Don't add too many non-ware cards. The whole idea is to make the ware cards scarce.

Follow the recommended setup, even if all the cards are so nice and it feels bad to leave some of them out.

The deck allows for some flux. The rules say the deck should be 120 cards total, but that you can change it from game to game if you want.

The expansion rules say that there should be the same number of ware cards as other cards, but the original game has 110 cards of which only 40 are ware cards.

Am I supposed to remove 30 cards from the original game or is this a mistranslation?

Thread: Re: relics - useless once each player gets one?

The thing we decided that we did not like about the relics is that the basic gameplay mindset changes. The last game when we used these I went out with 62 gold. But my wife was able to take one last turn - which enabled her to take the last relic card and gold enough to get to 63.
I don't like the fact that even if you qualify for taking two relics, you may take only one.

Walt

Thread: Re: Why remove cards from the Expansion?

A little late on the reply here... I've owned the Expansion now for quite some time and am now just about to give it a shot.

As I've followed the threads here, it's been explained that the expansion is more or less an opportunity for you to customize the card mix of the game to your liking.

So, if you play with the Artist or the Fennec and really like them, more than one copy of each has been provided so you can add them accordingly.

Everything posted here is just a suggestion to ease you into a first time use of your expansion.

So, now that this reply has come more than a year later, have you had a chance to use the expansion? What's your verdict? Do you like it?

Well now you've done it. Now I have to check the cards a little closer. Who are these people on the cards? I have it in my game bag for my Friday night game night. Hopefully another player and I will be able to play tonight. I know I will at least be looking at the expansion cards tonight. Thanks for designing such great games.

Now I've done it.

Rudiger,

I'm mostly joking around here. You've designed some of my favorite games and I'm a big fan. I only mentioned "Political Correctness" in the original post so that people would not misunderstand and pounce on me for being the PC-police.

I do appreciate the importance of good mechanics and I understand how that's a priority for many designers. I think the Jambo expansion is thematically... a little odd, but I'm not losing any sleep over it and I'm glad I purchased a copy. I was serious when I said that I liked the very low 'European presence' in the original deck, so the expansion came as a mild surprise.

Best,

Jack

Now that he's gone, let's get back to discussing Kosmos' Great White Conspiracy.

Thank you Rudiger for coming on, always love to hear from you as you are one of my favorite designers. I think the whole thing is a joke (I'm sure it was on my part and I'm pretty sure it was with the original poster too) so don't worry about it.

Just so you know, my last name is Schlickbernd because my ex-husband's great grand parents were German. My child naturally is biracial. So, no Boo on white people here!

I would use the pirate, the artist, and the zombie, but they're too jarring for me thematically. Fortunately, since the expansion doesn't come with ware cards, it all works out fine, since there aren't all that many cards in the original deck I'm keen to remove.

I think I'll only end up using 16 out of 55 cards (specifically, 16 out of the 40 cards that share the original design), but since you're free to add and subtract cards to your own liking, that works for me. Those Mangbetu Warriors are way more interesting than the "Weapons" utility card every was.

Be warned, though, there are some sledgehammer cards in the expansion that are just plain "good," whereas almost everything in the original deck requires combinations or timing to be good.

Thread: A Game of Goods-Trading in Precolonial Africa - Now With More White People!

Disclaimer:I like Jambo more and more these days. There's some truly enjoyable subtlety involved in maximizing profit and maintaining card-momentum. Great game.

So what's up with all the white people in the expansion? And please spare me any cries of "Political Correctness"; I find this element of the expansion humorous, puzzling, and a bit off-putting all at the same time. Gaming is glutted with European History themes, and one of the things I like about Jambo is the unique flavor it has as an African-themed game. I get a kick out of the lone Portuguese trader in the deck, and I'm also tickled by the Arabian Merchants that pop up. They're "guests" in the game, just like Estonia and Russia are "guests" in Ticket to Ride: Nordic Countries.

Imagine my surprise when I opened up the expansion deck. Pirates? Zombies? Painters? How many thematic boundaries can we cross at once? The Explorer I can tolerate..., the Venetian Merchant is borderline, but after a certain point, I just can't accept that a blue-eyed white woman is leading a Caravan in pre-colonial Africa. WTF?

