Thread: Re: Points?

It's around just over 600 points of Dwarfs and just under 600 points of Goblins.

Note that this excludes magical items, but those are not really presented in the rulebook inclded in the box but in the seperate armybooks which detail the different armies.

yeancientone wrote:
It's a great set, but note that the rulebook is minus the background and various other extra stuff you get in the hardback edition. Still, this is a fantastic starter set.

Yeah. Its a RULEBOOK. There is SO much fluff in the 6th edition, if you are looking for fluff, get it cheap on eBay. I didn't really mention it, since this review comes from my own personal opinion, of which I dislike the 200 pages of Warhammer Fluff in the "big red book" rulebooks.

Thread: Your Warhammer "Bang for the Buck"

I feel remiss being the game submitter and not writing a review, but I guess its because I don't own the actual set, just my friends who used it to start new armies.

I am an avid player of the game, and I highly enjoy it, despite its flaws. And yes, there are flaws. But this is not a review of the system, its a review of this boxed set, and the figures included. On to the review!

Overview

The premise of the game is similar to the Warhammer 40K Battle For Macragge set: It introduces the game to beginners with 2 mostly evenly matched armies. Warhammer Fantasy battle has had many boxed sets, the last being 6th edition, but none of them really stack up to Battle For Skull Pass. Before, for about 75 bucks, you got 2 similarly sized armies, some templates, dice, and a basic (RE: Incomplete) rulebook.

In Battle for Skull Pass (BfSP), you get 2 armies, the dice, and best of all, THE COMPLETE RULEBOOK, for a much cheaper price, at around 45 bucks.

The rulebook is small, about the size of a small novel, and doesn't have all the backstory, but it syncs up completely with the full size rules, and has every rule you will ever need to know, which is a HUGE bonus. A++++++++ for Games Workshop including it.

Figures

I have heard grumblings about these figures, mainly from Warhammer vets, about them not being detailed enough, but the truth is, this is a beginner set, to introduce people not only to the gaming aspect, but to the painting aspect also. All of the models are one piece molds, with slot bases to fit in, and rank up really nicely. You also don't get jipped on the model selection: Goblins get decent heroes, masses of Night Goblins, a troll and even the really cool Spider Riders (my favorites). The Dwarves get a couple heroes themselves, a wide selection of warriors, gunners, and miners, and even a cannon! For the price, the figure selection just can't be beat. The detail question is a valid one, and the figure detail is simple at best, but really, as I said, this is completely understandable, and a good move on GWs part. You also get an assortment of scenery bits, with a big Goblin Effegy pile, to a tied of Dwarf Slayer, and some other stuff.

Rules

I know I said I wasn't going over the ruleset, and I'm not, just the rules included. Along with the great pocket sized full rulebook, you get some scenarios. I haven't tried these, but from my friends mouths, they said they were pretty cool. The quality of the rulebook is hit or miss, I personally don't need a hardcover rulebook, but some people will want to get the hardcover, and lose the pocket book included, which is perfectly fine. But personally, I have enough fluff in the 6th edition rules that will never get read, that I don't really need another 200 pages of it.

Overall Quality

As I said in the title, this is the Bang for the Buck set for me. If I was going to start and Orcs and Goblins, or Dwarf army, or just jump into the hobby, this is the PERFECT set, and certainly a bargain for what is included. The sheer quality of the set compared to previous editions is astounding. Considering that I started in 4th or 5th, and my first starter set included a couple dinky units of KNights and archers, and like 18 lizardmen, this is just great.

Definitely a solid release by the sometimes morally impaired Games Workshop, a diamond in the rough.
