Thread: Re: Clarification on expansions needed

One more point:

Each elf has special powers that are outlined on a role card in the basic box. Paladin has 4 hits, ranger can split his move etc. These powers are laid on top of the basic HeroCard deck to make a complete elf hero.

You may actually use any HeroCard hero deck as one of the elves. The Prince from Shogun is my favorite (after the orcs of course). You would then want to add the abilities from one of the elf role cards to make a complete hero.

Peter
You can even take a character deck from any of the other HeroCard games and use it to play any of the elves. Thematically it doesn't quite jive but it is certainly playable. When I play this 3 or 4 players we use generic decks for the Ranger and Sorceress.

Thread: Re: Clarification on expansions needed

Yes you can. The Paladin elf is a character, just like the Ranger and Sorceress are characters. The orcs can face 1-3 elves, playing any of the characters. So you can play any of the characters you want, you don't have to always play as the paladin.

Thread: Clarification on expansions needed

I understand that the base game is Orcs vs. Paladin Elves. And that you can add expansions: Ranger Elves and Sorceress Elves. These allow for more players (3 and 4) to join in. But here's my question that I don't see addressed elsewhere (maybe because I don't quite understand the game): can the Ranger expansion be used to substitute for the base games' Paladin Elves? So then you could have Orcs vs. Rangers or Orcs vs. the Sorceress? Trying to understand how this all fits together.

Thread: Re: Variable Value Card Question

Variable value cards are dynamic, so their values can change as more cards become active. In other words, yes, Spin Parry would go up to +9 if you subsequently played a third Block.

An "in play" card is any card on an attribute stack. An "active" card is an "in play" card that was played during the current attack sequence. Some players place their active cards with a little space separating them, then collapse them down into a more compact stack after the attack sequence ends. This give you a visual cue as to which cards are active and which are merely in play from before.

Thread: Variable Value Card Question

Hello,

I have a question about variable value cards, like the Ranger's Nature's Ward & Spin Parry.

Is the value of the card fixed at the time of play, or does it go up if another trigger card is played? For example, if I play Spin Parry with two block cards active for +6, then play another block afterwards, does the Spin Parry go up to +9?

While we're at it, is there a substantive difference between "in play" and "active"? I've been treating them as both the same states, but I just want to make sure.

Thanks very much.

The first squad often does not have engough power to get a wound. This especially true with only 4 bases in the squad. It is then up to another squad to move in and start another attack sequence. This will require the elf player to play another Base Block etc.

Sometimes a single elf can swoop in and score the hit with a single card after a big battle has clogged up the target elf.

If I choose to always keep one orc separated from the squad, that squad gets 4 less attribute points, right? Let's say I had 2 brutes, 2 tacticians, and 1 shaman. If I kept them together in a squad of 5 I'd have 8B 8M 4X but if I kept one of the tacticians at a safe distance from the rest of the squad I'd have 8B 4M 4X. I guess that's the price I have to pay in that scenario to keep from getting wiped out.

Thread: Re: a basic question about attack

The blocker does not have to completely block the attack in order for the attack sequence to continue (IOW, to be able to continue playing cards later). The attack sequence continues until both players pass consecutively. The attack only succeeds if it exceeds the block after the attack sequence has ended.

For example, I attack you for 7, then you play a card that lets you draw 3. My attack is currently winning, but the attack sequence isn't over yet. It's my "priority" to play, but I pass because my attack is winning. It's now your priority, so you play base block 5 and block mod +4 as a set. Now the block is winning and the attack sequence continues with my opportunity to play a card or set of cards. And so on.

Thread: Re: a basic question about attack

The attacker's total Attack Value must beat the defender's total Block Value for the attack to be successful. A tie rules in the defender's favor.

Note that if a Block succeeds, the attack is thwarted, but nothing else happens. The Blocker does not damage the Attacker. Only if an attack succeeds does the "game state" change, ie. a successful attack damages an Elf, kills an Orc, or kills a boar in Orc Wars.

A successful attack in other HeroCard games might capture peasants, steal a treasure, knock an opponent's pawn to a neutral space, etc. In all cases a successful block does nothing else than prevent a successful attack.

Thanks for the prompt reply. That does make sense.

The question came up playing the Orc Camp. The Elves had wiped out the first 2 Clans & they were coming up against the next line of Orc defence. We were thinking that the Sorceress would be great for tying up the Clan lining up to meet them before the Ranger & Paladin went in. In retrospect that would be pretty unpleasant for the Orcs as they have a hard enough time clearing down there stacks to enable them to attack the Elves & still defend against them.

Super game. The artwork attracted me at first, but after our first couple of games the tactical nuances are becoming apparent & I'm looking forward to my next game.

In HeroCard Orc Wars, you need to be adjacent to your target to play cards against them.

