Needing to end by exact count favors someone further back who can come in and push you out of position as you set up for the finish (It will always happen that way -- which makes it a sort of backwards race).

Another variant is "No pushing is allowed in the finish spaces or in any space that is one hex away from the finish spaces". Either way the end pushing to throw off someones ability to finish needs a fix.

You don't stop by changing your speed. You change your speed and then move your new speed.

When you've pushed a ship but you don't have enough movement left to continue moving, do you just stop or lose that movement point?

You CANNOT push a ship if you do not have the movement points to do so. Example: if you were moving three, and you move one and then two and then attempt to push a ship, you could not, because it costs two to do it. Example: if you are moving two and your first move is to push a ship, that costs two and then you don't move anymore.

True, but you should have noticed that four of the tiles have just red buildings while the other four that have buildings on them have either brown or a mixture of red and brown. If you put the passengers the way it is stated and ignore the fact that a couple of the brown building tiles also have a red one in the mix, you will have four tiles with one passenger waiting and four with two, which is what you need to use up the 8 passengers specified for a four player game.

I just picked this up at my local game store and I've read through the rules, including the passage indicating that when playing with four you place a single passenger at red piers and doubles at browns. Then I go to the game pieces and discover that some of the piers have both red and brown buildings at them.

Can anyone provide any insight into which is which?

             Sag.

Thread: 2 players, 2nd game

Tonight when I said "what would you like to play" my wife suggested a rematch of Mississipi Queen.

After our first game, I was determined to try running one boat as pure interference. And this time we remembered to only put one passenger on each wharf.

The Play

I went first. We had an early clear-ish run, no passenger on the initial river tile. (Though my wife faced an island with one of her boats and chose to start it at an angle rather than straight up the river.)

Both of us ran our first boats out hard at speed 4 and took it easier with the second, though the leading three boats were all in immediately adjacent hexes after the second turn. The first passenger came out on the next river tile in an awkward location, and we chose to ignore it until at the last moment I caved in my resolve and my trailing boat took the detour to collect it, ending up faaaar behind.

So this left me in a dilmena... my trailing boat now seemed out of contention and certainly wasn't in a position to mess with anyone else for quite a while. I'd basically abandoned my plan to run one interference boat. Oh well.

Out of the first four passengers, we took one each. Both my wife's boats, and my trailing boat, were running lead-footed and burning the coal very quickly while my lead boat managed to cruise through several tiles without much stress, though not getting further in front.

My trailing boat took another difficult detour to collect a second passenger that nobody else wanted (stuck in an island cove near the outside corner of a river bend). But a few shoves and pushes among the pack were keeping me from falling further behind.

We got to the 3rd last and 2nd last tiles having passengers on them, my wife had taken the lead by pushing up her speed but was planning a heavy foot on the brakes and burning ALL her remaining coal to claim the second last passenger, and even then only by overshooting slightly to the side while turning in each turn so she would wind up facing pretty much sideways on the river and tucked behind an island. (She'd set up and partially executed this plan before the last passenger was visible.) I had the option to push her awkwardly when she was one space away and still on speed 3, but if I did she would have abandoned the second last passenger and gone for the last one instead... and I still needed a passenger myself! I left her to her fate and went the other way around the island instead, taking the easy last passenger and cruising on toward the finish line from a clear vantage.

Meanwhile my trailing boat, now coal-less but with two passengers, was ramping up the speed one notch each turn and soon that spec in everyone's rear view mirrors was growing rapidly.

It did indeed to turn out to be excrutiating for my wife's boat to extricate itself from the island cove. My lead boat easily cruised home with one coal to spare, while my wife's boat in second place wasn't quite within interfering range. Indeed, all but my winning boat hit the second last tile at speed and with no coal remaining, and each in turn took a lap in front of the finishing wharfs in order to slow down enough to dock. Miraculously, all made it home without incident.

One cute little move... with two boats finished and my wife and I vying for 3rd and 4th place, both on the same speed with no coal remaining, both of us could reach winning spaces as soon as we could slow down to speed one, but both of us would have to waste excess movement swinging to the side or buzzing the spectators along the finish line. But I managed it so that after the turn where we both moved two, both ready to finish on the next turn, I was sitting in the centre finish line spot, guaranteeing I was first to play in the final turn.

After-thoughts

Another good game. The right amount of confrontation and interference, not too long a time, simple rules prompting a little (but not too much) contemplation of your options each turn. I'm enjoying the variation the random river tile placement gives but the random element doesn't even remotely overwhelm the deliberate decision making. And the very slight hinderance of not knowing what's coming puts the brakes just a little on whichever boat is furthest along the course. All in all a very nicely designed game.

