Thread: Re: Sewers in mid-move?

The questions I posted to Twilight were:-

Can you enter or exit a sewer mid-way through a move? And if you can, how does the flashlight factor into the number of spaces you can move? We played this as each point of movement underground (with the flashlight) moved the player 2 squares whilst still underground.
Whilst underground, can you place a sewer token to exit, or can you only exit through already placed tokens?

When you use the subway, you enter and stop, miss your next turn (I assume you draw cards and roll zombies [and fight, as mentioned in the rules]) and the turn after you can move to another station, but after you arrive, do you get a movement roll as normal, or do you effectively miss 2 movement stages?

And the answers I got were:-

You can exit a sewer at anytime, there are no limitations other than you must exit through a sewer lid. It can be placed right before you exit. Once you leave the sewer, the flashlight has no affect, so the way you do it is correct.

When using the subway, you only miss one movement stage. Once you move to the new subway, you can roll and move.

So I think that covers everything.

Hey,

I couldn't find a FAQ on the website for this expansion, and I had a question. Can you enter or exit a sewer mid-way through a move? And if you can, how does the flashlight factor into the number of spaces you can move?

Thread: Re: Is this for First edition or Second?

Hi Joe,
I understand your point and even agree to a certain extent. Unfortunately, the reality is that the artist who did the original tiles has become very busy with other work. He no longer has the time to do the tile art. In all honesty though, he was never very keen on doing the tile art in the first place.
Thank you,
Todd

Thread: Re: Is this for First edition or Second?

I hadn't actually bought the 2nd Edition - I like the game but not enough to rebuy all of the original sets again, so this was my first look at the 2nd Edition art style.

Overall I like this expansion - I think that the sewers and subways add some interesting and fun options to the game without adding a whole lot of complexity.

I have to say, though, that I'm not too keen on the new art style for the tiles. While the new art is much more detailed and evocative I actually prefer the simpler 1st Edition art style. I find the original tiles much easier to play with than the new ones as some of the important graphic elements were hard to see on the new ones without bending down over the table to look at them closely.

You start with three, and when in combat with a zombie if you roll a 1 you lose a Guts token, but if you roll a 6 you gain one. You have a minimum of 1 guts and a max of 5. You can hold as many event cards equal to the number of guts tokens you have.

I think you're right about the sewers being a dangerous place to visit. Of course, if you head down there at the right moment, it could be a game winning situation too.

I think my favorite expansion is still Zombies!!! 3.5: Not Dead Yet!, the all card expansion, followed closely by Zombies!!! 5: School's Out Forever. I think guts are a great addition to the game.

Hum... My biggest gripe in this expansion: health is already pretty low to start wasting on going in the sewers. And there are maybe too much event cards related to the sewers. Maybe it's because the times I played with the expansion, sewers were only used for very tactical reasons, for example to reach a close place and skip 2-3 zombies.

Overall, I still think that Zombies 2 is the best expansion for the game.

Thread: Another great expansion

Zombies!!! 6: Six Feet Under is the second expansion for the game to be designed only for use with existing sets. Unlike everything else but Zombies!!! 3.5, you can’t play it without using tiles from another set.
The big addition to the rules this time out is the ability to travel underground either using the subway or the sewers.

Components
As usual with Twilight Creations, the components are top notch. There are 16 new map tiles with art by Kurt Miller and 32 new event cards with art by Dave Aikens. The cards are dark and gritty, much more like the second edition artwork than the first. There are also 24 sewer tokens and a one page sheet of rules.

Setting/Theme
The Zombies!!! series is controversial with diehard adherents to the theme who aren’t worried about the rules and with those who say the rules are terrible. I happen to think the the rules do a great job of conveying the simple theme of the game. The artwork is, as always, top notch and the addition of the sewers is a great one.

Rules
The rules are fairly simple and, in keeping with tradition, the haters of the game started poking holes in them before the game was released.
Reading them carefully answers the biggest question: can I move through normally impassable spaces while in sewers? The answer is no. “…the player rolls and moves as normal except they skip combat with any zombies they encounter…”
So no, you can’t move through impassable spaces.
The rules are short and sweet and are pretty simple to grasp. I think Twilight Creation has taken such a beating on rules in the past that some gamers are just looking for problems or ways to misinterpret things so they can maintain their complaints.
The additional rules cover the sewer tokens and the subway stations. The subway station is easy. You enter the station, you miss your next turn unless a zombie has moved onto you in which case you must kill it. You then take the subway to any other subway tile on the board. If there is only one tile on the board, the ability doesn’t work.
The sewers are a little more complicated. Each player has 2 sewer tokens. On his turn a player may place one token on a street space. The token may not be moved without a card effect. To use the sewers, you move to the token ad say you’re using the sewers. You place your token on its back. On each subsequent turn you must pay either a guts (if you’re using the excellent Guts rules from Zombies!!! 5) or life token to remain in the sewer. If you run out of tokens you die. While in the sewer you move normally except you ignore zombies.

