Thread: Get Sane Variant -- steal this idea!

I was fiddling around with this idea. It needs work, and if someone is inspired by this idea, please swipe it and develop it further.

Intro
You're insane! You see these monsters everywhere and it is not healthy. Your psychiratrist wants you to confront your demons and fight them off to help you get sane.

Rules
You start at Level 10 (Insane). As you defeat monsters you recover a bit of your sanity and your level of insanity goes down. You win if you can get your insanity down to 1 (sane). Whenever you amass 1000 "gold" worth of "items" your psychiatrist has told you you must sell them both to pay him and to rid yourself of these unhealthy icons. Selling items improves your sanity.

Running away from the Monsters (figments of your imagination) is the same as the normal rules. Getting help to defeat Monsters is also the same (good for you -- join a support group).

If Monsters "kill" you, you lose sanity again -- because you believe in monsters and you let them defeat you. If you lose more sanity than you have to lose, you lose your hand, your stuff and you wake up next turn, fresh out of the asylum with 2 new cards from either deck (same as normal rules).

Sanity Level
10 (insane)
9 (certifiable)
8 (barmy)
7 (nutter)
6 (odd)
5 (strange)
4 (jittery)
3 (eccentric)
2 (nervous)
1 (about as sane as the rest of us)

Player's Notes
I've tried this a couple of times solo, and while the game takes off well -- since your level is high at the beginning -- as you "gain" levels (of sanity), you really need to get stuff.

Please try this and tell me what you think. Additions appreciated.

You know, looking at it, I think what we played was Munchkin Cthulhu with both expansions. Maybe that didn't help...greater number of cards means greater chance of unbalanced card draw.

I have played this a couple of times, and the longest game was 2 hours. I prefer it to the others (I have Munchkin as well), and I find this to be a faster game.

One guy I know feels that the game should take awhile, because it is the journey (for him) that matters.

Haven't played it yet, but by just looking through the cards, I didn't find it to be too funny, either. The by far best genre still is the fantasy Munchkin, in my opinion. Followed perhaps by Munchkin Bites and Munchkin Impossible.

Thread: Ooookay. -oth.

I played this last weekend--my first experience with Munchkin. It took not two but three hours. At the end, the other four players were all at level nine and at least two of them were threatening to throw the game to each other just so it would be over.

Granted, it's clever that if you "kick open the door" and don't draw a monster, you get to "loot the room" to get another door card--it gives you a second chance to get a monster, and if you do, you can "look for trouble" next turn. On the other tentacle, it means that if you keep drawing non-monsters for both cards, you pretty much don't get any treasure cards. I think the number of items I got in the course of the game was three or maybe four, and one of those was a gift.

I think maybe two or three of the cards got an actual laugh. "Tumescent" was one of them. People were like "What's reptile dysfunction, Daddy?" "It means your lizard is broken." Good times.

Despite all that, I find myself feeling disinclined to play this again.

Thread: Oh, the pun-ishment!

Its about this point in the review where you would be assaulted with a host of inane and childish puns combined with obscure references to 1930's literature intended to simultaneously amuse the reader and pay tribute to this most storied of game lines. I submit, dear reader, that I have too much respect for you and your most delicate of sensibilities. No, we will have none of that nun-sense as we explore the thing on the doorstep: Munchkin Cthulhu.

The Bits
First and foremost, let's keep in mind, this is a Munchkin game. If you came looking for exciting bits and miniature Cthulhus devouring innocent meeples, you have made a terrible mistake. Instead, we are presented with a small box, two decks of cards with no way to keep them separate, a bi-fold rules booklet and one six-sided die. On one hand, I have the lurking fear that this lack of something special takes away from the game a bit, leaving many of my Cthulhu-craving compatriots to search the box for some unholy miniature or piece of unearthed Lovecraftian fiction.

Gameplay
At the end of the day, this is more Munchkin. The unnameable truth of the matter is that if you love Munchkin, prepare to be entertained. Otherwise, flee. Now. Seriously...I'll wait.

