Then we moved and I got rid of the game. I picked it up for about $20 at Half Price Books and had fun the first couple times playing it. My bro and I had no idea how to play, the instructions bored us. We would just sit there and take turns punching in codes. Eventually we figurd it out and kind of played by the rules.

To be honest, I dont miss this game one bit.

The game does run on a timer too, so if her attention span is short then it might not be for you. Still, on the easiest setting it's not too bad.

Mine had a tough time grasping the elimination part of the game....but they got it after a couple of plays and the dissapointmanet of being eliminated!

Thread: a typical session of evil

I’ve read some reviews and session reports of The Omega Virus and can’t help but wonder if either: a) Everybody else is playing it wrong, or b) My family is evil.

I suspect the second option is correct. So let me tell you how we play The Omega Virus:

(This session report is a fictionalized conglomerate of about 4 actual games, all of which followed roughly the same pattern.)

Part 1: The sales pitch

B: “Hey, let’s play The Omega Virus”
T: “Yeah!”
E: “Yeah!”
A: “No way! Not unless we all promise to work together.”
B+T+E: “We promise!”
A: “I don’t believe you.”
B: “Look, I’m sorry about last time. But I promise not to attack you.”
T: “Yeah, I don’t like attacking people anyway, you know that.”
A: “Well… okay…”

Part 2: The pre-game

T: “Okay, you go check those rooms. I’ll use my probe over here.”
E: “Nah, I want to search over here instead.”
T: “Why? You’ll have to double back later.”
E: “I have a hunch.”
A: “Guys? Could you talk quieter? I’m trying to---”
Virus: “HELP ME… HELP ME… HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!”
A: “---think.”
B: “Hurry up.”
A: “I need to think!”
B: “Geez, sorry.”

Part 3: It begins

B: “Gosh, maybe I should move here. Or maybe here. Or maybe, well I don’t know, maybe I should…”
Virus: “5 MINUTES UNTIL I TAKE OVER!!!”
A: “You’re deliberately stalling!”
B: “Please, A, I’m trying to think. Now, where was I. Oh yeah, should I move here? Or maybe, wait, no…”
T: “Just move and stop being a jerk.”
B: “Fine, fine, I’ll go here.” *takes his turn*
E: *moves his commando closer to T*
T: “Why did you do that? We need to split up!”
E: “Oh, sorry, I wasn’t thinking.”
T: “You’re planning to attack me again!”
E: “No, no, there’s not enough time left for that. We have to work together.”
A: “GUYS! I’M TRYING TO THINK!”

Part 4: The payoff

Virus: “BLUE IS ATTACKING RED PROBE! WHAT FUN!”
T: “YOU LYING ASSHOLE!”
E: *laughs*
A: “We’re supposed to be working together!”
B: “Yeah guys, we’re supposed to be working together!”
A: “Shut up! Stop mocking me!”
B: “What?! I was taking your side!”
T: *bitterly picks his shields*
Console: *BOOM!*
Computer: “Red probe - destroyed”
T: *starts punching E*
E: *laughs maniacally*
Virus: “TWO MINUTES UNTIL I TAKE OVER!”
B: “Guys, guys, please. Could you please stop fighting? Now, should I move here? Or maybe here? Or maybe…”
A: “Stop it! You’re going to make us lose!”
B: *copying the exact tone of A* “GUYS! I’M TRYING TO THINK!”
A: *throws something at B*
B: *laughs maniacally*
T: “You’re dead, E.”
E: *still giggling* “Bring it.”

Part 5: The inevitable conclusion

Virus: “YOU LOSE!”
A: “I’M NEVER PLAYING AGAIN!”
T: “I’M NEVER PLAYING WITH E AGAIN!”
E+B: “Aww, c’mon, want to play again?”
Thread: Re: Twenty minutes until I take over!

Great review, but 2 stars? Ouch!

I almost always play this game with teenagers and younger kids, so that affects my perception, but I never find Omega Virus cumbersome or tedious. In fact, the tension is through the roof. Five minutes until I take over... two minutes until I take over... one minute until I take over... Help me, help me! I am getting stressed just thinking about it.

