I totally agree.
I discovered Heroscape with the release of the Marvel edition, and have since gone on to fill out my collection. It is indeed and excellent father-son game, and I really like the scenarios in the Marvel set.

Nice reporting, but just play Heroscape for 250 points, that is a fast game, we usually play where the loser picks a team to try and take on the winner, no wasted time drafting.

Thread: A great father-son or filler game, bur don't pay full price!

As a big gaming geek returning to the hobby after a nearly 12-year hiatus, I'm always on the lookout for games with fun themes I can play with my 8-year old son.

Battle Cattle fits the bill perfectly.

I've also used it (with success) as a filler game as we wait for other player to arrive for more serious games.

With me, theme and presentation are as important as mechanics, and I love the idea—heavily armored bovines armed to the teeth and engaged in a duel to the death. And the art is pretty good as well.

Every cow is exactly the same, so there's no strategy at all in picking your cow, but the names and art give them unique personalities.

The game is based on the simplest "draw a card, play a card" mechanic but it works for the game and keeps it moving quickly.

It's a great little game when you want to play a "war" game, and you don't have time for HeroScape or Risk 2210.

It plays in as little as 10 minutes, and my son has no problem playing multiple games in a row without getting bored.

I view it as a great transition game to start luring him away from video games and into the old-school boardgames I love.

What I can't beleive, is that it retails at $25!!
That's insane. It's six full-color cardstock cows and a deck of cards—that's it!

I picked mine up off ebay for $7, not realizing what a grat deal it was until later.

I would highly recommend this as a game to play with your kids or as a silly filler game, but don't pay more than $10-12. There's just not enough there to justify the cost.

Thread: Battle Cattle: The Card Game

Battle Cattle is a card game about heavily armed and armored bovines battling to be the last cow standing. The theme is meant to be wacky and fun, and it is, especially when you get to play characters with names like “Cowzilla the Hun” or the “Texas Tornado.” This is not a game of deep strategy because the luck of the draw will be a big determining factor in how much destruction you can wreak and how well you can avoid that same destruction.

In the game you get a deck of cards, six player cards (cow cards), to keep track of damage scored against you and a set of instructions. The players’ cards have different names and artwork but each is basically the same. In the deck of cards there are three different types: attack cards, armor cards and special cards. The attack cards do just that, they attack and try to cause damage and they are, for the most part, location specific. That is, when you do a machine gun blast, it is either to the front, back, left or right side of your opponent. The armor cards, which can absorb damage from an attack, are also location specific and can only be played at the time of an attack. The cows already have some armor but the armor cards are very helpful in keeping a side from being breached and damage going on through to the body. A cow is destroyed if its five points of body is wiped out. The special cards have various other attacks and defenses, such as the “T-Bone” which is an attempt to ram another cow, or the “Mooo-ve and Skid”, which is a defense to being rammed. Some special cards are played on a players turn and others can be played at any time or only in response to another card.

The game play is fast, which is just right for a light, wacky game. Your turn consists of drawing cards to bring your hand up to six cards and then taking one of three possible actions: play an attack card, play a special card, or if you don’t do either of the first two you must discard one or more cards. If you run out of cards to draw from you just shuffle the discards and keep going until there is only one cow left, the winner of that round.

A real full game is played for points, sixty points being the winning number. You get twenty points for being the last cow still moooving, and ten points for every cow you put the finishing shot into. There is also an escape maneuver, which doesn’t win you the round but keeps somebody from making ten points on your demise.

Once again this is not a game filled with strategic and tactical decisions any more complicated than concentrating firepower on your opponents weaker side or desperately discarding cards in the hope of getting something to save yourself with. With the right people though, in the right frame of mind, this game is fast and furious fun.
Thread: Session Report

We decided to play a lighter filler game after this. So I pulled out Battle Cattle. We all grabbed a cow (I wish that some of the cows had different characteristics, but they all were the same - just different artwork.)

Then, we started throwing cards at each other. The game reminds me a lot of Family Business. There's not a lot of strategy in the game, just throw an attack card at someone which targets a certain part of their cow, and hope they don't have a defensive card to block you.

Not very mind-boggling, but very fun. My cow was the first to get blasted to cow hamburger, and then Ryan. It came down to a duel between Sam and Clayton, and Clayton squeaked out the victory.

We all enjoyed it, but it was time for something else...