Observations
The addition of the sewers and subways can really speed the game by allowing players to avoid some combat. The subways, in particular, do a great job of making distant spaces much closer, allowing the game to end quickly and reducing the chance of one or more players being out of the running for the helipad when it comes out.

Recommendation
Overall, I think this is a great addition to the Zombies!!! universe. The additional rules for the sewers and subway really help enhance the game and speed up the end game where even a diehard fan like me will admit sometimes things can be a little slow.

Having played the game through a few times we have come up with the house rule of - when 'flood' is played and the character is under a building or in an other wise normally impassible space they are considered to have drown. Apply the usual death conditions i.e. half your zombies are lost and your hand of cards aswell.

I just read through the cards and found this:

"FLOOD
All players currently using the sewers must place their pawn in the standing position. They are no longer in the sewer and are considered to be back on the surface streets."

Looks like the sewers are following the streets only! So no movement under buildings and "impassable" spaces.
Thread: New Sewer on Campus

My wife and I have used the new Zombies!!! 6 expansion with the Zombies!!! 5 expansion a couple of times and find it to be a very good configuration.

The subway station let you get to where you want to go on the board quickly and sewers allow you to bypass hordes of zombies (not to mention that the Guts tokens give you more opportunity to use sewers). Also the new official ruling that you need not use the door to enter buildings (we also play that zombies don't have to use the door either), speeds things up even more, and makes for more interesting zombie movement.

For this match we shuffled the helipad into the bottom half, used only the Z5 and 6 decks, and took our two sewer tokens (I think in future 2 player matches we would each take three or four tokens).

The first part of the campus mainly consisted of Z6 tiles and we were in a city of liquor stores and subway stations. Penny was getting around more quickly, having acquired a bike. After bagging a few zombies, I was up to five cards from some good rolls which netted me guts tokens.

Penny was having more trouble fighting off zombies and only had two guts tokens. Our city was forming up as the downtown core just outside a campus, when we spotted the admin building, which I sent Penny to against her will. On the way she found a bat, and was swatting down zombies at a rate that promised she would soon eat up my lead of 15-10 zombies.

No longer under compulsion, Penny then turned away from the Admin building and I entered. A particularly stubborn zombie reduced me to 2 life and guts tokens before being despatched.

Penny then entered the sewer system to avoid a chorus line of zombies on main street. I still had not used my sewer tokens yet. They are most useful when you have a destination in mind, and I was happy in my end of town getting supplies. She stayed in the sewer for a couple of turns and popped up at the Phys. Ed. Building.

Meanwhile, I had my eye on the nearest subway station. They were quite well placed throught the city, and I wanted to get to the far end to get to all the goodies at the hospital. We were getting low on tiles and there still was no helipad, so it looked like it was going to be a 25 zombie victory.

So I made it to the hospital and the pickings were sweet, and I took the lead 24-15. Only one more zombie to go.

So I thought I would try out the sewer system, and it was amazing! You can get to any place fast! (We play that while the tokens have to be placed on the street, you need not travel strictly under street level).

I returned to the surface at the Science Centre, bagged my last zombie and won the game.

It turned out that the Helipad was the vary last tile, and my wife had been holding on to the "It WAS Here" (this card allows you to move the helipad) card from near the beginning of the game.

This is a cool expansion and really helps you get around the city faster. With only two people though, I think it would be more fun to have more than four possible sewer entrances/exits on the map, so we will try playing with three or four tokens each next time.

Next we will be playing Z6 with Z2!

Thread: Re: The Benefits of Public Transortation

We usually only play with two or three people, so it alleviates some of the problem with down time. As for the roll and move mechanic, I'm undecided. While rolling one is frustrating and can sometimes hurt gameplay, not being able to get higher than 2 when you are out of lives, isn't very appealling either. Thematically, we put the lower rolls down to having to sneak, very slowly, into a building or street.

One way that game play can really be sped up is to play Zombies 2, 3, or 5 by themselves, with four or fewer players. You can throw in half a 3.5 deck as well, and the game is quick and vicious, dice rolling aside.

Perhaps you could try two Average Dice instead of two d6s? The Average Dice are numbered 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 5 and should allow for a more consistent mean result than two regular d6s. You can't get 11 or 12 of course, but you also can't roll lower than 4.

