Thread: Fun, but short

I saw the announcement post by Robot Martini on BGG, and Nerd Trivia intrigued me. I headed over to their site and bought all 5 of their first games after seeing the prices. We played four of them last night.

Nerd Trivia is $4 as of this writing and contains 48 cards, with one question to a card. Each question has a category and a difficulty rating: 1, 2, or 3. The category, difficulty, question, and answer are all printed on the same side of the card. Each player needs some paper and pencil to write down their answer, and someone needs to keep score.

The rules are 'trivial': The person who reads the question first reads the category and difficulty. Each player then writes down the name of one player who they think will answer correctly. The question is then read, and each player writes down their answer. If your answer is correct then you receive 1, 2, or 3 points, based on the questions difficulty level. If you wrote down the name of someone who answered correctly, and no one else write the same name, you get more points; 2x the difficulty level. If 2 people write down the same name then they both 1x the difficulty level. If 3 or more people wrote the same name then none of them get any bonus points. Each player gets to read 2 questions, then the game is over.

The game is fun, we had a very good time. As promised, it's Nerd Trivia: D&D, Star Trek, Star Wars, video games, Simpsons, SciFi & Fantasy novels, etc. There is some replayability after you have used all 48 questions; you can bet the n00b players know the answer and try to work the bonus points. There's some strategy & second-guessing as you pick you might know the answer and try to choose someone no one else has. It's also only $4; the beer consumed during those 48 questions last night cost three times more than the game. There are some spelling mistakes (shades of the Bubble Boy episode on Seinfeld ...) and some issues with the difficulty ratings on a few questions: "That was a 3?! It should be a 1!" or "That was a 1?! It should be a 3!"

I rated the game an 8 based on the fun factor, but you must be aware of the replay issue. I'll trade my set on BGG or give it someone at work. I'll also buy the next expansion set when it's released it I can swing the shipping charges.
