Thread: Not a gamer's game

Quack Quack is a beautifully produced game - the bits are nicely painted wood, the packaging is sturdy and attractive, and overall it's a nice product. It is however, a game aimed firmly at the 3 and 4 year old market.

Game play is simple. The animal tiles are layed out where everyone can see them, and players take turns to roll the dice. The result of the dice is three colours, which are the colours appearing on exactly one of the animal tiles. The first player to make the noise of that animal wins a point, and the first player to 4 points wins the game.

Note that this is a game of skill and speed! In my plays, I noticed that 41 year olds are much better at this game than 7 year olds, and 3 year olds are not at all competitive with computer science Ph.D.s, though how computer science helps I can't say :-). Seriously though, this is not a game for the whole family - the big kids have a huge advantage over the little ones, so for there to be any sense of competition players must all be of similar age and skill levels.

Where I can see the game being useful is where you have groups of 4 year olds - kindergarten or day care, maybe. It would also be suitable for mum or dad to play with the little one as a learning game.

I played the game with two 3 year olds. One of them could do the animal sounds, but decided he preferred the attention he got when he said "I don't know" all the time. The little girl was younger and just wanted to throw the dice all the time. Both of them had a good time in their own way, but the details of the game were mostly irrelevant.

I can confirm that *I* won't be playing Quack Quack regularly, but there are situations where it's an appropriate, and very pretty, game that little kids will enjoy.
