Thread: Uncle Wiggily endgame problem

Has anyone else noticed an endgame issue with Uncle Wiggily? I think the game may be broken. Often when we play the field breaks out with some clear leaders and stragglers, but the game always seems to end with all the pieces clustered within 10 spaces of the end manoeuvring for position. I suppose this could be a deliberate game mechanic to bring about play balance and ensure that everyone is in contention to the very end (like Reiner Knizia or Stefan Dorra would do), but it feels a little frustrating to be waiting for that one perfect number to come up.

Anyone have any alternate rules to help bring about a better endgame?

Thread: Uncle Wiggily comic strip.

I do a vintage comic site, and we've got a handful of Uncle Wiggily comics up, from 1925.

http://www.barnaclepress.com/comics/archives/comedy/uncle_wi...

My first exposure to the character was through the board game, and it's neat to see the source material for the theme!

Thread: User Review

Game Review: Uncle Wiggily

The Quick and Dirty:
Classic roll-and-move children's game. Without the "roll."

Rules/Mechanics:
Players are each issued an "Uncle Wiggily" pawn (a plastic rabbit) and take turns drawing "rabbit" card which contain brief homilies and movement instructions. Cards are imprinted with large numbers for the benefit of pre-literate players. If a player draws a card with a paw-print on it, they must instead draw a red card from a separate stack, and follow the accompanying directions, such as suffering a movement penalty. The first player whose pawn lands on the 100th space by exact count is the winner.

Strategy:
This game has no decision making, per-se. There is a fractional advantage to moving first, but this will ikely be erased by the drawing of penalty cards.

Components:
Uncle Wiggily has been in production since 1919, and there are therefore several variant editions, in many conditions. The version currently commonly available includes a sturdy stiffened-cardboard playing surface, brightly-printed track and cards, and bright plastic pieces.

Remarks:
According to "Live and Learn" toys, Uncle Wiggily was created in 1910 by children's author Howard Garis to illustrate a series of stories he wrote for the Newark News. Ironically, while the Uncle Wiggily Longears stories have since passed out of the public eye, the Uncle Wiggily game lives on. The game is slightly more educational than Chutes and Ladders, which it closely resembles, inasmuch as it encourages reading and numeracy, and replaces the tedious die-rolling of C&L with the slightly more interactive card-pull movement mechanic. Still, this is not a very pleasant game to play for anyone with a burgeoning sense of their own agency and importance, and there are plenty of children's games which are far superior, even for pre-literate children.

Caveat: while all efforts have been made to correctly represent factual information, all comments are solely representative of the article author, and not necessarily the opinions of Board Game Geek, its hosts, editors, or moderators.