Are they gone? Good. For those who haven't experienced the Munchkin series before, a brief intro is in order. Players take the role of new adventurers seeking to advance to become the very old men of legend by attaining level 10. Levels are gained by defeating monsters, selling loot and playing special cards. Monsters are defeated by using accumulated treasure and new character classes to raise your effective level beyond that of your misbegotten antagonists. Monsters are found by opening a door (flipping a card on your turn). Got it? Good. The only thing stopping this from being the world's most boring game of D&D is the plethora of cards designed to allow one player to royally screw another through curses and even dropping or improving monsters that their opponents can't handle (and then offering to help them beat said monster in exchange for a share of the loot!). Munchkin Cthulhu does introduce one blast of cool air in the form of a new character class: Cultist. The cultist class is a very difficult to change character class that represents the corruption of the players by the other gods. If all the players become cultists the game ends early. As one can expect, several of the new character classes in the game are geared specifically towards interacting with these new cultists (as well as several of the event/curse cards). One other rule is that some monsters (the “goths”) allow for the summoning of other goths.

So what does this game offer above and beyond the old-fashioned Munchkin that you know and love? Not a whole lot at the end of the day. Don't get me wrong, as Munchkin games go, this one is pretty good. Unfortunately, the formula isn't particularly different with the addition of the new character classes and all of the old bugs that can slow down earlier games remain in this version of the game. Also, the Lovecraft references used on the cards can be pretty obscure*, with even my most scholarly friends summoning dread Azathoth (and S.T. Joshi!) for clarification.

End Game
Like most Muchkin games, any apparent winner quickly becomes the outsider, with every other player throwing whatever forces from beyond they can muster at the poor slob. While this can slow down the winner, my experience has often been that this is often all it does with the player typically buying the remaining levels or lucking into them through card play. Your mileage may vary, but I doubt you'll find Munchkin Cthulhu endings significantly different from previous versions. In fact, of the times I've played, the cultist-induced ending has only occurred once.

Bang for the Buck
The memory of Munchkins previous will serve you well here - if you thought previous versions were worth it, you'll think this one is too. At about $20, I've found that this one doesn't get pulled out real often and has a tendency to drive many of my gamers running from the table as if Dagon himself had just appeared (an event we try to minimize around the house, but sometimes accidents happen).

Overall
All things considered, this is a Munchkin game. There's nothing here to sway your opinion of the series unless you were already feeling that it was getting a bit tired (in which case, it'll almost certainly push you over the edge). Given the festival of obscure references, the game does provide me with an opportunity to refresh my familiarity with Lovecraft, but ultimately, the jokes are a bit tired and not particularly funny. For me, this is average at best, falling to a rating of about 5 - not good, but not horrible either.

Disclaimers
Time Owned: 4 months Number of Plays: 5+
Ages Played With: 28-40 Player Counts: 3, 4, 5

Another Disclaimer!
*OK...for those who were paying attention, there were a few Lovecraft reference in there. By my count, I've managed to reference 12 different Lovecraft works by their exact title. The full list (in order) is below:
[o]The Thing on the Doorstep
The Lurking Fear
The Unnameable
The Very Old Men
Cool Air
The Other Gods
The Old Bugs
The Outsider
From Beyond
Azathoth
Dagon
The Festival
[/o]

Thread: What if... Lovecraft was a Clown.

Let's start this review with: "I like this game a lot".

Components

168 cards, rules, 1 dice.

The cards are full color unlike the original munchkin serie.

The artwork is very funny and simple so anybody can relate to it. The rules are clean and there is always the backup: "If something is unclear the owner decides" that I love so much.

Objective

Reach level 10 with your hero.

Gameplay

The cards are divided in 2 main groups: DOORS & TREASURES.

Each turn players open a DOOR and check if there is a MONSTER or something else. If it is a monster they fight it, if it is a CURSE they suffer it, if it is something else they keep it.

The way to defeat a monster is to sum your actual level with the bonus provided by treasures, represented as armor, weapons, gear, and ichors and compare it to the level of the MONSTER/s. If your level is higher you win the treasures described in the cards, if you fail you suffer the "Bad Stuff".

Other players can help you or add monsters to your encounters through the use of special cards. Also they can curse you and do some other mean stuff. This is why negotiation is a strong key in the game and since this is a PARTY GAME, where you will get the most fun.

