

Not sure how much "time" it costs, but you aren't forced to play any Outer Regions and how long you hold onto one depends on many factors which change from game to game. You don't have to leave your Starbase under-defended when you play an Outer Region. And you may not hold that Outer Region for more than a turn or two, but that can apply to the player who takes it from you as well. Also most space empires games include claiming regions of space and/or taking them from other players.

Why on Earth would you waste money and time on an Outer Region when you could instead buy a ship that can help you attack and defend?

Economics. Outer Regions can produce more money and that means more and/or bigger ships to attack or defend with. You spend a little money now to gain more income each turn (pays for itself quickly). You could buy another ship now or you could buy a bigger or multiple ships in a turn or two. Short term gains versus long term investments. Again this is one of the decisions in the game that I think make it worth playing because there are multiple factors to consider when deciding to play one of your Outer Regions or not.

This game and it's expansion are crushing disappointments made all the more bitter by a player base content to use broken rules for a game that could have been so much better.

I think you've brought disappointment upon yourself. EVE is a great streamlined 4x-style game. The stuff you complain about is the stuff I'm thankful is there as it creates player conflict, significant choices, and keeps the game under 30 minutes. For the Core Set, I wouldn't change anything as I think its a brilliant design. For The Exiled, I never saw it as necessary but wouldn't call it bad.
Thread: Re: Local Events and Players in Nothern California?

Sure. So, the problem is that your opponent can Warp directly to your Starbase and attack it in the same turn without you having any sort of defensive action to recall your ships. That's not too bad I suppose, but it does mean that you have to keep a fairly decent force on patrol, still there are some major flaws that result:

1. Outer Regions are suicide - To benefit from an outer region you must control it. To control it you must have ships there. If you have ships at an outer region, they can't defend your Starbase. It's a catch 22; send enough ships to control and maintain the outer region but then your starbase is vulnerable to attack or send only enough to control the outer region and probably lose it the next turn or have your starbase destroyed. So, the increased income you might earn from controlling an outer region isn't going to be worth the effort. Not to mention that the money spent to bring it into play will likely go towards aiding your opponent more than helping yourself. You spend resources on something that is too easily taken away from you and which can't defend your starbase. You're much better off spending those resources on more ships or your starbase itself.

2. Kamikaze wins every time - One race has access to an ability called Kamikaze. The purpose of it is clear, I'm sure, but the problem is that it is just too effective. The ships that possess it are all very cheap. Even worse is that the kamikaze ability is resolved before anything else. It's all too easy for a starbase to be destroyed from nothing but kamikaze ships. The fleet that you kept home to defend is utterly useless against ships with that ability.

3. Deal damage twice - In the event that your opponent is playing a race they like rather than the race they know can win the fastest, you're still faced with the fact that the rules of the game want the game to end as quickly as possible. Your opponents fleet of ships will inflict damage on your ships as necessary to destroy them and your defending ships will fire back. The problem is that combat doesn't end there, instead the attacker now deals the full damage of each surviving ship to your starbase, effectively allowing the attacker the unfair advantage of shooting twice.

Those are the 3 biggest problems with the game and for me they make it pretty much unplayable. The Exile expansion has not corrected any of the problems with the rules, and these are _rules_ problems not cards with overly powerful abilities (even kamikaze counts as a rule not a broken card). Instead, their solution to the problem (well, the only problem they admit to is the kamikaze rush victory) is to print new starbase cards for each race that are exactly the same and when upgraded say something to the effect of opponents can't warp to your starbase region while you control 3 outer regions. Mind you that you can't bring more than 1 outer region into play per turn. This type of magic bullet card is utterly worthless as it does not address the real problem. It's like a doctor putting a bandage on a broken leg and then telling you to walk it off, "The pain let's you know that it's healing." That may be a bit harsh I suppose. It seems as though my friend and I are the only people who think the game is completely broken.

It's a shame because the game looks fantastic and I really wanted to like it, but I already own another CCG that is very similar with far better rules and strategy though not as pretty and sadly now defunct.

