Hey thank you for the review. Nice job!

I am convinced of not getting this game and reading your review just again sealed my opinion. I enjoy Runebound and am not to crazy about Talisman. Just not my cup of tea. Runebound fulfills my fix and if not that Descent hits my other spot.

@ Gene

Interesting style of review, nice work!

It's sad to see progeny that loses out on one of the greatest strengths, to my mind at least, of its forebears: strong(ish) narrative that develops during the game.

Talisman is like that crazy uncle who made up stories out of thin air for you when you were a kid (maybe that kind of uncle is rare, though, it's a pity they aren't more common). The story might not always have made a lot of sense but hell was it fun!

I'm just about to start on Runebound, but it looks like it generates a more coherent storyline as you play. The expansions look like they keep the static boards and themes from getting too stale.

Without some kind of narrative an adventure game just doesn't take me where I want to go. I guess I'll wait 'til one of my buddies who's addicted to WoW picks this up so I can see what it's like.

Nice work - I haven't checked into the other reviews of this game, but your review hits on the subject matter nicely. (Well, other than the whole WoW:BG being a whore...)

Thread: WOW:TBG, Runebound, and Talisman walk into a bar: a paternity analysis of WOW:TAG

Intro: As a geneticist that specializes in paternity determination (cases) I have to admit my latest client had me quit stumped.

She had an odd name; World of Warcraft: The Boardgame, or WOW:TBG as she liked to be called. Her story was even odder. Apparently, nine months ago, she was at a party with some other boardgames. Two in particular were hitting on her pretty hard. One of the guys was named “Runebound” and he liked to flaunt his “complexity”. The other guy was called “Talisman” and apparently he was kind of a snot who liked to mess with people’s minds a lot. Long story short, after way too many jello shooters, she found herself waking up in bed with both these dudes sleeping soundly on either side of her. Her memory of the night completely shot, she decided it best to slink out of there and forget the whole thing ever happened.

But then nine months later came baby, a little tyke she calls World of Warcraft: The Adventure game (she calls him TAG for short).

This is where I come in. My job is to identify the father of this little bundle of joy, and I know it won’t be easy. Normally, a DNA sample would be all I would need, but with this child not having any DNA, I would need to assess a number of key adventure boardgame traits.

Theme: Obviously, TAG is his mother’s child. The world, characters, and even the miniatures were the same as his mom’s. TAG shares only the general “fantasy” theme with both potential fathers leaving not much to go on.

Movement/board: Here’s a trait that might help. TAG’s relatively simple “roll and move” mechanism is much more akin to Talisman’s system. True, TAG’s twisty, non-linear paths are something distinctly different than Talisman’s monopoly-style board, but they paid no resemblance to Runebound’s hex-spaced board. Like Talisman, and unlike Runebound, geography doesn’t play much of a role. But perhaps this is a good thing, as Runebound’s “movement dice” seem to be rather a liability in most folks’ eyes. Genotype: T (alisman)

Tiered difficulty: This is another potentially easy trait to score. In TAG there are four difficulty levels of challenges: grey, green, yellow, red . You start out on the easy grey encounters and earn the ability to access harder challenges by leveling. This is much more akin to Runebound’s system of tiered challenges, albeit a different color scheme: green, yellow, and red. This leaves the difficulty of the challenges faced in the hands of the player instead of the game. Indeed, in Talisman you are just as likely to encounter a boar as you are a dragon, regardless of your character’s advancement. Genotype: R (unebound)

Winning the game: This is a toughie, as all three have very different winning conditions. TAG is a race to complete quests, Runebound is a race to beat the “big boss”, and Talisman is a race to the Crown of Command (followed by zapping all of the other players into oblivion). On the surface, this trait is hard to score; however, I have seen the quest system before…in Runebound’s Sands of Al-Kalim. In fact, I personally like the quest driven system in SoAK than the “boss” end-game of vanilla Runebound. Although it isn’t a clear call, I’m calling this one in favor of Runebound. Genotype: R (unebound)

Downtime: One of the promises in TAG is reduced downtime between players’ turns. One of the largest complaints of Runebound is the hideous downtime. You never hear this complaint about Talisman. The downtime in Runebound is extended in part because things like movement and combat are just more complex in Runebound; there’s a lot more to “figure out.” With their simplified movement and combat mechanisms, down-time in TAG and Talisman are, thankfully, kept to a minimum. Genotype: T(alisman).

