Thread: First try at RSS/CWBS, one question

South Mountain is my first attempt at this series and after reading through the rules and setting up I have just one initial question:

1 - What is the Casualty Track on the two player aid cards used for? Losses are marked on the units and stragglers on the brigade rosters (I think), and since there are no VP awards for total casualties (only for wrecked or eliminated units) I don't see what you do with this track.

(I was going to post some questions about the extra counters included, but I see the errata on the MMP web site explains them nicely.)

I'm really looking forward to giving this game (and the series) a try. I just finished reading the South Mountain chapter of Sears' Landscape Turned Red, so I'm especially anxious to play this battle.

Thanks,
Brian

Thread: South Mountain

South Mountain

I have played 3 turns so far, due to a lot of "remembering CWBS and then getting used to RSS" rules.

I'd like to thank whoever is responsible for the roster sheet at the Gamer's Archive. It is really great. It will make regimental loss tracking very easy, as well as ARTY ammo consumption.

I am using the detailed ammo rules, and I must say that at South Mountain, they make you really think about using ARTY! With only one wagon, and two commands to supply that are separated by a road that had some elevation changes, its a challenge to supply them. I can't imagine what the Reb will do later in the game when the action heats up on Fox's and Turner's Gap. Right now I plan to use the seemingly abundant Army ARTY to have extra batteries. Essentially, one will be in reserve, and when the other is dry, they'll swap.

I do like the resupply rules, but think that the battery OUGHT to move back a hex. So that's what I will do.

The slope rules and RSS stacking make movement into position rather slow. So the only action has been that Lane's ARTY took out a gun of the ARTY supporting Pleasanton. I expect it will take a turn or two more (maybe 3) to get the Union attack on Fox's gap going.

DH Hill is trying to decide if he should send his "extra" brigade to help at Fox or not. As his current orders have a detached brigade at Fox, I think the one still climbing the road needs to go to Turners, unless DH gets initiative.

We will see
Thread: South Mountain at Winter Offensive...

Had a great game of South Mountain at Winter Offensive with Mark van Roekel. I hope Mark gives the Blue Bellie perspective...I was the secesh....

We played till about 2:30pm or so (the game is a one day affair).

All of the action over this period is at Fox's Gap...the little bru-ha-ha at Turner's gap is the main attraction in the latter afternoon and we didn't get there...

A division of Reno's 9th Corps started its march to Fox's gap at 9am. I threw a few independent units up front to slow them down as Garland's brigade rushed into position.

Here they come!

Garland gets smacked hard and is hanging by a thread when DH Hill finally gets his act in gear and sends over another brigade (Colquit) to help out. Reno, seeing the Rebs, actually loses his confidence for about an hour and stops his attack...but it is just a brief respite.

More of 9th corps comes on (lead by Christ...how can you stand against Christ?) and Reno is just too strong...desperate pleas for more troops falls on deaf ears and Garland, with all of his brigades wrecked, finally pulls off the line at around 10:30 or so...Colquit struggles on alone for a little while longer...but no reinforcements come...

At last, with no hope, the Brigade calls an emergency retreat and the 9th Corps stands victorious at Fox's Gap.

Immediately hearing that the Gap had fallen, DH finally gets going and sends two brigades to help...Ripley and Rodes start moving quickly to the now fallen gap...

Garland, now rested and recovered, joins in and three brigades hit 9th corps as she is rather confidentally deploying to secure her hard fought objective...

With a yip-yip-yip...like thunder, the Union line is hit...limbered artillery in the front and troops out of position, and, like frightened school girls, the Union is routed off the gap...

Lots of fun here folks and I hope Mark enjoyed himself as well...
Thread: Re: Playtest of South Mountain December 2006

Peter is correct...completely different game system at a different scale...

The game is on prepub right now and is doing well. I encourage you to consider prepubbing the game from MMP so we can all play it (and I don't have to play with not so easy to read printed at home counters)...

The GCACW system is more "operational" in scope. You fight entire campaigns with divisions. This is much smaller in scale and you fight with regiments instead...to put it in reference, this entire game would be one die roll in "Here Come the Rebels" GCACW game.

Happy to answer any questions about the game you might have. This game uses what is called the "orders system" in which players actually write out on a piece of paper what the orders for the commanders are...fun system that is really open ended and offers a somewhat unique feel to gaming.

Adam

Moves along right smartly...

Game starts with Garland's Brigade moving to cover Fox's Gap and the rest of DH Hill's division moving to cover Turner's Gap and one of the main approaches to the Turner's Gap (although there are two other approaches that are left unguarded...

The Union starts with only Pleasanton's Cav Brigade covering the center (dark bluebellies in the pic to the lower right) at a discrete distance and Reno's 9th Corps entering as play begins.

Here is the first pic. Just prior to this, Reno has run up some arty to interfere with Garland's deployment and has been routed away...the first of Reno's infantry has made contact with Garland...

After about 30 minutes of fighting, Reno develops cold feet and stops the attack (rolled a 2 on corps stoppage)...Nick Richardson, playing the Rebs, doesn't help the Union cause by some hot rolling (64 on the morale again?)...

Here is Reno after pulling back to rethink this attack....

Suddenly inspired again after a 45 minute wait, Reno decides it wasn't that bad and back he goes. Perhaps the appearance of Christ's Brigade helps...not a fool to irony, Christ takes the lead and the attack goes back in...

This time, Rebel luck runs cold and after 30 minutes or so, Garland falls back...flanked and outnumbered, there is little option. Fox's gap is now part of the Union again.

Reno sits back and enjoys the day...satisfied from a job well done...he would not get initiative again and new orders from Mac would not arrive before we stopped play....

As Reno sits and basks in the sun, 1st Corps moves up and starts its fight toward's Turner's gap. I had other plans for 2 of the brigades so the attack moved slowly...but my D4 orders sat in delay for 45 minutes and counting...

This was what things were as we ended play...the Rebs have started streaming on and have some intentions of retaking Fox's Gap...and have made the approach to Turner's gap very strong...

The Union has moved up the Iron Brigade to cover the center and any frisky moves by the Rebs in the center...it would have been tight at the end...