Best Regards,
Craig

I don't know of any stores that hold events. I saw mention of it in the program book for one of the local game conventions, I think it was DunDraCon. I'd offer to play but I utterly hate the game since it's totally broken. They tried to fix the problem by releasing a few "magic bullet" cards in the Exile set, but really it's the rules themselves that have to change to make the game playable. It's a shame too because it sure is a pretty game. Anyway, good luck finding other players.

Best Regards,
Craig

The release of the first expansion, The Exiled, has been delayed due to printer problems twice.

Now they posted in the official forums:

"A more formal announcement will follow on Monday, but I thought you guys might like to know now:

The Exiled will be available at Gen Con, and is scheduled to be in stores the 29th. Prerelease events will take place the weekend before the 29th."

(posted on 2007/08/03 21:45)

So we will have to wait a bit more

Thread: Re: Starter deck enough on its own?

I have both starter packs (2 decks each) and a few booster packs. The starter "Day of Darkness" is Amarran (Tough defensive ships) vs. Minmatarran (Cheap -more offensive ships) The other is "The Great War" with the Gallente (Strong economy - average ships)vs. the Caldari (Strong Military -average economy). They are all made up of mostly frigates and a few cruisers and trade vessels for each side. You can mix and match playing Gallentes vs Amarr with no problem. All 4 decks are fairly well balanced as I have seen each win in turn used by different friends of mine who used different strategies. I reccomend getting at least both the starter packs to add more variety as your budget allows. You can then play up to 4 players!
Here is an intro to the game for more info from the official website:
http://www.eve-ccg.com/tutorial/

Good luck!
Thanks for your response, CRA.

I'll probably never get to try out the online version of the game, although I've always wanted to be involved in it in some capacity, just because this computer's a bit too underpowered for it. I guess that's why I want this game. And... spaceships!

I've seen two starter decks, one was The Day of Darkness and the other was The Great War. Would you say either could be used by themselves? I can't imagine spending 40 bucks on a single, two player card game so it might be best to start with one. What's the difference, ultimately, between the two?
Thread: Re: Starter deck enough on its own?

I'd think its fine with just a starter set. I've played a bunch of times with just the starters, but mixed matches out of all four decks not just two that come in one starter so I can't say for sure how that is. If by "good decks" you mean do they work without needing to buy more cards than yes they are good. The basic gameplay revolves around generating income from different sources to bring out ships, defenses, etc. The starters have all the cards needed to do that efficiently. I'd say with the starters we had at least as much fun as any two-player boxed game I've tried.
Thread: Starter deck enough on its own?

Do you think this game would be playable with just one starter set? Would it be fun in a non-competitive setting, like bought as any other two-player game? Or is this the sort of thing that needs money to make a good deck?

This game looks appealing, but I stay away from collecti/able games.

Thanks.

Thread: New "CHARACTERS" in EVE: Second Genesis Expansion

NEWS flash.

There will be new "character" cards that you can put on ships and dock at your home base. This adds a great element to the game.

From the EVE site:

"Characters are designed to bring a host of new tactical abilities to Second Genesis while remaining nonessential to basic gameplay. Characters can be put to work in a couple different ways: The first is as an agent, docked in a starbase. While docked, the character grants its listed agent bonus. The second is as a pilot, attached to a specific ship. Once a ship has docked at a starbase and attached a character, it gains the benefit of the listed pilot ability. Additionally, if the character grants any command abilities, they can be used as though they were attached to the ship, on the same side as they appear on the character (yes, this allows a ship that already possesses a command on that side to activate both at once). Finally, if a ship piloted by a character is destroyed, its controller can pay the character’s clone cost (found in the blue cross at the top of the card) to prevent it from leaving play, returning it to his/her starbase instead."

Hi Michael, It really is a very good game. I picked up a Starter and some boosters when Skyhaven first got them in. It has a lot of depth, I really like the artwork and the mechanics are solid. So far only one member of our 'group' has got into it. Give it another go.
Cheers,
Paul.

Thread: Teetering on the Edge... one game of EVE
Ok, I'm on a board game only diet. Tonight was the games night and because I couldn't find my copy of Alamo we played Del's selection of EVE. I'd kinda sworn off CCG type dealies cause you just have to keep buying to get anywhere and my resources are not infinite. Fortunately for me Del decided to invite me over to the dark side and give me a peek at a new CCG to me.

