Question - how many players were in each game of your playtests? I'm thinking that the number of players in the game could potentially affect the balance.

I ran playtests from 2-4 players, but the 4-player version got the most attention.

Thread: Re: First Play, fun but I have design issues.

I've only had one play so far, so I don't feel quite up for going into a detailed review yet, but I figured I'd comment on some of the things we saw - and a lot of them were the same issues addressed here.

rgkermitfrog wrote:
The layout of the [board] was disappointing. The "Goals" (Shock and Harm) are printed where you lay your cards. Everyone is constantly sliding the cards around to see what the goal is, even if you lay the cards out at the other end of the space.

I read this thread before playing, so I was kind of expecting this to be a nuisance, but it wasn't too bad. The fact that most areas were being taken out with 4 or fewer cards probably helped it not be a big deal I imagine - the low number cards were not seeing much play. Ideally, the requirements really should be off to the side somehow, but I think a fair bit of the board will have to be tweaked to fit them somewhere that works well.

As I said, this wasn't a huge issue, but it should be improved in later versions if you can figure out a reasonable way to do so.

rgkermitfrog wrote:
The cobra special ability seems a little out of balance. The cobra player handily won and his score was almost twice the second place player.

We had the same result. Cobras started dominating and never stopped. First turn he too the Lavatory right off the bat, and later managed to snag both the pilot AND co-pilot solo. I think luck of the draw plays a part here certainly, but it still seems a bit on the powerful side.

macmoyer wrote:
Cobras can be pretty scary... they're a blast to play. But it takes a good combination of Bite and Hiss/Rattle cards to make their special ability work, and that takes a some luck. During playtests, I tracked victories by snake species, and it's pretty even over multiple plays. Once you've played the game a time or two, you notice that you have to use those Stomp! and Woo-Pah! cards on your opponent's cobras when they head for the cockpit, or they'll rake in a ton of points.

Question - how many players were in each game of your playtests? I'm thinking that the number of players in the game could potentially affect the balance. Or, also, the combination of species in play during the game may also affect the balance.

Our game was 3 players, with Kingsnakes out of the game. This environment might've made it easier for Cobras to excel, but maybe we just didn't play as well

rgkermitfrog wrote:
Also the thin board card stock was sliding everywhere when people touched cards or snakes.

We didn't have any problem with this. Were you on some especially slippery surface, perhaps a glass table?

rgkermitfrog wrote:
We're also going to make modeling clay snakes, each gamer will model their own one night. Just seemed like fun and would up the theme tremendously.

Now, I don't obsess over awesome bits and pieces in games by any means; they're nice, but not essential for the most part. However, I agree with this - if you could find some way to affordably switch the generic pawns for color-coded snake pawns, that'd be awesome. The ideal would be to have them all look different too, of course, but even just generic snakes for everyone would be a very nice step up from the generic pawns.

We didn't see any major balance issues with CGI or Open the Emergency Exit!, though they didn't really come into play much in our one game.

Overall, quite fun. One of the guys I played with is already considering picking up his own copy =)

Thanks for the response.

Reviewing the board I see most card places list the actual goal digits in the last card position. That works! Seems there are only two card places which print the numbers in the middle of the card location.

Will definitely give the game more plays. The cobra player also kicked our butts in Viking Fury that night. He was just a lucky juggernaut the entire evening.

Thread: Re: First Play, fun but I have design issues.

Great! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for your comments, Randy!

"The 'Goals' (Shock and Harm) are printed where you lay your cards. Everyone is constantly sliding the cards around to see what the goal is, even if you lay the cards out at the other end of the space. Why weren't the goals placed in the plane where there are not any cards. It's easier to place the snakes not to cover the goals than trying to place the cards."

That's a fair point... I'd bet that's the most awkward part of the layout. My original layout was worse, but Trent Donelson, the visual designer, made some changes to make it work better. We usually start laying cards just to one side of the Spook/Harm requirements on the board, and we don't have space issues. That might help next time you play. I'll be sure to experiment with some alternate layouts for the next printing... I have some other ideas, too.

