Thread: Shorter variant

One of the complaints we've received is that with 5 players the game lasts too long. An easy solution, which many people have tried, is just to play one or two of the three rounds. The three-round system allows an easy customization for a shorter play.

Our prefered shorter version is a two-round game with Round 1 and Round 3, skipping Round 2. With four players the game is over in under an hour and the tougher victory conditions of Round 3 allow for a hard "push fighting" in the squares.

Nope. As I stated earlier, you get points for having a minimum (in the first round the minimum is 1, in the second round it is 2, in the third round it is 2 and 3 if you want double points). Having more than the minimum does not give you additional points.

I hope this clarifies these scoring issues ;-)

The eagle card moves two different patumaires; you can't use it for moving the same patumaire two times in the same turn. For example, a good use of the card is when you have two patumaires near a square (let's say 1 and 2 spaces away) so you can try a double push.

Thread: Re: Administrator houses

Administrators mainly represent a secondary way to win some extra points and, in some cases, a quick way to move farther and get closer to some distant plazas.

As you pointed, it seems wiser to wait until the very last turns in a round to come into an administrators' house and push out an opponent patumaire from there. The problem is that, at the end of the round, you usually feel pressured to target high scoring plazas as well and, when this happens, that administrators' card value of 4 can be crucial to make your final attempt strong enough and win even more points.

Remember: squares will usually give you more victory points than administrators!

Thread: Re: Minimum push value

To be considered as a valid action, any patumaire attempting to come into a fully occupied plaza must push with at least a strength equal to 1. So, in your example, being two spaces away from the plaza, your pushing strength must be 3 or higher.

And remember you don't need any exceeding value when you come into a square with some room left.

Thread: Re: Administrator houses

Yes, it is correct. Administrators represent an easy and tempting way to get victory points but, at the same time, everybody is welcome to come into the administrator's houses and you can easily lose those points, as quickly as you won them. Too much greed for those crumbs can be a fatal error when your final aim is to win the game.

You should always bear in mind that the most important thing is to be present in the main squares when it's time to participate in the "salts" dances. In the real life festival, you have fun. In the game, you'll be awarded with many points (probably much more than the amount you got from the administrators).

marticabre wrote:
A round is ended when two players have no cards left. Has each player draws a new card after his or her actions, that means that no cards can be left either in the card pile. Is that correct?

After all players have taken 7 turns, there will be no cards left in the pile. Players keep on playing normally from that point, with no drawing (obviously!). The round is over when two players have run out of cards.

marticabre wrote:
Also, when the first player has no cards left, he can be pushed only once by the other players. That means only once per turn or only once until the end of the round?

Only once per opponent until the end of the round, e.g. in a 5-players game, the first player who runs out of cards will be in a risky position since he or she might suffer 4 attacks with no defence chances. In most cases, however, it happens that a second player runs out of cards very soon and the round is over before all those attacks can be performed.

Indeed, one of the trickiest parts of the game is to figure out whether it's clever to be very agressive initially, playing cards at a high rate, or it's wiser to be a little bit more conservative instead, keeping some valuable cards for the very last turns where they will be helpful to prevent some unpleasant surprises.

Thread: Re: Using figure cards as number cards

Yes. Like in most CDG, any of these special figure cards can be played for either its value (to be spent as operation points, let's use this wargame term) or special action.

For instance: you want to play an eagle card for its special action. For this purpose, a valid play might be using the eagle card along with a "plens" card (3) and an administrator card (4). In this case you'd perfectly meet the rules, because you would have played two cards spending their numerical values (3+4=7) as well as one (optional) card for its special action (the eagle). However, in some other cases you may wish to play the eagle card for its numerical value (5).

In short, a figure card can be played for its numerical value at any time, just like any numerical card would be.

As the administrator houses cannot be defended from a push, I guess it only makes sense getting into them using the last cards from a round, as otherwise anyone can push you out and you action would be useless.

Only the two administrator houses farthest from Plaça Sant Pere could be entered earlier, as it takes a lot of movement points to get there (or an administrator card).

Also, administrator cards should be reserved to push out other patumaires as these way you score points and remove points from another player.