For example, the Sorceress is next to the Bruised Fists and the Scorchers are a couple of hexes away. If she wants to play "Domination" on the Bruised Fists, she can, and the Orc player must put down two cards next to the Bruised Fists card.

If she wants to get the Scorchers, she needs to move next to them, the play "Domination." Then the Orc player puts down two cards next to the Scorchers card.

Thread: Re: Special Blocks - what's the relation to Block Mods?

Just in case Peter's answer isn't 100% clear, the restriction on special blocks is that they can't be played as part of a "set". You have to play the special card by itself, which causes priority to pass to your opponent. The opponent then has an opportunity to play a card in response to your special card, before you can continue playing further blocks.

In other words, the restriction only applies to the timing of when cards are played. Playing a special block in no way restricts your ability to play other cards within an overall attack sequence.

chuman wrote:
so what happens to any Block Mods I played before the Special Block? Are they now invalidated? Or are you perhaps not allowed to play a Special Blocks once you have played a Block Mod?

No - You may play these cards in either order and one type does not limit the play of the other type later. Nor does one card invalidate the play of a prior card.

The issue of timing becomes clear if you look at the rules for sets on page 10 of the Orc Wars rules:

"When you play cards during an Attack Sequence, you may play a single card or a set of cards. A set may contain Bases and/or Mods only. For example, you could play a Base Attack and two Attack Mods as a set, or two Base Blocks and a Block Mod. Since an Attack Sequence may only contain one Base Attack, you may not play multiple Base Attacks as part of a set. You may not play Special Attacks, Special Blocks, or Miscellaneous cards as part of a set. Such cards must always be played singly."

In basic HeroCard you may play only 1 'Exlusive' action card on your turn. This generally means that you will only be able to play one Base Attack card. This can be played in a set with 1 or more Attack Mods in one throw. Blocks on the other hand do work differently because both Base Blocks and Block Mods are 'Fast' actions. This means that in one play you could throw down 2 Base blocks and a Block Mod as on set.

Again you may not play any Special Attack of Special Block cards in a set with any other cards.

Peter - The Orc King

No No and NO! The orcs keep reinforcing forever. As long as there is one member of the clan still on the board that clan can reinforce as allowed. This of course means that often time is on the side of the orcs since no matter how many die they will keep coming back.

Peter - The orc king

Thread: Special Blocks - what's the relation to Block Mods?

Hi,
in the rulebook it is stated that once you play a Special Block, you are not allowed to play Block Mods anymore. OK... so what happens to any Block Mods I played before the Special Block? Are they now invalidated? Or are you perhaps not allowed to play a Special Blocks once you have played a Block Mod?

There are some subtle differences in the duelling system between Attacks and Blocks and the dependencies that exists between Base cards, Mod cards and Special cards. The rules are not the same for Attacks and Blocks and while the rulebook is quite clear on most of the differences, I can't figure out the ambiguity in the language used for Blocks. Please help.. and thanks if you do.

Thread: Orc reinforcement - what's the upper limit?

So I get the bit that you can only have up to 5 members in a clan (potentially spread over many squads) - I mean it's physically impossible to represent any more in the game as there is only 5 bases for each clan. However, in a previous (somewhat related) post, I got the impression that reinforcing is only allowed up to 5 EVER for a clan. So if your clan starts out for example with 3 members, does this mean you can only reinforce a further 2 during the entire game?

Another way of putting this, once a clan has had 5 distinct members over the course of a game, you cannot reinforce it anymore, even if it's membership total drops again due to losses to a number lower than 5.

What say you?

Thread: "Waste" mechanic with the "Disarm" card

Hi, played a few fun games of Orc Wars earlier today, but ran into something that bothers me... The Disarm card instructs you to "waste" a base attack card from your opponent's hand. In an earlier thread someone wrote as follows with regards to how this should be done:

"As for Disarm, it uses the "waste" mechanic. Which means the target player must choose a Base Attack (if he has multiple) and place it on the appropriate Attribute. If this exceeds his Attribute points, it gets discarded. If it doesn't it stays on the table but doesn't mean he has attacked. It "wastes" your card and clogs your Attribute.

Note that if you don't have a Base Attack, then nothing happens."

This is all pretty clear to me, but here's my problem: how do I know my opponent REALLY does not have a Base Attack card. Are we actually looking at a rule here that requires you to trust your opponent's gaming ethics? After all, you're not allowed to check out your opponent's deck content, so you cannot verify whether or not you're being lied to. Can this be or am I missing something?

Thanks for any replies in advance.

Thread: Beautiful Artwork on a Fantasy Epic Adventure

As soon as I saw the first images of the cards I had to buy this game. That was about 3 days after the game was released and a week later I was enjoying this jewel.

Components
10 big Hexagonal dual side map tiles, 1 paladin miniature, 1 orc king figure, 21 orc figures with their bases, 1 paladin deck, 1 orc deck, 19 extra cards, 11 squad tokens, 5 treasure tokens and 14 wound markers.

