The rest of the game is on autopilot.
Well, there's a little more to it than that; for example, choosing whether to lock in with soldiers with more dice than is optimal can be an interesting decision. But yes, the big choice is which disk to attack. But I think a good deal of judgment can be applied to that decision, particularly when you add in the extra risk, but extra reward of attacking a disk that's already been won. That's the best part of the game; along with, as Ben says, the trash talking!

Monopoly Express has an engaging "push-your-luck" choice multiple times per turn. Monopoly beats Knizia for me in the Express line.
Monopoly Express is a decent game, but I think the luck swings are much higher than for Risk Express. As usual when it comes to dice games, you can't beat The Doctor!

Thread: World Domination in 30 minutes...Nice!

As a big fan of classic games, the Express line of games have been something that I have avidly sought out since I first saw Monopoly Express on a store shelf. Unfortunately there was one that proved more elusive since it wasn't published in the US. But thanks to the extreme generosity of a friend, I was given a copy that I could play. So, for those out there wondering about this missing link of the Express line of games, here's the details.

What do you get with Risk Express? In the game-pod you receive a set of rules, 14 land region discs, and 7 special dice (Three sides with soldiers, one side with a General, one side with a cavalry, and one side with a cannon.)

How does Risk Express work? At the beginning of the game all the land discs are randomly arranged in the center of the table. Players take turns in normal clockwise fashion.

On a player's turn they roll all 7 dice and then place matching dice to fill a single row of symbols on one of the land discs. Then they roll the remaining dice. If they get a result that allows them to fill more rows on the same disc they can claim only one more row. If they fail to get the proper dice to fill a row, they must lose one die and roll again. The player continues until they have filled all the rows on the disc, thereby conquering it, or until they have lost so many dice that it becomes impossible to conquer the disc.

Conquered land discs go in front of the player. But on subsequent turns other players can try to take those land discs from that player by conquering in the same way. The only difference is that there is an additional row with one General that must also be filled in order to steal the disc.

If a player is able to conquer all of the land discs of one continent/color they flip those discs facedown and lock them in, making them impossible to steal. The game ends when all the land discs have been claimed from the center of the table. Players score the points pictured on the discs they have in front of them. Each color has a special score on the back of one disc that is claimed instead of the individual disc scores if a player has defeated the entire continent. High score wins.

What does Blott think of Risk Express? This is one of those games that my group really enjoys. There seems to be an inordinate amount of trash-talk around the game, and people will actually go out of their way to take discs from other players even if it's not in their best interest. I really enjoy this aspect because it reminds me of those big Risk games I used to play. And, of course, this game gives me that feel without the multiple hour time commitment.

Who will enjoy Risk Express? I think that people who are fans of Risk will find that this game scratches a similar itch. It is a nice light game that will please people who don't mind luck-driven dice-fests. However, some gamers will find the game too luck-based. On each turn the number of meaningful decisions are very limited. Once you've decided which region to attack, it can almost feel like a round of Yahtzee, but you can't even change what you're going after. So the same luck-based elements that may entertain some people, may annoy others.

Any parting comments about Risk Express? I only have one of the Express games that I haven't tried yet, but up to now Risk is definitely my favorite of the group. Despite the high luck-factor in the game, and the limited decision tree, I just find myself having fun playing the game. It delivers what I'm looking for: a world domination, back-stabbing, cut-throat game of Risk in the time it takes to play 2 turns of the original game. So, it may not be a classic that is worth the high price of international shipping, but it is definitely worth it if you can find a bargain.
Risk Express is a great game! I originally paid $30, and it's certainly been worth it.

Of all the express games it's by far the most strategic and challenging to play. There's excellent balance and ways to swing the game in your favor. Knizia has come up with a game that's actually better than most games in this (roll and set aside) genre. Plays great with 2.

Thread: Knizia found dirt cheap in Target

At last Risk Express has surfaced in Target (Hornsby) for $14.99!!

(Mini review thrown in)
Played twice with my wife who really enjoyed it; it reminded me of King Arthur-the cardgame in that there are objective cards and the last one taken ends the game.

These 14 cards represent areas of the globe which are up for grabs if you roll and match the unique combinations on each card. If successful you get the point value for the card. At game end most points wins. (Surprise!!)

Should please the Yatzhee crowd, though more interactive (so fun) in that you can steal players cards (which Amanda loved doing!). A neat twist is if you collect all the cards of one colour you flip them all over to show an increased value for the lot (eg. Two cards make up Africa, 2 pts each, 5 pts if you invade both).

In each turn the card picked provides a passive internal commentary (i.e telling you what you need to roll)and along with the dependecy of the dice to do the job (coming up with the desired result) gives the game its pleasure. Also each unsuccessful roll means you have to put aside one of the 7 dice, so there is a tense countdown to end a player's turn.

The thing that you have to do to make the game end exciting is to actively do the maths and voice how many points each player has.

So a dice game with a real sense of theme, playable in 15 mins and all wrapped up in its own dice bowl. Probably best with 2 though it may hold the attention of 3 or 4 as like in Pickomino the stealing creates a vested interest in the non-turn player being targeted.

I think Hasbro has a hit!

Nick

Oops, noticed my wife and I played the game wrong last night. I overlooked the rule that only 1 battleline can be picked per roll. I wondered why we were smashing our way through the defences so easily.
Another play with the right rules makes the game more interesting as you have to weigh up the probabilities of what you have first rolled and your chances of meeting the conditions of each battleline with the number of dice rolls allowed.

how about To Court the King style finish as a tie breaker.

player 1 has 8 pts-- Africa continent 5 pts + Australia continent 3 pts

Africa and Australia total has:
3 generals
1 artillery
3 cavalry

Player 2 has 8 pts--Americas 8 pts

America has
1 general
3 artilleries

Player one rolls 7 dice, sets aside one dice. You can change the face of one die for every two value you have from you conquered territory. Thus Player 1 can change 1 die into a general or and 1 die into cavalry, while player 2 can change one die into artillery.

ranking highest to lowest

General > artillery > cavalry > 3 infantry > 2 infantry > 1 infantry

Thread: Re: Laminating "Cards" a good idea or bad?

It's a great idea with good lamination.

They can be laminated well at Staples in the USA for 1.47 + tax (3 sheets at .49 each). You can cut them out circularly from the 9 by 12 laminating sheets such that they fit in the box with no problems
whatsoever. There's plenty of space inside the dice bowl.

They look great (assuming they're cut decently), and the disks are sitting inside the lamination completely unharmed.

I'm glad I saw someone suggest it on these forums.
