Bounty Hunter: Shootout at the Saloon
Nova Game Designs, Inc. (1982, $16.95)
Designed by Mike Vitale and Joe Angiolillo

Players: 2
Playing Time: 10-30 minutes
Period: Old West
Scale: tactical combat between two opponents

Box: 10x17" slipcase

Components: Lawman game book, Outlaw game book, 7 double-sided
sheets of game charts and diagrams.

Nova says: "Bounty Hunter is an exciting, fast-paced, realistic
re-creation of gunfights and robberies in the Wild West. Using
the revolutionary stop-action picture book system of the award
winning Ace of Aces, Bounty Hunter contains two books, each with
290 views in and around the saloon of an old-time Wild West town.
With up to 18 possible moves each turn, you may move your
character to intercept your opponents and build skill and
reputation for use in future games of Bounty Hunter."

The reviewer says: "The views are well-drawn and the pages are
bigger than Ace of Aces. The rules for campaigning are more
complete. The Advanced Game silhouette system [for damage
resolution] has been well thought through and improves the
concept in realism . . . Unfortunately, page-size, campaigning,
and combat resolution had nothing to do with why flipbooks became
so popular with the Ace of Aces system . . . [Bounty Hunter] is a
dull idea well executed." David McCorkhill in The Space Gamer
issue 58.

Comments: Bounty Hunter was a valiant attempt to expand (or
capitalize on?) the ingenious Ace of Aces system. This game of
"hide and seek at the saloon" does not succeed in generating the
same level of excitement as the World War I dogfights of its
predecessor. In addition, the tiny playing area severely
diminishes the replay value as compared to Ace of Aces (the 290
views in Bounty Hunter only encompass about 15 different places
where your character might be standing.) A nice try, but it was
no surprise when the Bounty Hunter expansions failed to
materialize.

Collector's Notes: Current prices on Bounty Hunter do not seem to
have reached a level reflecting the extravagant 1982 price tag.
Boone's Internet Wargames Catalog (3rd) does not list this game, but
I would suggest that your target price for an excellent copy shouldn't
exceed the original retail price by much. Copies are out there, but it
can take some looking. With a little persistence, anyone should be able
to track down Bounty Hunter without hiring one!

Also designed by Mike Vitale: Timelag (Nova).

(This article was originally published in issue 5 of Simulacrum, October 1999.)

Thread: General Comment

Does anyone know what happened to Alfred Leonardi and the other designers of this game? The other books that were mentioned, for this series, must've at least in print as conceptual because several pages point toward the other books. I wonder what the chances of them being printed are if the designers tried to get them published?