The tiles that shape the boardgame are pretty cool, they come in hard stock coated paper that is very resistant to almost everything. The scenarios printed are caves and forests. The caves have all the mood of a "diablo" style adventure and the forests reminded me a lot the mood of "sacred".

The paladin miniature is a very well made plastic sculpture and is used to represent the elf hero that fights the hordes of orcs that threaten his land with destruction.

The orc figure is like the other orcs and many elements of the game made of stylene (pirates of the spanish main ships) but do not be fooled by it's flattness as the artwork is really beautiful and the detail prevails having on one side the front of the orc king and on the other side its back (yeap, they took the job to even deal with this detail). Within the same card are also included 5 treasures that represent elements a hero might find in a scenario that will increase his abilities during the game.

The orc clans come in several stylene cards of standard size (same size as the pirates of the spanish main cards), very detailed, also representing front and back of the beasts. In this cards are also included other elements of the game including boars that are pretty cool to play with. They assemble and work as stand up figurines with interchangeable bases that you can addapt to the needs of your game (the bases represent the clans that will be used).

And finally the characters' cards. This is the core of the game and where the most beautiful artwork exists. I cannot tell you how pleased I am with the quality of these cards. The drawings are by far better than WOW card game, full of bright colors and details. Please let me invite you to check them in the gallery because you will not be disappointed.

Gameplay

The Herocard system is common to all the Tablestar Games LLC's games. It allows you to use a deck of cards to do combat. Each hero and clan have 3 attributes (mind, body, and a special one). When you attack or defend you place a card in these attributes and wait for your opponent to do the same. In a series of rounds each spend as many cards as the attribute points allow you. The one that has done the more damage wins the round. If you are defending, your opponent must place a bigger attack number than your defense to hit you and you must do the same thing on your turn. But be careful because if you spend too many cards clouding your attributes on an attack you might not be able to defend yourself.

In this game the board game represents the area of play in which an elf hero is at war with the orc clans. The hero is pretty strong and can wipe out an entire clan if the conditions are given. But the orcs with their king are also strong enough to bleed the hero to death. On a series of scenarios each player takes a side and accomplishes a mission moving the hero or the orcs on a confrontation that will be solved by the Herocard system. Only one can win and it will be the one that can handle his/her resources in a tactical way.

Luck also has it's component as the cards are draw randomly but the game is very strategic, with each side well balanced. On a first sight the elf seems to be on disadvantage as he alone is fighting the horde of orcs but be sure he has his tricks waiting on his deck.

There is also a duel mode where you can play against another player just using the cards. Thanks to the Herocard system you can even play against heroes of other Tablestar games. So why not try a samurai vs. orc combat and see the results of this clash of eras. It will surely be fun.

Conclusion

I enjoyed this game very much, not only because of the beautiful artwork, the plastic miniature, the stylene clans, the cool treasures and the mobile board game but also for the transportability of it's components. I certainly enjoy to have a pocket board game with this quality. It is very easy to learn, has 2 expansions that add 2 more heroes with their own set of gorgeously made cards and miniature and it's all wrapped in a strong 15x22cm box. The manual is very well explained, introducing you first to the herocards system in detail and later to it's implementation into the theme. May I recommend this game to any fan of a good ORC vs ELF game, to all fantasy lovers and definitely to all those that like to have quality on their board games.

Tablestar Games, makes a stand here saying "we'll be around for a long while".

And by the way, let me tell you that I am very glad to announce that the customer service is awesome. They treat you with the highest respect, and answer any problem high speed and with EMS postal service. Understand please that I live in Argentina and in less than a week I received their mail. So buy with confidence as you will be getting an awesome game you could take anywhere you go.

Brent has it correct. You Clear 3 cards period, NOT 3 cards per Attribute.

I see each Orc Clan as a "character" in of itself and such each Clan Clears 3.

As for Disarm, it uses the "waste" mechanic.

Note that if you don't have a Base Attack, then nothing happens.

You remove the three top cards of your choice. If these stars represent cards then you couldn't remove the first played card in the mind or X factor stack without first removing the top card in each stack.
In other words you remove the cards one at a time but only the top showing card of each stack is available to be removed. Once a card is uncovered it can be removed.

M:

B:

X:

I believe the Disarm removes the card from the opponents hand. Do I remove 3 cards from each attribute or just 3 top cards of my choice ?

Another thing: the Disarm card of the orcs deck removes a base attack from the hand of target hero or does it remove it from one already play and active ?

Thanks.

Correct!

If you were to position the above mentioned Squad 1 and Squad 2 so that they were all adjacent, then you would have 1 large squad with 12 Body, 4 Mind, and 4 X.

Thanks.

another question - since a squad consists of adjacent clan orcs. So if I move 2 squads from similar clans such that I have 5 adjacent orcs, I would have a total of 12 body, 4 mind and 4 X to utilise right?
