I like the storage idea - especially using cards.

I'd like to try out a version where you can store resources - and add in trading also. Its the main piece missing for me in this interesting 2 player adaptation. I also use the robber as posted in other variants.

I'd like to know what others think of adding in some trading here!

Thread: Catan Dice - Multiplayer Solitaire

The Components:
* 6 dice, 6 sided, each with sides: Wood, Wheat, Sheep, Ore, Gold, Brick
* Score Pad
* Rules insert

Play:
On your turn, roll the dice, hoping for one or more of the four combinations. You may reroll some or all of the dice in two successive rerolls. If you manage to obtain a scoring combination, and are allowed to build that item, you may score the points indicated in the item. If you failed to achieve any items you can score, you lose 2 points.

The key difference from feeling like Yahtzee is that you have a limitation that changes during play as to which combinations score. ALso, the more of a given type you've scored, the more they are worth.

The required resources are the norm for Catan:
Road: Brick and Wood. Always 1 point.
Knight: Sheep, Ore, and Wheat. progressive: 1,2,3,4,5, 6 points
Settlement: Wood, Wheat, Sheep, Brick. progressive: 3,4,5,7,9,11 points
City: 3 ore, 2 wheat. progressive: 7, 12, 20, 30 points

The lack of positioning choice is minor; it does detract slightly from the Catan feel, but is no more restrictive than Catan Kartenspiel.
Knights are not tied to road, but settlements and cities are.

Only certain combinations are possible:
1 road *
2 roads **
3 roads ****
1 Knight **
2 Knights ****
1 Knight and 1 Road ***
1 settlement **
1 Settlement and 1 Road ****
1 City ***

* is easy, **** is rather hard.

And you might not be able to score combinations due to not having roads to an unscored space.

Multiple Players:
Really, any number can play, but downtime is the issue. There is no player interaction, so downtime is the only real issue. There is no difference between playing solitaire and playing an opponent except for waiting for their turn, and kibbutzing.

Value for Money:
As a solitaire game, yes. As a component set for the official alternate version, yes. For multiple players, no. It's a nice time waster for 1 or 2, but more than that, and downtime becomes an issue.

The score pad, about 60 sheets, is double sided, and so you get two plays per sheet. It stands up well to erasure, and so reuse is possible.

A mistake?
Klaus Teuber, the designer, states on his website that he submitted two designs, and Kosmos published only one.

I feel Kosmos blew it.

Personally, I think BOTH should have been in the box; the alternate rules are posted on Herr Teuber's website, and actually have limited (yet still multiplayer solitaire) interaction, by virtue of it being a race to hit a specific score; further, it uses standard Settlers scoring.

Printing the second rules sheet, and an additional pad, probaby would have driven the cost from $12 to $15, but it would have been worth it.

Fun Factor:
It's enjoyable. It's not incredible, but it is a good adaptation for a solitaire Catan game.

Integration Factor:
One can easily integrate the dice into Settlers, replacing the normal process... but then one loses the robber except by army cards.

One can use settler's bits on the maps, but it's not a sure thing:
Settlers has 3 knights vs Dice's 6
Settlers has 15 roads vs Dice's 17
Settlers has 5 settlements vs Dice's 6
Both have 4 cities.

Variants:
It's easy enough to come up with variants. 3 are present on the site already.
I will add one, too:
Storage.
When you have rolled 3 identical resources, you may store 1 resource of that type; draw a circle outside the hexagon of that type. In a later turn, you may cross off that circle to add one resource of that type. Stored resources are worth no points, and storing does not prevent losing points for not having scored. (If you have settlers handy, ou may draw a resource card instead, which is more visually appealing.

Bottom Line: No player interaction, but still enjoyable for passing time. 6.5/10

www.boardgamenews.com just posted a news item about a different game playable with these dice.
The idea was one of two that Klaus Teuber submitted to Kosmos and the published version was chosen. Not so sure about the simultaneous roll though. What made that work in the original Catan is that not everybody cashes in with each roll. Maybe, players go around rolling...then they can trade what they rolled to other players? I dunno.

I like how your fix for downtime is "Play another game at the same time"

You made the unfortunate mistake of taking me seriously.

I take humor seriously. I dunno.

I like how your fix for downtime is "Play another game at the same time"

You made the unfortunate mistake of taking me seriously.

Thread: Six Dice, One Scorepad, No Pencil: Sheep Flavored Yahtzee.

Introduction

The Settlers of Catan is probably the most successful chain of euro-style board games in history. The prolific series includes the original Settlers of Catan, a highly-rated 2-player card game, a whole host of expansions (Seafarers, Cities and Knights) and 5-6 player expansions for those expansions, and many variants on the original game(Settlers of Canaan), or standalone games with the same theme (Candamir, the First Settlers) or similar mechanics (Starfarers of Catan, Starship Catan.)

