Sorry for the late reply, but I have been out of internet range, for the last four days!!

Yes, you are stuck purchasing only one special ability when you create a character. You do get it at half price though!!
OK . . . I know! Not good enough.
However, the special abilities are pretty good! We found they skewed the game a little too much, so we had to reduce them somehow. One per level is still enough to make a difference!
Thread: Character creation - More than 1 special ability?

I was creating some characters last night and had given them at least 2 special abilities each, when I noticed that the rules state "A Hero can also purchase a special ability, as a starting Character." Does this mean that you can only purchase one special ability when creating the character? For example, if you want a magic character, are you stuck just purchasing "Magic School" and nothing else?
Thread: 30 second review after one play (References to Warhammer quest)

Apologies for this being quite short, I normally wouldn’t bother but as there are so few reviews for a free game, it seems I should return the generous favour of the creator of the game.

Summary of the game:
Simple, fast dungeon crawl, with some excellent game mechanics.

Simple to learn rules, which would be easily tweak-able, so it is a very good base system.

We have played war hammer quest in the past, and actually used the boards and miniatures from that, which although slightly smaller and claustrophobic it played fine. No diagonal movement or attacks are allowed in DP hence needing more room to move.

How much fun did we have?

It was fun, simple to learn, it would be an excellent game in a no brainer kind of way, but after having played many games workshop games it seems a bit bland.
The game took us about 90 minutes.

Would we play it again?

Probably not, for light games I guess we would rather play a board / card game like red dragon inn and for heavier games I think GW has spoiled us. We do like our rules and fluff.
Please don’t take this as a bad review, its is an excellent game, very well written, some beautiful mechanics, very simple and elegant to play, huge scalability and potential to be excellent. Best of it is Free.

It just isn’t the game for us, we like things a bit more deep and we also like tweaking the rules, we may well borrow some of the mechanics and tweak the rules a bit and play bits of it but I doubt we will play it as is.

Summary:
Print off the rules and give it a go with one of the simpler dungeons (saving having to print off too much) The mission with the troll is a good mission to start with.

Please note the things that didn't do it for us may well may make the game for you, if you want a fun game you can play and dip in and out of, but with decent character creation and development without being bogged down in rules and fluff this is the game for you.

On a wierd note our first game gave us 50xp exactly the experience needed to level up to level 2.

Thread: Re: random encounters

You have the Random Events correct.

The other misunderstanding comes from having a Random Event called "Wandering Monster" in the Quest rules and a game rule called "Wandering Monster" in the main rules (Something I will need to change in the next edition, I think!)

The Wandering Monster rule refers to already cleared rooms.
When you re-enter a room that has already been visited and cleared then there is a chance of encountering a monster. (Roll a D6 and on a result of 1 a monster appears.) More detail is available under Wandering Monsters on page 22 of the Rulebook.

I hope this helps clarify the issue.

~Shaun
Thread: Re: random encounters

So to be clear.

any time you make a roll and they are all 1s and 2s, a random encounter occurs?

and anytime you enter a room that has been cleared previously, what happens, automatically have a random even occur or you make some sort of roll?

Other then this ambiguity (quite likely with my understanding and not the rules) it has been pretty smooth sailing and quite a bit of fun.
Thank you Shaun for a great game and your fast replies.
Thread: Re: random encounters

Encounters occur whenever you enter a room. Most rooms have a size e.g. 6x6, 4x6 etc. Corners, T-intersections, X intersections and Hallways are not rooms.
When constructing a room you roll on the Encounter chart to determine what is in a room. (usually Monsters, Chests or Both)

Random Events occur when all the results of a roll come up as 1s or 2s.
So if you are trying to disarm a door trap with 3 dice and you roll two 1s and a 2, then a random event occurrs.

Some Quests only have one random event, while others will have a Chart of various events that you roll on.

Hope this helps!

~Shaun
Thread: random encounters

Just looking at the rules and the Troll lair quest, i don't really see how random encounters work, it just says roll to see what comes through a door, another part of the rules say random encounter only happen in a clear room.

am i meant to assume that every clear room and hallway, i get monsters to fight, is this also on a hallway i walk through or the first time, that is normally empty?

Thank you in advance for replies.
Abodi

Tim has it right!
Troll Lair will require the least amount of "construction" to get in and play a game.
The Knocking wall is also an introductory Quest if you don't mind a little extra work for the tiles and figures.
However, if you start with the Troll Lair I would recommend Den of the Orcish Raiders for your next Quest.
Witch of the West Wood is a Level 2 Quest but is a lot more "fun". It was designed with a more humorous approach and is ideal to play in a group, although it still works solo!

Hopefully some more Quests won't be too far away . . .
Maybe "The Troll Lair"
The charts are simple, there are only 3 different Monsters....
You have to print only the first page of the "Den of the Orcish Raiders" Monster beside the normal heroes + tiles...

