Thread: Playing with 10 players!!!

We had a big group together (gamers and non-gamers) and this was the only game we had that everyone could play together, so we played with 10! Unfortunately the game is so unpredictable with 10 that some people feel hopeless if they take a lot of points with the first couple cards they play. To mitigate this problem we decided that we would have 2 winners, a real winner (the person with the lowest points) and a loser-winner (the person with the highest). It made the game more interesting because now if there was a pile with lots of points in it someone would be trying to take that pile while others were trying to avoid taking it.

At one point there was one pile that had a ton of points and another pile that had only a few points. The other piles were in between, but they all had 3,4 or 5 cards. This set up a situation where two people were trying to play low, but they were going to take different piles based on who played the lowest card. That made it risky to try and play on either of those piles because you didn't know which one would get cleared out.

The final scores for the people going low also were much closer because the people going high were taking most of the points.

We also considered one full hand to be a complete game so we could have lots of winners and loser-winners.

(I think the variation mentioned would only work well for 8+ players.)

Thread: Re: What exactly is a round?

The slide 5 rules are flat out broken. As you noticed, they confuse rounds and hands a lot, and if you play as they are written it becomes a non-game. I've emailed them about it, and they answered "oh well, right, the rules make no sense."

The best terms is probably that a "round" is everybody playing a card. A "hand" is 10 rounds. After each hand you reshuffle and everybody gets 10 more cards. A game is 5 hands.

Thread: Re: What exactly is a round?

Well, in the original version of this game, 6 Nimmt!, a round would be everyone playing their hand of ten cards. Then you shuffle it up and do it again.

In 6 Nimmt!, you play until someone has scored a certain number of points (66, I think), not a preset number of rounds.

Thread: What exactly is a round?

The instructions say that the game is 5 rounds. Later it says that a round is putting a card down on the table and flipping it up. It seems like doing this 5 times might get you one avalanche, and seems for an extremely short game 10 min or less.

Perhaps I'm misreading the instructions.

What exactly does it mean by round?

1 to 104. There is a large number in the middle and they are also numbered in the top left and bottom right corners. The corner numbers are facing in the opposite directions so this helps (a bit) with the confusion, but the numbering is poor.

Also note the cards themselves are poor quality and uncoated, making them susceptible to bending.

1 to 100. But they have little skier symbols on them (they're points in this game); I'm not sure whether that would bother you for your purposes. Also, this game is pretty infamous for having some cards that are hard to tell whether they're right-side up or not (i.e. "Is that a 68 or an 89?"). You'll want to go through and underline the bottom side of numbers to make it more usable.

I'm thinking about buying this game simply to use for my own game design purposes. I'd like a deck of cards numbered 1 to 100.

Are the cards for Slide 5 numbered 1 through 104? Or do they start and end at some higher number?

The rules state there are 104 cards, but they don't mention how they are numbered.

Thread: More avalanches the better !!!
What's in the box?
The game box is small and portable with a easy, straight-forward set of rules. There are 104 cards with bright colors, made from good quality paper stock. They are numbered from 1 to 104, with varying amount of skiers on each card. The skiers represent the amount of penalty points a player receives if he/she takes that card.

How do you play it?
Slide 5 is a reimplementation of 6 Nimmt! and Category 5. I have never played the other games, but the rules appear to be very similar. The goal is to have the least amount of penalty points at the end of the game after 5 rounds (or any predetermined number of rounds to shorten or lengthen the game). On any given turn, all players simultaneously lay down a card from their hand. They then put the cards into four rows of increasing numbers, with the lowest numerical value card going first. The player who's card causes any row to exceed 5 cards, essentially causing an avalanche, will have to take the pile and his card will now start that particular row. There are ways to strategically avoid causing an avalanche, such as playing a card lower than any numerical value in all the rows, which gives that player the right to choose a row to collect instead. That player will have to take some penalty points, but avoids major damage. Once again, his card will now begin the new row. The players continue until all cards in hand are gone, which ends the round. At this point, scores are recorded for each skier that was on his/her penalty cards and then the new round begins.

Is the game fun?
For my gaming group, Slide 5 is usually played as a filler, where we end the game after 3 rounds (about 30 minutes). In this manner, I believe Slide 5 fits the role perfectly. It scales relatively well, but I believe the sweet spot is between 6-8 players, where the game shines unbelievably. That's where the game will generate enough chaos, yet not completely dominated by luck. Slide 5 has some decisions to be made, but they are not brain-burning by any means. It is a quick paced card game that will leave everyone laughing during each turn. I don't believe I would bring the game out too often when there are less than 6 players and this hurts the overall score. However, Slide 5 is still good enough to receive a 7.5/10 and will always be a party favorite.

