In my opinion, one of the great aspects of learning the rules in AT-43 Damocles, is playing the missions in order. I recommend you do this.

I'd start with Scenario 1, just so you can enjoy the build up and learn the rules piecemeal while following the fluff. Enjoy!

Thread: Starting Out

I have the Operation Damocles box plus the rulebook and the first 2 accessory expansions.

A friend and I are going to give the game a try tomorrow. Neither of us have played, I have been reading the rules. We are both wargamers (hex & counter and miniatures). Should we start with scenario 1 in the Damocles rulebook and work our way through or should we start at scenario 6?

Thanks.

PS You may see this crossposted on the AT-43 forums and BGG as I am not sure what forum will provide the most feedback, but no need to answer in all 3 places.

What I meant to be clear on, was that we don't use, at present, the clan versions of the standard platoon formation.

The game's interesting enough without special powers and disadvantages poured on top of the mix of miniatures we have. I suppose that time will gnaw down on my interest in AT-43, and then clans can be brought out into daylight to mix it all up again.

Well, that's how we play...

Mark,

I am a little confused, if you use the "standard" platoon pattern you aren't allowed the advantages/disadvantages of the 3 sub clan choices??

I have had a look for example at the UNA army lists, they are almost all 3 inf units and 2 vehicle units with only subtle differences.

I just don't understand.
Each army list begins with what appears to be a generic platoon pattern which I assume no one ever uses? Then there is one platoon pattern for each of the 3 sub clans. I presume these are ALWAYS used as it says these are the only ones that allow the clan advantage and disadvantage.

Not true. We prefer playing with the standard platoon formations.

· Infantry – obvious (I think)
· Strider - obvious (I think)
· Soldiers - I think this means infantry and not fire toads/golgoths
· AFV - I assume this currently means fire toads/golgoths
· Vehicle - Again I assume currently this means fire toads/golgoths, there are not currently any tracked or wheeled vehicles in the game
· Support unit - I believe these don’t exist in the Damocles campaign? I have heard comments that imply mobile support units may be included within frostbite? I don’t think anyone has static support units yet in the game

Infantry and soldiers are the same.
AFV/Vehicle/Striders are the same - in game terms.
Support - I haven't seen one yet. I don't think one's been released.

Red Blok: emphasize to him he will want anti-tank weapons. I've fought the Red Blok a lot and combat striders tend to give them difficulties as they often don't have enough weaponry capable of knocking them out! Dragonov Kommandos are very nice and carry some excellent special weapons with their sniper rifles and AT gauss guns. I definitely recommend picking them up early if building Red Blok.

The Kolossus battlesuits look impressive but are pretty slow and can have difficulty getting into weapon range - particularly the flamethrower model. The RPG model is probably the best of the three, but it's not as impressive as UNA TacArms or Therian Bane Goliaths for anti-tank work.

Odin-01 and Manon-02 are extremely irritating thanks to their repair ability and the one-two punch of Urod's AT cannon and medium rocket launcher cannot be underestimated.

Therians: Bane Goliaths are very solid and give you a lot of AT firepower since there are overseers which will let you use a routine to reroll penetrations.

Assault Golems are a good all-around infantry unit thanks to their nucleus rifles and nucleus gun special weapons.

Tiamat is very powerful but can have the same effect on play as a Type III strider - because she can spit out Hekats and vaporize other overseers to stay alive, the game can really become about her...

Hope that helps!

Braver than me.

I only play for fun, don't like competitions, I do get the impression this game attracts more players who are interested in fun than winning at all costs, than say WH40K does.
Thread: Question about platoon patterns

Hi guys,

I am looking at getting AT-43. I am getting a little confused about the army lists and would appreciate a little guidance. Allow me to explain.

I have purchased the full rule book plus UNA and Therian army list books. The army structure seems to be a rather clever “Platoon pattern” idea. My problem is on some of the wording. I have noticed

“Soldiers, infantry, strider, armoured fighting vehicle, vehicle, support unit” are all terms used in some cases apparently interchangeably. Could anyone clarify them please? This is my current best guess.

Each army list begins with what appears to be a generic platoon pattern which I assume no one ever uses? Then there is one platoon pattern for each of the 3 sub clans. I presume these are ALWAYS used as it says these are the only ones that allow the clan advantage and disadvantage.

