Thread: BatteLore: Dwarven Battalion Specialist Pack: my view.

Preamble.
As soon as I saw the Scottish Bagpipers, I knew that I had to buy this expansion….. they just looked like great figures and great fun! I was slightly confused to see them in the Dwarven Battalion expansion rather than the Scottish Wars expansion though!

Components.
This expansion comprises: an Iron Dwarves Bagpipers unit; two units of blue banner Iron Dwarves Spear Bearers; two units of blue banner Iron Dwarves Axe Swingers; plus associated banners and cards. There is also a four page rule book with two additional scenarios

The components are standard Battlelore fare, and hence of good quality. The Spear Bearers should really be ‘Caber Tossers’ from the look of them (and notes in the rules). Again, cost is an issue for me: this set retails for 20 Euros or about £12-13, which seems overpriced for what you get.

Gameplay.
Bagpipers are indeed fun, and pretty versatile. They can be any banner colour, and they are basically fear-inducing troops. All hits that they role are counted as flags, causing enemies to retreat in fear (unless immune).

Spear Bearers are basically a little tougher than standard Dwarves, being slightly better against mounted units, and battling back at +1d. The Axe Swingers are even tougher still, gaining hits on Bonus strikes, and gaining the ‘Axe Swing’ ability that allows one hit to be re-rolled to try and get an additional hit.

So, What Do I Think?
I like this expansion, but not as much as the two Goblin expansions. I give it 7 out of 10. The Bagpipers are great fun and can be used on an unsuspecting opponent to great effect. They can be a nightmare to deal with if they roll well and units start running! The other units just add a little more steel to the already pretty tough Dwarves, and hence are not such a great addition (though the different figure styles are welcome). The scenarios are standard fare.

My only gripe is price: you simply don’t get enough for your money in this package, or any of the other figure expansions. Much like the two Goblin expansions, there is some overlap between this and the other expansion containing Dwarves (Scottish Wars). I can’t help but feel a victim of marketing and excessive profit making because there really could have been just one Goblin Skirmish package (containing all the new figure types from the two Goblin expansions) and one Scottish Dwarves package (containing all the new Dwarf figures). The fact that there is overlap and that some of the figures and expansion descriptions don’t match (e.g. Goblin Ostrich riders are clearly ‘Skirmishers’; Dwarven Bagpipers and Caber Tossers are clearly ‘Scottish’) just makes me think that Days of Wonder were simply trying to spread everything out as thinly as possible in order to maximise profit. Don’t get me wrong, I realise that companies must make profits, but for these expansions, I don’t think they have got the balance between decent package for the gamer and decent profit for the company quite right.

Of course the warrior suffers from very few level dependent cards, that's why I usually steer clear of the level 3 warrior.

It did work out with the Cry Havoc card, since I got the +2 dice, but really I thought the training ground landmark would be nice. It turns out that I never used it, so yes, next time I'll probably make a different choice.

And yes, I used to play Magic quite a bit, but I didn't realize I got the "ping" from that game!
Thread: Sturdy Dwarves vs Numerous Goblins, how would the Dwarves do

We played the Axes and Spears scenario from the Dwarven Battalion Specialist Pack. It was a lot of fun! I had the Dwarves and Bruce had the Goblins. My guys were hardy but he had more units on the board, so it was going to be tough.

I took a 3 warrior/3 commander war council, while he took a 3 wizard, 1 commander, 1 rogue, 1 warrior war council. This made a big difference, as there were a lot of lore cards I couldn't use. Fortunately my initial card draw included a Dispel, which was good, since he was collecting an extra lore a turn for the Wizard's Portal.

I planned on letting the battle come to me, since I had the Dwarven Spear guys and some decent archers. I think Bruce wanted to overwhelm with numbers, so it all worked. We had a couple of skirmishes with no notable losses, and after half hour we were tied at 2 to 2. He then played Assault which lets you order all of your units and gives them an additional die on top of it! Unfortunately for me, I didn't have enough lore to play the Dispel because I didn't take any Priests levels (doh!). The good news was he only got two more banners total from the Assault, and my spear guys were effective. I also did manage to play a Slow on the Heavy Infantry he had, so that helped a lot.

Later, I had a Counterattack card, and he played a Center Advance card. I had not been able to order my center units all game, so the Counterattack card was very timely. I used it in conjunction with a Cry Havoc (which let me roll +2d for my ordered units). After the smoke cleared, I had picked up three more banners, and most of his units were down to their single banner guy. Unfortunately, at that point all I had was Right Wing cards. My right section had been beaten down to a single set of archers, so each turn I pinged him. During this time, he had better cards, and took out my cavalry, so we both had 5 banners. One of the archer pings finally took and I won the game.

We both felt like it was a good game, even though it was a little worrying when he got the Assault card. He felt the dwarves were pretty tough adversaries and wasn't too impressed with the Goblin Charge feature of the goblins. I don't know what it would have been like if the majority of my cards weren't Right Wing which held me back much of the later game.

