Thread: Re: max range for weapons?

Absolutely correct. Basically all Tannhäuser scenarios take place in very confined spaces, so the weapon rules transport this in a very convincing plus playable way, IMO. Other games punish longer ranges with "precision" modifers - TH tries a different approach by the minimum range rules (=it is easier to draw/aim a small weapon, when standing closer to each other, than a large and heavy one).

But beware: several special weapons have (or will have, when expansions are available) maximum ranges, like "Doom" (max. range is current mental value plus 1).

That's how I understand the rules. No maximum, but target must be a minimum spaces away.

Thread: max range for weapons?

i've read through the ffg rules and universal head's summaries about a dozen times but i don’t see anything about maximum ranges for close combat, automatic or heavy weapons mentioned anywhere. the minimum ranges are obviously in the weapon descriptions which leads me to believe since maximum was left out, there is no maximum. is this a correct assumption or am i just missing it?

thanks,
~fry

It's the relatively simplistic concepts that make this a good game.

It's meant to be a FPS type game, only on a gaming board.

That doesn't make it a bad game, however, just one that would be great for folks that don't want a 12 hour board game experience.

It's quick, deadly, and fun.

I'll willingly play!

I didn't have a problem seeing the pathfinding system either, but I must admit the game is too simple and i was bored with it after 1 play. Ill never willingly play this one again.

I've used the board in a normal lighted environment and everything is easy to see

Perhaps the finish on your board is different to mine. I have a reflection off the board in most artificial lighting conditions unless I'm viewing it almost at perpendicular. Makes differentiation of closely related colours on the Pathfinding System pretty difficult. Otherwise great components and a great game. Bring on Novgorod!

Thread: Demon Germans and high-tech Unions

Tannhäuser comes in a heavy box. There are 10 pre-painted miniatures, 10 cards with miniature stats, a double sided board with nice artwork, 6 10-sided dice, lots of heavy cardboard tokens and even some bags to store the tokens. The quality of the components is great and creates a nice atmosphere. The rulebook is clear and easy to read. I won't go into much rules details here, feel free to download the rulebook from the fantasy flight website.

Tannhäuser is basically a simplified miniature war game on a board. Players take turns moving the miniatures and performing actions like attacking or searching for equipment. There are 4 modes of play: capture the flag, domination, deathmatch and story mode. People with some experience with first-person shooter PC games will know what the first 3 are about. Story mode means that there are objectives on the board and you have to solve these by using the character that has the corresponding skill. The idea of having different modes isn't bad, but a lot of them end up in deathmatch anyway.

Movement on the board uses a predefined path. Each circle counts as one movement point and every character has a maximum number of movement points per turn. The circles on the paths are also used to indicate line of sight. This is truly a brilliant system. If my piece is on a red circle, then I can see / attack every other piece that has a red circle. Some circles have multiple colors (e.g. a doorway), so you can see 2 different paths, but pieces on those 2 different paths can also see you.

I've seen a lot of complaints about the darkness of the board which "makes the pathfinding system useless". I'm not sure why people are complaining about this. I've used the board in a normal lighted environment and everything is easy to see. You can clearly see the paths and where a path is connected to a different path. You can see which doors are closed and which are open. I've had no problem whatsoever. The system works great and there is no possible argument for "line of sight" issues. It's a lot easier to use the correct tactics if you're not used to play with miniatures. If you move a miniature, you can be sure whether it can or can't attack another piece. It sure beats measuring and checking line of sight.

You attack by rolling a certain amount of 10-sided dice. The defending player also uses dice to defend. This might sound like a dice-fest and I'll admit that there is a certain amount of luck involved. But there is still a lot of room for strategy (e.g. what equipment you will use). Your miniatures stats decrease with each hit and will die after a lot of them.

Gameplay if fun and there is very little downtime. It's not too complicated and you will certainly know how to play after 1 game. The pathfinding system works great in learning to play. Some people won't like the dice but I don't have a problem with it. I wouldn't play it with 10 people though, because a player is eliminated when their mini dies.

