Thread: "I'm the sole survivor!"

If that line brings back memories of a cheesy commercial from the seventies, you remember Stay Alive.

Lately, I've been thinking about all the weird "big chunk of plastic" games we used to play when I was a kid. You know the ones: those Milton Bradley games that revolved around a big, gimmicky plastic board that required a huge box to store it in. Stay Alive is like that.

Anyway, this particular big plastic board was a grid with holes in it. There are sliders that also go across the grid that also have holes randomly placed in them too. If both sliders on a particular intersection have the holes line up, a marble would fall through. The marbles are the players' pawns. Get the picture? Each player is trying to "kill" the other players' marbles by moving the sliders one notch at a time until you can get them to fall through the holes. Since you don't see where the lower sliders' holes are, that makes it a little more guesswork.

This was a fun kids' game that we enjoyed quite a bit while we were young. A good game for kids, but the rating I gave it on BGG reflects the fact that I'm really not interested in playing it now. Stay Alive is one of those games that shows up in thrift stores quite a bit, so if you want to give it a try, you sure can. (There's also a republished "travel version" that I suppose you can play on the beach like the Stay Alive Kid did so many years ago...)

Thread: User Review

If you lived in the 1970's, you probably caught the commercial for this game on Television at least once. Who couldn’t forget that creepy kid in the Gilligan hat on the beach. "I'm the sole survivor!" he muttered at the camera as the shot pulls back to reveal him all alone. . . the sole survivor!

So, the commercial was memorable - but how is the game? Well, clearly it's a children's game, and being a child in the 70s means that I'm well outside the demographic in the 00's. However, much to my surprise, there's substance to hold the attention of adults. One of the players, a self proclaimed genius who only likes Thinking Games(tm), even had a good time.

It's a pretty simple concept: pull levers and hope that you drop the other players marble. White levers control the top layer (where you can see the holes) while the orange levels control the bottom (where you CAN'T see the holes). Despite the simplicity, there's a certain strategy that goes into the game. Do you defend your marbles or go on the attack and try and drop someone else? How close were you paying attention to the lower orange slide? Despite the quick game play, it can be quite deep. Well - as deep as Stay Alive can get.

Me and my 3 friends played several rounds one evening - the game play is very fast - and we all had a ball. Since you cant get the game retail anymore, finding it will be hard. However, the odds of it being cheap are quite good. I bagged my copy for 2 bucks at a thrift.

For that kind of money, you cant beat this game with a stick!

(And the commercial was cool too!)
