Thread: Pole Position Review

This is a review of Pole Position, a card-driven game for 2-4 players. It is a simple race game with additions of a moveable track and moveable roadblocks - "rookie drivers."

Componenets:
Cardboard bi-fold board, cardboard "racecars" placed on plastic holders. Cards printed on a medium cardstock. Two moveable track pieces printed on thin cardboard. 4 rubber "bumpers" are attached to the board (post purchase) to help with "track switching." The artwork is functional. Overall the components are mediocre - not bad, but they don't add anything to the game.

Rules:
The rules are easy to understand and grasp. They are printed on the inside of the box on the "gameboard support" piece of inside packaging.

Gameplay:
The play isn't as bad as you might think it would be. The players draw cards and move around the track according to the instructions on the card. The player must use all of their move, i.e. if it says "Move 3 spaces" the player must move three spaces, even if blocked from going forward - the player must move side-to-side. This is very important and very interesting, especially with the two items that make this game interesting - "track switching" and "rookie drivers."

Some card have instructions to move the "straight away" parts of the track so that the spaces on this part of the race track do not line up with the turns - making it possible to strand a player on a turn - since changing lanes on turn is forbidden. This lead to great tactical play and can help to prevent "run away" wins.

Also, some cards allow you to place "rookie drivers" onto the track. These cars do not move and can be used as roadblocks against other players. Again, this promotes tactical decision making and can help keep the game close.

Overall:
This game is light, but fun. It is easily played by children of all ages. Young children will enjoy racing around the board, then (as they get older/wiser) they will enjoy the complexities provided by "switching track" and placing "rookie drivers." I would recommend picking it up at garage sales, flea markets, etc.
