Thread: Re: Hive and the importance of nice components

Definitely. For me, aesthetics greatly amplify the experience of playing an abstract game. Bakelite Hive is awesome. I also just picked up Yinsh - the quality is there as well, and really enhances the game. And it doesn't take the extravagance and expense you see in chess boards and go sets to attain this quality.

Thread: Re: Hive and the importance of nice components

This is very true. Look at Lines of Action. It could be played with a checkers board and pieces, but When Abacus (or its predecessor?) published it, they made a cloth board, and square pieces with a neat little design on them. Brilliant. It serves to get people to appreciate that it's very much a novel game, not just something weird you can do with a checkers set.

Thread: extra black beetle

I don't mean a beetle that is more black than any other beetles, but "extra" in terms of beyond what is called for in the game.

I have one.

For sale or trade.

Too odd to try and list in the normal channels.
