Hi,

Recently, I picked up one of the earlier available versions of Hive with the wooden pieces.

Does anyone know if the Mosquito's tiles are the same size as the wooden version of the game's tiles? Or are the current version of the game's tiles, different in size than they've previously been?

So, I went out yesterday and purchased another copy of Hive. There were several differences between this copy and my previous one.

The box differed in that the newer version has some of the awards/accolades in the top left corner (Mensa Select, etc). The older version had nothing like that.

The older version has a larger rules pamphlet, just slightly smaller than the dimensions of the box. The newer version has a smaller one, about a quarter of the size of the box dimensions, folded several times over.

The carry bag in the older version looks much nicer than the bag in the new one! I know these bags have never been popular, but the bag in the newer version is semi-transparent, with a yellow tint. It's also made of a stiffer material, resisting my efforts to smooth it out and make it sit nice and flat in the box insert. The old one is a clean white and is nicer to handle (softer), lying flat as a pancake in the box.

And the tiles? The new version's tile colours match the mosquito pieces 100%! I turned the white tiles over and shuffled them around, then tried to pick out the mosquito. I couldn't identify it at all. The same applies for the black tiles, of course. It really is a perfect match.

I grabbed the old bag and rules to add to the new tiles and box, giving me the best of both sets. I am no bakelite expert, but I'm really not sure that it's an age issue. It seems to me that the bakelite in my old set really is a different colour (and I still feel that the edges are just ever so slightly different). It's not as though my set has seen a lot of play and/or handling. It spent a lot of time in the cupboard and has only seen 15 or 16 plays - ever.

Hive is one of the cheapest games available here. Purchasing a second set was no big deal. Now, I can take the old set, sans mosquito, to introduce to a friend or colleague. If they end up loving it, I can leave it with them. Or, I could leave it at work, in the hope that, one day, I might play games on my lunch break like some of the guys here. In any event, having a spare set that I can take anywhere is handy. And, my obsessive nature is appeased with a perfectly matching set at home.

I wondered if perhaps "recent" sets match better. Mine was purchased more than a year ago, maybe two, in Australia. I am now itching to purchase a second copy to see if they match better. That would be extravagant and really wasteful, wouldn't it? Then again, how can having a spare Hive set ever be bad?

Absolutely no difference with mine, both purchased within the last year. All have been co-habitating within the nylon zippered Hive bag for a couple of months. I think the white ones tend to pick up a light patina of dirt & scratches over time.

I wish they had used a different color for the mosquito paint - it doesn't show that well on the black bakelite.

Got mine. There was a definite difference. It annoyed me. But then I thought--It's Bakalite, maybe it will age. I'll wait. Glad to hear that it sounds like they do age.

Mine is also new and is clearly different, as you describe. However, when I photograph it, the difference is very hard to see! I showed several photographs to my wife and asked her if she could see a difference (man, am I anal).

Instantly, she said "Yes, of course!", but then followed that up with "One has a blue ant on it and the other has a grey something...what is that?" Sheesh, some people, eh? When I explained that it was the background I was talking about, she said that she couldn't see a difference. Neither could I. Perhaps one needs a better camera than I have to bring it out.

I too am hoping that time will see them look more similar.

Hooray! It wasn't just me! The differences in the white pieces are quite stark with my set. However, I do wonder if the bakelite "ages" somewhat? Is this possible that in a few months time the Mosquito will more closely match the others?

I'm not sure it requires a fix! The game is great! The pieces are incredibly solid. It's really just my particular nature that had me posting about it. I would love to see a perfect match but, at the same time, I don't think it's necessary to go to any trouble over it.

I photographed mine to show the difference but, in the photographs, it is very difficult to see the difference. That convinced me that I should stop obsessing. Russ, thanks for mentioning that it bothered you, if only a little, at first. I was kind of expecting to be the only one.

My white mosquito tile is slightly pinker than the base set's white tiles. At first I was surprised and slightly disappointed that they don't match better, but then I got over it and don't even notice it any more unless I'm intentionally looking for it. No one else who's used my set has commented on it.

I noticed a slight mismatch in the color of my mosquito tiles. I did not (do not) notice a mismatch in the sharpness of the tile edges.

Lately, it seems the mosquito tiles match my original set much more closely. It is as if the mosquito tiles "aged" a bit after I rcvd them. The lighting has to be just right before I notice the difference. I've had the original set about a year, and the mosquito tiles about three months or so (I rcvd them just before they became available in the US).

Edit: For the record, the original mismatch in color bothered me a bit, and the guy I most often play with noticed the color mismatch right away. But it really is like the tiles "aged" and now we don't notice it anymore.

I did notice the differing colors (though it does not bother me a bit), and I'd assumed it was because that my old tiles had been handled to death. This is because the old ones are off-white, while my mosquito is pure white. I bet my tiles match in another year or so.

I did not notice the shape, but I'll check.

Let me state right up front that I am being incredibly picky. Hive is an incredible game, in my opinion, and is as close to flawless as anything in my collection (and significantly closer than most).

Still, I could not help but be a little disappointed that the mosquito tiles are a slightly different shade than the tiles in my copy of the base game. The difference is not that easy to see for the black tile, as you would expect, but it is quite obvious for the white tile. Moreover, the tiles in the base game appear to have more rounded edges.

Has anyone found that the mosquito tiles match their base game tiles perfectly? I would consider purchasing a new copy of the game if it meant that the tiles would match perfectly. Yes, I know. I can't help it.

Just because a mosquito moving on the hive as a beetle doesn't change the fact that it's a mosquito.

In your picture, the black mosquito cannot climb onto the white mosquito, because mosquitos cannot inherit abilities from another mosquito. If, however, there was another (uncovered) beetle adjacent to the black mosquito, the black mosquito could climb onto the white mosquito and retain its "beetleness" until it climbed back down off of the hive. It would not be "stuck".

I recently played a game ( on boardspace.net) where my mosquito was touching a mosquito that was on top of another piece (acting as a beetle).

Is my mosquito (black) allow to climb on to the white mosquito?

Yes, i know that a mosquito on mosquito is 'stuck' but is it still considered just a mosquito even though it's definately acting as a beetle?

Thoughts?

The Mosquito arrived at my FLGS in South Africa today, from Alliance Games. Naturally, I had to pick it up.

I recall reading a stormy thread regarding this expansion and it's perceived exclusivity. I applaud the effort to make this available to everyone. Even the packaging is quality, allowing you to remove the pieces and instructions without destroying it and thus use it to store the expansion in, should you not want to add it to the box.

Outstanding!

Thought Hammer has had it for pre-order for a few days now. However it is 7.49 with a flat rate for shipping (inless you are going to get other stuff) of 8.00.