Thread: Re: printing and cutting bonus tokens

I wrote a brief article about this on a blog I contribute to called Savage Tales that has a Tannhauser Tuesdays feature:

I bought a 1 1/8" circle paper punch. These are available for anywhere from six to ten dollars. I found one online, but they are also available at craft stores. The full name of the product is Paper Shapers Nesting Punch manufactured by EK Success. Tannhauser tokens are actually 30mm so it's about a millimeter off - pretty much unnoticible.

Punch out 2 or 3 circles (I use three) out of standard cardboard stock (say, like cereal box thickness) and glue those together with white glue to achieve the thickness of a standard Tannhauser token. Use as little glue as possible, just enough to cover the surface. If you use too much it will ooze out the sides and cause the cardboard to warp. Once the "centre" is glued, set it aside to dry. Next punch out the print out of the tokens you wish to mount. Again, apply as little white glue as possible and apply the two images to either side side of the cardboard centre. Voila - almost indistinguishable from the real deal!

You can read my full articles here. There are some ready made token sheets (with "bleed") specifically set up for the circular punch that you can download there (scroll down to the June 30th entry Making Better Tokens - Part II).

Hope that helps.

Hola,

Thread: Re: Tannhäuser - A TWO player game review
I agree that the game needs to be two player to work properly. With more players it is almost garunteed that someone will be left out early on. I find that characters can die pretty quickly so it's easy for one person to be left in the corner fiddling with himself.

Nice review, and good to see a positive one on here as the first few are all negative. It is good, fast, and brutal fun. Where is my english translation of the expansion already?!?

- J

Good review, and probably dead on. I've only played it as a two player game, so I can't speak to more bodies controlling characters. I know when I play, I often use troopers as bait, or plan my attack by utilizing other characters first. Having to rely on a teammate may make your strategy a bit wonky...then again, it may add another element.

I really like the game too, its got a great setting, and is just good fun...what more should I want?

Thread: Re: Tannhäuser - A TWO player game review

It's great to see that you got over it.

To clarify my point, Out of the box, Tannhaüser feels like a two player game, unlike, let's say, one of those world conquest game. To me it's like chess, It's not meant to have five players on one board.

The Heroes are better characters than the average trooper,
chances are, once a team is split, some player will be more powerful than others.
Plus, if there is an odd number of players, its up to them to figure out who is who on which side and trying to even it out.

The game session I did lead me to believe that it's important to know all pieces of owers/weapons/artifact on the board, not just your own.
You probably want to make sure how TNT works before having it thrown in your face.
Beside, there is "only" five characters to control, it's easier, for me, to devise a effective strategy if I control and know all of them. Trivial things such as the Nighteyes/Smoke Grenade "combo" is easier done then.

I really like this game, I highly recommend it for its two player aspect. Yet, in case of 3 players or more, I know this one won't be in my game of choice.

Thread: Tannhäuser - A TWO player game review

Tannhauser is a originally a french game taking placing in a fictitious thirty year long version of The Great War. Fantasy Flight Games offers a good, english, translation.
It's a great game with a lot of potential, yet its main strengths are also its main weaknesses.

Let's be clear, despite what the box says, this game is meant to be played by two players.
The game system consist of two factions of five soldiers competing on a board. Sure, it is possible to split a faction in two or more, but it feels like handing the control to someone else rather than cooperation.

The box itself is covered with some of the very neat art,
which is the only reason why this reviewer bought the game in the first place. Thankfully, the content is also interesting. The minis looks great and the double-sided board add replay value. On the other hand, there is tons of different token and the rulebook is eerily thick.

The first big strength of Tannhäuser is its high customization value.
The whole thing seems to have a very strong First Person Shooter video game influence. The player can agree on difficulty levels, and chose a game type such as "Deathmatch", "Domination" and "Capture the Flag" among others. Once the game type is set, the players need to chose four specific piece of equipments for each of their units. In addition to the optional heroes sold separately, their is a huge amount of choosing to be made before the frantic gameplay can begin.

