Great review!

After reading through the rules to Killer Bunnies (multiple times), I returned the game. I knew that the "zaniness" factor of that light card game would never be enough to overcome the explanation of the complicated (in my opinion) rules I would have to go through, not to mention the extended length of a single game.

Based on a few reviews of GUBS, it sounds like the simple rules and short game-play are exactly what I'm looking for -- perfect for fun family gaming over the holidays!

Thread: Re: Gubs, Gubs, Gubs was chanted all Night long! The Quest For BOB!

Haha! What a great story! I'm glad you shared all this, and I'm really happy you and your friends are enjoying GUBS so much!

I love BOB. Its actually kind of funny because we had a similar thing happen when we were designing the game. Originally all the cards were hand drawn by me on index cards, so each Gub looked slightly different. One gub, however, looked VERY miserable with his arms and antenna drooping sadly, so we called him 'Droopy Gub'. Droopy became the gub everyone fought over, much like Bob.

Anyhow, thanks again. If you're interested in picking up more copies, email me and we can set something up (to keep the international shipping cost low.) Thanks!

- Cole

Thread: Re: Gubs, Gubs, Gubs was chanted all Night long! The Quest For BOB!

I agree. Fun game primarily because of the unpredictable end time and the wild swings in going from 0 to 3 or more GUBS in one turn and vice versa. This is one game in which it is truly not over until it's over.

Thread: Gubs, Gubs, Gubs was chanted all Night long! The Quest For BOB!

Hey All,

The wife and I got invited to a friends for diner and asked to bring games over with us, so I was excited for both since our friend is such a great cook ( she has her own cookbook and has cooked at fancy Eco-Lodges for years down here ).

The Players:

Kim - she just wanted to play gubs
Matt - just wanted to play carcassonne
Me _ I really wanted to get Bohnanza to the table
Toa - just wanted a fun night
Nikko - German Friend who acts like all games are complicated during the explanation, but really enjoys gaming.

K - sat out the first game and was laughing so hard at us playing our first game of gubs she had to join in for the rest

The Scene: So I was about to pull out Carc for the group, but Kim just kept Chanting Gubs, Gubs, Gubs. While her, K, & Toa cleaned up after Diner I taught Nikko and Matt Gubs really quick, thinking we would play it later in the evening. Nikko is German and acted like this was the hardest game to learn and it didn't make any sense to her. So we played a 1/4 game of gubs to teach them and then we sat down to play a full game with 5 of us. Toa was the only one not to have a full understanding of the game but she was fine with that when I explained it is a very easy light game to learn and after our first game she will undertand most of it.

The Game: The first game was a lot of fun and everyone finally understood it. I really enjoyed Nikko thinking this game was just to bizarre and cut throat when I super lured her 2 protected gubs away from her. Then a flash flood game and took away my poor defenseless gubs and Nikko was much happier and started to warm up a little more to the game. The thing with newbies in Gubs that I have seen is that you feel you need to play all your cards as soon as you can. Over time and many many games I have found it is a odd mix of saving cards and having a bunch in your hand, but also using what you need along the way since at any time you could lose your whole hand of cards. It is hard to explain to someone that is is a good thing to trap a gub of your own early on, but after a game or two it becomes obvious to everyone I have played with so far.

The game has such a great feel for a light game for me. If you don't know about gubs then here it is: You got a deck of cards with funny cool drawings on them that do bizarre things and you have 3 with a letter each on them ( G U B ) so when you pick up a letter you have to play it right away ( they are called event cards and there a few different kinds that get played as soon as you pick it up ) by just placing it face up on the table. When the last letter is drawn the game is over ( well unless you got the Flop Hat, which we all call the Mexican flop hat for some reason - oh yea or if you have the Cricket song Card that is a wild card and could be used as a Flop hat card ). What this means is at the start of the game it is all fun and games and a balancing act of trying to save good cards but knowing you may lose your cards also. After the first letter is drawn it gets a little more exciting, but once the 2nd letter is drawn and placed on the table is when the game really begins. Every card drawn could end the game and this is when it usually becomes pretty cut throat and a whole lot of fun. A lot of the cards have you putting cards back inthe deck and shuffling the deck, I really like this part of it since it means you just never know when that next letter will be showing up. Another aspect of the game I like and my group last night really enjoyed and commented on was that this is different then most card games in that you take your turn and then your draw a card that ends your turn and you can not use that card till next turn ( unless it is an event card which has to be played right away, but event cards are all bad for you or the group in general ). Some of the cards have our Beloved Gubs on them. You place them in front of you and can leave them as free gubs , you could place a barricade on them to help protect them, or you can trap them. SO at the end of the game who ever has the most free or barricaded gubs in front of them wins ( trap gubs don't count towards the win ). You can play the cards you have on yourself or on others along the way.

By the end of the game everyone had the game down but we where sure laughing a lot and K was just enjoying laying down for a few and listening to us go back and fourth. NIkko and Kim thought they won when the 3rd card letter came up, but Matt had the Cricket Song Card and used it as a flop hat to shuffle the last letter back into the deck. A few turns later after much back and fourth amongst us and I ended up tieing Nikko for the win.

Gubs, Gubs Gubs: So I went to pull out Carc and start another game saying we could play more gubs later, but the people where here nothing of it. Kim and Nikko just started chanting Gubs
Nikko said she was not ready to learn a new game and wanted to play of this fun game called Gubs. Toa said Gubs was a lot of fun and we should play that one again.