The reason I'm asking is that the roll-and-move mechanic, and the game's length are the only things that have kept me from buying the game. I am a BIG zombie freak, but hate games with a lot of downtime and roll-and-move mechanics normally give me hives.

It allows you to get to parts of the board that would normally be impossible, or would take a very long time, so in that sense it speeds the game up. The dice rolling is still a problem. We haven't used the Lifes +2, but we do use two dice when the helipad appears. The bad rolls are a pain. I've thought about rolling up the ones to twos.

We're going to be trying Z6 with Z5 this week and I will write a session report on how that goes.

Did you find that the subways and sewers sped up the game?

By the way, have you ever tried an alternative to rolling for movement, such as the popular "Hearts +2 Spaces" ruling?

Thread: The Benefits of Public Transortation

My wife and I have all of the Zombies!!! expansions, so it was a cinch that I would get Zombies 6. We followed the recommendation of the instructions, which is to combine this expansion with the base game, ie. shuffle in the tiles with the base tiles and do likewise with the cards.

We have only played it once, but the addition of subways and sewer systems to the base set made for more possibilites in game play.

The new tiles consist of six subway stations, as well as some new stores and street tiles. When you land on a subway, you can then skip a turn, and then move your shotgun guy to any other subway tile on the map. You are also given two sewer tokens, which allow you to travel under streets, avoiding combat with zombies, but at the expense of one life or guts token per turn underground.

As there was only two of us, we removed 14 street tiles from the combined set and got underway.

Two subways came up almost immediately and were quite close together. In the early part of the game, they really had little impact on the game.

My zombie count was up to 7 to my wife's two when the third subway was placed. It was placed right by the Hardware Store, across town. That's when I realized that I need not throw out my Chainsaw card, as I could potentially get to the Hardware Store in about three turns instead of 5-9, depending on rolls. Unfortunately, I was fighting my way out of the hospital to get to the subway and was down to one life.

In this expansion there is also a new rule clarification that allows you to enter a building through any adjacent space; not just a door, so this sped things up a little. I got out of the hospital, played "The Keys are Still in It," and went on a big killing spree and took the lead 15-9. By this time I had a card that would allow me three bullets if I could get to the Sporting Goods store, so I was headed in that direction instead of the Hardware store.

Penny then played the Flashlight card which would allow her to double her movement underground. She placed a sewer token and went under. On her next turn she only rolled a one, so doubled she only moved two spaces in the sewers, spent a life (we weren't playing with Guts tokens), and had to come up for air. (You could die in the sewers if you didn't get to an exit before running out of life tokens).

Then I had to go for supplies (killed), lost half my zombies, and I was now trailing 9-8. I was still trying to get to the Sports Store, so I took the subway station closest to Town Square. Meanwhile, Penny went on a killing spree, increasing her lead to 17-9.

Then the Helipad appeared. I wasn't worried. From the beginning of the game I had been hanging on to one of the new cards: "It Was Here ?!?" This card allows you to move the Helipad to any legal space!

Penny had spent a turn in the subway, so when she went to move, I played "Brain Cramp" and moved her to a subway station furthest from the Helipad, so she waited another turn in that subway station.

I finally made it to the Sporting Goods Store, played my card, and collected my bullets. Then it was Penny's turn, and guess what tile she drew? A subway station! Guess where it went? Right by the Helipad!

I had already played a card that turn so I couldn't move the Helipad. She rolled a four out of the station, killed the zombies in her path and made it to the Helipad and won.

Final body count.
Penny: 21
Chris: 13

I like the addition of the subways because you can get to the far end of town quickly by placing them strategically as they come up. I think the sewers would be good too, but we didn't get a chance to use them much.

The new cards look very good, allowing you to do everything from moving the Helipad, to regaining five lives, to blocking sewer exits, to placing an opponent in the building with the most zombies.

Next time we play, we are going to use Zombies 5 and the guts tokens. With two players, the expansions by themselves allow for very tight, intense play. The sewers would be especially good to get through all those crowded parking lots.

Thread: Re: Is this for First edition or Second?

Second Edition just clarified some rules and upgraded the art.

I would guess the art for this is more in line with second edition,
but all expansions are 100% compatible with both 1st and 2nd edition.

Unless you're confusing 2nd Edition with ZombieTown, which isn't an edition, it's an entirely different game.

If you ran this expansion with 1st edition (Zombies!!! not ZombieTown), the only noticeable difference would be the art on the tiles. (In first edition it was more traditional painting/colored pencil, while 2nd edition is all computer generated).
If you ran it with 2nd edition, it would all look pretty seamless I imagine.