But: Hey! In "Witch of the West Wood" you can fight bunnies, ducks and squirrels! So go for it!

I just stumbled across this game, and promptly went and downloaded the rulebook. What a cool looking game! This will be my first experience with a "print and play" game, so hopefully all the effort will be worthwhile. At least the price is right!

My question is, once I've gotten through the rulebook and printed off all the game pieces, which of the 4 quests is the quickest and simplest to start off with?

Thanks!
Thread: Version 3 of Dungeon Plungin' has been released!!!

It is hard to believe that it was only a month ago that we decided to update Dungeon Plungin'. The rules have seen a complete revamp with some sections totally changed to make play easier. Players are still in charge of a group of Heroes, plunging into dungeons to rescue maidens, fight monsters and retrieve the treasure but there is a range of new items and the original Quests have been rewritten with more variety. The heroes, monsters and tiles have more colorful artwork and the number of tiles has been reduced so you can get in and play rather than spend time constructing the pieces.

I know we have released the files a week early, but I didn't think anyone would really complain???

The files are available from the Oversoul Games download page.
http://www.oversoul-games.com/oversoul_download.html
The tiles come in black border and white border for those that want to conserve their ink. Only one type is required to play the game.

Thread: Re: rule question

A Hero should get two actions per action phase, however the first of those actions is movement. So with the rules as they currently stand a Hero can move and then perform another action.
How many actions does a hero take in an action phase? There are some suggestions in the book that a hero can take a "second action." How does that work?

Thread: A First Look

This game is a free to download print and play game. It is a straight forward Dungeon Crawl game.

It is described as a GM-less dungeon crawl. It does meet that criteria and uses a lot of dice rolling to represent what would normally be GM duties.

It has a huge RPG feel while remaining completely a board game.

Step one in the game is to create one or more characters. Incidentally you can play solo and build a "party" of characters that you will run your self, or as I've done play with a group of friends taking either 1 or two characters yourself.

There is no "Class" structure for generating characters, instead you spend a number of points to build each charcter. these points allow you to improve attack/defences scores or various skills, such as picking locks, casting magic spells, sprinting and so on. You are also able to spend some of these points to buy special abilities, such as being able to dodge traps make multiple attacks etc.

Once built, you then equip the characters by picking from a list of equipment in the rules and limited by a "Gold" cost.

There is also character advancement, and this can happen during a single session. The "party" will gather Xp (experience) points for carrying out tasks and once a certain level is reached all characters level-up which allows them to gain addition skills and powers.

The game is presented as "basic rules" and dungeon "scenarios" that come seperately. Currently there are two scenarios available.

Each scenario comes with its own objectives, specific scenario rules and floor tiles. There are a lot of floor tiles, but fortunatly these appear to be mostly shared between the scenarios, with only special rooms be differn't.

The basic turn sequence is that "Heros" (the players) cary out their actions, and then the "monsters" carry out their actions.

Each character has "movement" statistics and this equates to the number of squares that it can move during a single turn. After movement a character can carry out another stationary action. This other action can be an attack, casting spell, picking a lock, disarming a trap, searching a chest or any other simple action.

The basic rules describe a number of Monsters but each scenario can and does define its own special monsters. these statistics define not only its move rate and combat abilities but also the "laws" the monster obeys. These laws are a particularly clever feature. Some laws indicate a monster will charge immediately at an enemy, while others dictate that the monster prefers to attack from ambush or behind.

The principal of the game is dungeon exploration, and as I mentioned earlier this is all done with dice. The players characters will start in a the Dungeon entrance tile and as they move into a dungeon room you start rolling dice. Firstly you roll for room type ( corridor or room or special room ).. Then dice for doorways. Roll to decide if there is a door, is it trapped, is it a special door,or if its locked. Roll to see if there are any monsters or Chests in the room. Roll to place the monsters and the direction they are facing. As you can see you roll a lot of dice. The randomness in this process is complete, but is constrained by scenario specific rules. For instance one scenario might suggest giving priority to corridors as opposed to rooms. Or it might prefer Orcs to Ghoblins. Or Traps preferred to Locks, and so on.

Once a room is layed out the characters can interact with it. They can move into it, search and "chests" they find fight any monsters, check doors for traps and try to pick locks on doors or chests that are locked.

Characters will be searching for "Keys", these can be used to open locked chests and doors. They will find Gold in some of the chests and this can used to buy more equipment.

Scenarios have "special" rooms that have unusual features such as resurecting coffins, gateways that let you jump to other rooms.

There is also the "great door" feature. Occassionaly doors are "Great doors" and these need special keys to open them that have to be found by searching chests. These doors hide the "Boss" or a special scenario room.

So to summarise, it's a board game of a dungeon crawl, with the character advancement, treasure hunting and "scenarios" beloved by RPG lovers. It is all boardgame, and a lot of fun can be had by a group talking around the table.