I am currently only interested in Therians and UNA, so don’t worry about any complications added by terminology to describe Karman vehicles for example.

All advice gratefully appreciated

Andy
Thread: Re: Advice on which units to buy?

Peter,

With any luck it will be me playing the Therians!

Actually I suspect I will end up with Therians and UNA, I think my friend wants red blok. With a few damocles box sets I will probably be able to build UNA AND Therians for less than it is going to cost him for the Red Blok.

Agreed though that for UNA steel trooper attachment boxes are essential, probably won't get much more than that. For Therians I will probably get equivalent heavy weapon attachment box to the basic troopers in the damocles set. I also love those level 3 inf, spidery goliath things, tank killers as I remember.

I wouldn't look to me for good lists!! My aim is fun rather than tournament play so will try and stay away from all heroes if I can (as long as my friend agrees).

Andy
Thread: Re: Advice on which units to buy?

Fire Toads and Steel Troopers are always good things to build on for the UNA...

IMO the main strengths for the UNA are laser guns and being able to field groups of type one Striders. So my first recommendation would be some Steel Trooper Attachment packs so you can have laser guns instead of missile launchers.

Steel Tac Arms are another great tool in the UNA arsenal - six laser guns will put the hurt on most AFVs and they are fairly well priced at 300 points plus the sergeant.

Finally, if you're looking to upgrade on the Strider front, go for the Copperhead boxed set with Col. Stark. A Cobra with a mortar and missile launcher is a pretty good counter to both dug-in infantry and the heavier enemy AFVs.

I would recommend staying away from Type 3 AFVs for both players until you get more familiar with the game. They are a lot of points in a single unit and will end up being a pain to field unless you really ratchet up the points.

Do play scenarios with objectives rather than straight up "wipe each other out" fights, particularly if your friend is using the Therians. The Therians are underpriced if you jettison the objectives system due to their routines.

Hi there,

Thanks for the input.

I had intended to go to a big show pick up the full rules book, army lists and the models there. Problem with this great plan of course is i have to effectively buy the models first THEN read the army lists.

Using my great mind I have managed to spot the problem with this approach

I have found a local store who has the rules and army lists in stock, I will pick them up tomorrow, and then I can come to a sensible decision as to what to get.

I have noticed that steel trooper add on packs are in short supply. Looks like maybe they will re release them in snow camo. Personally I don't like the snow camo models at all. I will stick with basic Damocles models.

Ta

Andy
Andy -

Since your Initiation sets actually come with steel troopers, I would definitely recommend trying to get the attachment boxes for those. Trouble is, I'm fairly certain those are on backorder pretty much everywhere - I don't think FFG has any more in stock. Ebay will probably be your best bet. Personally, I'd stick with steel squads over star squads because of the weaponry on the steels.

Star troopers are your lead-throwers. Good for cheap and expendable soldiers, a box of the base unit and a box of the attachment will probably be useful. You'll have better luck getting these attachment boxes, and still get the specialists to flesh out your star squads.

Type 3 UNA soldiers are also a good addition to your force - I'd stick with either the Steel TacArms (lasers are good vs armor and infantry alike) or the Death Dealers (heavy MG can lay waste to unarmored troops). The Jammers are only good against vehicles, and I haven't used the Shock TacArms to much effectiveness. Also, throwing the laser designator add-on to the TacArms keeps your missile launchers out of harm's way, at least for a little bit.

As for the Therians, you have the golems: assault (longer range nucleus guns+melee), grim (pure melee), and storm (shorter range sonic guns+melee). Grim golems with Atis (a hero) attached are great for teleporting into close combat, especially if the close combat includes some juicy, aforementioned missile launchers.

The Type 3's you're referring to are the goliaths - both are good, although I seem to favor the Banes for their heavier weapons.

If you have the Army books, you can build according to any of the 4 (I count the base template as one). It just depends on your mission and on your opposing force.

Hope this helps.

E
Thread: Advice on which units to buy?

Guys,

Can you give me a little advice please. A friend and I are considering getting into AT-43. I am planning to get 3 copies of the Damocles set cheaply, this will give us 3 level 1 walkers and tons of basic infantry. What I wanted to check with you guys was what else should we buy.

