Thread: Re: parallel start line?

I've been running Circus Maximus races at gaming conventions since 1988 ... a couple of years in, we greatly streamlined the movement rules; partly because my friends and I had grown weary of explaining the "2 in, 1 out" lane change to newcomers, partly because the constant re-counting of moves due to confusion greatly slowed down big games (we often ran 14 and 16 chariot races back then.)

Changing lanes in our Streamlined edition is a simple move diagonally to the left or right, costing 1 mp. Since there was now no 'penalty' for moving to the inside, there was no longer a need for a staggered start. All chariots begin on a single start line in the first straightaway.

We found that there is little to no difference in the way the field developes during the race: The safe-operating-speeds in the corner lanes still act as the 'control rod' for determining which part of the track a player favors.

Most of the chariots I use come from Viking Forge, specifically the Greek Successor State ones -- even though it's not historically Roman, it looks like the chariots you see in most movies (esp. Ben Hur), comes with 4 horses, has a great guy with a whip and is only $4.

http://vikingforge.datasquire.net/MCC-12%20Successor%20Chari...

Viking forge also has chariots from other periods that could be adopted for light or heavies.

http://vikingforge.datasquire.net/

Open it up! Get 3+ friends together and have at it.

I have somewhat limited experience with the game, but I recommend that you give everyone the same size chariot and generally the same stats. at least the first few times, this keeps everyone pretty close together. It didn't take us long to get into the swing of things. This is one of the easier AH games.

If I had one complaint about it, it would be that sometimes you roll 2d6 and other times you roll 3d6, it would be nice if they had just made it a little more consistent. But that is a nit pick really.

Thanks for the session report. I have a copy of Circus still in the shrink, and I've been debating whether to open it up.

I think I might have to. A good horse-whipping and ramming game is too much fun to leave unplayed.

Thread: Chariots make a good side dish

Work has been conspiring against our weekly roleplaying nights, so it has been a long time since we played our Runebearer game. I finally made it over to S and K's house tonight and had a great meal and fun hanging out and talking. K was pretty tired and so we opted not to scour the rats out of a cobrat crystal cave, and instead we played a game of Circus Maximus.

Circus Maximus is a fun chariot racing game published by Avalon hill. The rules are pretty light, but there is a fair amount of reading and dice rolling involved in resolving things. There is also a lot of information to track for each chariot compared to modern games. With the little record sheets this never feels overwhelming to me anyway.

S and I talked K into playing, though she was tired. We each took two chariots. Play started slowly as we haven't played this since January. It took a while of looking up rules before we got into the swing of things with resolving attacks and your options.

My first attack with my Red chariot resulted in a whip grab, loosing his whip in the second turn! Brutal. At that point I decided that Red would go on a rampage of ramming other chariots. Given that he had a relatively fast movement I'm not sure that this was the best tactic but it was fun.

We kept a tight pack through the first lap. Nobody getting into major trouble. Eventually K got tired enough to head to bed, so S and I split up her chariots.

I was keeping team Red on the inside tracks to keep up with the others who were still able to whip their beasts and this resulted in a flip taking it out of the game.

The high point for me was a brutal horse killing against S with a strong roll. Killing the horse basically took one of S's teams out of the race and it never recovered.

We ended up racing only two laps, with S pulling ahead with two chariots. I then finished my two, and the dead horse cart bringing up the rear, so I got beaten pretty soundly.

Many of these Avalon hill games have lots of charts, but also an optimal solution to what you should be doing in any given turn. This game doesn't suffer from that, you are given plenty of options that have viable outcomes which keeps it interesting. Do you whip your beasts? Do you attempt a ram? Do you go into the corner fast to make up some time? Each choice has the potential to have a devastating success or failure, but you can generally predict what is going to happen. There is just enough chaos and action built into the rules to keep things exciting while not being completely arbitrary.

Since we only raced two laps we ended with a lot of extra endurance. In our post mortem of the game we decided that two laps was a good choice for times sake but we would want to cut the endurance by a third. We also talked about starting the wheel damage at 2 on a short two lap race. Someday I would like to play this with 4 or more players. Having more people to attack definitely make the game more fun.

This is a fun little game, I would probably pick a copy of it if I saw one around someday.

Thread: Re: Minis available in US?

I'm using some Peter Pig minis for my set as well as some Xyston. All the chariot sets I'm using are 4 horses sets. The Peter Pig ones are a bit smallish compared to the Xystons but those are the light chariots. The Peter Pig Chariots (light) are Range 3 pack 54 and were list priced about $5.35 each.

For the medium Chariots I am using the Xyston Indian Chariots--you have a choice of Indian Gernerals chariot w/four crew (ANC 20101) or Indian Four-Horsed Chariot w/four crew (ANC 20100)--the only difference was the general's had some extra's that you would not use like the parasols. The reason I got both was I wanted to have at least 4 medium chariots in my set. The list price on either is $7.95 each.

For the heavy Chariots I am using the Xyston Persian General in Four-horsed Chariot (ANC 20083). The list price on this is also $7.95 each.

