Thread: I AM NOT A CRIM....CULTIST!

Members of a small village are gathering at the town square only to find there is a cultist among them who worships CTHULHU. Who is it, who will be sacrificed next, no one but the seer knows, but who pray tell is the seer and who are the cultists? For if they don’t uncover who the cultists are soon, there will be no one left alive and Cthulhu will rise, bring the end of days.

The Goal:

Worshippers: Kill enough people without being discovered that the number of villagers equals the number of worshippers.

All non-worshippers: lynch all worshippers.

The Setup:
Pick a moderator. If there are less then 12 players, take out 1 worshipper card and 1 seer card, otherwise if you have 12 or more don’t take out any worshipper cards or seer cards, unless you want to. You can add in the Vigilante and protector cards if you want. (what the cards do I will get to in gameplay. Have the moderator shuffle all the cards together. Then pass them out to the players, these cards are secret and only the players may know what they are that receive them, except the moderator may know in advance, otherwise he or she will find out when the game starts any way. Once everyone has their cards and know their roles, the game begins.

The Gameplay:

The Gameplay works in stages. The stages are:

The order of B-E doesn’t matter as long as the people go to sleep before the others wake up as long as you know the roles of the people in advance, especially if you are playing with even number of players. D and E are only done if you add in the Vigilante and Protector cards, other wise they are skipped.

A) Everyone goes to sleep.
B) Worshippers wake up and then go back to sleep.
C) Seers wake up and then Seers go back to sleep.
D) Vigilante Wakes Up and then goes back to sleep.
E) Protector Wakes up and then goes back to sleep.
F) Everyone Wakes up.

A)	First thing the moderator does is says for everyone to go to sleep. Which means everyone closes their eyes until they are told to wake up.

B)	Moderator says out loud for all the Worshippers to wake up. The worshippers open their eyes and look around, if there are an odd number of players, no one is sacrificed the first night, otherwise, they point to 1 person to be sacrificed and the moderator nods or gives a non-verbal confirmation and again out loud says Worshippers go back to sleep. Once the Worshippers eyes are closed again, the Moderator moves on.

C)	The moderator says out loud for all the Seers to wake up. The seers open their eyes, if there is an odd number of players nothing happens the first night but if it is an even number, then the seer points to another player he or she thinks is a cultist and the moderator gives them a non-verbal confirmation. The moderator says out loud for all the Seers to go back to sleep and moves on once their eyes are closed.

D)	If the Vigilante card is in play, the moderator asks out loud for all Vigilantes to open their eyes. If there is an odd number of players nothing happens the first night, if there is an even number of players, then the Vigilante points to someone they think is a worshipper and want to kill. Then moderator gives a non-verbal confirmation and then out loud asks the Vigilantes to go back to sleep, once they have closed their eyes, the moderator will move on.

E)	If the Protector card is in play, the moderator asks out loud for all Protectors to wake up. The protector opens their eyes, if there is an odd number of players playing nothing happens the first night, otherwise if it is an even number, the Protector points to someone they want to protect, which makes it so that that person can’t be killed or sacrificed. The moderator then says out loud for the Protectors to go back to sleep and once their eyes are closed, the moderator moves on.

F)	Now once all the roles have awoken (except of course the villagers) and gone back to sleep, the moderator says out loud for everyone to wake up. At this point you let everyone know who was found dead, if one of the people was suppose to die but was protected by the protector, then do not announce them even if that means no one dies, the sacrificed person and the one the vigilante has killed, but do not need to say which was which. After the deaths are announce show the other players the cards of the people who were killed (you can not show the cards if you want to make the game more challenging and keep calling out roles even if those people are dead), let the villagers know that someone has to be lynched in retaliation and they need to choose who. At this point, all the players should discuss amongst them selves who they think the worshippers. Once some candidates are chosen, a consensus is made or after a certain amount of time, ask who they think are the worshippers, if they choose more then one, have a public vote and the person who has the most votes get lynched, you may show his or her card if you like or keep it mysterious. Check ending conditions, if one is met; the game ends and if none is met, then go back to A by having everyone go back to sleep.

END GAME:

The game ends as soon as all the worshippers are dead, in which case everyone but the worshippers wins or the amount of players left is equal to number of worshippers left, so if there are 2 worshippers, then the game ends when 4 players are alive (including the 2 worshippers), if there is only 1 alive, then the game ends when 2 players are alive (the worshipper and another player).