One thing we're noticing is the bits are physically fiddly... the passengers are inclined to fall off and the wheels don't always turn easily. And in this second game we were still having trouble remembering which boats have already moved each turn. I will make some custom adjustments to track all this better... something similar to the "cabins" in the Black Rose expansion, and some markers we can drop on the boats to show which ones have moved.

Thread: Re: First full game. 2 players.

. . . I was considering buying the Black Rose expansion as well. As far as I can see, you don't need the Black Rose expansion to play 2P or the Black Rose boat with 2P to 4P. You would need the expansion to play 5 players with Black Rose, or to play six players, or to use the funky new river features. . . .

We play almost exclusively with the Black Rose regardless of the number of players. The addition of the Black Rose riverboat (effectionately referred to in our group as 'Rosie') and the new river tiles (e.g. sandbars, debris, coaling stations) really do improve the basic game.

The only time we play the basic Mississippi Queen is when we're introducing it to novice gamers.

Thread: First full game. 2 players.

With an introductory "game" (ie really just a practise of the mechanisms) under our belts, tonight we played the real deal for two players. ie we played two paddle-wheelers each, one player taking #1 and #4, the other taking #2 and #3. You are allowed to exchange coal between your boats if they are in adjacant spaces at the same speed after either or both have moved. And you only put one passenger on each passenger station... exactly enough for everyone and none to spare.

We made one error during actual play... as per a four player game we were putting out 2 passengers on each brown passenger station, meaning we knew there would be four to spare during the course of the course.

The Game

The first couple of passengers had set themselves up in a pretty tricky spot to get to. Given we (oops) knew there would be four passengers too many we both avoided those tricky couple. After a few initial jostles we soon found ourselves a little spread out over about three river tiles, and I was concerned there would be little interplay between us.

I shouldn't have worried.

The spread had happened because I'd used coal early to initially speed up then rapidly slow both my boats for passenger pickups without losing too much ground, while my wife had pressed one boat on ahead at speed while her other was conserving its coal and lagging a little.

The minute my wife's leading boat slowed to pick up the first passenger the pack were on her like hungry wolves, shoving her around and clogging the channels, which also allowed her rear boat to catch up in an amazing tangle that resolved itself with one of my boats forging on ahead while the other burned a lot of coal to create speed points and shove BOTH her boats ... pushing the rear boat onto the passenger point still at speed two (so she couldn't execute her planned pickup) and tucking her other boat next to it, slightly head, but stuck behind an outcrop of land. In a cunning counter move, she chose her lead boat to point backwards, and used her lead boat to shove her trailing boat off the passenger pickup point thus allowing it to pick up after all.

She returned to the lead when my lead boat slowed for its second passenger.

Another sweet little move was one where her lead boat dialed down one speed PURELY so as not to reveal the next river tile, leaving my boats coming up just behind her guessing where the river would go next. (And she says she's not a "gamer"... that's about as gamey a move as I could imagine!)

As we were nearing the last few tiles, her lead boat still had only one passenger but the rest of us were fully loaded. As she stopped to successfully pick up the last passenger, my boat (coming second) was able to shove her a little backwards from the wharf, and my second boat burned all but one of its remaining coal to pour on the steam and shove her a second push, putting her directly behind the passengers' island from the finish line. She repaid me in kind by having her trailing boat burn ALL its remaining coal to join the jostle.

Now my lead boat was making a measured approach to the landing area, but my second boat and her (now) third boat were both at full steam and no chance to slow down. As a shining example to Sydney Ferries my "second" boat reached the final wharfs first... at ramming speed! (Taking out the boat's captain, crew, both passengers, and a selection of spectators on the shore.) With a little jostling my originally lead boat was first into a side channel, and was able to use its last coal point to dial down from speed 3 to 1 to chug home to the central landing area for line honours. The same jostling had given her coal-less boat the brakes it needed to make it into the side landing area on the same turn at "only" speed three, but alas on the next turn could not dial down quite soon enough or turn enough and she hit the bank at speed two, causing minor injuries and being disqualified. Also on that turn, her final boat (the one that had been shoved behind the island) came in safe at the side landing with passengers.

*Whew* Very surprised how close and suspenseful the last few turns were.

After-thoughts

It would be interesting to decide at the outset that one of your boats was specifically running interference and not actually trying to get two passengers and win. You could harry the other player, shove them around a lot, and try to grab a likely passenger before they got to it. Neither of us took this approach in this first game.