Next up: Goblin Skirmishers. I'll be sure to post a Session Report.
Thread: Re: [Review] BattleLore: Dwarven Battalion Specialist Pack

We tried the Axe and Spear scenario last night and it was a blast. Using a Foot Assault followed by a Cavalry Charge (not 100% sure on the card names) I was able to get the entire goblin centre and left flank engaged in 2 turns. Carnage ensued. The bagpipes blew, goblins fled, regrouped and charged in again. The board was almost clear of figures when the dwarves triumphed by using their heavy cavalry to mop up some stragglers and get the final 2 banners to win 6-5. My chain lightning destroyed 9 units without winning a banner the turn before.

The bagpipers caused a lot of fright and were particularly effective at breaking my line.

The axe wielders didn't do much but they did win a banner on a bonus strike so that earned them their pay.

We forgot about the extra die on the spear tossers battling back, but they got crushed by the cavalry charge anyway (boosted by Mass Might).

Storage is now a problem, I haven't unpacked the Goblin expansion yet and the box is full.

Does line of sight matter when using the bagpipes? Can the be behind units or terrain and still "hit" a target if within range? I would assume that line of sight does not matter with music.

I would assume that terrain would matter, unless it states otherwise in the rules. It would be a huge pain in the neck to add new rules.

And sure, it's more than just the music, I would assume. It's also the sight of thousands of rampaging bagpipe playing dwarves ready to show you what's really under the kilt. I would assume that some of the music wouldn't resonate as well over mountains or through forests, as many of the waves would have been reflected by the trees or the earth proper.

3.) Axe Swingers: With one specialist card, a player can replace one or two blue banner dwarf units with axe units. This basically changes their weapons to axes, which allows them one extra die if they roll a bonus strike. This is similar to the Hill Giant, although not as good and possibly not as good as simply giving them an extra die to begin with? I’m not sure that I would pick them over simply upgrading two human units to dwarven units; but the models are neat, and they do add some variety to the game. They are probably best when used in the scenarios included with the pack.

Terrian. Axe Swingers are the best units to use in Elevated Terrian as they hit with four dice if they do get a bonus strike. They are by far the best unit to use in terrain and probably pretty good if you use the Cleric, as you can use the terrian-based damage cards to supplement your damage.

Thread: [Review] BattleLore: Dwarven Battalion Specialist Pack

BattleLore is the game of choice for me these days, I’m constantly seeking for ways to pull it out and play it, and it stays fresh and enjoyable for me each time. I like the diversity of the War Council, and how there are multiple strategies that can be employed using the same scenario. Dwarves and Goblins are two races that are employed as “mercenaries” in the basic game, and I loved the models and the special rules they had. But really, it was very basic, with Dwarves essentially being always bold units and Goblins being often frightened and quick to rush into battle. I was therefore eager to check out the Specialist packs that were upcoming. And finally, the first two are here!

The Dwarven Battalion Specialist Pack (Days of Wonder, 2007 – Richard Borg) is interesting, because the Dwarves now have some color as well as possibly the most interesting unit in the game. The models are very nice (the spear bearers are particularly good, as they look like they are holding a huge pointed log; and anyone using the dwarves can now wield some lethal force.

Let’s look at what the expansion pack includes (and by the way – putting both of the specialist packs, Call to Arms, and Epic in the same box now has my box bursting at the seams. You’ll need an extra box to get anything else in.)

1.)	Two new scenarios are added, The Axe and Spear and Iron Dwarf Ambush. Both of these are normal scenarios with War Councils included but are intriguing in that they allow all of the new units to be used. Normally a player, using the Call to Arms expansion, can only have two specialist cards, which means that not everything new can be used; but these scenarios give a balanced force for a fully fledged mostly dwarf army to fight against. Using a tricked-out dwarf army is intimidating, and the other side really needs to watch carefully when fighting this stodgy force.

2.)	Iron Dwarves Bagpipers: A player can use a specialist card to replace one unit with a dwarven bagpiper unit of the same color. This unit has a range of three and has the odd capability of not being able to hit the enemy. Instead, all banner and bonus hits are treated as a flag, as well as flags themselves. Thus, this band has the unique capability of focusing their music on a specific unit – hopefully causing that unit to retreat. This is deadly against goblin units, even if they are bold, and also can be devastating when utilized against a opposing creature that is in front of his own troops. Still, this is possibly one of the more subtle units the game has introduced thus far, and beginning players will most likely under-utilize it (I’ve seen this happen). It can be very effective, though, and can break enemy lines and maybe get rid of the pesky Goblin Band!

4.)	Spear Bearers: One specialist card allows a player to replace two blue banner units with two blue banner dwarf spear bearers. While I don’t understand why these units don’t get a bonus against cavalry, they do get an extra die when battling back, which makes them quite useful, since as dwarves they are bold. Notice that the goblin spear bearers are red and can advance, making them seem better; but I’ve seen the dwarves hold their own – red spear bearers for the dwarves would be too powerful, probably.