Which leads to the big weakness of Tannhaüzer, the very steep learning curve.
Even without any expansion or add-on, you are still treated to an imposing 47 pages rulebook and 160 token. The "core" rules are intuitive, but with character specific equipments that can change the tide of battle, it takes a while to master this game. And like I said earlier, this is mainly a two player game, so you'll have to show the ropes to your buddies one at the time. It sure is nice to adjust each unit to one taste and occasion, but setting up the board might take longer than playing game itself on the first games.

On the other hand, the online support from Take on You for this game is the best I have seen from any boardgames so far; new map, gameplay scenario and equipment periodically added on their website. Thankfully, Fantasy Flight Game translate the whole thing to english. In addition, user created content is also plentiful. So once you master the basics, there is A LOT of replay value and tweaking available for free. Beside new heroes can be purchased for about 10$.

All in all, it is an excellent two player game that allows A LOT of customization even without the extension. Best of all, it remains fairly balanced. But in order to take the most out of it, a gamer needs to learn most the options Tannhäuser has to offer.

The game just needs a bit more *something* to be really good. Hopefully, we'll see that *something* in the expansions (Operation Novogord, are you listening?)

Thread: Re: Domination mode skewed to Union?

I have found something similar, although only in theory so far.

It seems to me that whichever side comes through the front door in the indoor map will win on the 2nd turn unless the other side is very lucky.

There are 6 objective spaces on the board. Three of these are reachable on the 2nd turn from the stairwell. 4 of them are reachable on the 2nd turn from the front door. Unless the 'stairwell' team us lucky with the initiative roll, the 'front door' team can get all four flags planted at the beginning of turn 2.

I have yet to try this in an actual game, but I have played through several variations solo, all with the same result.

Hopefully someone will be able to demonstrate how the above is incorrect!

Thanks
Chris

PS: The above was with the Reich coming through the door and the Union up the stairwell.

Thread: Manorhouse commentary... Team Obscura for the win!

Macneal had run through the plan hundreds of times in his head, and he was doing it again as he ran up the stairs from the basement. One of the pouches on his belt felt warm, as if the ancient parchment was giving off it's own heat. Hit fast if you could, make sure that trooper Alpha or Tala put down some smoke when the time came for him to work his magic, and be positive that everyone engages from as far away as possible. And kill the old man quickly. It went downhill from there.

Barry Brown made the first mistake, went a little to far down a hallway trying to setup a decent killzone for his heavy machine gun, and Macneal and Tala did everything they could to make the old man pay for causing the heavy gunner to begin screaming and running in fear down the hallway. The evil stuff these bad guys were into was disturbing to think about and terrifying to see unleashed in combat. At least Barry maintained enough of his faculties to hold onto his modified weapon. Most all of the guns they carried were "enhanced", but those darned mods weren't the most reliable things Macneal had come across. Sure, they threw out the required amounts of lead, but at least a time or two on a clip something special happened. It didn't seem like lead that bored out of the muzzles, that was for sure. Or maybe it was lead, warped through some feat of physics, with something special added from the juice from the batteries and from the wires and components crammed underneath the gold plates integrated into the fire chambers and housing of the machine guns. Whatever the case, everyone's must have been dropped in deep puddles of muddy water prior to the firefight, cause the magic just wasn't happening.

Not much more than a half minute later, after Alpha and Barry went down with guns blazing, Macneal realized something wasn't working right, he wasn't seeing the flash. He quickly emptied out his current clip and over half of another before the strobe effect dazzled the room. Tala's dynamite shook what seemed like the world, he jammed in a fresh clip, and with his goggles on he moved quickly through the hallways and rooms, moving towards the enemy like a cat stalking prey. Tala said the old man shook off the blast, said she had tossed it not much more than seven or eight feet behind him, but she said that when she'd looked back over her shoulder as she ran around the doorway, he was staggered alright, but he sure as hell wasn't dead like he should have been.