Given how much the field spread out early on in the game I was surprised how well slowing down for passengers gave opportunities for player interaction and mayhem.

Managing the momentum of these boats is not immediately obvious. You might be at "about" the right speed and distance, but find you either have to burn coal or else take an extra turn if you want to reach the passenger pickup at speed one.

Each turn, the boats are moved in order of position in the river... leading boat first down to trailing boat last. This actually reduces the opportunities to interact (and especially noting reduces opportunities to deliberately get your own boats together) but the fact we all slow for passengers at different times created ample meetings.

We ran into a situation where one boat was on speed six and could move all the way off the front of the river. We concluded according to the rules this would be "crashing" and was required to be avoided by the player if they have the coal/ability to avoid it. So the boat slowed to speed five.

I was considering buying the Black Rose expansion as well. As far as I can see, you don't need the Black Rose expansion to play 2P or the Black Rose boat with 2P to 4P. You would need the expansion to play 5 players with Black Rose, or to play six players, or to use the funky new river features.

I absolutely enjoyed this game. My wife also enjoyed it though she compared it (a little) to RoboRally which she said for the moment she still prefers because it's "more solid". (I didn't press the question.)

Thread: Introductory "game" for 2P

I was hunting for Mississippi Queen for months, and finally ordered a copy from a gentleman in Korea. It arrived today! (Woot!)

We're a little weary at the moment, so when I started breaking out the game and waving the paddle boats hopefully at my wife, she decided to defuse my excitement early by peering at one for a few moments and then saying, "so... what IS that?"

So after dinner she reluctantly agreed to play, and brightened up considerably when I said we'd try the "introductory game", which used only half the rules and probably played in ten minutes.

So How Did The Introductory "Game" Go?

We used the Black Rose variant for 2P... two paddleboats each, my wife going 1st and 4th with me going 2nd and 3rd.

Frankly, the "introductory game" is more "introductory" than "game". It's only three river tiles long, there's no passengers to pick up, and you're allowed to hit the final landing ground at high speed without grief. Which all goes to suggest the obvious strategy of powering to high speed in your first turn or two and rushing headlong to the end.

In this instance, all three river sections came out in a straight line and only the landing platform took a left turn, but it showed there's thinking in the design by presenting an obstacle course anyway... for example opening with a narrows which three of our four boats competed to squeeze through.

All our boats spent coal in the first turn to power up to speeds of variously 3 to 5, with my wife deliberately standing in the way of one of my boats, riding as a stern shield for her lead boat through the aforementioned narrows.

There were several shoves and nudges between boats 1,2, and 4, but my boat that started 3rd was pretty much able to cruise along next to the river bank all the way to the home stretch, where my wife managed to briefly stand off my bow. But fortunately I was able to bring my other boat up to give myself a little nudge... promoting me one step closer to finish AND allowing me to face the right way.

For a brief moment I was about to win, but seeing the look in my wife's eye I judiciously retracted my step and took a wrong turn instead. Line honours thus went, once I got it right, to her #4 boat.

It was all over in about ten minutes. All four boats had plenty of leftover coal.

This certainly did the duty of introducing us to how the boats move and some possibilities of obstruction, interferance, and coordinating two boats each. And it also has whet our appetites for the "real" game. There were even those several boat shoves and attempts at blocking, so all up it's not completely souless. The rules say you can use this introductory game "with young children", and that seems about right.

Thread: Mississippi Queen - El diseño llevado al extremo (review in spanish)

[BGCOLOR=#FFFFCC]Mississippi Queen[/BGCOLOR] - Werner Hodel (Goldsieber, 1997)

¿Parece simple, no?

ChileGameGeek
www.chilegamegeek.foros.st

Thread: English production rules?

Hello,

I got my hands on the German versions of MQ and TBR. Assuming they even exist, is there a PDF version out there of the English production rules?

I have all the BGG files but prefer having a PDF to print in color to add to the game.

Thanks.

Joe.

Thread: Re: Mississippi Queen - 2 Player?

Translated from German:

Mississippi Queen for 2 Players

Preparation

One player takes the white paddle-wheeler from this expansion and the beige paddle-wheeler from the base game. The other player takes the red
paddle-wheeler from this expansion and the red paddle-wheeler from the base game.

The players decide who is to start. The starting player places his two
paddle-wheelers on starting spaces 1 and 4. The other player places his
paddle-wheelers on starting spaces 2 and 3.

Playing the game

Use the rules from the passenger game and for driving with two paddle-wheelers with the following exception: all passenger station should get just one passenger when they are placed.

