Thread: Fishermen Boot Question

When you draw the boo token, I understand that you can give it to another player with equal or higher victory points. Now, is that person stuck with the boot for the rest of the game or is s/he able to give it away later to someone else with equal or higher victory points?

Thread: Old Catan- New Expansion?

Hey guys and gals,

I have the version of Catan where the hexes are still basic looking and the sea hexes surround the board. However, I just picked up this version and its telling me to replace the sea frame pieces....which I never got because this is an older version. Anyone know what to do in this situation?

Your review talked me out of buying it. I already own the fisherman expansion, event cards and river expansions and have access via the geek to the rules for the harbormaster.

I was tempted by the large scenarios but it seems that the highlight of this version is what I already own.

Bob

You'll have to make up rules for yourself. The proposed C&K 2-player scenario is also a fan-made scenario (I was involved in its development as well). I don't remember, but I guess we didn't find a satisfying solution for Seafarers. Also, the problem with Seafarers is there are plenties of individual scenarios which all would need individual ruling...

Thread: Re: Worth getting if you only for 2 player games?

Actually, the scenarios included are 3-4 player. The opening section abuout general variants for settlers does include a 2 player variant, but it's not specifically designed to work with the scenarios included but it's a general variant. And I still don't think settlers should be played with only 2 players.

Thread: Worth getting if you only for 2 player games?

With Christmas coming up, I am strugging with deciding on whether to purchase this one. Many of the scenarios look fun but I rarely play with more then 2 and this would be bought almost exclusively for playing with my girfriend.

Now, I am aware of the 2 player rules which I find only so so with the base game. I guess my question comes down to this: Are the scenarios included enjoyable with only 2 people?

Know this is a matter of opinion and I would appreciate any opinions out there.

Thanks,

Bob

Thread: Re: Fishermen questions sent to rulesguru@mayfairgames.com

Special Preparation, 4th bullet point: do you also get a fish token if your second settlement is placed by the lake (i.e. does it count as a ‘fishing ground tile’)?
Yes. Although it is not stated directly, the lake is a fishing ground.

May the Robber be placed on the lake to prevent the acquisition of fish tokens?
Yes, the German rules allow for this but they are not stated in the English rules. The Robber may not be placed on a sea fishing ground.

When may the Fish Card actions be performed:
- at any time in your turn, even before rolling the dice/drawing the event card?
- only during trading or building?
During your building and trading phase.

If more than one player gets fish tokens that turn, who pulls first (I am guessing it starts with the current player and proceeds clockwise)?
Yes, as you say.

These two points in the rule seem to conflict:
- If there are not enough fish tokens to fulfill everyone’s production, no one receives any fish tokens that turn.
- When the last face-down fish token is drawn, turn over all the used fish tokens and mix them up again to form a new supply.
So, the only way they wouldn’t conflict is if the remaining number of fish tokens exactly matches everyone’s production for that turn; is this so or do you hand out what is there and then make up the rest from the new supply?
If there are not enough, no one collects fish tokens and the tokens are reshuffled and placed back in a pile, bag, whatever. Therefore, if (1, from above), then (2, from above).

Does the Epidemic event card cut fish production for a city (just checking, because the rules seem pretty clear that Epidemics only effect resources/commodities and fish are not a resource)?
No, it only affects resources and commodities, not items collected from other sources.

May the 5 fish free road be used to repair the Earthquake event?
Yes, repairing a road is rebuilding a road, therefore it is building a road (without placing one).

If combined with Cities & Knights, may seven fish be traded in for a Progress Card from any of the three stacks?
In lieu of Development cards, Progress cards may be traded for and you can chose from any stack.

I hope that helps!

I've sent this to the rulesguru@mayfiar.com:

Catan for Two. Replenishing Trade Tokens. Last sentence of the first bullet point reads, ‘(at least 3) face-up Knight Cards takes the Longest Road card.’ I assume that it is actually supposed to be the Largest Army card, yes?

Thread: Event Card questions sent to rulesguru@mayfairgames.com

Earthquake Event Card: may you use one of the two roads from a Roadbuilding development card to repair a sideways road? Based on my reading of the rule, I think the answer is ‘no’ as it clearly states that you need one lumber and one brick, but that is also the same combination as a road build.

Earthquake Event Card: can a player have more than one sideways road because it was not repaired before Earthquake was drawn again? I think the answer is no based on the ‘turns 1 (maximum)’ statement, but maybe that is just the limit per earthquake...although I cannot understand why someone would want to turn more than one of their roads.

Earthquake Event Card: although the road is sideways, may a settlement still be built at what used to be its free end?

Good Neighbors Event Card: I assume that everyone passes simultaneously and the received cards are not considered in the swap, yes? So, everyone who has at least one card chooses which one to pass off and then they all get passed simultaneously, rather than having it occur as some sort of chain reaction where the first player passes, then the player to his left passes, etc.

Conflict Event Card: When more than one player is eligible to take a card from another player, is it done in seating order based on the active player, or is it a simultaneous free for all?

Conflict Event Card: When more than one player is eligible to take a card from another player, are cards just stolen by one player eligible to stolen by another player?

Thread: Re: Blocking fishing hexes in Fishermen

Okay...German English dictionary deployed...

I make the first one to be:
Q. May the Robber be placed on the Lake?

Short A. Yes

Long A. On what basis can the Robber attack the fishing boats after they've caught fish? The Robber can catch them by surprise when they get back to shore (ha-ha).

The second one looks like:
Q. Once the game has commenced, may the Robber be sent back to the Desert?

Short A. Yes

Long A. The Robber may be moved to the Desert, even though there is no number chip on it.

