Thread: Re: Do terrain cards hang around?

The way we've always played is that whenever someone decides to build, all the face-up cards drawn during the track-building phase are placed in the discard pile regardless of how many of the track were used to "help" with the build.

In the first sentence of point 2 of the "End of the track-building phase", I think the first "used" is redundant. That's what may be throwing you off.

This should take care of your related auction question since there won't be any of these cards if an auction is triggered.

OK, we played our first couple games, and I guess I have a related question. Are you supposed to only use as many/few of the faceup terrain "helper" cards as you NEED? I noticed once that my wife basically scooped up all the helper cards even though she didn't need all of them to cross her terrain card. I let her do it, but it didn't seem hardly right. Again I don't think the rules forbid it, or deny it. Any thoughts?

Thread: Do terrain cards hang around?

I'm about to play the game for the first time. I think I have a pretty good handle on the rules, but I'm not sure about this one thing. During the Track Building phase, you flip over a card from the "draw pile" and can use the # of tracks shown to help you build over your next terrain card. If you choose not to build, the next player flips over a terrain card and can use the COMBINED number of tracks on BOTH cards to help him build, right?

So let's say the 2nd player is able to build across his next terrain, but doesn't need to use all the faceup terrain cards to help him. Let's say he only "needs" to use the 2nd of the 2 faceup cards. My questions are:

1. After he builds his track, do ALL the faceup terrain "helper" cards get discarded, or only the one(s) that the player actually used? So for example, if he only needs the 2nd faceup card to build, does he discard that one, and leave the original 1st faceup card so the next player can use it?

2. Eventually you'll need to trigger another Auction phase (as soon as ANYONE has run out of terrain cards in front of his locomotive). My question now is... are ALL the faceup train cards discarded before the auction begins, so that the next Track Building phase starts with 0 cards faceup to begin with? Or do these faceup helper cards just hang around until somebody uses one (or more) of them?

The rules seemed pretty unclear on this (and many other) points. I don't have the rules in front of me, but I seem to recall the wording something like "discard the track cards used". Which leads me to believe that AT NO TIME are the faceup terrain cards summarily discarded to clear them all... only the ones that are actually used are discarded. Which I presume might mean there could be a stack of 20 faceup cards if they all had 0 tracks showing!