Game end

The game ends when a player lands on of his paddle-wheelers at the landing platform at a speed of one with two passengers; that player is the winner. The player?s second paddle-wheeler need not have picked up passengers or even still be in the race.

------------------------------------------------------

Playing with 2 paddle-wheelers

This rule is for use with the versions, in which a player is moving two
paddle-wheelers

Except as described below, the same rules apply as in the normal game. At the beginning of a round the players determine the moving order for the paddle-wheelers. A player moving two paddle-wheelers, moves each in its own order. The player is allowed to push his other paddle-wheeler. Also, he is allowed to exchange coal between his two paddle-wheelers. Passengers, however, never change paddle-wheelers.

------------------------------------------------------

Hope this helps.

Actually, the expansion provides an additional paddle-wheel steamer in two colors matching those in the base game so that each player has two steamers in a two-player game.

You don't really need extra tiles or parts play it with 2. The 2-player variant is rule-only.

I understand the expansion lets you play with additional player or with only 2.

But is there any reason the base game cannot be played with 2? What am I missing here? Is it just a rule or two or what?

I'm missing the direction dice to Mississippi Queen.

Can someone confirm that there is 2 each of left, center, and right on the dice. Pretty sure that's what it is.

But I wanted to make sure that it didn't have 4 centers, 1 right, and 1 left.

Thanks.
And if anyone has an extra dice for trade or for some GeekGold, let me know

Mississippi Queen is, indeed, out of print.

It is one of my favorite racing games, so if you can get it at MSRP (I believe it was about $40), it would be worth it. If you end up not liking it, you can probably get at least your money back by selling it here or on eBay.

Good family fun game (one you might even convince your wife to play - mine was captivated by the hoop-skirted southern belles that serve as passengers). It may well now be OOP, along with the Black Rose expansion which was a good addition (allowed you to replenish your coal supplies amongst a couple of other additional features). Good luck finding it!

Thread: Re: Question about new tiles placement

The translation that I use states clearly that new tiles are laid AFTER the movement of the boat is finished. And they also state, very specifically, that a boat may not move off the edge of a tile. So I believe that a boat that does not have enough coal to reduce his speed or change direction before moving off the edge of the last tile is out of the race. I would guess then that a new tile is not placed because the boat ended it's movement out of the race and not on the last tile.

Thread: Re: Pushing question

Fair enough comments above. My translations do not have the bit about you cannot push onto another steamer, just not onto an island or off the tile - obviously the Rio Grande rules clarifies it better.

I haven't played this for many years so I will go with the people playing the RG edition.

Thread: Re: Pushing question

Thanks for the great discussion on my question. I have to say that the evidence seems to completely support the single push interpretation disallowing the chain reaction push. I know that that is how I will play from now on. I was taught the chain reaction push before the game was ever published in English and never read the rules translation. The chain reaction push, however, never felt right to me. If anyone ever decides to upload scans of the English rules book, I will print it out for future reference because the translations do not explicitly prohibit pushing a boat into a space occupied by another boat. Thanks again all!

SouthernMan wrote:
Have to disagree with both of you - the rules translation I downloaded from here about 5 years ago says:

Pushing Opponent's Steamers
Normally movement is across empty spaces. It is, however, allowed to push opponents' steamers to one side. Each push costs the pushing player one movement space. This point is used to move an opponent's steamer one space. The pushing steamer moves only one space less than the number showing on his speed wheel.
If a player pushes two steamers, he moves two spaces less than his current speed.

This is repeated in a rules document (also on BGG) submitted a few years later and reportedly from the Rio Grande edition.

And then I checked the scanned in Dutch rules pdf file (also here) and submitted text from the same paragraph into a language translation website and it seems to say exactly the same thing again:

Wil een speler in één beurt twee boten van tegenstanders wegduwen, zal zijn boot zodoende twee velden minder kunnen varen.
=>
A player in one turn wants push away two boats of antagonists, its boat thereby two fields less is able sail.

So, I vote YES to multiple pushing.

What you quote does not address chain reaction pushing at all. Multiple pushes is something entirely different.

A boat may directly push separate boats during the course of the same turn. That is what your quote is addressing. The later version here on BGG is also different from what you quote above. It says you "may push an opponent’s ship." Not the singular "an", and that it does not say "ships."

As noted in other posts, pushing a boat into another is expressly forbidden in the Rio Grande rules. So chain reaction pushes are illegal according to the rules.

Of course, you could house rule them in, but it would be a variant.

It doesn't say you can push multiple paddle-wheelers AT THE SAME TIME. And it does specifically say that you can't push a paddle-wheeler onto another paddle-wheeler.