It really feels like Dorn or Kosmos made a concerted effort to make the game 'whiter.' If I'm in the mood for some great White European gaming, I'll go play Princes of Florence.

Thread: Re: Aren't these cards overpowered?

I just got the expansion, and my immediate reaction was that a handful of these cards fit quite well within the current deck and several others do seem out of whack.

I think the horn of plenty and the crystal staff are both great utilties. The scroll does seem good in the most straightforward way possible - not really in keeping with the spirit of the game. The gatherer also seems like a blunt instrument: use up to three utility cards even if they've already been used? I disagree about the Caravan guide, though. Most often this will mean doubling one or two, unless you've expanded. And even when it means doubling three or four, those wares can easily clog your cash flow if you're not careful / set up to process them in some way.

The zombie and artist are both cards that have an interesting effect but seem thematically waaaaay out of place. Zombies? In Jambo? And why are almost all of the new people white Europeans? Totally changes the flavor of the game. I liked that the only European in the original was the Portuguese. Now there are just a bunch of white dudes, including a pirate. (And why on earth is the caravan leader a blue-eyed white woman?). I play this game to GET AWAY from all the same old European themes in boardgames.

OK, back to balance issues. I agree that Leopardskin is another "blunt instrument." He might as well say "catch up if you are losing." I think they could have left it at one ware and two cards (no gold). I'm not sure we needed the chameleon just to reinforce the value correlation between two gold and a ware (the parrot was fine). The Rhino shouldn't allow you to draw cards (way too huge of a swing).

Basically, I would consider using the following cards and scrap the rest:

Crystal Staff
Horn of Plenty
Torch Juggler
Venetian Merchant (though thematically he rubs me the wrong way)
Caravan Guide
Explorer
Butterfly
Mangbetu warrior
Shepherd (though I'm not sure I understand the choice on the card)

Best review I've come across in a while on BGG. Great work! I will buy this in short order. I'm not sure I'll ultimately prefer a faster pace or more direct conflict, but it sounds like an appreciable alternative. Glad you directed us to Dorn's recommended substitutions. That does sound a bit annoying, right out of the box.

Thread: Re: Ruling on the Store Hut?

The second part above is incorrect.

In December 2007, UADarthMaul received a reply from the designer on this issue. (See thread entitled "Another Store Hut Question".) The clarification was as follows:

Yes - the bonus occurs when you buy or sell a card (and yes you must always sell an entire card, not just pieces), however the amount of the bonus is based on the number of matching items on the ware card.

That appears to be exactly what the card says. A bonus for "each" ware. I don't know where the confusion started (probably in some translation or non-English edition because I can see no problem with the English version). So yes, with careful planning you can in some cases buy for 2 or 3 less.

I looked over the distributions and think it might be best to add half of the ware cards from a second base set. Mathematically, it should be 22.86 cards to keep the same ratio. But to keep the same ratio within the wares (of 6 wares to 3 ware cards, and between 3 alike, 2/1, and 1/1/1 cards) you want just 20.

Somewhere I did read something about the author stating you could add the ancestors in without compensating - not sure why - but if so that means only 36 new cards that need to be balanced (which would be more like 20.5 wares needed.)

I might try adding 1 extra ware of each type. In one sense, you shouldn't need it because what you are doing with them, and the places you have to put them haven't changed. But increasing the number of ware cards allow for a bad combination to happen more frequently (getting all three of the 3-alike ware cards of the same type close together) which might stress the numbers a bit. Give it a try and report back on what works best.

BTW - adding only 20 ware cards - make sure you split them into two exactly equivalent stacks - preserves the ratios and allows you to give the other half to a friend.

Sorry. I don't think this should be changed.
They are limited in the game, and the number of players and markets are the same.

If I were to add a third player (which I have thought about) I would add 50% Ware counters (3 of each) plus a large and 2 small Markets.