Del, talked me through the basics and we did Rock/Scissor/Paper to choose who goes first. I won the toss and proceeded on. The game was fun, a few interesting cards gave me a bit of an edge in the locations and this let me get some extra cash moving. Del played a good solid, relatively non aggressive game to give me an idea of how it runs... I think I won the game only because Eric was distracting him from watching me play a few times. Thus I was able to put together a large armada of ships that went to his Home Station and after blasting the guardian ships away I 'just' barely took out his Station.

I'm seriously considering picking up a starter deck as it's two person playable and this would at least allow some challenge.

Thanks Del.

Aye I have to agree - having recently tried it out with two demo decks (found at the game's website). The game sure was a lot more fun than I expected it would be and the rules very easy to understand, we both got into the game fast! Haven't looked at the advanced rules yet though.

Pictures from the try-out has been submitted.

Edit: There, I got both starter decks for only $18 (33 with shipping) at eBay so now I'm all set for a real game! ^_^

This game is fantastic.

I ranked it a 10 as my favorite CCG. It has a great feel and it does not suffer from a "runaway leader problem" - the only problems it has are those that are associated with all CCG's: Card draw probabilities and rare powerful cards. I find 2 player very agreeable. I spent about 100$ on this game. With the 2 starter decks and hell of alot of boosters. It was totally worth it.

Thread: Re: Comments on this game???

I've been having a lot of fun with it. I played in the big GenCon tournament (where the game was released), but have mostly just played a handful of demo games and practice games otherwise. There are a lot of interesting strategies you can take with this game (there are at least 6 alternate win conditions) but I haven't yet had the opportunity to see if any of them are really feasable in a highly-competitive environment.

Everyone's first tactical mistake seems to be to focus on expansion and controlling the "outer regions" (cards that can be played to give you new places to play locations and move ships - control of an outer region gives you an extra helpful ability as well). It is important to be able to do so, but it is MORE important to protect your home, as you can have a huge fleet spread across three or four regions, but lose the game because you didn't defend your headquarters vigorously enough while expanding.

Most games play quickly, but if for some reason noone gets an early edge, a game can go 40-60 minutes as players jockey for attack positions, build their fleet and look for an opening.

I haven't played multiplayer yet, but I can see it being quite interesting, though the mechanics don't currently allow you to "combine fleets" as allies - probably a good thing in the long run, but I'm sure someone will come up with multiplayer rules that allow it at some point.

All in all I'm hoping this very pretty game takes off, I'd like to be able to play more.

Thread: Re: Comments on this game???

I tried a quick introductory game last night with my wife. The rules were pretty easy to follow. If you have played Eve-Online you will appreciate the setting/flavour a lot more, but my wife who has never played the computer game still enjoyed it. The pacing was fast once we had a few rounds to see how you actually played cards and built up your home region. One aspect I liked was assembly rules. Basically, the larger the ship you are building the longer it takes to come into play. You won't be popping out hoards of battleships even if you have the money to build them without some special cards to augment your assembly time. This is a good balancing factor so that you can fight against the larger ships with smaller faster built frigates and use swarm tactics to take the big boys down. The combat takes place simultaneously, so you can use all your smaller ships to attack the larger ones at once to bring them down.

We played with the standard starter decks so they were fairly evenly matched. Her Caldari deck seemed to be more powerful militarily to my Gallente deck. But it was the better mining cards that allowed me to get a higher income going and keep the momentum in my favor. It would be very hard to catch up once someone gets the upper hand in a 2 player game. I have to say that I wasn't very nice as my competitive nature got the best of me instead of just having fun learning how to play. She was feeling a little stifled as I would swarm her larger cruisers as soon as they were built with my smaller frigates.

Overall, I would say that it is a fun game. I gave it an '8'. With 3 or more players I think it would be much better as you be forced to consider defending from others while going on the offence, but I am sure this true of any CCG. I will be getting more cards from boosters to increase the options build some more specialized decks. Let me know if you want to know more. I will playing this game again soon.