"The cobra special ability seems a little out of balance. The cobra player handily won and his score was almost twice the second place player."

Kingsnakes are a good spoiler for cobras, if they keep following them around in pairs, forcing them to share points. Kingsnakes: they're everywhere you want to be!

"I think I'll be removing the CGI card from the deck (I'll wait till more plays), but that card was powerful when played and pretty much locked up the cobras victory for the rest of the game."

It sounds like the cobras player got a heap of good luck that game. Definitely give CGI! a shot before you ditch it. Typically, a player has only five cards in her hand, and one of them is CGI! Chances are she'll need to use another card or two to move a snake into a prime, vulnerable area with no other snakes... then she has to have a couple of really stellar number cards to be able to throw the area into chaos in one turn. It's pretty sweet when you can pull it off, but it doesn't happen often. I worry more about the Open the Emergency Exit! card, myself.

"Also the thin board card stock was sliding everywhere when people touched cards or snakes. Will have to glue it to heavier cardboard stock soon."

We never saw too much trouble there, even when we were playtesting with a much lighter stock. But it can happen if the surface isn't friendly. I like your solution. I use cheap sticky notes on the underside if the table is slippery, and that works pretty well, too.

"We're also going to make modeling clay snakes, each gamer will model their own one night."

Sweet! Post pictures!

Thanks again for your comments!

If you read the criteria for ranking games, it is *not* ranking what you think is quality, it is what you're ranking how much you want to play it. I think Puerto Rico is a high quality game, but I rank it low because *I* never want to play it (Like the criteria says).

You're right... if the Cobra player sacrifices a snake to play a Bite card into an engine, it's played as though it were a Squeeze card, so the Cobra's special ability doesn't apply.

Thread: Cobras in the Cockpit - My humble and unwanted review

Ok, there has been enough said about this game that I wont be too verbose.
I especially liked Eli's very detailed review. (Hi Eli )

The game is fun, fast, and coherent.

FUN! - The theme is great, Snakes! Planes! Bad Mother F#$^%ers! What is there not to like? The artwork matches the concept and the setup and break down are both simple.

FAST! - The game play is designed to keep the game moving forward. The only time it slows down is when someone is unsure of what they want to do next. After a few games this shouldn't be an issue.

COHERENT! - The game makes sense. After the initial learning curve is traversed (as with any new game) you can focus on the strategies and tactics and see there is a lot more to this game then the initial love of biting, hissing at, rattling at, and squeezing wayward passengers.

I like this game.
It can be played under an hour which makes it a "Lunchable". (term for games played during lunch hour at work)
It doesn't take long to learn.
   It has replay-ability.
   Best of all, the price.

My recommendation: Buy it!

Thread: Did you know that they made a movie out of this too?

Well it's finally here. The first round of play with the full production version of "Cobras in the Cockpit". Knowing the designers I've been playing various version's of this for months now. Today was the big day. I bought my very own copy.

Ok, so we didn't play with my newly purchased copy. We did none the less play the final production version and I'd have to say it was an overall good experience.

As is my nature, I of course did not win. We were teaching the game to a new player. As is the nature of new players, she won. I was a close and fierce second though. I swear.

So, some details would probably be in order. This was the first time I'd had the opportunity to play pythons. I've played as rattle snakes and king snakes in the past, but never as the pythons. I'd have to say I like them best of the three thus far. Having not played cobras yet though I'll try and reserve judgment on the game as a whole.

For a brief time it actually appeared that I could win this time, but that moment was short lived. As are all my hopes and dreams....

Some cunning playing by my competitors resulted in big scores in the cockpit, twice. Sadly they also resulted in my snakes being thrown from the wing of our ill fated air craft only moments before what what should have been my single handed destruction of the number 1 engine.

