Thread: Re: English rules and review

Playing beppo with adults only i made this rule:
Every player can make only one step to the next free colour. So you have to try beppo jumping to the only one right colour. If you push a figure from his place, the figure will only fall return to the next free space. The player who shot is allowed to try one more to bring his figure one space up.
Perhaps (i never tried) it will work with both rules- one for the chidren and one for adults in the same game.
To give beginners the right feeling give them the order to mange it, that beppo will jump in the bush. when they are successful, they understand how Beppo and magnetic works together.
Excuse my bad english. Hope you understand.

Thread: English rules and review

Today was the day that my son finally got to play 'Beppo Der Bock' ('Beppo the buck'). I got the German version from amazon.de (one of the titles that they are actually allowed to ship, don't ask them to ship other titles such as Jamaica or Keltis) which comes without rules in English. After spending some time dusting off my German, we started playing. The bit that I missed in the beginning was that the board has to stay in the box, so that Beppo stays within the confines of the board. Anyway, enough of my not-so-fluent German.
First a recap of the rules. Your goal is to be the one who completes the track first. The track consists of four different types of rounds: rock, bush, water and corn (red, green, blue, yellow). The way you progress down the track is to get Beppo to end up in an area. When Beppo ends up in the red area, the player moves his meeple to the first unoccupied red round. How do you move Beppo? Well, there is a little feeder track that you plug in on the top right side of the board. You put a little metal ball down the feeder track and make sure the ball is aimed towards the magnet, which is a but futher toward the center of the board. The magnet is quite strong, so when the metal ball gets cloes to the magnet, the ball accelerates. And this is where Beppo comes in, because you position Beppo close to the magnet before you let the iron ball roll down the track. Depending on how you position Beppo and the angle by which the ball arrives, Beppo will go a certain way and will end up in one of the four areas mentioned above.
What if Beppo knocks a player from its spot? Too bad, go back to start.
My son (5 years old) didn't like it when his sister (also 5 years old) pulled this trick on him.
In order to protect yourself from being mercilessly put back, you can stand of the four leaf clover disk. When Beppo hits you, typically he will just take the four leaf clover from under you, but you're still on the round that you were on. The player that cause Beppo to take the four leaf clover from under another player can now put the four leaf clover under his/her own meeple.
So what's the reaction of the kids? They (boy, girl, both 5 1/2 years old) like the game and we played three games in a row. I had to answer lots of questions about the boy with the catapult and what he was doing to Beppo. OK, so the kids is naughty using the catapult on Beppo. They clued in to the function of the four leaf clover and also stated where they wanted Beppo to end up. The could probably have played this game at the age of 4. Given that they wanted to play it several times in a row, I think it's a good game for them. A game can last as short as 5 minutes, but typical is probably between 10 and 15 minutes, which is a good length for them.
So, is it any fun for adults. I don't mind the game and I'll probably play it with them any time. It combines dexterity (aim the metal ball, position Beppo so he goes where you want him to go) and a bit of strategy (get a player back to start, go for an area where you go the maximum number of spots ahead). I'd rate this game 7 out of 10. I don't see how it will have the staying power of 'Pick Picknic', but it's a bit less involved.

I can't find it either in the US. But AdamSpielt in Germany has it for 32 dollars, and I have been surprised before by how not-that-expensive their shipping is. I just made a mock order and was quoted 2.68 Euros for shipping it to Laredo, TX.

Granted, that was just an estimation, but if you order from them, they'll quote you shipping before charging your card. You've got nothing to lose. Plus, it might be a good excuse to get a couple of other things you can't get in the U.S. (For example, if you have kids, and from wanting Beppo I'm assuming you do, then Waldschattenspiel looks very, very interesting).

Thread: Re: Endgame?

Thanks. That makes sense.

We played it for the first time to day, and it seems that you should not always kick around your opponents. Not only because the kids might get upset to get knocked off all the time.

We have to figure the finer tactics here, I guess.

Thread: Re: Endgame?

No, the goal space is the space just inside the garden gate, which has all four colours on it. Once the final space of a colour has been passed and Beppo lands in that coloured area, you will then go the the goal (since it counts as a space of every colour). So, for example, once your piece has passed the last, blue, water space and Beppo lands in the pond, then your piece will go to the goal to win the game.