The newest entry into this arena is the Catan Dice Game, designed by Klaus Teuber and published by Mayfair. Following the recent surge of dice games that have come out recently, the Catan Dice game struck me as a game that might be very interesting. I’d had a good experience with a dice-based euro recently with Airships, and I’m a fan of Settlers of Catan itself, so when I saw it at the game shop, I snagged it.

Bits

Catan Dice Game comes in a smallish red-colored box resembling the box for the new edition of The Settlers of Catan. Inside the box, is a pad of paper and 6 dice, and a set of rules.

That’s it. No, really. There is nothing else. Not even a pencil! (Not in the Mayfair release...apparently the german Kosmos version has a pencil!) Anyway, the box is fairly sturdy and nicely made. The dice are very nice, with resources on each side, in color, including metallic gold. The pad contains a thousand million copies (okay, sixty copies) of the player sheet for Catan Dice Game. All in all, sparse, but well done.

Resource Dice, by samoan_jo

Mayfair box components, by pezpimp. As you can see...not much to it.

Player pad, by samoan_jo. As you can see, nicely language independent. This is the German version, but US versions are identical.

Gameplay

Unfortunately, things are a bit downhill from here. Each player takes a player sheet, someone finds a pencil or pen or something somewhere, and the youngest player begins.

Did you know that Catan is not one island? It is in fact, 1-4 separate, smaller islands, or so the sheets would have you believe.

On your turn, you try to build a network on your private island. You have a starting road, and you work out from there. As in the original game, different resources buy differen’t things. Cities cost wheat and ore, Settlements cost wheat/sheep/brick/lumber, roads cost road/lumber and so on. You can also spend sheep/ore/grain and buy a Knight, which will give you one specific resource later in the game when you really need it.

There is a series of roads that can be built, connected to settlements and cities. Each turn (there are 15 turns) you roll the dice up to 3 times. You can save or re-roll any of the 6 dice each time. After your last roll (usually third, but you can stop at one or two) you add up any resources you rolled to make things, and you note them on your sheet; any Gold rolled can be used 2:1 as any resource.

Each thing (road, city, settlement) has points noted on it on your sheet, and you cross that thing off, note the points in the score box for that turn on your score sheet and pass the dice. You may only build things you are connected to, and each successive city or settlement around the board is worth more points. When building settlements or cities, you build the smallest point value first before you are allowed to build the next one, even if you’re connected by road to it.

After 15 rounds you total your score. High score wins.

"The Rolling Stones", by samoan_jo. This is basically all you do all game. Note pencil, not included in Mayfair edition.

My Thoughts

If it isn’t already obvious, I’m a bit disappointed by this game. You basically roll and roll, building what you can with what you got. Yes, you can go for something and roll the dice trying for something specific, but if it doesn’t pan out you can end up wasting a turn. It’s a very opportunistic building system.

It wouldn’t be quite as bad if you could build out of order….circumnavigate the Island trying to get the big points before grabbing after the smaller stuff again. Really…there is almost no strategy to it at all. Even with Knights, you have to build those in a specific order, so you can’t even choose which one to make if you roll for one.

As I said, I’m a fan of the original Settlers of Catan. Player interaction. Trading. Positioning. These are but a few elements in the Settlers of Catan that the Catan Dice Game does not have. It’s basically four solitaire games. You cannot trade resources (except for the Gold and Knights), you don’t move a robber or steal anything, you don’t even play on the same board. Each player is completely isolated.

What I loved about the original Settlers was that it has high player interaction. The only thing the Catan Dice Game borrows from the board game is the theme. In practically every other way, it couldn’t be more different.

You have got to be friggin' kidding me.

Oh Sh...eep! Image by Hagakurrre

Pros and Cons

 Nice components, especially the dice
 Compact and portable
 Easy to learn

 Are pencils seriously that expensive?
NO, and I mean NO interaction or trading at all.
 Very little strategy
 No sheep grinder!

Conclusions

Really, the Catan Dice Game is disappointing. It retains none of the good elements of the Settlers of Catan, and is not even a very good game in its own right, like Starship Catan, Candamir, or even the Catan Card Game. The Catan Dice Game is proof to me that Catan has jumped the shark; it’s no longer about a group of games that share common attributes, it’s about branding anything you can find with the Catan logo to get it to sell.