Oh but I showed them. If I wasn't getting those points none would. I played the finishing card, throwing the last engine into chaos with a card robbing everyone (my self included) of points. If I wasn't getting them, no one would. I spiteful move on my part but I stand by it.

So in the end, I took second some 10 points behind our victor. None the less, much fun was had by all. I am quite happy to say that this further experience has given me no regrets in my purchase. A fun game, this is far more than a cheap movie tie in.

Ok, yeah, I know the designers and I'm probably not the most impartial person in the world on the subject of Cobras. But then again, I don't really like those guys much.

Thread: The Pub Players: Snakes in a Pub!

WARNING: The reviewer is a friend of the designer of this game, while I have attempted to not let this color my review, there can be little doubt that I had a desire to like this game. This is a standard Pub-Play review so the Pub environment will be taken into account. I am also basic this on a not-quite production quality version of the game (the deck of cards I have are not the production quality ones included in the release of the game, however the designer was nice enough to include a pack of card sleeves for me).

"I want these mutha-f*^$ing cobras out this mutha-f*^$ing cockpit!"

Cobras in the Cockpit is a game-parody of every action movie you've ever seen featuring snakes and planes. In this game you control the snakes moving them from section to section trying to throw the plane into chaos and assure its destruction.

Let's get to the meat (mmmm, roasted rattlesnake...) of this review.

Components: 3/10
For those of you looking for a fancy box to sit on your shelf, this game is not for you. It's self-published and comes in a plain white cardboard box with a color label affixed to the top, this can be a hassle if you, like me, store your games in a closet or some such with only the sides of the boxes visible. Inside are 5 cardstock 8.5"x11" game board segments (arranged in a "+" formation on the table to look like a plane), five pawns in each player color (20 total), 4 "species" cards to let you know about the different species of snakes and ten red plastic poker chips which are used to indicate which areas of the plan have been thrown into chaos. The core of the game however is the 99-card deck. While I can't comment on the cards, I did fear for this board in the pub, so much so that I placed my board segments inside document protectors (this worked out nicely). My cards were sleeved (a good idea for anyone mixing games and alcohol). The game looks as though, out of the package a good spill of a half-full or more beer could cause absolute ruin (don't get me started on red wine). The pawns are typical plastic pawns and are used to represent your snakes.

The deck of cards contains Spook cards (Hiss and Rattle) and Harm cards (bite and squeeze) number 1-9 in addition to many Special cards. The artwork on the cards is designed to look like the safety cards found in most airlines. This is evocative and humorous. The game's sense of humor permeates this game. At first I was worried that this may be along the lines of many cheapass games where once the joke runs out the game becomes stale. Fortunately this is not the case.

Rules & Gameplay: 8/10
For full rules you can visit the company's website, but here's a summary.

Players begin by selecting a species card at random and being dealt five cards. Each snake has different abilities, cobras, for example may play two bite or hiss cards in a single area but are unable to play rattle or squeeze cards, Pythons can play Squeeze Cards, Kingsnake players get "two for the price of one" on their snakes.

On a players turn they may take numerous actions, only limited by the number of cards in their hand, a player may discard a card to. Bring a snake from their stockpile into the plane's cargo hold or move a snake from one area to another. They may play an appropriate Harm or Spook card into an area or play a special card using the effect described on the card.

The object of the game is to earn points by throwing the different areas of the plane into chaos, this is done by playing a set number of Harm and Spook cards into an area (equal or exceeding the values for each printed on the board), once an area is "full" of harm and spook it is thrown into chaos and players score points for each snake they have in the area (or earn double points is they are the only ones with snakes in the area). You must have snakes in the area of the plane when it is thrown into chaos in order to score points (although you need not have contributed anything to it actually being thrown into chaos). Areas once thrown are marked with a chip and may not be scored again (exception: there is a special card which will revert an area to control, this card does not, however negate the points earned for the previous disruption).