5.)	Components: The figures for all the new units look good, and if nothing else – give you more dwarf figures to wield an almost all dwarven army, if that interests you. The cards are nice, and banners and flags are included to allow a player to use the units in either army.

I’m not sure the casual BattleLore player needs to pick up this expansion, although they’re probably not reading this review anyway; but if you want the dwarves to be more than just “bold humans”, this is a step in the right direction. I don’t like it as much as the goblin specialist pack, as it doesn’t upgrade the dwarves as much; but the bagpiper units are a cool addition, and dwarf spearmen are simply formidable. I’m still a goblin fan; but when I see the bagpipers, I’m now certainly worried.

Tom Vasel
“Real men play board games”
www.thedicetower.com

These things are way cool. The biggest bonus these guys carry is your 4th point, Paul. These guys can play all sorts of havoc with an enemy that plays conservatively and holds in tight formations. A red banner bagpipe squad has a 50% chance to roll two retreats in one attack opening up a formation to safe attack.

And they are ranged, gaining use of Darken the Skies and the 6 or so Lore cards that increase ranged attacks. Notice too that they can move and ranged attack without losing a die in the process. Fricken sweet! I don't care that they don't do real damage. They are a very nice strategic element. I can't wait for these to be released. I just wonder how the other specialist cards and units will work.

Here's what I came up with off the top of my head (and feel free to add your own devious ideas):

-Attack terrified units and laugh as they kill themselves with panic losses.

-Attack units with no retreat route and laugh as they kill themselves trying to get away from that wretched sound.

-Attack creatures with no retreat route and laugh as they trample the poor schlubs behind them.

-Break up formations, so that your enemy gets no battle-backs.

-Knock that annoying goblin band out of the hexes that straddle two sections.

Hey, these things are pretty cool! I'm most pleased with how the specialist packs are shaping up.

2 units of cavalry are hardly going to upset the balance. They could easily be a 1 cav for 2 foot trade or replace 1 human unit with a dwarf of equal banner.

This isn't an issue with balance at the moment. Instead, I think each army will eventually become their own playstyles. Currently, all we have are mercenaries. Eventually, I'm sure new deployment cards will be released that only certain camps can use. In the case of Dwarven Units, you might have no cavalry on any of the cards. You might have to use a Specialist Cavalry card to use just one human horseman.

Of course, I'm just talking about subjective material here. I would be happy if they release anything for the game, as long as it fits in theme and balance. Ram riding dwarves sounds like a neat idea, and probably would be a fine addition to a dwarven army. It would be interesting to see Borg walking off the beaten path to make a slightly more maneverable dwarven army. It would make Battlelore dwarves that much more distinctive.

Not me. I'll be happy if it does just that. I don't want these pieces to be an escalation of power.

I don't want to see a swing in power level either. That is not what I am calling for. What I want are interesting mechanics and cool, but balanced units. To me, if all the spear bearers do is get all their bonus strikes against cavalry, well that is boring and not worth having.

I am also hard pressed to guess on how they will be implemented on their Specialist Card and be balanced. It can't just put two units into play or swap 2 for 1 (or 2 for 2 for dwarves) without making the Goblin Mercenaries card (and dwarf swapper card) obsolete. If getting all bonus strikes against cavalry is their only ability (as you are hoping) then they just seem nearly pointless to field over other units. Why should I take their Specialist Card over all the others when they give me so little?

Another option, which might make them worth while (though I'm not so sure), is if they are not their own units, but are added to other foot units as the goblin drummers can be. Then they give the unit the ability to bonus strike against cavalry, but are the first to be removed when the units take hits (they are the front line). Something to that effect.

Anyway, this is all just speculation. Maybe someone else has an idea on how these speculated spear bearers (bonus strike on cav) are implemented in a balance and interesting way.

If the pack doesn't match your playstyle, don't buy it. I think it's an excellent business stragety myself.

Poor Gobbos, seems like nobody likes them as much as those beefy Dwarfs...

This is a completely understandable asseration. In the base Battlelore, there isn't a scenerio that uses the Red Goblins. Red Gobilns are the crowning glory of Goblins. Greens are useless, as they don't pick up anything for using Goblin Rush and instead just pick up the Goblin Run ability. It's not that goblins themselves are not weak, it's the selection that are in the base book.

Less Green Goblins!

No Cavalry! Sure, I guess they are called "Specialist Packs" so they should have "special" units as opposed to basic foot soldiers and archers, but come on! I want more crossbowmen and heavy dwarf and goblin infantry without having to buy another set of the base game. I really don't want to pay $70 for the 6 units I want out of it. So how come these sets don't have more of these figures? We need more basic stuff to get the game going. Save the "specialists" for later.

And the band and bagpipers seem cool, but I will be pretty upset if all the spear guys do is always get bonus strikes against cavalry.