Player interaction: TAG certainly did not inherit its level of player interaction from Runebound! Runebound has frequently been accused of being “multi-player solitaire” and the charge is not unwarranted. The player interaction in Runebound comes from PvP combat, which rarely happens because it is such a pain to play out (oh, players can trade with each other too…like that is going to happen). However, player interaction abounds in TAG. It comes in the form of quests that force a player to attack or otherwise annoy other players; it comes in the form of the action decks in which some actions purposely mess with other players. Talisman also has a good deal of player interaction, due to spells and special character powers. Unlike Talisman, though, player interaction in TAG seems a bit forced on you, especially with the quests. Still, I would have to score this one as more Talsiman-like. Genotype: T (alisman)

Combat: Roll a die, add numbers and compare; highest number wins. Happens in TAG, happens in Talisman. Simple and quick. This helps decrease the downtime and makes the game more accessible to those who don’t want to think too much with fighting monsters. Runebound’s combat, with three phases, attacking, defending, allies, etc. requires a bit more planning and strategy at the risk of analysis paralysis. Genotype: T (alisman).

Action decks: Certainly, at the heart of playing TAG are the class-specific action decks. Believe it or not, though, this is NOT a new concept; it is completely inherited from Runebound! I’ve seen this mechanism before in the form of the Runebound class decks. Of course Runebound has to complicate everything with the concept of “menance” and making the decks potentially customizable (and therefore not necessarily well-tuned out of the box). I would say that TAG does the action deck “better”. Cards are paid for by mana earned with the movement dice (the less you get to move, the more power you get), and the decks are finely tuned to the character. Of course nothing like this exists in Talisman. Genotype: R (unebound).

Character development: In TAG, the goal of the game is to complete quests, not develop your character. There is leveling and random items can be gained to improve abilities, however all the stats are chosen for you. There just isn’t any need to develop your character because most of the powers come from the action deck. This is the opposite of Runebound in which character development is crucial for being able to tackle tougher opponents and from WOW:TBG, its mother, in which character development IS the game. Talisman has character development, but you don’t have much control over it (it’s mostly determined by the random items/encounters you meet). So, I’m going to have to score this in favor of Talisman. Genotype: T (alisman)

Narrative: We finally arrive at the last trait, and unfortunately, it’s hard to score this one. While TAG seems to have inherited the best of traits from Talisman and Runebound (downtime, interaction, simple movement, action decks, etc.), it seems to lack the story-driven narrative that makes those games so fun to play. Certainly, Runebound’s narrative is very rich. Yes, it is a generic fantasy world, but it has evolved into something much more. Each game tells a very unique story depending on the monsters encountered and each character’s development. Heck, people HAVE written stories based on their games! Talisman’s narrative isn’t as strong; there are no “named” monsters, for example, and the variety of creatures, at least in the base game, isn’t very large. Still, even games of Talisman tell a story...albeit a bit of a rambling one. There just isn’t a strong narrative feel to TAG. Sure there are quest “plots”, but they aren’t very engaging or memorable, and the quests eventually boil down to archtypes (like delivery quests or attack quests). The monsters never seem to come to life, and you might as well just be fighting a bunch of numbers. In this respect, TAG is his mother’s child. WOW:TBG also seems to lack a strong narrative…monsters become defined by their numbers and flavor text is soon forgotten. The adventuring “feel” isn’t entirely missing, thanks in part to the thematic action decks; however, no strong story emerges after playing. Genotype: Neither?

Assessment:
So to recap the genotypes of TAG:

Movement/board: T
Tiered difficulty: R
Quest driven: R
Downtime: T
Player interaction: T
Combat: T
Action decks: R
Character development: T
Narrative: N/A
Genotype: TRRTTTRT

It’s a tough call who the “father” of this TAG is. It seems that BOTH Talisman AND Runebound contributed a little somrthin’ somethin’, making TAG some sort of weird triple hybrid; not possible with people, but apparently O.K. for boardgames. I will say, with the notable exception of the lack of a strong narrative, TAG mostly inherited the best traits from BOTH of its fathers.
Thread: Character Pack Design Notes!

