Thread: This isn't the Rebound I Remember

Having picked up a copy of Rebound at a garage sale recently, I decided to bring it along for filler on a gaming day with a retired co-worker.

Well this version is not the one I remember. It comes in two pieces rather than being a solid board like I had in my youth. It has a tilt area on the scoring side at the connection point, a open gateway between the two sides a bumper just before the pit and seems to slant towards the inside wall of the scoring area. I do not consider any of these an improvement to the game.

It took several games for us to develop the right approach. Bob (the retiree) won two of the first three games and became quite adept at knocking my scoring pucks into the pit while leaving his in the scoring area. He also used the bump a couple of times to get a maximum puck score.

Once I eased off a bit and stopped sending my pucks down too "hot" the final two games were more competitive and I won them both.

It served well to fill in the time waiting for a couple of dinner guests to arrive. I also have the original rebound and will give that a try next time!

Crosley makes a wooden one piece version for around 90 dollars(us). It looks extremely well made and durable. For that price it should last a lifetime.

IMHO its well worth tracking down an original copy. The newer, two piece version is completely inferior. It doesn't fit together very well, and the thinner plastic is prone to warping.

Thread: Session Report

Mike M. unexpectedly arrived at my house around 8pm and we decided to play a few games before heading out to a local nightclub.

I challenged Mike to a rematch of Rebound as he thoroughly beat me last Thursday. I even took some steel wool to the metal balls to ensure they were at optimum performance.

I took a large lead and was around 400 pts to Mike's 200. Then he got into the grove and started his comeback. He gained 120 pts in one round due to a very skillfull (i.e. lucky - haha!) shot.

The game was very close and he won with 510 pts to my 470 pts.

Thread: Session Report

This past summer felt like a write-off to me. I went through a separation (to my wife of ten years). My grandfather passed away. I sold my house, trimmed my game collection, and throughout the process started thinking about the good old days. During this time I fondly remembered games I used to play as a child. Rebound was one such game. Whenever my sister and/or cousins went to our grandparents house we would play this game in their basement. What wonderful memories! I therefore decided to keep my eyes peeled for these older games. A while back I stumbled on a copy of Ker-Plunk, and...

Yesterday (deja vu), I saw two copies of Rebound in a local thrift store. I purchased both, knowing these copies are often missing pieces. Sure enough, one of the marble/carom pieces was missing from the set I brought to the gaming club. Mike M. challenged me to a game and he won quite easily. I guess he wanted to make up for his bashing in table top hockey...

Unfortunately, our table was not level which caused quite a few quirky plays. At any rate, the game just wasn't exciting as I remembered it to be. Maybe this is because our meeting place (the German Harmonie Society) has a shuffleboard table?

Still, the game has that curling-esque (not a word, I know) feel that some of us enjoy. If I play this game ten times over the next five years I will more than satisfied with the purchase. And best of all, I get to relive a bit of my childhood!!

Thread: User Review

If you enjoyed the curling event at the Olympics this year, you'll enjoy this game. Your goal is to slide your pucks down the alley, off of the rubber bands and into the scoring zones. The closer you get to the pit, the more you score, and if you slide too hard, the puck will zip into the pit, and you get nothing. After all eight pucks are played, each player adds his points on the scorekeeping slides on the gameboard, and you repeat until someone gets 500 points.

Strategy is straightforward, but not nearly as easy to implement. Often, your choice is to either get one of your pucks into the points, or zip yours down and hope to knock enemy pucks out of contention. At several points, you'll likely increase your opponents score by not hitting hard enough.

The game is a simple yellow plastic molded board with blue lettering. The pucks are ball bearings with red and blue plastic rings, and work well. A later version of the game offers a green board, with an ultimate scoring area, black post thatcuts off a section of the pit, and sliding areas to catch pucks that aren't flung hard enough.

Rebound is a game that works well for kids and adults alike, because finesse is more of a factor than strength. If you can find it at a thrift store, grab it, it is well worth the money.