Macneal decided to quickly take care of that amazing feat of survival, and he did just that a second after he opened the door to the room where Heizinger, Eva and that demon tainted Stosstruppen were holing out. He ripped at least five bullets into the old man's chest, he was probably dead before the flash erupted and his body was vaporized by the energy and velocity of the projectile. He quickly stepped back behind the door and closed it, going as far to put his shoulder and the toe of his boot into it as he listened closely, hoping to hear what the other two menaces would do now that the Marquis Hermann Von Heizinger was, for all intents and purposes, dust in the wind. He heard a footsteps and a door slam not too far away, at least one of them had run out of the room and into or across the smokey hallway that cuts across the middle of the manorhouse. He heard a gun shot, then exactly two screams (one from a male, Delta no doubt, of extreme pain, and a fainter one just before it that Macneal thought sounded like a million souls crying out for mercy). Ozo was firing his pistol, Doom, and if Tala and him couldn't get something done fast about that, they weren't going to be able to get the job done. At least Macneal didn't hear the near constant machine gun fire coming from the Schocktruppen any longer. Delta had at least taken care of that trigger-happy problem.

It didn't matter much, because Delta paid the price moments later when the Stosstruppen cut him down with his taint-infused left hand a combat knife held in his right. Macneal and Tala both knew that they only thing that they could do was get an area buttoned down as quickly as they could, hit hard and when they did do it fast, and move to another position that they could maybe defend long enough for the remaining bad guys and gal to make a mistake or two.

Sadly, that wasn't to be. Tala, in a panic, had the door in the doorway that she was covering nearly knock her to the floor and the Stosstruppen nearly kill her before he quickly ran for cover around another corner a half second after Macneal stormed into the room. Between Eva's whip, the inhuman fury of the Stosstruppen's melee prowess and physical strength, and of course Ozo's spectral ordnance streaking around corners, Tala hit the ground first, and Macneal, refusing to flee and thus to delay the inevitable, fell seconds after her.

The half destroyed dining room was quiet save the soft sounds of Eva's boots as she crossed it, reached down and pulled the parchment from the pouch laying next to Macneal's still body.

***

The manorhouse map has been a tough one for the Union at my gaming table. Eight or so plays in and the Union has one maybe two or three wins max. We haven't played the basement map yet or anything other than deathmatches, so maybe Macneal and his crew will have a better time of it there.

Again, not sure is I understand the question, but as I said, it states in the rulebook you must equal or exceed the Difficulty Score that is based on a specific Characteristic Value. Thus, in a Combat Roll you must equal or exceed the target's Combat Value, for example.

Unless I misunderstand your question, there are no possibilities for ties as the rolls are not simultaneous.

Step 1 (Attacker): You make your Combat Roll and try to roll your target's Combat Value or Higher. Each Success is a "hit".

Step 2 (Defender): Each hit is "soaked" by the target if their Shock Roll equals or beats the attacker's Combat Value.

Step 3 (Attacker): Apply the effects of any weapons that cause Automatic Wounds (with no Shock Roll).

Half-official answer (I translated the soon-to-be-published second edition of the German rules):
- all terrain modifications have to be respected
- only enemy characters may be moved
- movement has to end on a free circle
- ovement over occupied circles is allowed, as long as there are friendly characters on these circles (with the same affiliation symbol as the moved character).

So, I have a question about moving the character that is successfully affected by the Patmos amulet: the attacker moves the piece his successes number of circles, but can he move it through occupied circle? What about when there is friendly character in the circle and what about when there is friendly to the panicked one there?

My guess (and the way I'll choose to play it) is since this is no "move phase" but different set of rules, you can move the character wherever you like in range, as far as it is not an occupied circle - no matter that it would require bullrush if it was a "move phase" action. But do you know if there's an official clarification somewhere in the rulebooks or errata that will justify that?

Crate tokens are randomly picked and placed on action circles. Players won't know what's in the crates when they move characters to them to check the contents. Most of the time it'll be something useful (to some degree), but there is always the chance that a player searches a crate and come up with the dreaded "0" victory point. It reminds me of the words Charlie Brown speaks in the Halloween episode, when he reaches into his bag after everyone else has announced the cool goodies they've found in their own sacks...

"I got a rock."

WinterWolf

***BTW, welcome to BGG!