Everytime you defeat a monster you gain 1 level. Also there are treasures that let you gain an extra level or monsters that let you gain 2 levels.

There are special professions that define some additional abilities (investigator, monster whacker, professor and cultist).

Conclusion

This is not a serious game but a must have for any Lovecraft fan for the simple fact that you will find a mockery of the entire lovecraftian world on this game. Names like Shog Goth depicting 2 people dress as Goths or the Geek Ones or even the adorable Chibbithulhu are as common jokes as it is everything coming from President Bush's Mouth.

So if you are looking for a game to have fun with a bunch of friends this will secure a great time.

I haven't gotten this Munchkin yet, but after looking at the rules, I was disappointed that there were no sanity rules.

For solo play, then, could you strive to get your character to level 10 (or higher) before being killed 10 (or less) times? Each time your character is killed, his sanity level drops by 1.

Would that work within the context of the rules?

Or, does your character not tend to die much in the encounters (low level monsters)?

Thread: Solo play

Yes, I know the Munchkin series are to be played by your many friends, but sometimes it happens that I am the only one in the mood for this game so I play it alone.

The variation is very simple:

- I play it to 10 rounds (Feel free to change this to the number you consider will provide you with more entertainment).

- If in 10 rounds you have not reached level 10, then you lose the game.

- As in my multiplayer sessions you can only sell a 1000 worth cost items per turn, not more. This slows the game a little bit but adds more to the competition. In solo you can use the regular rule, but difficulty is always good for a hungry spirit.

Simple, fast, easy to follow.

SANITY RULE

- The player has 5 points as a SANITY COUNTER. (Feel free to change this to the number you consider will provide you with more entertainment)

- Everytime you are supposed to die, instead you lose half your items (rounded down) and your class plus 1 point of sanity.

- If you lose all your sanity point that is the END. You are mad and jailed in the looney house.

Read my other Rules (http://boardgamegeek.com/browser.php?itemtype=thread&article...)

Thread: Mini-Review: Munchkin Cthulhu

This review was originally posted on my blog, http://www.gamecrafters.net.

Got Fhtaghn? Those who have been reading this blog for a while may remember that I’m a fan of both Munchkin and Arkham Horror. It should come as no surprise, then, that a game that combines aspects of both games would interest me. I bought Munchkin Cthulhu last night and got to play a game of it today, and I was not disappointed. The game is, as you’d expect, an irreverent and pun-filled send-up of Lovecraft’s mythos, obviously created by people who both know and love all things having to do with Cthulhism or Yog-Sothothery. The game includes some really funny cards, some of my favorites bing “The Cruller out of Space” and “Tht Whch Hs N Vwls”.

Aside from the comic element, Munchkin Cthulhu does introduce a few new elements to the Munchkin formula. One of the classes, the Cultist, works differently from the others in that you can’t get rid of that class of your own volition once you’ve taken it on, and certain cards can force you to become one. Further, if everyone but one player has become a Cultist, that last player immediately gains a level (a level which can win the game), and when everyone’s a Cultist, the game immediately ends. Another new rule involves “goth” monsters; that is, monsters that end in the suffix “-goth”. So, when cards like “Shoggoth”, “Froggoth”, “Buggoth”, or “Fun Guy from Yuggoth” are played, they have the ability to summon another “goth” monster to the fight. It’s sort of like having a bunch of extra “Wandering Monster” cards in the game.

The mechanics seem to have the same attention to balance as in previous iterations (which is to say, very little). But really, that’s what Munchkin is all about, right?

What I Liked: It’s funny, it’s fun and easy to play, and it takes Munchkin to a level of geekiness well beyond previous versions of the game.

What I Didn’t Like: It suffers from the same pitfalls as previous versions. Namely, there’s a lot of luck involved, and if you get screwed early on it can last for the entire game.