The atmosphere is great. There is no mistake that the players are spacemen aboard a space station that is being taken over by an evil virus. I especially like it when the virus mocks the computer, or when the virus finds it amusing when spacemen attack each other. Great stuff.

The replay value is certainly there for me and it is one of my most played games through the years. It may be my wife’s favorite game (probably because of the hard 30 minute time limit). My center console is still going strong.

The actual play is decent (2.5) and overall, how much do I really look forward to this game? About 2. But the pieces are definitely a strong suit, something I love, I thought a 4. It's not a hugely mathematical system, it's just a personal comparison for each topic. YMMV.

Wait a minute...I don't understand your star logic here -

You give the bits a 4 star rating, the game play 2 and a half stars, but somehow that translates to a 2 star overall rating?

What?!?!?!?!?

How could your two grading criteria have middle to high individual ratings, but the overall rating is low? I don't get it.

Oh well.

Excellent review. I felt the same way about the game. Once the novelty wears off, it's just not that good a game. I didn't shed any tears or rend any of my garments when I discovered that the main unit stopped working. It was given an unceremonious burial into File 13.

Good Riddance!

Thread: Twenty minutes until I take over!

I started playing Omega Virus when I was in middle school... I think. At any rate, to this day, I can always get a cheap laugh by announcing, at any time: Twenty minutes until I take over!

Out of the Box
You can't refute that, as a kid, seeing the pieces for The Omega Virus made you a weeeeeee bit giddy. The pieces that represent the players are excellent plastic models, almost rubbery, equipped with a backpack that can have further pieces attached. The sectors are high quality, glossy board that fold out. To each of these is attached a plastic 'hinge' to attach a further guide and a little drop box for the security passes (again: high quality, glossy board). The game is also equipped with equipment for those fancy backpacks, made from plastic and none of this comes on sprues.

The center console is a great center piece with the electronics, plastic probe droids, security passes, and weapons. The buttons setup the game and are important as you explore the board. Players use the keys also to attack both the virus and each other! When you attack the virus, one of the buttons will destroy it. When attacking another player, they will secretly press up to three of the buttons as 'shields'. You will 'damage' them in some way if you choose a button that they did not activate as a shield. It makes for a good, electronic battle on a real quick 'guess my number' scale.

You can't help but feel like a big kid when you see the pieces of this game and love every second of it.

Game Play
While I loved this game for a fun twenty minutes, it can get tedious. As you move about the board you 'explore' rooms and the computer tells you the contents. You need to keep written, accurate records of your explorations to be able to keep up with the other explorers and the clock. Yes, don't forget, the Virus can win, and sometimes will! The game's time limit is based on the number of players and the chosen difficulty. Choose wisely if you'd like to be able to complete the game with a human victor.

The game's interface is fantastic but the explorations can be cumbersome waiting, searching, and rarely finding the required pieces to attack the virus. Worse yet are those turns spent looking for the virus while you are equipped. I do, however, enjoy the brief suspense provided when you are equipped and fearing losing a single piece but that is coupled with the frustration of not knowing where your destination even may be. The multiplayer solitaire feel is always there but can quickly slip away when another player chooses to hunt you.

Overall
Overall this game provides a great break in the norm of strategy games without resorting to too much luck. The theme is unique, the taunting board is fun, and the pieces are amusing. Get a copy, play it from time to time, and enjoy it with the right mood. Then let it collect dust because some of the most fun times are when our group makes a joke about playing Omega Virus... and then someone digs it out of a closet.

Thread: In Which Humanity Is Exterminated But We Dance Well Together

My son is entirely too cheerful for a boy who's grounded. Due to unacceptable levels of whininess, disobedience and general naughtiness, he is spending a week in the dog house (figuratively, of course--we don't have a dog, and I don't have time to build a tiny house).

This grounding does not apply to boardgames, and we have time to squeeze in a game of The Omega Virus before bedtime. My wife won't play this game, and he doesn't like to play it competitively, so we play cooperatively against the virus.

We begin by choosing our regular colors: green for me, red for him. I set it for difficulty level 1 to shorten the game a little and provide a tougher challenge.

Even though we've already agreed to use 0,0 as our secret code, he shields his selection from me as he punches it in. I ask why, and his only response is a giggle.

