Thread: One quick game afore ye go...

So, we'd just played Seafarers of Catan, which I'd won (natch...), and I was in the mood for more. Around the dinner/gaming table was Teresa, Jan, Melvyn and myself.

"Hey, lets play a quick game of Von 0 Auf 100 (or Go 0 to 100), before you hit the road.", I said. And they were more than happy to.

I set the random track up for our first ever game amidst questions of, "So why are there six cars?", "What are these car tiles for?", etc. Then I finally succumbed and explained all the rules in just a few minutes - that's all it takes. I won't explain all here (read my review or check out the rules from the file section), but the main 'thing' about the game is that you only know your own car colour, and nobody elses.

Teresa, (by dint of making the best pretend car engine noises), was elected to go first, and so started a tentative few opening rounds of number placing to advance the cars down the track.

As is the nature of the game all were trying to assess who was the owner of each car, and not let on the colour of our own. So, it was quite typical to hear remarks such as, "oh well I haven't put the tile on yellow yet, so I suppose I could put it there..." and other such fluff.

After six or so rounds Teresa was convinced she had sussed everybodies car colour. So was Melvyn. Jan was tight lipped, and I confess I had absolutley no idea. I checked my licence again... Blue, that's it... the one languishing in sixth place currently on an oil spill. Damn!

The first car past the post was white (Teresa's), followed by Melvyn
(Black), then myself (Blue), and lastly then Jan (Green).

A really good fun end to the night (took about 10 mins) - we very nearly played another round, but it was just getting too late. I think we might open with this next time.

Thread: Von 0 auf 100 or Go 0 to 100, a light review

HABA games are 'childrens' games, generally speaking.

But I've been impressed with the quality of components and interesting mechanics that are employed on several of them. This means they can be used as fillers for us 'grown-up' gamers. The mechanic is what interested me in this particular game. There is a very simple yet clever thing at work here... read on to find out how it plays.

'Von 0 auf 100' or 'Go 0 to 100' is a game lightly themed for racing cars around a track.

The components are of excellent quality - six wooden cars, six 'drivers licence' tokens, and six seperate cards to represent the cars. You also have one game-round token, and five movement tokens that are labelled one to five, and lastly there are 36 road tiles that can be laid in random fashion to represent a track for the race.

These road tiles have a curve on one side and a straight on the other, so a huge variety of tracks can be built. Really though the shape of the track is purely asthetic and has no bearing on gameplay.

At the beginning of the game you each take a 'drivers licence' which will denote the colour of your race car. This is done secretly, so you should not know the colour of your opponents cars.

The first player in a round will pick up the movement token '1' and place it on a card of their choosing, representing a certain colour of race car, and indicating that it will move just one place forward. The second player places the '2' token, etc. up to the fifth token. Then those cars are moved by the amount indicated by the tokens. The sixth car does not move.

And so a great game of bluff ensues.

Playing with my 5 year old daughter - her face was a picture when she was secretly placing the movement tokens - hiding from me (or trying to) her intent to move forward her own car by a majority, or another car by much less.

I would recommend this game for children of 5 and up, or else as a filler game for older chldren, and adults that are open minded (to playing 'childrens' games).