On November 20th, on the Fantasy Flight Games official site, they posted design notes on the Shaman to be released in the character pack:

http://new.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=214

YAY SHAMAN!

Question remains: when will they release all the packs?
Thread: Re: Good for a non boardgaming WoW fan?

Thanks for that Ron, I actually had a chance to watch some of a game being played at Midcon the weekend before. Admittedly it was after midnight after a full days gaming, so I was probably not at the top of my mental cycle, but it looked like the game might appeal to the audience I'm planning it for. We shall see come Christmas, but either way I don't expect to be introducing Agricola in the near future.

Sounds like you already made up your mind - but thought I would offer a real world example (that fortunately will reinforce your decision). I just attended BGG.con for the first time this weekend. I brought a non-gamer friend with me. He's a huge fan (understatement) of the computer game WoW. I'd never played any of the warcraft boardgames, but picked up the adventure game from the BGG library (knowing it was the shorter of the two). We figured out the rules and played it twice over the weekend. My friend really enjoyed the game - and the familiarity added a great deal to his enjoyment. Playing this game first ended up being a great decision, as he became much more open to some of the heavier eurogames (I actually had him asking to play just one more game of Agricola by the end of the weekend).

I think you made a good choice.

Thread: Re: What character are you dying to get your hands on?

Now, the question is, are they going to continue making character packs (like the priest) or are they going to make board expansions? The Dark Portal is featured on the board so I'm guessing an Outland board will be available next. Then a Northrend one (which would be wicked!)

Thread: Re: WoW:TAG or Runebound ?

WOW:tag and Runebound are both good games. Runebound has the depth of strategy and character choice/advancement to keep you coming back for more, whenever you have 5-8 hours to kill.
WOW:tag is basically Runebound for people who either A)don't have 8 hours to spend on a game or B) suffer from gamer-ADD. The latter isn't a slam on a person, but there ARE those that play games that cannot focus past 2 hours on a single game. THOSE are the ones that WOW:taq is for.

I appreciate what the leadership at WOW is attempting, creating a WOW product for as many groups as possible. You have WOW:tbg for those diehard players that just want to play all day, WOW:tag for those that want to play a couple of hours, WOW:tcg for those that want to play one on one in a strategic game, WOW:cmg for those that want a 30 minute skirmish, WOW:tbc for those that are just hungry to eat a Murlock (OOPS! that musta just been last nights nightmare! I guess there ISN'T a The Breakfast Cereal yet!) You gotta love a company that steamrolls the public with their license to try and find anyone to buy it! It beats those companies that create a license and put out one game, only to let it languish alone on the shelves and wonder why they didn't get any interest in the game after the 5th year of print. Or those companies that only know how to put out expansions for their "one-hit-wonder" and can't figure out why their fan-base hasn't expanded.

I personally can't wait till 2011 when WOW:The MOVIE opens the way for WOW:the Series to show up on SciFi!

Being a fan and player of WoW: The PC Game, I encourage any activity that gets you away from the computer. Goodness knows I spend too much time in front of mine as it is.

But, to your question....

WoW: TAG is a faster game but is less involved than WoW: TBG.

WoW: TBG will take a good 15 to 30 minutes to setup and takes a lot of space while WoW: TAG will only take you about 5 minutes and can be played comfortably around your standard 4 chair table.

WoW: TAG is much lighter for rules and will be easier to pick up that WoW: TBG.

WoW: TAG does not have character customization other than the randomness of drawing ability cards; while WoW: TBG allows you to customize your character at great length.

Ultimately, what you need to consider is if this game is for a lover of board game or a gift that shares the same name of the video game they are playing. If the receiver of the gift is a board game enthusiast, they will find merit in both games. If the intended is not big on board games or has little experience, then definitely go with WoW: TAG as it is lighter, easier, and less involved than its big brother, WoW: TBG.