So we begin as usual, alternating our moves as the computer pleads "Help me" and the virus taunts "You human scum!" Honestly, we don't need the computer voice, because my son is shouting "You human scum!" every three seconds.

We begin exploring the station, making unusually slow progress. We can't find the access cards we need, our probes get destroyed and time slips away.

I get distracted by something on the television, and when I look back I notice that my son is taking a long time on his turn. His commando is in the hallway doing what I can only describe as a combination of The Jitterbug and a Russian folk dance.

"Um...what are you doing?" I ask.

He uses his oh my you're such an idiot expression. "Dancing."

He uses that expression a lot. I'm not really sure why.

"Um...yeah," I continue, "but...why?"

He shrugs and finishes up with an inspired homage to Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo.

We blunder along, hoping for our luck to turn. The Twist, The Hustle, The Mashed Potato and something I dub The Squiggy Wiggy somehow fail to deter the evil ambitions of the loquacious computer virus.

As the timer winds down and we are unable to find the last items we need, the virus mocks us mercilessly.

Unlike the intrepid heroes of Electric Boogaloo, we are unable to use our mad skills to save the day. After a bevy of dance steps and one tweaked hamstring, we are humbled and defeated by Mr. Chatty Pants and his arsenal of cruel taunts.

The space station is lost. Earth's cities are burning cinders.

My son shrugs and dances off toward the bathroom to brush his teeth. It looks like he's working on a new routine already.

Next time, virus, next time. We're gonna dance circles around you. We'll call it Electric Boogaloo: Payback.

Thread: Four, against each other, and a very annoying virus

Carson, Stockton, Payson, and I sat down to defeat the virus. It was clear that we weren't working together, and previous experience 24 hours previously showed we had an uphill battle.

Perhaps it wasn't wise, but we chose the difficult challenge. Fifteen minutes to destroy the virus. Difficult with seasoned veterans. Even harder when one of your four crackshots is four years old. Across from him was his timid, eight-year old brother. Between them was their trigger happy eleven-year old brother, who was more likely to hit you over the head, steal a needed anti-virus implement, and teleport you across the map than he would be to search for anti-virus help on his own.

Great.

Fifteen minutes, four explorers, a distressed computer, and an annoying virus.

Five minutes in we weren't doing well. Those who found probes had lost them quickly. Carson had already attacked his brother, and the virus was getting on our nerves.

Ten minutes in, with only five minutes left, we were little better off and it looked like we would run out of time. No help, no brotherly love, just antagonism, anger and pain.

Three minutes later, the virus was even more cocky, if possible. Twice more around, but to no avail. Time up. Red destroyed. Blue destroyed. Green destroyed. Yellow destroyed.

Move three spaces per turn. The robot thing can move any number of spaces. Every room you discover gives you a code. If the code to the room that you're given (not somebody else is given) matches the code you entered in the beginning, that's where the Omega Virus is. You need all three things to fight him.

The rest (entering codes and time limits and things) are all explained on the cheat sheet or spoken to you.

Hope this helps

Thread: User Review

Quick Rundown
Omega Virus puts you on the military satellite BattleSat 1. Unfortunatly for you, BattleSat 1 is slowly being taken over by the Omega Virus. Your job? Move around the station from room to room collecting access cards that give you access to more room, and new components to add to your backpack and suit that allow you to kill the virus. Find all 3 components, find the room with the virus, kill him, and you win.

How It Works
The most interesting part of this game is the interaction with the computer in the center of the gameboard. Every move, all items found, the time left of the game, and everything else is all tracked by the computer. Each player has control of his commando and moves around the board to the objects he needs. Each turn your commando can move up to three spaces, landing on an empty space, a room, or a docking bay. During your turn, you have few option: if you land on a docking bay, hit the pass button on the computer and move your commando to a different area of the board to explore new rooms, if you land on a space between room, hit the pass button and wait for your next turn. If, however, you land on a room, you hit the explore button on the computer, type in the room number, and see what happens. You can also attack players and the virus during your turn.