The Bottom Line: If you like Munchkin and H.P. Lovecraft, this game will tickle you in indescribable ways with its squamous pseudopods. If you’re not a fan of Munchkin, don’t bother; it doesn’t change the game significantly enough to convert anyone. Also, like other versions of the game, it can be combined with all of the previous versions of the game, giving some extra impetus to buy it if you already own one or more other Munchkin games.
Thread: Re: First Impressions: Munchkin Cthulhu

I picked up MC yesterday, and I tend to agree that the humor in this set is a little predictable.

Gameplay was pretty par for the course. I played a four player game, and the Cultist rules worked pretty well, I guess. I didn't get to fight more than two monsters for some reason, though. The other three players seemed to get monsters every turn. I guess I just had a really unlucky game.

All in all I'd say that this particular expansion wasn't an earth-shattering achievement, but it's pretty good if you like Cthulhu, Munchkin, and bad puns.

I felt that the Munchkin Cthulhu deck was a little monster light also. Then I played again and it was the fastest Munchkin game of my life. I bought Munchkin and Munchkin 2 at the same time (and Munchkin 4 several years later), so my Munchkin experience only with more cards.

I too was a little disappointed with the Lovecraftian monsters. There were too many Goth monsters and not enought mythos monsters. However, I have enjoyed the puns, even the anachronisms.

I play Munchkin mostly with my 6-year-old son (he's well versed in the Mythos) and occassionally with my ESL students. Munchkin is supposed to be silly and children love silly things. My son now calls his baby sister, whose name is Saga, Saggoth. ;-)

All in all, MC is fun, but not as fun as the original Munchkin. Maybe blended will provide more fun.

The bumper sticker lets you get another +1 bonus if you have a steed or a vehicle, neither of which appear in this game... at least the flamethrower got ONE reference...

As a non-munchkin player who is in love with anything mythos related, I found my first experience with the rules of the game to be a bit iffy but overall our group had fun. Our group has been playing the CoC RPG and Arkham Horror board game 1-3 times a week for years now and we found the game quite funny, and a relaxing spin off from our normal gaming. Now of course being Arkham Horror players we are all rules lawyers so much arguing over "buddy stabbing" ensued with much hilarity.

I don't know, I rather liked it. I played a game last night and thought that it held together better than some of the other sets with expansions - not too many stretches of not drawing any monsters, and lots of fun cards.

I really like that the minor monster enhancers (+3) are also playable on cultists as a pernament bonus - it makes becoming a cultist an attractive gambit.

the flame thing is probaly in you combine MC with out munchkin games.

I know in the original munchkin and star munchkin, different ways to do damage (like flames) mattered in some fights (mainly star)

Yeah, I figured the flame thing might hook into other versions of Munchkin, but it seemed kind of sad that in the end there was only one type of each card (flame weapon/flame-vulnerable monster) in the stand-alone MC game. I don't know if everyone else immediately blends all their decks, but I prefer to keep them separate (or "thematically unified," if you prefer).

Thread: First Impressions: Munchkin Cthulhu

Hi. Lurker decloaking off the port bow with some first impressions of Munchkin Cthulhu.

OVERALL SITUATION

These are the circumstances under which Munchkin Cthulhu (MC) came into my life, as it were...

This is a game I have been looking forward to for a while. Unlike some here, I enjoy playing Munchkin games -- at least the ones I have thus far: original Munchkin (with expansions 2-4) and Munchkin Bites (with Pants Macabre). Having been an avid D&D player in my youth and a general horror/fantasy fan to this day, I find the gameplay light and fun, the themes entertaining, and the humour amusing.

I also like the Cthulhu Mythos (as I'm sure will everyone even remotely interested in this). I have read most if not all of Lovecraft's work over the years, along with Clark Ashton Smith and other associated stuff. I played the Call of Cthulhu RPG in my younger days. And to top it all off, I was given Arkham Horror last week by my girlfriend (how lucky am I?) and we've played it a couple times already. Thus, I'm recently reacquainted with the terminology, critters, settings, and so on -- perhaps too much so.

Anyway, I was happy when I saw that MC was finally for sale, and I snapped it up.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

As I was thumbing through the cards for the first time, my general impression was one of disappointment. Simply put, the humour seemed kind of lame. Perhaps there are many who would argue that the entire Munchkin series is founded on lame humour, but as I've said, I have enjoyed previous versions. This time around, though, the jokes seemed too easy or in questionable taste.