How does it compare to Yahtzee, another zero-interaction dice game? Well, honestly, I think Yahtzee offers more tense, compelling decisions than Catan Dice Game does. In Yahtzee, each roll has to be counted, but can be counted for whatever you like. It’s a system where you have to figure out where to take your losses and where to count your wins. Catan Dice doesn’t even really offer that. If the dice don’t give you what you need, there’s no saving it or fussing with alternatives, or even the fun of trying to limit the damage it does. You’re just stuck. I prefer Yahtzee, in all honesty.

Catan Dice Game, for me, is a disappointment; not painful or awful, just a disappointment. I was expecting something truly clever here, and got yahtzee with sheep. That said, if you have a hankering for a catan-themed dice game to play alone on the train, or if you’re a Catan completist, you may find something here you like. I can image one or two enterprising game designers can find some way to work the resource dice into the boardgame, as well. But, if you’re looking for a portable, quick version of the boardgame experience, this isn’t it. Not by a mile.

Overall, I'll play it, but not before I play almost anything else. I rate the Catan Dice Game a 5 out of 10.

Nice video review too. One doesn't see too much of the latter even these days.

Paraphrasing: "knight used as a free stone/ore resource". Needs more precision. This implies that whatever you roll, the knight gives you one extra resource of that type. I would've worded it as "the knight allows you to take one die and turn it into the stone/ore (or whatever resource the knight gives you)". The idea is, no matter how many knights you use in a single turn, you will ONLY be able to build with 6 resources.

I do regret buying this game, but I least I got it cheap. As a bonus, one group who likes this game is the group where one person didn't like Settlers Of Catan, and the others were either OK or "meh" about it. Being that this game plays more like Yahtzee or other such dice game, of course they'll like it. It's a dice game with the SoC theme soooo pasted on

You also failed to notice that there are 96 resources in the game. Each knight built provides you with a resource. This makes it possible to, for instance, build at least one road on the same turn where you build a city, three times.

A knight allows you to change one of your six resources in a turn... not add a seventh. So you could not build a road and a city in the same turn.

You can't spend more than 6 resources in a turn. When using knights you have to turn 1 die to the resource that knight provides so there are always 6 to use.

Well, if nothing else, this indirectly answered my question, which was "how did I do?" I just cracked the game this evening and thought I'd give it a solo run to get a feel for it. Scored an 89, and was really curious if that was a good score or not. Now I know. BTW, people seem to keep ignoring the tremendous usefulness of those 6 knights in providing resources. Among other things, those 6 free resources make possible things like city/road, or settlement/knight, for much increased efficiency (or did I play it wrong and you can't spend more than 6 even when cashing in knights?)

Since building a city costs 5 of your 6 resources, and nothing costs 1 resource, it is impossible to have a perfect game (ie. use every die as 1 resource) and build all the cities. If you build a city, that's all you do that turn.

You also failed to notice that there are 96 resources in the game. Each knight built provides you with a resource.
While Greg is right that there are other, better dice games out there, if you're starting from a Yahtzee standpoint, this game is more interesting and fun than Yahtzee, but about as simple. So if you have someone who loves Yahtzee, have them give this a try instead.

those short golf pencils or those you find at IKEAs are ideal. Go buy some furniture! Otherwise, some folks have suggested printing out a color copy, laminating it, and then using a dry erase marker to allow reuse of the same sheets over and over again. Bonus is you may be able to get high on the fumes

The dice game can be easily played everywhere as you can use the game box lid to roll the dice into. It's a fun game, although I doubt I would play it ever for hours. From me you'll get a clear recommendation.

If you are a fan of Settlers you might concider to check the Catan Travel edition. This is also easily playable everywhere. We often play it in train. Of course, by default this game is for 3-4 players, but using the official 2p variant you can play it with 2 as well and it's a lot of fun.

Another good dice game that can be used on journeys is Monopoly Express. It's also playable everywhere.

For both, Catan Dice Game and Monopoly Express, don't forget your biro as you need something to write with.

If you're into dice game, particularily Yahtzee as what many refer Catan Dice Game as being similar to, then it could last you a while. For a 20 hour plane ride, minus time for sleeping, eating, and doing other stuff.... it may be a stretch. For me, it may last about an hour or two, but that's it. FYI, I've played Settlers Of Catan and this game, but never Yahtzee. I guess I'm the kind of person who's only into dice game for short bursts at a time.

Other notes....
-may wanna get a dice tray.... or anythign to keep the dice from falling on the floor. It'll likely be a pain in the neck to try to recover one or 2 dice that fall on the floor to the seat in front or behind you in cramped coach seats. If you're doing this often, it may get too disruptive towards other passengers.
-Speaking of which, I dunno, but the constant sound of dice rolling may bother nearby passengers