Are you too lazy to read the review?
Well, here are the pros and cons for Slide 5.
Pros: portable, inexpensive, easy to learn, up to 10 players, fun filler
Cons: not much strategy, too much luck at times, must use variants for under 6 players

Thanks for the answer!

Right now my daughter (4 years old) and I are having fun even though 2 players seems far from the best. I bought it because she had a lot of trouble with double digit numbers, and it's been great - after a few plays, she can now sort her hand perfectly, and most of the time can name her cards correctly as she plays them.

Any time something is a game, she'll learn everything she needs to in order to play. I use that to my advantage whenever I can.

Your interpretation of the Hand is correct. Yeah I was surprised that they did seem to mess up on the word "round" in the rules.

At the end of playing your round (hand) you score the number of skiers everyone has, then shuffle all the cards together and start another round (hand).

I'm afraid that the game play isn't that good with 2-3 players. The game really excels with 5+ players (I prefer 8) then it's a blast.

Thread: Slide 5 edition

I just got slide 5 today. My comments:

Cards: The graphics on the card fronts are nice. The back looks like stock footage, but is OK. The card quality is pretty poor; thin with a cheap finish.

Rules: The rules make no sense. It seems the publisher never even did a test run, showing the rules no newbies. On the front page it says "The game is played in 5 rounds." On the second page, it describes *EACH TIME YOU PLAY A CARD* as being a "round". So if you play by the rules, each player will play 5 of the cards in their hand, then the game ends!

From reading 6 nimmt, I'm guessing that in front they meant to say "the game lasts 5 *HANDS*", with you playing all 10 of your cards in each hand. But I have still one question: Between hands, do you reshuffle everything and start over (including starting over with 4 1-card piles), or do you just deal out 10 more cards to each player in each hand? It seems that when playing with 2 or 3 players, you'll hardly ever fill up a stack in the middle if you start over each time, but I'm not sure.

Thanks!

Thread: Changes from 6 Nimmt!

Some people have asked about any theme changes so it indeed has a skier on the cover, average card quality with the back of the cards matching the cover of the box. The only difference is the end game has changed again. For 6 Nimmt! the end is once one of the players hits 66 points (75 Points for Category 5) finish the round then total all your points. In Slide 5 they have changed it to be a straight 5 rounds (or any agreed upon number of rounds) so there is no random end. Not sure if that is better or worse. It's better in the fact that if your way losing and you have some good rounds but no chance of winning you don't prolong the game in some vain hope everyone else gets 60+ points . It's worse in that you don't have that random feel that you can't predict when it's going to end.

Some other minor term changes are row=hill and the taking of a row is now an "Avalanche" look out! Instead of cow heads it's little downhill skiers, I guess they get rolled up in a giant snowball from the avalanche.

It also comes with these variations:
1) (for 2 to 5 players)Play with only the number of cards as the number of players times 10 and add 4.
2 Players, 24 cards, numbered 1-24
3 players, 34 cards, numbered 1-34
etc...
All cards with higher values are removed from the game. Each player knows all the cards that are in the game.

So players can come up with some elaborate strategy that will meet a grizzly end depending on where you are skiing, Yellowstone has lots of grizzlies (sorry couldn't resist). Typing this in to early in the morning...

2)Play with the same cards as variation 1, Instead of dealing the cards out as normal, spread out all the cards face up. Each player in turn order picks one card until all the players have 10 cards, Use the remaining 4 cards to begin the hills for that hand.

I wish they had added the profi variant (it's fun but when people play this game the math part of their brain shuts off so it can get confusing):
With this option cards can be set on the left of or right on the rows. Be careful since the smallest difference between the card being played and the possible target cards defines whether the card will be placed at the beginning of a row or end of a row. Is it to the left or the right of each row? Example: a row ends with 13, another begins with 23. No other row begins or ends with a value between them. Card 18 would therefore be placed to the right of the 13. A following 21 card would be placed to the left of the 23.

Thread: Seems to be out...but the theme changed???

I see this game listed in a bunch of online shops, but the cover shows a monkey with a banana! No skier on a mountain at all!

Has the theme changed?

It's fairly cheap, around US$8, so I'll pick it up if I see it somewhere. Does anybody have a copy who cares to comment on the quality of the game? Did they get all the rules right?