For example, the Mythos's "King in Yellow" is represented in MC as the "King in Pink," complete with a guy in a pink ballet costume hopping around. Hardy har.

Then there are the Classes: Cultist (yay!), Investigator (yawn), Professor (yawn), and Monster Whacker (huh?).

The decision to run with variations on "-goth" for many of the monsters is okay, I suppose (with most at least slant-rhyming with Shoggoth), but the results are mixed (Loggoth? Heh. Froggoth? Okay. Joggoth? Meh.).

Some names are worse: Aughost Derwraith? Nightie Gaunts (+3 vs. males)? Yuck.

It's not all bad; I thought H.P. Munchcraft was kinda funny (if somewhat obvious).

The Go Up a Level cards include a bunch where you "inform" authority figures (FBI, Army, President) that are depicted as being already under the Mythos's control; this is counter to my Mythos understanding, where the investigators are usually outside "normal" channels and sometimes (as in HPL's "Call of Cthulhu") actively trying to suppress the knowledge. I may be overthinking, but this kind of thing does dim the mood for me.

The potions this time 'round are all "ichors" (not necessarily a Mythos thing to my mind, but oh well); however, they all rhyme with "icker" (Quicker Ichor, Ichor Liquor, Kicker Ichor, etc.). It's simply not possible that they think ichor is pronounced "icker," is it? Are they yanking my chain? I sincerely hope so...

One last thing: cards such as "Necrotelecom" headgear (or having Dubya portrayed as the president) don't fit with a 1920s milieu!

Am I being too picky? I dunno. YMMV. The end result was that I wasn't as amused as I wanted to be, and the parody seemed a bit clunky.

FIRST GAME

(I'm going to assume you know how to play Munchkin and that I don't have to explain the mechanics.)

I played a two-player game with my girlfriend. I lost (but it was close: Level 9 vs. Level 10). All in all, it played like Munchkin usually plays, with a few exceptions.

There didn't seem to be enough monsters. We actually had to reshuffle the Door deck to finish. This is certainly a result of there being no expansion decks for MC yet; we're used to having plenty of cards. I was intrigued enough to compare MC to the bare Munchkin Bites deck, and they have exactly the same number (and levels) of monster cards. It felt, however -- and I haven't counted, so it's just my impression -- like there are more Curse/monster augmentation/"trip up the other guy" cards, which perhaps make it harder to make levels. With no Races or Powers (just Classes), I guess the extra cards have to go somewhere.

The Cultist rules (the major wrinkle introduced in MC) are designed for groups larger than two, therefore they didn't get much of a workout in our game. If everyone in a larger game becomes a Cultist, the game ends (and the highest level player is the winner). Perhaps this will add some tension to a five- or six-player game.

My girlfriend liked the Investigator's Sneak and Peak ability (get a preview of the Door card and swipe it by discarding three other cards). As I've mentioned, I found the classes conceptually bland.

All in all, gameplay was alright, but didn't feel terribly "Cthulhu-esque."

A FEW STRAY NIGGLES

There's a flamethrower, but only one card (Foggoth) that is affected extraordinarily by flame; this feels like a leftover concept that didn't get developed.

Also, the "Dunwich Snorer" card is supposed to get "an extra +10 instead of being doubled" if "The Stars Are Right" is played, but the TSAR card says it gives each monster +3, not double strength -- I guess it got nerfed at some point during playtesting.

I think I'll go back to Munchkin Bites and keep my eye out for an MC expansion some time in the future...

Cheers!

The game is in the printer and Steve Jackson Games has offered us a little peak of the impending doom that soon is upon us. Three small sample cards, no news there: Kovalic art, you get a class, there is the wandering monster and a odd bonus items.
On the selling side(warehouse 23) it is written that there should be four new classes: Monster Whacker, Investigator, Professor, or Cultist.

The cultist has +2 for every other cultist in play, so it´s really pointed out in this version that teaming up is a nice thing to do. Wonder if my cultist minion of Munchkin Bites! counts.

http://www.sjgames.com/munchkin/munchkincthulhu/