Heres a few suggested changes to the official DOTOR scenario ( available from the designers web site). With these changes you get a more bloodthirsty game with more chance of finding Unique Locations.

Plot Counter (20,40)

Encounter Chart 1D8
1 Empty
2,7 Monsters and Chests, roll 1d4 for the amount of each
3,6 Chests, roll 1d4 for the amount
4,5 Monsters, roll 1d4 for the amount
8 Monsters, roll 1d4+1 for the amount

Special Location Chart 1D6
1,2,3,4 Gate Room
5 Fountain of Healing
6 Sarcoughogus of Revival
Thread: Wheres the Boss?

I had three Heros from a previous mission who had a few XP and needed a few more, so I sent them into this new dungeon.

We were looking for the Princess who was being held somewhere in this dungeon in a cell block.

The Heros were three typical dungeon crawlers. I had the "Tank" whos skill was all in Attack and defence. The "Wiz" was magic focused, and the "Thief" who was totally about opening locks and disarming traps.

They entered into the first room empty. Doors North and door East. Being aware of the shortness of time. I decided to split the party and investigate both doorways.

The Tank went east while the other two went north. In the north they found a romm empty except for a couple of chests. The Wiz and Thief split up to try a chest each.

The Tank entered a corridor and found another doorway to the north.

The Thief opened the chest and found some gold and headed after the Tank.

The Tank looked into the room and found it empty. He carried on down the corridor.

The Wiz failed to open the chest and headed after the tank.

The tank turned the corner at the end of the corridor and froze. The room ahead had two Orcs and a Ghoblin staring right at him. After a pause he smiled, he could take them. Then he heard a growl. His smile faded. He ran back round the corner.

A wolf bounded round the corner and jumped him taking one of his life points.

Tank carried on running. The wolf attacked again and the Tank fought off the teeth!

The Thief came up behind Tank to give a hand.

The Tank faced off against the Wolf as two Orcs came pounding down the Corridor.

The Wizard fired off a Lightning bolt at the wolf, no effect!

Finally the Wolf was cloven by the Tanks mighty blade just before the first Orc piled into the Thief.

The Tank advanced on the Other Orc just at the Thief was killed. The Wizards second Bolt fizzled.

The Tank seeing the Wizard was in trouble returned to take on the first orc and smartly killed it.

Again the Wizards next Bolt was resisted so no effect, but the Tank was on a roll and slaughtered the final Orc.

The two remaining heros marched back to the room and chased the Ghoblin into a corner and quickly depatched it. There were 4 chests in the room and they managed to open two of them and found some gold.

There were two doors in this room. The door to the west was a Great Door and the heros still had a Great Door Key from the previous adventure so opened the door. They had found the cell block. There was an Orc guard in the room but he was looking the other way. The Heros would need a special Key to open cells and to get that key they would have to kill "the boss". They slowly shut the cell room door and went over to the one remaining unopen door.

The tank opened the door and this set off an swinging axe trap. Fortunately the axe bounced off his armour, no sweat. But the room beyond was a Warp gate room with no other doors! There was no where else to go. No way to find "the Boss". Sadly the Heros had to leave without the princess.

Thread: Three hero's one Player

I set up my three Heros.

"The Tank" was going to be the combat specialist, Attack 4, Defence 3, Life 3. Equiped with Battle Axe +3, Platemail +4, Bow +1.

"The Wizard" was going to be ... the wizard. Magic 4. Equiped with Sword +2, Leather Armour +1, Bow +1 and 2 keys. Spells Lightning x3 and 1 Sleep.

"The Thief" detection 4, Disarm 3,Life 2. Equiped with LockPicks,Sword and two keys.

All characters had Move 2.

I was playing the "Den of the Orcish Raiders" scenario. I was looking for the captured princess.

Entered the first room, nothing, three open doorways, I went south.

Entered a three way junction. Room to the south was again empty and had 2 doors, probably locked.

I went East, four open doorways and three chests. Opened the chests and got gold and a Great Door Key. All I needed now was a Great Door!

Looked into the room to the south four chests and 3 Orcs, fortunately all looking the other way so headed east.

The next room had a chest and a Ghoblin. Tank took the Ghoblin while Thief opended all but one chest (trapped). Two doorways to choose from went east.

The next room had an Orc and two Chests. Hacked the Orc down from behind. Two open door ways, one contained a Fountain of healing, the other a Red Gate. Opend the Northern door, it was a Blue gate room.

Headed back one room and checked the Norh doorway. It held a Sarcofagus and a WOLF!

Backed quietly out.

The hero's then had a word with the player and decided that being well into the 30th turn, the mechanics suggested that they bail and return another day to explore the rest of the dungeon.

The end result was rather poor. 8 xp and 49 Gold. That said it's enough to buy a couple of torches which will come in useful when the heros return to find the poor unrescued princess.