Now, before you have a heart attack at the price of the lead, Brookhurst Hobbies at that time gave a 25% off discount. So, for the 7 light Peter Pigs, the 4 medium Indian Xystons, the 3 heavy Persian Xystons and with a $5 off Gamex coupon it all came out to total $79.94. Yes a substantial investment in lead, but a darn good summer project that will also be a fun game to run at the Strategicons.

BTW: I just finished painting the horses and chariots--will post pics soon. I am about ready to start on the board--going to try using marker/fabric paint on canvas so I can roll up the board for easy storage. Last will be the drivers. I still also need to make wreck debris--thinking I might mold my own out of Fimo or some other medium, suggestions are appreciated.

Thread: Re: Yet, a couple more questions about attacking, and braking

Sorry, as good an idea that sounds; the answer is no, as per rule 6.62 on page 5; A chariot cannot brake to avoid attack if another team or obstacle is in the square directly behind it. Your best bet would be to evade if possible as long as you have the room to move sideways and not against a wall.

Hope this helps.

Jim

and what happens when you are being attacked, and you have another chariot just behind you? Can you brake, and the chariot behind you receives an involuntary ram attack?; or you cannot brake and you have to hold on or evade?

Thread: Re: parallel start line?

It is a little strange but I think its the cost of making an inside lane change in a corner spread out over the entire race track.

I have figured out what you are saying though. The cost for an lane 1 to move out and get into position to attack lane 8 is 7MF. Reversing it, the cost is 12MF to get into lane 2 but the lane 1 chariot also has to move forward 12MF so the cost differential is 0MF.

Personally this doesn't bother me but your 2nd suggestion is a good one. Start in parellel, I would modify the inside lane change to 1MF for the first straightaway only. After turn 1 back to normal rules.

Thread: Re: parallel start line?

Yes kevin is right about this one.A move to the outside cost 1 movement factor but you actually move one space forward and then move one space to the right so you are actually moving 2 spaces but it only cost one movement.A lane change to the inside is 1 space forward and then one space to the left but this cost 2 movement factors. So even if a light chariot starts in lane 1 and you have a heavy in lane 8 you would have just as hard of a time catching the light chariot.

Either you don't quite have the rules right or I'm not following what the perceived problem is.

A lane change to the outside is exactly the same cost as a straight ahead move, 1MF spent, 1 space forward. Only an inside lane change costs 2MF.

Granted, if you're a slow chariot you probably don't want to move to the outside lanes but it is supposed to be a race game with some combat thrown in, not the other way around.
I recommend that you download and print the counters that Ray made. They are very nice. I made my own counters and I think they are better looking AND easier to use than the "original flat" ones. Mine stand up, and are easy to grab and move. Take a look at them here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/317625
and here: http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/317621

As for the color counters, you can use pieces of paper with the color name on it. Those are used for selecting who's turn it is.

Jim

Thread: parallel start line?

What a nice funny game! I enjoy very much driving my heavy chariot agains my frightened colleagues. But, alas, when my start line is nr.1 there is little I can do to reach the fast light chariots that start in the outer lines. In my opinion, the chariot starting in lane-8 has quite an advantage in front of the line-1 one. In lane-8 you have the choice to choose among going straight ahead (specially with fast chariots) or looking for inner lanes, if you have slower-heavier chariots. You have not such option starting in lane-1, if you move to the most outer line you lose 7 squares.

To avoid this imbalance I suggest 2 variants:

1st. To force all the chariots to go by line 1 at least once during the race. Easy, but little realistic.

2nd. (which I prefer) Starting in parallel with line 8, like in Ben-Hur (or the Phantom Menace ). Then, the cost to change to inner lanes going straight would be 1 MF, instead of 2 (in curves would be still 2 MF). The start would be for sure more exciting, and all chariots have the same chance to choose where to go by.

Finding direct replacements may be very difficult for a game this long out of print.

One Idea would be to ask if anyone has an upunched copy that they could scan the counters at a high resolution and send you the file then you could print them out on cardstock or on labels and apply them to foamboard.

On BGG there already is a file of some homemade counters that can be found at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/30733

Another idea would be to look at what some of the folks on this site have done using miniatures and other accessories to spruce up the game and maybe do something along those lines.

I no longer have a copy of Circus Maximus so I cannot help you with the scan.

Best of luck.

Thread: Re: Yet, a couple more questions about attacking, and braking

Question 1: No. You cannot pay a movement cost for an attack and then go back one space. If another chariot is 17 spaces in front you need 18 movements to pull along side of it and attack it(17 for movement 1 for the attack).

Question 2: yes you can brake as often as you want in a turn but in the situation you describe above you would not have to because an opposing chariot cannot make 2 attacks from the same space(as per the rules). So if you were successful in braking the first attack and putting your horses next to your opponnent he would not be allowed to attack them from the same space anyway.
Thread: Yet, a couple more questions about attacking, and braking

Question #1: When a chariot ends his movement exactly NEXT to an opponents chariot, are you able to attack the car/driver? I ask this because, when you make an attack, you MUST lose ONE Movement Factor for an attack, and this would actually back up your chariot car behind the opponent. Or would this be considered, you pull up along side him, ATTACK him, and THEN -1 MF?