Engines and the Cockpit are special areas, the cockpit itself cannot be "Chaos'd!" but the pilot and copilot are the targets in this area. The Engines are a special case. Only Squeeze cards can be played normally on the engines. However a snake may sacrifice itself in order to play any other type of numbered card into the engines instead, if this throws the engine into chaos you score points as though your sacrificed snake is still there.

At the end of your turn you draw back up to five cards.

The player who throws the last area into chaos receives ten bonus points.

The rules are clearly laid out and contain humorous sidebars. Each rule has been given a name, thus aiding in memory. The rules are simple taking only a two-page pamphlet to lay out in detail.

The gameplay is simple enough and the "discard for movement/spawn of snakes" makes it so you've never got a hand full of useless cards, getting your snakes on the plane and spread out over the areas is so important that often times I found myself discarding otherwise valuable special or numbered cards just to get into areas to score points.

The special cards are funny and effective, without being overpowered. I guess if one player was ganged up upon it could be a hassle, but many of the special cards, when played, end up in the hand of the person you played them on. This could give them a six or more card hand thus allowing them to discard and get back in the game easily, or it gives them plenty of ammunition to throw back at their attackers. I think this is an interesting mechanic that I'd like to see a little more of in "take that" style games. Some folks will go so far as to discard the card just to see it out of play for a while.

Sobriety Edge: 7/10
At it's heard Cobras in the Cockpit is an area control game and your strategy is important, sure special cards played by your opponent can easily disrupt your best laid plans, but there is still a definite strategic element, it is however, fairly simple and not harmed too much by excess consumption. The humor of the game just gets better as the pints go down.

Wotcha' Doin'?: 9/10
Given the cultural zeitgeist of the theme Cobras in the Cockpit does attract a lot of attention. I think it would more so if you replaced the plastic pawns with small plastic snakes (an idea for the second edition?). It's also simple enough to explain to the curious, and often times you can elicit a chuckle by having them read one of the special cards. I believe by this time next year the game will not elicit as much attention, unless a certain Bad Mutha-f*^$er signs for a sequel.

Sociability: 7/10
Cobras in the Cockpit really plays best with 3-4 players, I found the two player game a little lacking. There's also the humor component which is really upped by a larger group of people.

Summation:
Cobras in the Cockpit is a solid game, enhanced by its humor but based on sound mechanics. Balance is excellent, for a game with variable player powers it's handled quite well and I've not seen a trend with any particular snake species. The components are somewhat lackluster, but for a first game by a self-publisher I've definitely seen worse. the game is definitely fun and has good replayability (something usually lacking from games that seem to surround a central joke). I'm not sure if I'll bring this back to the pub, the five-piece board takes up a lot of space and if it were not for the document protectors and card sleeves I would have been quite paranoid throughout the evening.

Thread: Re: The Film of the Boardgame?

MonkeyMagic wrote:
Have a look at http://www.snakesonaplane.com

Is this the first case of a film (that means movie btw) based on a boardgame? It must be.

In the trailer I saw plenty snakes (including, I think, a cobra), I saw a cockpit and I even saw a Bad Mother F$%#@! (Sam L, who else?)

So glad I made my preorder as this will surely sell out now.

Nick, if you're expecting a gaming experience that's vicariously true to the spirit of the action sequences of the forthcoming "Snakes on a Plane" movie, you might wanna considering reining in your expectations as it's possible that you might be in for a bit of a disappointment in one respect of the game but possibly be for a delight in another.

Were you aware that the "Cobras in the Cockpit" game is apparently more of an area-control abstract-strategy game?

If you've noticed the artwork on the game company's website, the jet plane playing board has no depictions of seated passengers, stewardesses or pilots. I've learned from one of its game designers named Mac that the passengers, stewardess and pilots are only depicted on the playing cards. There apparently are not any passenger tokens to move around the board. Indeed, there are no depictions in literal terms of snake-token-versus-passenger-token game play, that is, snake tokens apparently don't literally attack passengers on the plane board itself. It doesn't have the literal "Zombies!!!" game appeal of 3-D re-enactments of snake-versus-passenger thrills. It's apparently more of an abstract-strategy area-control game with a snakes-on-a-plane theme tacked on.