Ponton wrote:

You're free to believe whatever you like, but Klaus Teuber says that the robber can be put on the lake, so he can. Of course, you're free to house-rule it however you like.

http://www.siedeln.de/faq/462_1314_de.html (GERMAN)

Also, the robber MAY return to the desert. This is since 1995 when Settlers first came out in German. I know Mayfair messed up with this, but read their official FAQ and you'll see that the robber may return to the desert, even in the Mayfair edition. I also think, this was fixed with the 4th edition.

http://www.siedeln.de/faq/192_354_de.html (GERMAN)

Here is the list of Fishermen questions I sent yesterday to rulesguru@mayfair.com:
Special Preparation, 4th bullet point: do you also get a fish token if your second settlement is placed by the lake (i.e. does it count as a ‘fishing ground tile’)?

May the Robber be placed on the lake to prevent the acquisition of fish tokens?

May the Robber be placed on a fishing ground tile to prevent the acquisition of fish tokens?

When may the Fish Card actions be performed:
- at any time in your turn, even before rolling the dice/drawing the event card?
- only during trading or building?

May the 5 fish free road be used to repair the Earthquake event?

Thread: Re: Should I bother?

I would recommend buying the box. I owned all three of the mini expansions as well. I find that a second set of event cards actually makes the game run smoother. The Rivers is very different than the mini expansion and well worth getting the upgrade. The Fishermen is really the only unchanged scenario, although that too comes with a new lake hex. Overall, the main purpose of this box set is for the Barbarian Invasion and Traders & Barbarians scenarios, and they are quite fun. I also enjoy the trade chits for use with 2-player games and the gold coins for other scenarios. The Caravan was not quite as fun as I expected, but it did balance the game more than other variants/scenarios have. Overall, I would suggest getting it, but not for retail price. Check out Boulder Games or TimeWellSpent. Boulder has the cheapest online Catan games, but TimeWellSpent has the best shipping rates and they price match. This probably isn't worth $42 for you, but a $10 discount makes it much more appealing.

(Note: Not sure if either of those companies ship to Canada, but I have a hunch they do.)

The two main scenarios are way more interesting than the small variants that has been previously available.

One has your travelling around the board in small carts to gather materials to build the Castle, and the other have players working together to hire Knights to fight off the invaders at the beaches.

Both are highly interesting and very different from the other original boxes.

No, the scenarios are not as altering to the game as Cities & Knights. Seeing the expansions you own, you already have a big chunk of what's in the box. You could easily cobble together pieces to try out the other scenarios before committing to a purchase.

A few things to note. First, the River is a similar but different variation in the Tarders & Barbarians box than the one that's been available recently. Second, the main variations (i.e., not the river, fisherman or event cards) do quite drastically change the game. Try to find someone with this expansion or find the rules online and see for yourself. I recommend getting it, but that's just me.

But once you punch out the tokens and tiles its just in the way.

My question is, what Catan game/expansion was it designed for?
You need to create a mysql database "cedit" with phpmyadmin and upload the included data.sql file. This creates all the tables needed for the editor. Then just start it with "localhost/cedit". Of course, you need to copy all files into the htdocs directory of your apache server. Use Internet Explorer 7, preferrably, although IE6 might work also.

You need to understand at least a little German to understand the linked page. If you're clever enough, just download the files, install a local Apache-PHP-MySQL environment and get the editor started with internet explorer. Have fun!

I actually have downloaded CEdit before and use it for images of all the game pieces, when needed. However, I tried to get the program working on an Apache-PHP-MySQL environment a bunch of times and couldn't get it working. I don't read German very fluently and I am not very good at creating editing environments, although I am quite skilled at working within them. I'd love to use CEdit or at least have a CEdit playground on which I can take pictures, but it just doesn't seem to be working well for me. If you know of any way to help my crisis, I would be much obliged.

You definitely need the expansion to play the "Traders & Barbarians" scenario with more than 4 players. Also, the fishermen come with additional pieces (one more lake, two more fishing grounds). The invasion scenario comes with additional barbarian figures, also the pieces for a 5th or 6th player (knights, wagon). There are more gold coins and chits (for T&B, and fishes).

Thread: Dev Cards : Knights == Soldiers? Largest Army

We tried the traders and barbarians scenario last night for the first time. Was...um...interesting. The resources ended up very scarce on clay and scarce on wheat, part of which lead to very few dev cards being bought.

The rules are pretty scarce regarding dev cards, aside from playing with the different ones. The rules also don't mention anything about largest army. Is this still in play in this scenario? And are Knights the same as Soldiers? Are the normal rules about dev cards in effect, specifically you can't play a dev card on the same turn you bought it (except for a VP card)?

Thanks

Thread: Re: Gold and 2:1 harbors

Thanks, Ken. The English translations of the German rules on BGG support what you say.

I do question as to why they mention that you can trade resources with the bank for gold in the Barbarian Invasion scenario. The only thing you can do with gold is trade for resources in that scenario. I suppose you could use it to reduce hand size, but it would be really inefficient (6 resources for 2 gold for 1 resource ).

Also, due to our misinterpretation of the rule, we were allowing 4:1 and 3:1 trades beyond the two allowed 2:1 trades. This allowed someone (me) to horde a bunch of gold, and then stock his hand in one turn. The two-trades-per-turn limit makes much more sense.

Ponton wrote:
The picture you provide shows a correct road placement. The base settlers rules say you need to build roads adjacent to your own existing roads, settlements or cities. In the case above, the red roads and the blue ones each are adjacent to roads of the same color. It's meaningless that they are also adjacent to the other color. The only prerequisite is to be adjacent to an own road.
I think he may have confused it that you can't build a road through someone elses settlement or city (roads could cross like above but if either built a legal settlement at the intersection, the other persons road would also be considered broken as far as longest road goes, which of course doesn't apply in this scenerio).
