Thread: Compatability Available again as a Barnes & Noble Exclusive!

My wife and I discovered this game about a year ago while visiting some of her family in Oklahoma. We loved it and found it to be a great party game, better in some respects than even the great Apples to Apples (except the max player count is 6).
Upon returning home, we found the game difficult to find, and rather expensive when we did find it.
I was just about to purchase a used copy off ebay for $40+
when I wandered into Barnes & Nobles on a X-Mas shopping trip and spotted a box labeled Compatibility.
While the art was different I was excited to see that not only was it the same game I almost bought used off ebay, but it also retails at $24.99!

I would recommend this game to anyone who likes Apples to Apples.
It's very couple friendly and appeals to non-gamers as well.
Thread: Session Report

Got together with two other couples to play our first game of Compatibility.

Joe & Laura were clicking and were able to score 9 points on two different rounds (3 matches in proper rank order).

My wife and I didn't do so hot and ended up losing... we were able to match through several rounds, but weren't able to rank our matches correctly as often as the two other couples.

Christen and Jack ended up winning although we couldnt' finish the game sine the coffee shop was closing up for the night.

Pretty fun couples game... will probably get old with too many plays, but probably wouldn't mind playing again sometime in the future. Hopefully I can get everyone to play a meatier, non-party game next time.

Thread: User Review
Very straight forward couples game. The version we played allow 3-6 people to play. Each pair of partners have matching sets of cards with pictures, words or colors on them. On a turn a die is rolled and a category/theme is picked off of a shared group of category cards. Each couple must then pick and rank a group of cards in an attempt to match what they think their partner will pick. They then reveal their choices to see if they match up.

If you pick the same cards as your partner, you get two points for each match. And if you match cards and have them in the same rank order, you get 3 points for each match.

Very simple, but it can be very fun if played with the right group of couples. I'm glad our friends brought this one along as I had not heard about it and I was stressing trying to find a good 6-player to bring along. Anyway, I'm not much of a party game person but I really did enjoy this one. Not sure if it would last after a lot of playings, but overall a fun game and great for playing with old friends or new.

Thread: User Review

When you think of the term "party game", do you think of Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Cranium, Poker, or Compatibility? The above question is a prefect example of the type of thing you'll need to do in Compatibility.

Compatibilty is a game for 3-4 players, depending on which mode of play you choose. The basic object remains the same in all of the modes: choose a series of cards that you think your partner (or the "matcher") will choose based on the topic that is picked at the start of the round, and place them in order of preference. Once everyone has done so, reveal your cards and see how they match up! You score 3 points for a direct match (a match of the same card in the same spot) and 2 points for an indirect match (a match of the same card in a different spot). The farther you move along the board the less chances you get to match your partner.

While you can play this game with up to 8 players, the catch is you have to buy the same game twice so that you have one deck of cards for each player. Now this wouldn't be so bad except for the fact that the game just seems to rot away after a few plays. As much as players would hope for an expansion to the game, it never comes. All we get are new versions of the same game.

Not to say the game is bad, it just seems to get repetitive. For some this is okay, the basic idea of the game is simple enough and turns out to be a good laugh when two partners are arguing over why the one chose a Smiley Face and the other chose blueberries.

This leads right into my next complaint. Who drew these cards anyway, a 3 year old? The pictures look like (honestly) they were drawn with Crayola crayons. The actual photographs of things don't look too good, and there are even word cards because they either couldn't find a picture of it or just wanted to hustle to finish the game (seriously, they couldn't get a picture card for money?). This isn't a huge complaint, but it just removes from the quality of the game.

All in all this game is a great party game, and it's more fun when you switch partners each game. After a while players resort to cheating (picking the same cards on every question), which is really too bad because the game is pretty fun. I would like to see an expansion come out for this game in the future (NOT a new version of the same game) and then maybe this would be the ultimate party game.

Compatibility earns a solid 9 out of 10 with just a few minimal complaints.
