I just wanted to bring some attention to that in case users aren't notified of comments on pictures, and I also wanted to ask: as you introduce new card templates now and in the future, will people still be able to use your site to make new cards in the older style(s)? Ooh, alternate or modifyable templates would be a cool feature.

Whatever you add to it, I look forward to seeing the new version!

Still slowly banging away at this. There were pretty widespread changes to the BGG Collection XMLAPI. the good news is that we'll see a few other features out the other end.

The changes to the XML require me to implement filtering so that you only get the games you actually own, rather than all the games you've flagged as fortrade, want, wanttoplay etc etc, so while I'm at it I'm adding in filtering on other tags etc, and the ability to just explicitly pick a few games.

There will be a few other features as well, but I don't want to spoil it for y'all just yet.

peace,
Tom

All,
My apologies for not being here to share in your recent pain. It turns out that this tool is totally dependent on the stable performance of BGG itself. As such, most of the errors you have experienced recently have been due to errors at BGG.

The problems happening at this moment are due to changes at the geek as well. This most recent change has drastically altered the format of the file used to convey information between BGG and my card generation software.

I don't have an estimate yet as to when things will be working again. I appreciate your patience.

peace,
Tom

Thread: Open Source?

Good evening,

I was wondering, since this was always a free product anyway, is there any chance of this becoming open source that the community could build and grow? I completely understand the rigors of jobs, family, and other life requirements, and am not really surprised that such a tool requires more time than may be available at times.

I think it'd be a shame if this product ended in it's current state. There is so much potential that needs to be developed.

Anyway, my $.02.
Justin

Thanks for your confidence Chris.

This is indeed a BGG problem. Unfortunatly the tool doesn't give you any direct indication of that. For future reference, if you see people complaining about the XMLAPI, then the tool is probably impacted as it makes heavy use of this very handy, geek provided, utility.

Here's the issue...
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/article/2099734

Thanks for your patience.
Sorry, I should have been more clear.
Yes, it is the error message I get when I go to the link and request a file of my game collection. I had used it successfully just a few weeks ago with no problem. Since my collection is very large (400+) I use this dummy account to add any new games I acquire and then generate the cards. It is really the best way I've found to keep track of my games, so I hope it continues to operate in the future!
It is a fabulous tool and I really appreciate that it was created and offered to us all to use...I must send the author more GG!!

The recent changes in BGG caused the files to be corrupted. They broke *immediately* on BGG being changed a week or two ago.

I sent Tom a message, and he fixed it ASAP!!!

Unfortunately it is broken again. I assume it is because BGG has yet to stabilize, but I don't really know.

Patience! Judging by his track record, Tom will fix this fantastic useful tool.

Thread: Re: Does it really work?

It would really be interesting to design rules that approximate any social choice algorithm with good properties.

The first that comes to my mind is :

Draw cards one by one. For each drawn card, people vote whether they want to play that game or not (for example each player take one pawn in their hand if they want to play the game, and all players reveal simultaneously whether they have a pawn in hand or not). You can also just use a show of hands.

On the first round, put the just voted game on the "play pile" and note how much positive votes the game had by putting a dice next to the play pile, whose face shows the number of positive votes.

On subsequent rounds, three cases may happen :
* current game has more positive votes than shown on the dice. Discard all cards in play pile, put the current game on a new play pile and update the dice.
* current game has as much positive votes as shown on the dice. Put the card on the pile.
* current game has less positive votes than shown on the dice. Discard the card.

When all cards have been voted, randomly pick a game in the play pile and play it.

This requires as much votes as cards, which can be a little bit long. The deck then needs to be pre-filtered. I like the idea of a "first round" as shown in the initial post of this thread. You can also store the cards sorted, and put just played games in the bottom of the pile, and only pick the n (20 ?) first cards which show compatible number of players and time schedule.

That's in there as part of the original game design, the intent is the player who is dealt that card must discard it to start the game.

For those of you keeping score at home, this makes potentially 4 cards added to your collection:
1- for the "I Don't know, what do you want to play?" game itself, in case someone doesn't like the options that have shown up in the play pile this gives a chance that the next game selected will be IDKWDYWTP
2- the rules for IDKWDYWTP
3- A "Thanks to BGG" card
4- Monopoly as described above.

peace,
Tom

I'm finally reading this forum in detail - shouldn't that be The Ungame as the discard?
Thread: Re: Recommended Avery/Avery-compatible stock?

The problem with something like that, though, is that in order to print N-up, I have to print the full pages output from the program and use the printer driver to do the N-up piece. The card stock, therefor, has to go fully to the edges (i.e. no borders) because Acrobat, AFAIK, doesn't let me print N full pages out on a pre-defined Avery form. If it does, I would love to know how to do it!