Question #2: Are you able to BRAKE TWICE in a turn? EXAMPLE: An opponent pulls next to you and ends his turn EXACTLY even with you (as mentioned above), and announces, I am attacking you. So, to avoid an attack (not being able to change lanes) you decide to BRAKE, HOWEVER, by only braking ONE "square" your horses are still next to the opponents driver, which would allow him to NOW attack the horse team. So, can you BRAKE again to avoid this as well?? Each time deducting the endurance points for braking...

I realize that these two questions are almost the same...

Jim

Thread: Re: Dead horses and speed?

Per Rule 9.51, you lose 1 speed point for each point of damage a horse takes, applied immediately. If this reduces the team speed below the planned turn speed, the planned speed is also reduced. In your scenario, the horse took 4 damage points in the process of being killed, and thus the team speed is straightaway reduced to 10.

Thread: Dead horses and speed?

We had a question about dead horses during our first play (First game play yesterday and it was great!!)... Here is what happened:

Before moving on turn 11, the blue teams right horse was killed off. Originally it had a team speed of 4334, and it was written down that in the next turn he was going to move 14 spaces. BUT, before he was able to move, the right (#4) horse was killed. So now on the Blue teams next turn comes the part where you need to attempt to cut the dead horse loose, BUT (here is the question) BEFORE you attempt to cut your dead horse loose, do you CHANGE your team speed to a 10? OR, do you leave it alone at 14 for THIS turn PLUS (If you don't succeed in cutting it loose) any additional turns that may be needed to cut the dead horse loose? Then, after it has been cut loose, I realize on your NEXT "full" turn, you must change your MAXIMUM speed to a 10.

Jim

Thread: Re: Side-slip OR Corner lane change?

Sure, a couple examples.

There's the great friend making tactics of stopping directly in front of someone. Again since the forward movement of a lane change is first, you can move directly in front of another chariot, if its your last movement point and they haven't moved yet (or move before you next round) then they have to sideslip.

As to seeing the blocking before it happens, yes most of the time you will want to avoid it, but sometimes you won't want to make your full movement (approaching a corner too fast, don't want to pass a heavy chariot just yet, etc...) So you move into a blocked situation, force yourself to sideslip and "brake" 3MF for free instead of spending endurance.

And its also possible, especially in the corners, that you can't avoid the situation because other chariots are blocking your lane change and/or you don't want to make an inside change.
A side slip is directly sideways.
A lane change is forward and then sideways.
So if there is chariot directly in front of you, then you can't make a normal lane change as the forward part comes first, you would have to sideslip or brake.

The 8,9,10 are for the campaign game.

Thread: Side-slip OR Corner lane change?

What is the difference between the Sideslip and the Corner Lane Change? I am reading the rules through to start playing for the first time, but when I got to 6.7 it says that the Sideslip can be used if called for on a chart, OR if all other means of movement are blocked... So... why not use a lane change which is 1 MF (to the outside); rather than using 3 MF? Not sure if I grasp this part yet... Unless I missed the whole thing...

Also, when filling out the LOG sheet in the begining before game play, I have a question...

For example.... I use TWO PREP points for Team Speed bringing it to a FAST speed. Then, I Roll the dice for the "TEAM SPEED" using a 2 in the catagory line, and I roll a 4 giving me a 7436 for speed. OK, now... here is my question, WHAT are the numbers 8 thru 10 for? IF the highest number on the chart is a 7, then, how do you move your team speed up into the 8,9, or 10 numbers? (Could that be for the "advanced" games? I still have not read that far yet)

Thanks!

Jim

To flatten the boards simply put some heavy books on them and let them sit a few days. I've did that using the phone book once for a board that was warped and it worked pretty good.

Hmmm. When I used to collect postage stamps as a kid, I was taught (wrongly for value purposes) to steam off stamps from envelopes.

I have never tried that with a map board, but it is just glossy paper glued to a cardboard backing.

Another way to approach it - scan the thing in color and print it out and paste it to a different substrate.

If you think it can be de-warped (in the oven, on very low heat, on a cookie sheet, pressed by another cookie sheet with bricks on top) and the material is in not too badly warped, re adhere the separated bit with some brushed on Elmer's Glue or Mod Podge.

Light warpage might be corrected by just letting it be pressed under weights for a week or so.

Just some ideas, none tried.

Scan it first. Any of the above physical solutions risk total destruction.

--------------

Now how would you steam it off? I think a slightly wet paper towel under a map board in a microwave might do the trick.

Thread: Warped Boards

I picked up a copy of this game at a local thrift shop for a whopping 0.50¢!! Unfortunately it wasn't stored very well and the box looks like it may have gotten damp. The map boards are a set of 3 double folding boards. Unfortunately they are warped and the pictures are starting to peel off. Does any one know a way to safely and easily remove the picture from the cardboard backing? Or is there a way to flatten the boards so I can re-glue the pictures?

I have never tried to repair a game board before so any info will be appreciated.