However, although "Cobras in the Cockpit" may well succeed on its own merits as an abstract-strategy area-control game, something tells me that "Snakes on a Plane" fans aren't going to be expecting abstract-strategy mind candy as much as literal Hiss-Hiss-Bite-Bite action a la "Zombies!!", only with snakes versus passengers on a plane. If it turns out to be a good abstract-strategy game, then there might be a silver lining if "Cobras in the Cockpit" serves as a gateway game for the literal Hiss-Hiss-Bite-Bite fans to explore other abstract-strategy games.

However, as of this writing, I can at best only be cautiously optimistic as I've learned some things from Mac, one of its game designers, that makes me wonder if the game designers kept abreast or actually know anything about the actual production history of the "Snakes on a Plane" movie. Specically, I'm talking about the battle that actor Samuel L. Jackson had to fight with the snakey producers. When he heard that the producers of "Snakes on a Plane" were actually going to tone down the script from an R to a PG-13 rating, soften its snake-attack action sequences as well as change the name of the movie to something tamer and more prestigious sounding, Samuel L. Jackson rebelled and appealed to the Internet film fandom to urge the studio to quash those wrong-headed notions, and quash them they did! The studios and producers not only relented but also restored the original "Snakes on a Plane" concept back to its original ferocity.

Mac, one of the creators of the "Cobras in the Cockpit" game, seemed oblivious of this news story. Indeed, before I grasped that the "Cobras" game was more of an abstract-strategy game, when I asked him if players of his game would be able to maneuver their snake tokens to bite passengers and whether the bitten passengers would somehow be depicted in varying degrees of panic collapse (slumped over, fainted, sprawled in their seats, prone on the floor), Mac said he thought that concept was a bit too morbid. When I reminded him how "Zombies!!!" successfully and vicariously relived the thrills of George Romero's "Living Dead" movies with its own unique dark, edgy E.C. Comics style of morbid tone without being oppressive about it, Mac seemed unimpressed and turtled up about his own game. Again, it appears that the snakes' biting of passengers in "Cobras in the Cockpit" is more of an abstract game mechanism, not a literal visual-cinematic thrill.

Ironically, "Cobras in the Cockpit" may be more in line with the revisionist producers' nearly-realized-but-aborted softer-action/PG-13-rating version of "Snakes on a Plane" than the original-concept version which Samuel Jackson campaigned for and got filmed. However, the "Cobras" website certainly is hyping its "Cobras in the Cockpit" game as if it delivers a vicarious game experience of more literally-visualized snakes-attack-passenger thrills in the same dark-edgy spirit of the "Snakes on a Plane" movie than an abstract-strategy game experience with a snakes-attack-passengers theme tacked on.

In my opinion, the game designers should openly acknowledge their game as an abstract-strategy game with a tacked-on snakes-on-a-plane theme if it is indeed such but refrain from hyping it in ways that could easily mislead people to infer that it's more in line with the literal vicarious cinematic thrills of games like "Zombies!!!"

By the way, there are four species of snakes depicted in the game: Cobras, Pythons, Rattlesnakes and King Snakes. When I first read about the presence of King Snakes in the game, I wondered whether they served as the Snake Police because King Snakes are non-venomous beneficial snakes which prey on venomous snakes. As of this writing, Mac has yet to respond to my questions about this and other features of the game.

I guess we'll eventually learn the answers to these questions in the coming weeks. However, I do feel somewhat inspired a la Samuel L. Jackson to consider launching an Operation Mongoose informational campaign to encourage game buyers that when/if considering an impulse purchase of "Cobras in the Cockpit", they should not abandon either their sensibilities or healthy skepticism about over-hyped games from game companies with no track record. I would consider waiting until a representative sampling of reviews yielded some consensus as to whether the game was worth its price.

Therefore, that age-old saying still holds true -- "Caveat emptor" -- Let the Buyer beware.