CONCLUSION:
The game is basically a re-themed game of Werewolf or Mafia, so if you don’t like Cthulhu or those two games, then this is not the game for you. I know there are some differences between the games but hasn’t played werewolf or mafia in a while so I don’t remember what the differences are. With that said, the game is very short and I had a lot of fun playing it. I personally like Werewolf a lot and love Cthulhu Mythos, so this was right up my alley. Playing it with a big group is a lot of fun and intense since there are so may more people to choose from and red herrings. But it is also a lot of fun to play with a smaller group. The smaller the group the quicker the game will play and more intense the discussion will be.

I highly recommend this game as a quick filler or a fun game to pull out at a party. It is also a great game to play as an ice breaker for a group, fun to play in a classroom, camp or any group outing. It is so simple to play and the art on the cards are really nice as well. Like werewolf you technically don’t need the cards to play but it makes it easier to keep track of who is who and the art is nice. With the price being 20 bucks possibly less at some stores, the question of whether it is worth buying is up to you, personally I think it is worth the price, the cards are nice stock and I like the artwork a lot. I am tempted to buy another set and play a 60 player version muahahahhahah.

Yes I do worship Cthulhu and I recommend you do the same by buying this game or you will be sacrificed.

Thread: Re: Why the low rankings?

Evidently it is mostly from people who don't like werewolf or don't like retheming, in my opinion you should only rate the game if you have played it. And if you rate it poor cause it is not werewolf and you wanted werewolf, well you should by werewolf, the game is not werewolf, but a retheming of werewolf, so naturally they will be some changes made. With that said, it is fine to rate it poor if you don't like the game and think werewolf is better, but not because you wanted werewolf and bought this.

Thread: Looked great at first.

I am not going to review the game play of this game. If you want to read a review of the gameplay head over to the "Are You a Werewolf Page". What I am going to do is go over what I like and don't like with this new retheme of Werewolf.

I was shopping in my FLGS today and found this and thought to myself that the game of werewolf can't get much better then a Cthulhu theme. Personally I still believe that, but I think that this version of that came up a little flat. The theme is great, but the production of this one just didn't pan out.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the box was the cards. They are beautiful with very nice art work. The art works very well with the theme, however the cards are very large measuring in at about 5.5" x 4". They are glossy and made with a pretty thick stock. The size will make them a little hard to shuffle, but they may be easier to keep up with after they have been delt out. I would have prefered them a little smaller, but this is really a minor gripe.

My big gripe is the cards that are included. The box promotes this as a game for 5 to 30 and yes the cards provide will let up to 30 play the game, but I wouldn't want to play this version with more then about 15-16 players. Why you ask? This version of the game only comes with two worshiper (werewolf) cards. And personally when I play werewolf and get up to about 17 players I like to throw in another wolf and when I get up to 30 I usually play with 4 wolves and 2 seers. Also, the game only comes with two other specialized rolls (besides worshiper and seer) and they are protector and vigilante and you get 2 of each. I would have rather seen 1 of each of these rolls in the game and then maybe a witch and a sorcerer. These rolls would fit into the theme (unlike cupid) and would have helped this game.

Pros for this version of the game:
the theme
the artwork
the card quality
Enough cards (overall) to play a 30 person game

Cons for this version of the game:
Only 2 Worshiper cards provided
fewer alternate rolls
oversized cards

I really like this theme and if I am playing a game of less then 16 players I would love to play this one. However once you get above 16 I will just pull out one of the other version of werewolf.

Mafia (that's the name I am familiar with) is a great game in a social setting, but why buy this or the werewolf pack? Why not just use a normal set of cards and say, "Kings are Mafias, Sevens are Doctors, etc?" Having special cards to assign roles is unnecessary in my opinion. I mean after that the game doesn't need any cards at all, it's a purely verbal game.

When I first saw this in a geeklist, I sat straight up in my chair. Then I clicked on the link and discovered it was nothing more than a re-themed "Are You a Werewolf?" And apparantly, it's going for something like 15 Euros! What's that break down to, a Euro a card? Jeez, give me a break.

That whole Werewolf game was fun for about 10 minutes. Yeah, if you've got 30 KIDS at a school or something, it might be interesting, but c'mon, why don't we all just get together and play 7UP or Duck, Duck, Goose?