Yes, if you want to play with all cards from the expansion together with all cards from the main game, then you will need to add:

- 40 Ware cards from the second copy if playing by the RRG rules
or 23 Ware cards if playing by the Kosmos (and the designer's) rules

I am looking forward to hearing if the game actually works with that many cards.

Okay. In that case: the ratio between wares and others are 40:70 = 1.75
- that would mean you would have to add 22.8 ware cards to the 40 cards of the expansion.

I don't know how accurate it is - but I was informed some time ago that the pertinent sentence was badly translated. The author did not intend that we have "wares equal others" but rather that we have the ratio between wares and others in the fully expanded deck "equal" the ratio from the original game.

BTW: The author contributes to the discussion here - so you may want to check his posts. Due to the language barrier, I am not always sure what he means on specifics, but it will probably provide overall insight.

Sorry for the confusion. I had forgotten that only 40 of the 50 cards in the expansion are actually shuffled into the deck.

If you want to use all 40 cards of the first variant (6 utilities, 26 people and 8 animals) you will need to add 40 ware cards (= one base game).

The designer suggest that you remove 40 cards for the base game, if you want to play with all new cards. But if you want to ADD the expansion to the base game, you would need two sets of the base game:

1 full base game
1 full expansion
+ 40 ware cards from a second base game

Well my approach is admittedly rather subjective. I had played many games of the original version. I made a list of cards I simply didn't like, or that I found only rarely to be useful. I removed those and replaced them with some of the new ones. For me, this has really improved the game. After playing a while with this card selection I'll do the process again, and repeat until I have the mix of cards I feel is best. By the way, I've kept the ratio of card types the same. So, for example, If I remove an animal, I replace it with an animal.

Thread: Which cards to replace?

Okay, have had the Expansion hanging out in my Jambo box for a while now and for one reason or another, the game didn't get out to the table. Now, I finally get it out, play one original game and think to myself that I'll give the Expansion a whirl and I am confronted with this 'rule' on the New Beginnings card - "The number of ware cards should equal the total of the other cards"
?? What other cards? I count 40 ware cards, 65 animal/utility/people cards, two large market stands and five small market stands for a total 72; 32 more than ware cards. Now there are 40 cards in the expansion.
So what needs to equal what here?
If I add the expansion cards for New Beginnings and remove all of the original cards, ware cards and expansion cards are then equal. Is that what this means?
Original game has 72 non-ware cards. Does this mean expansion only uses the 40 total or does it mean that I remove 40 of the original and replace them with the 40 expansion. Which 40?
Rudiger's recommendation doesn't make sense to me, because it seems to indicate that if you do what he says, a number of the cards in the expansion don't get used???
I will admit to a certain thick-headedness when it comes to game rules sometimes, though hardly a neophyte.
Can somebody help me figure this out?
Only one type of ware can go into the store hut at a time. That is the ware you get the bonus on. You can change the ware in the store hut using actions, but the old ware comes out and the new ware goes in.

The bonus works on the card, not the individual items. When you buy/sell wares you buy/sell the whole card, not just pieces. Therefore, the store hut bonus works on the card as a whole. The store hut bonus is triggered once if the wares card has the same type of ware that is currently being stored in the store hut. The bonus can not be triggered more than once per ware card for each buy/sell.

Hello,

I had a few questions about the store hut and would appreciate any help....

(1) Can only 1 ware type be kept in the store hut or can different wares (e.g. tea and silk) be moved into the hut, knowing that each move costs 1 action? Or is only a single ware item kept in the hut at any time (e.g. only 1 tea not 2 teas)?

(2) If multiple wares can be moved into the store hut, which item gets the discount/bonus? The last ware moved in? All wares in the hut?

(3) Has there been any definitive ruling on how the discount/bonus is calculated? Is the discount/bonus given per item on a ware card (e.g. a ware card with 3 silks costs 0 gold (-3) to buy and 13 gold (+3) when sold because silk is in the store hut) or is the discount/bonus per ware card (e.g. a ware card with 2 silk and 1 tea costs 3 gold (-1) to buy and 12 gold (+1) when sold)?

Thanks in advance,
teddy