Our idea is to keep it down to “Sensible” troops. As such we were considering imposing our own artifical limits (as we will only be playing each other and a couple of other guys at the club). Basically limiting ourselves to just the 3 walkers we get in the box sets, and maybe allowing purchase of either any type 1 or 2 infantry or maybe any type 3 infantry. This gives us interesting flexible armies, but avoids the silly overpowered one offs so beloved of WH40k. I am sure a size 5 walker is cool, but it could unbalance the rest of the game. We are looking for well balanced enjoyable fun games, not a tournament winning cheesy army.

Assuming you understand what we are trying to achieve, what should we be going for? So on the UNA side should I be buying star troopers “attachment packs” to give me extra heavy weapons, or should I be buying steel warriors and heavy weapons. As we effectively have so many star warriors free in the 3 sets I suspect the star warrior attachment packs make more sense?

On the Therian side I am more confused, can’t work out what the relationship between each of the infantry types are? What do you reckon? I do like the look of those therian type 3 infantry on little spider legs, really cool J

Are you limited to specific troops dependant on which sub class you take? On the Therians I suspect we will be using “warrior”. Not sure about the UNA one.

Although I have tried to put forward our current ideas to give you some idea what we are looking for, we have not bought anything yet, and may be persuaded to totally change our plans…. Over to you…..

Andy

(Sort of like the Avalon Hill of today really isn't the same as old AH which died)

As far as buying the game. Look at what is available right now. If you think that looks interesting enough to be worthwhile, by all means. Hop in.

If you look at it and go "that looks kind of interesting, and as it expands looks like it could be really cool" then maybe holding off is possibly the better choice.

Even if Rackham completely collapses and new miniatures for the four factions stop, or if "The Cogs" are never released, I will still be content. We already have a superb range of sci-fi models/vehicles and a ace combat system to back it up. I will just utilise what I already have, fond memories of an eccentric French company occasionally popping into my brain.

Obviously I will be a saddened if Rackham fails to pull itself around. I'm just saying I won't suddenly forget AT-43.

PS. I'll just have to scour eBay looking for the prototype "Cogs" that'll be sure to surface eventually.

That is interesting news (the FFG Minis game of Dust), if that is true then it would explain a need for them to get rid of the AT-43 and Confrontation lines, less competition. It was a pain in the arse to get the AT-43 and Confrontation stuff before FFG was distributing it though, so I imagine it will be tough again to find people who are able to carry it at a decent price.

Where did you read info on the Dust Minis game?

D.

But also they are readying to release a miniatures games for DUST which is said to play much like AT-43.

Can anyone shed some light on both of these 2 questions?

Thanks;

I've have a general NDA with FFG and don't want to get into trouble. Besides Chris is a friend.

What I can say is that before FFG became involved with Rackham, Rackham had a very poor track record with distribution.

There was a 4-5 month period where nobody could get a copy of the main rules nor the Therian book. The Storm Golem attachment box, which was the only source of an Overseer model at the time, was also unavailable.

As a Therian player who missed getting the books during the first print run, I remember the days of having to borrow my friend's main rule book just play build my army. Even then, only a subset of the Therian units were included in the appendix. The lack of an the attachment box was fustrating as well as I didn't have a company commander.

The Red Block releases started 2 to 3 months before the Red Block book came out meaning that there were few sales and those that did buy them could not use them.

During FFG's tenure, all of the books remained in-stock and the Karmam book was released before the miniatures. Many of the core models also remained in-stock. Those that are out-of-stock, such at the Steel Troop Attachment Box (5 months and counting), are because Rackham chose not to republish.

Rackham did not suddenly get better at publishing. Guess where FFG had to focus all of its efforts? Here is a hint: It wasn't OP.

I find JB's claim that Rackham will now be releasing stuff on-time and monthly to be laughable.

Mike Z
Been a bit of the old farce this AT-43 business from the start. I can only speak from my own experience, but I bought the starter set, all keen to get into it, and then was unimpressed by the first packs (expensive, rough paint jobs not as good as the starter, obvious mould lines) and then turned off by the obvious distribution problems. So I put off getting into it some more. Then FFG start to distribute it, and I started thinking about it again ... now this happens, and I'm off it again.

Badly marketed and handled from the start I think, though I'm sure many people haven't had any problems.