The original board game has a LOT of stuff, and takes over 3 hrs to play. If your WoW fans have a short attention span (or even a normal one, in my opinion) it's not for them. I say go for the Adventure Game first. Lots of PvP encouragement, and interaction. Also little downtime and less calculation compared to the original board game is nice.

But as far as closeness to the video game, the original WoW game is best. If you do get that, get the Shadows of War expansion, it makes the game a lot better.

Wow, that would be a really cool idea, basing the items/monsters off of the character packs! and yeah, we REALLY want some sheilds over here, because i feel empty without them .
Yeah, the game doesn't have enough shields or such, bah. Perhaps shields should act as reroll, and give +1 defense? That might make some characters OP though...imagine a warrior or paladin with Dark Iron Armor (9 defense) and a shield...they'd have to make shields with special abilities rather than defense bonuses, perhaps.

Looks like quite a few websites selling the character packs have reduced prices from $11.99 to $9 or sometimes even $7.53, with free shipping. The release date is apparently the 30th of November. Isn't that basically December? -_-

Sorry but I have never played WoW online. I do have WoW: The Boardgame and WoW: The Adventure game. I love the Boardgame but the Adventure game I find is very disappointing, probably because I love its big brother. However those unfamiliar with boardgames in general may very well enjoy the Adventure game. Anyone who has played the online game will know all the places listed on the board, will know about the 3 character types the come with the game, it doesn't take long to play, is fairly straightforward and has lots of replayability due to the tons of cards that comes with it. Several character packs are due in the next month or two and of course it has FFG's usual quality components.
As I said earlier, I have no experience with the online version but the Adventure game could be a great intro to 'real' boardgames for guys like these. Plus it's pretty reasonably priced

Neither have any great history with boardgames, being much more into Video games, but one is also keen on Games Workshop's Warhammer miniatures games.

I have never played World of Warcraft in any of its forms, so thought I ask for opinions of users of this site who may know more than me.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I really would like all of them, the Shaman because I play one in the computer game (Tauren, Level 70), the Rogue because they're strange and I want to see how they translate the Rogue's ganking moves into the board game, the Paladin because I want to see how he 'tanks' and heals both, and the Druid because they're all round amazing.

I hope the Packs are themed around the characters, so that the Paladin introduces some more maces, shields, etc to the game, and quests revolving around slaying demons and undead for instance, while the Rogue relies on surreptitious travelling and passing through aggro mobs without a scratch (and maybe using the resources on that square anyway).

So anyway, when do they come out?
I also received confirmation from Corey. His answer follows:

You MAY have multiple encounters in a single space. In your example, you would fight Halycon (the one you drew), and search for the Gizrul card and place him as an undefeated encounter in the space. You would NOT execute any text on the Gizrul card.

I hope that this answers your question!
-Corey Konieczka
Fantasy Flight Games
Design and Development

In this threat Kris mentions the following:

Kris wrote:
I got confirmation from Corey, Scott is right :

"It is possible for there to be multiple encounters in a single space. If there is more than one in a space, the current player decides which one to attack (he must choose an aggro one if able). If Burbonn is in a space with one of his own traps, he ignores it and draws a challenge card."

So it seems that it is possible to have multiple encounters.

The problem is cards are one shot only. Since they are distributed fairly evenly between pvp and pve, it would be harder to build up a decent hand to take on a boss, particularly as there is no automatic hand refreshing.

Maybe you could make the cards last the whole combat, but requiring a new energy cost each use.

Thread: Re: Multiple monsters in a board space?

The two cards we are dealing with are in the red encounter deck and are named "Gizrul the Slavener" and "Halycon".

When drawn, Grizrul makes you search for Halycon and place it at the Alter of Storms. Likewise, if Halycon is drawn, it makes you search for Gizrul and place it on Jintha'Alor.

Essentially, one wolf causes the other to spawn on the board.

So, what happens if you are on Jintha'Alor and draw the encounter card "Halycon"?

At first glance, I would assume that both encounters stay because one encounter is drawn for the space (Halycon) and that encounter summons another one to the exact same space (Grizrul).

But this breaks the one encounter per space rule.

I think what we got here is a loophole that can easily be circumvent by simply reading the text of both cards and retroactively doing what both say.