There are four different colored rooms (green, red, blue, yellow) and access cards for each. Every players starts with a green card, and therefore, at the start, you can only go into green rooms. As you explore rooms, the computer will tell you what happens. Sometimes you find a new access card, granting you access to a new room, sometimes you find one of the three items you need before you can attack the virus, sometimes you find your probe (a second playing piece allowing you to basically have two turns in a row), sometimes you find nothing. Other times the virus attacks you, destroying access cards and weapons or teleporting you to other sections of the spacestation.

Exploring rooms earns you the items you need. Once you collect all three weapons you can find the room where the virus is, type in the room code, and he'll prompt you to attack him. Hit the right button, and down he goes. You've won, and the BattleSat 1 is safe for another day.

Is It Fun?
It's enjoyable, but you wouldn't want to play it twice in a row. Or even twice in a week. The computer talks the entire game, and doesn't have what i would call a...melodic voice. The real draw of the game is the fact that it's timed. Depending on the difficulty setting, games can take from 15-30 minutes. The less time you have, the harder it gets. Players are working together to kill the virus, if he doesn't die, everyone dies, but they're also fighting agaisnt each other to be the one to kill him and be proclaimed the winner. So the last minute decision making can get pretty amusing. You and another person are both in the room with the virus. 1 minute left. You both have all the weapons needed, and you both know he's in there. 45 seconds left. It's your turn. If you wanted to, you could take a stab and killing the virus and winning, but there's four buttons on the computer, and only one of them is right. If this is your first attack, you have a 25% chance of nailing him. 30 seconds left. Or...you could attack your friend, destroying one of his weapons and making it impossible for him to attack the virus on his own turn, but then you have to wait until your next turn to get a stab at winning. 20 seconds left. And of course, you might always miss your friend, and then you've wasted your turn.

It can get pretty tight and dirty at the end of the game. And yes, tight and dirty is fun.

Components
The commandos and probes are simple, but solid. The computer is sturdy, easy to operate and has one really big plus: during the game (and in storage) it holds all the weapons, all the access cards, and all the probes, seperating them out and organizing them for easy storage, and making them easy to find during a fast moving timed game. The one problem with the computer is that he talks constatly: the virus taunts players, the BattleSat 1 pleads for help, but it's more annoying than anything. While the computer's talking you can't hit a button and keep playing. If it's your turn, and you want to explore a room, you have to wait for the idiot to shut up before you can hit the explore button.

The access cards, boards, and personal player boards and made of a thick cardboard. I've had mine for years, played it since i was a kid, and they're worn, but easily playable and everything's very readable. The personal player boards attach to the main board and are very nice. They hold off your access cards for one, but the best things is that all of the rules are printed in a very organized fasion on each board. Everything about movement, exploring, attack, winning, defding, everything is on the board and easy to find in case you can't remember to type in 1-0-0 to attack the red commando. The boards are also used to shut down sectors of the game board as the virus takes over by flipping them up and over, and attaching them to the computer in the center. The game also comes with sheets to write down what you found in what room.

Rules
The rules are very simply, and as stated above, and all listed for each player on his/her personal game board. No problem there.

Overall
No, it's not the best game in the world, but it's fun for a quick laugh and big change of pace. Don't read this and immediatly start to google Omega Virus searching for your own copy, but if you own your own copy already, smile with me.

Thread: Quick Comments

Positives: Due to the computer chip, you can play with only one person. Computer chip allows players to alter the level and the time allowed to play. This type of control allows you to set how long you want to, or are able to, play. So, if you have only 20 minutes to spare, you can still fit a game in. Computer continually spits out humorous taunts against the players, mocks them and their abilities, and decides on seemingly random players to decry and insist on the need for their imminent extinction. Game also allows players to help or hinder other players, depending on the moods of those participating at the time.

Negatives: Clumsy board and multitude of pieces seem to be Machiavellian in contrivance. The game relies on speed and concentration, and spending time attempting to clip your accessories onto your figure while writing down codes and moving two pieces around the board strikes me as a little evil. Of course, that may be your style. As with many electronic games, breakdown of the computer electronics renders the game nonviable.

Verdict: A fun, fast-moving game. Good for concentration, organizational skills, and quick thinking. The detractions to this fun simply do not seem to matter while playing, as the game does very well in setting an urgent mood.
