Thread: Counter Limits

In the absence of anything in contrary in the rules, I assume that the following are correct.

The counters provided with the game are an absolute limit e.g. Legion counters are limited to the number provided.

A player my continue to take rewards even after the victory condition for that reward has been met e.g. a player may continue to take Legions even if he has met the Legion victory condition.

3 rounds is not long enough with the amount of randomness in this game to keep it from being fluff.

I've played two, five player games. Both were 3 rounds.

Thread: Re: Mini Preview Tribune Expansion

I found that the Slaves worked really well.

The new Victory Conditions and the Jobs seemed to be way too different in power to be worth using for strategy gamers. But let's see how it looks when it is ready for production.

The 6th player mechanism was interesting, but not my cup of tea. I prefer games where you don't have to change to change the rules to accomodate additional players.

Thread: Mini Preview Tribune Expansion

I got a chance to play the prototype for the expansion last weekend. And I thought that some of you might interessted in it ;)

First, this was only a prototype so anything might change till the release (Currently they hope to release it at the end of the year).

-new Victory Conditions
The prototype had multiple new victory conditions. For the first one (sorry I don't memorized the exact name) you had to place one of your meeples on a new space. Furthermore, every round there was a new condition card revealed which had to be fullfilled. They usually demanded the mayority in one aspect like sesterces, faction markers and a static condition. If you fullfilled it at the end of the round and had your meeple there, you could take the card which counted as a victory condition.

The next one demanded that you sell 3 slaves ;) Slaves are a new type of card which are not a faction but can be used for very useful effects. Or you could use the slave market to sell 3 as a victory conditon.

new Buildings (I dont know which word is used in the englisch version, I simply mean the spots for placing your meeples ;))

I already explained two of the new buildings, there are two additional ones, the first is used in order to get the special effect of a slave card. The other let you take a special card which represents a worker, a merchant for example. Those workers, there were five of them, gave you a special bonus for each following round until someone else takes the worker or you take another worker. One of the bonus was to draw two cards at the beginning of the round, anothee gave you a fixed amount of sesterce and allowed you to take one sesterce from each player. Another one made it easier to become tribune, you just have to controll two factions and you must to forgo their normal bonus.

-number of players
It is now possible two play tribune with up to six players, BUT the expansion does not contain new meeples. The sixth player has the same goals as any other player but he normally never place a meeple, he plays entirely different. I won't share any details here since I don't won't to spoil all the fun ;) By the way, the special player ist still under heavy playtesting. It will also be possible to use the special player in a game with less than six people.

So that's it. I must say that I really liked tribune before, but with the expansion it becomes even better. Especially the special player is a neat addition. The other additions are also nice. I like it that it is now easier to become Tribune, I found it a little too hard in the base game.

In Tribune you're placing followers (workers) to recieve cards with number values vs. resources or cubes. This give Tribune a very different feel than other other worker placement games. Tribune is quicker and has the feel of quick race to complete objectives vs. the slower games like Caylus and Pillars.
Thread: Re: Plebejer and Vestal Control -- Discrepancy in BGG Posts

We played it for the first time last night and getting a tribune didn't seem difficult at all, so maybe we did something wrong.

Why is it necessary to retain control of a faction? Isn't it possible to get the scroll on one turn, and then just take control of one the faction pairs that allow converting it to a tribune?

For the most balanced game, I would suggest 4 players and 4 objectives 5 followers each and no obligatory objective. I would also use #4.

#4. To minimize luck in Tribune rather than starting with 6 cards and keeping 4. I suggest starting with 4 cards and passing 3 to the player on your left. Then pass 2 and then pass 1. This will help prevent one player from getting multiple leaders by luck.

This game should take 4 - 5 turns. Each player will get a chance to go first. If the game goes 5 turns the first player will have a slight advantage.

Thread: 10 quick strategy ideas for Tribune

#1. Early in the game always go after leaders. Leaders provide ¼ - 1/3 of what you need for a victory condition or each leader is worth 1 victory point. Even if you can’t use the leader during the game you’ll prevent the other players from taking the leader.

#2. On the first turn try to take 2 factions. Take a faction in 1st turn gives you an extra Laurel and the easiest time to take a faction is on the first turn.

#3. Take factions with the 2 cards when ever possible. You’re likely to get assassinated if you take over a faction with 3 or more cards.

#4. To minimize luck in Tribune rather than starting with 6 cards and keeping 4. I suggest starting with 4 cards and passing 3 to the player on your left. Then pass 2 and then pass 1. This will help prevent one player from getting multiple leaders.

#5. Remember the opportunity cost of each action. Followers can always be placed on the coin bowl for 5 denari.

#6. The Latrine is gamble but if you have a card worth 6+ it worth more than going to the coin bowl. If you can get a leader, you’ve hit the jack pot. You lose if the card is worth 3 – 4 points.

#7. The Atrium Auctionorum is one of the best regions to place your followers. This is an opportunity to get 3 cards and only place 1 worker. I think the minimum bid should be 5 for the Atrium unless it’s late in the game and the cards are useless. I’ve paid as much as 9 denari for the 3 cards.

#8. If your going to control the Gladiators, you could use the catacombs and basically get your money back for controlling the Gladiators.

#9. If you have the Temporary Favor of the God go to the Pantheon with your first follower so you can see what card you need to get the Permanent Favor of the Gods.

#10. The chariot is worth at least 5 denari for the person controlling the Patricians. For the players trying to become a Tribune it maybe worth more. It’s probably not worth 5 to protect the Gladiators, Legates and Praetorians.