In other words, regardless of what wolf you draw, you will only encounter one as one will always go to Jintha'Alor and one will always go to the Alter of Storms.

For example, Todd lands his character in Jintha'Alor and draws Halycon. Todd looks through the red encounter deck and pulls Gizrul. Reading the text of both cards, Haylcon is instantly moved to the Alter of Storms (via Gizrul) and Gizrul remains. Reverse if Gizrul is drawn first at the Alter of Storms. In this fashion, there is only one encounter and the game board is appropriately populated.

Anyways, that's how I would do it.

On a side note, I am sending a request to Fantasy Flight Games to give us an official ruling. Once I get it, I'll post it here.

I, for one already knew this, though, and thought this was rather a thread about what characters do you want most, not what charas do you expect in the next pack.

If you're interested in the discussion about what the packs contain, it's been done to boredome here: http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/327403

angra_mainyu wrote:
wait a minute, i thought that they were only going to do the characters from the first world of warcraft board game. was their a tauren druid in that one? and yeah, i am also guessing that the night elfs druid will be balanced, cause he was in the other game.

The first World of Warcraft board game contained one character of each class and each alignment. There are, together with the Burning Crusade expansion, a grand total of 18 named and designed characters that most certainly will be released as character packs for this game. The discussion in the other thread was mainly about that, while $12 each sounds cheap, it'll be ridiculously expensive as a total, as 4 extra characters are more expensive than the whole base game, that came with 4 characters and the whole board + cards!

Moreover, Moondream was not specified as a balance druid in the first game. In World of Warcraft: the boardgame, you can spec your class precisely as you wish. In Wow:adventure game, however, they come with a fixed ability deck, representing their spec.

Edit: Edited for blindness.

it depends on the monsters. grey monsters get only one health, same with green. some of the higher green and yellow get 2 health, and red gets 3. i really think that the overlords should get more than one health, i mean c'mon, the almighty kel'thuzad shouldn't go down by some wimpy frost bolt, or some death coil. i jut hope they do something to the overlords if they ever get a big box expansion, cause they die to quickly, despite the fact tha they can hurt us, but we can always shrug off 3-4 damage.

I'm dying for the tauren druid, and a Moonkin druid. Hopefully they'll convergate, but I think the tauren druid's going to be feral, with the night elf druid being balance.

And I'm SO going to use a Wildkin mini from the WoW:board game instead.

Interesting...

I thought the rules were very plain that you couldn't have more than one encounter/monster per space.

Now I have to go look this one up.

Yes to being able to use it. BUT! you must card combo to be effective, or else your just gonna get hurt. you can do what i do, and summon them, then curse them or plant a seed of corruption on them, and then summon you steed to bolt outta there. or you can use it from the maximum distance (8 spaces) to keep that warrior from getting to that overlord he need to kill to win, then just run their yourself. there are many ways, just find one that suits your tastes!

My character is the paladin, and i wished he came, i love the healing spells he has, and the auras in this game will probraly attach to him making him a tank. but i gota wait till november (or later if FFG is late). what character are you guys waiting for?

So I guess in a "Encounter + Encounter" situation, you could work things out like you described.

Thread: Multiple monsters in a board space?

Hello, we were playing this for the first time this weekend, and we were sort of confused what to do when there are more than one monster in a space on the board.

Case in point. I had moved to Jintha'alor, and took a challenge (one of the two wolves from lower blackrock spire in the computer game). The wolf said "search challenge deck for the other wolf and place it at jintha'alor".

I ended up playing an improved blink to skip the combat and move away from there (ignoring aggro), but what would happen if I had later moved to that space?

Would I get the choice of which of these wolves I challenged, and if I killed it stay for another turn and challenge the other?

Thread: Re: WoW:TAG or Runebound ?

If you want a game that can be played by the brain-dead I suggest you go for World of Borecraft: the Adventure Game !!! Just the ticket if you want one character to run rampant across the board while the other three struggle with life !!! While Runebound doesn't offer huge scope for strategy at least some does exist. Comnbine that with balanced characters and a HUGE number of mini to medium, low-cost expansions and I believe it is so much more worthwhile. I would also encourage you to get the Sands of Al-Kalim expansion. Some serious fun can be had here !!