So K said she had to join in because we sounded like we where having way way to much fun. We played 3 more games of Gubs and that was our whole game night. Everyone had such a good time and they all loved the game more with each game played as they learned more and more about it and figured out how best to use all the cards. At one point Nikko Stole all of Matt's 4 free gubs near the very end of the game. only to have me streal them all from her and then K steals one from me, kills one, and traps the other 2. Then Kim spears the 2 trapped gubs of mine to free them and then kills one and then steals one - this all happened in just one round and it was so funny to see it happen. The game really got more fun and exciting with each game as we where enjoying it so much and they understood it better with each game.

What About BOB: So this is a great game with adults and kids alike. Kids really enjoy it because it is easy and a whole lot of fun, plus being a quick game that takes about 15 minutes is perfect for kids( well with 3 or 4 people it can be a 15 minute game, our games where much longer last night with more people ).

So I taught me neices and nephew this one when I first got it and they loved it. My niece asked if she could put a R on the gub for Racheal ( her name ). My first thought was "OMG - do you really think I would let you write on a game card of mine?" but then I thought about it for a second and thought she is 12 let her do it, it doesn't affect the game and it will make her happy. Then her sister wants to put a K on a gub, so I let her. Then of course Andrew asked about putting 3 letters on one for him. I am like what 3 letters and he says " BOB" I think this is kinda strange but agree to it, not knowing the power of BOB and how he would affect all games of mine to come.

So when I explain why 1 gub says Bob on him everyone always feels like Bob is the coolest Gub and the one that everyone wants. As soon as someone gets Bob I look around the table and say we must all try to Take Bob from him/her or Bob's luck will win him/her the game and then it is a free for all to get and keep Bob. He is very sought after in our games and changes hands an awful lot. It is great to then hear other people start to say things like " everyone, we must steal or Kill Bob for the good of all Gubkind " - and we all start to laugh or get big ol grins on our faces. It is really fun to see people start looking around and be like " Where is BOB ", so we have learned that BOB will bring you luck but he will also bring everyone else at the table to your door step trying to take BOB from you.

I highly recommend personalizing your Gub game with a name on 1 or 2 of your gub cards if you want to make a great fun game even funnier. A personalized game is just more fun to play is what I have found and I will not hesitate to do it in other games in the future!

Fun Factor: This is just a great game and I have only found 1 of my friends who just found it OK, but I have about 10 friends who consider this to be one of the best games I bring to our game nights. It is also a great game to have a few drinks with since it is a light fun game and should not be taken serious in any way shape or form. It is really a luck feast on the one hand, but it does have a lot of choices and IMO just a really really fun game! I wanted to make this the easy light last game of the night, but when the chanting of Gubs gets loud enough all other games must be forgotten!

Game On'

Thread: Cricket Song Questions?

We have been playing that the Cricket song could be a Interrupts ( A type of tool ) - and using it as a flop boat once in a while?

Is that correct ( I am guessing a type of tool counts as a tool, but thought I would make sure since we are having so much fun playing this a lot , I figured I better just make sure )???

This has become a friends of mine and my nieces favorite game it is so fun!

Thread: So Fun my friend ask me to get one - I have gotten another person to buy a game.

Hey All,

So I have a few game friends but I am the guy who buys all the games and lugs them around where ever I go. My best gaming bro back home is all about 9 hours of gaming a day, but his only game is cribbage. I am showing him lots of new games and we are finding out what he likes and doesn't like ( so am I as a lot of the games are new to me also.

So we play the game Gubs - and he loves it, then we play with his girlfriend who is a lawyer and not much into games and she actually liked it and got into the light fun mood of it - with a lot of help from me making noise and we are all trash talking in a fun way. So my friend tells me he wants to buy it, I say we can get it at GenCon for him - he says "Buy It" and I am one happy camper.

Sure it is only 1 game, but it represents a start to me, a friend getting into games enough that he will buy games. Part of the reason I am so amazed is that he is broke right now, work is slow for him and he needs the $, so for him to want to buy the game says a lot.

Gubs is a really really fun easy to learn light game that is worth buying. I will be playing it some at GenCon this year in the open gaming room, a whole lot of Fun.

Game On'

Thread: A Fun Little Filler

I just got Gubs the other day and have been waiting to get it to the table. The game says it is lucked based, but then I feel any game like this is lucked based - especially when you bring in dice or cards. It is actually a fun little game that is very easy to learn and very easy to play. We only got to play it with 2 people and we both wanted to play more games, so that is a good start for any game.
I was playing my friend Bubba at this little filler game thinking it would be the perfect game to play out on the patio while having a few beers. I was right - it was perfect. The first game is basically just learning the cards, but I lost it pretty bad. He was getting a lot of good cards. I noticed we got a card middle early, middle and middle late ( the lettered cards that end the game ). Which happens most of the time ( 1 game we got all 3 cards pretty early ). I think the one weird feature I am not use to is all the card shuffling while you put cards back in and have to shuffle them in.
OK, so now we know the game and we are ready for a rematch ( we are talking a 10 - 15 game here ). I keep putting my gubs down and protecting them, but it seems he always has the cards needed to take them away or kill them. So I am getting nowhere trying to keep gubs in front of me. He then gets the esteemed elder also so now I am down 3 gubs to nothing. Well I do have one under a ring, but it does me no good. The B card comes up & we know our time is limited. A card comes that takes all his cards but the esteemed elder so I am good. A lot of funny little luck based things happen through out the game - which makes it a great game to play with kids. Bubba made me lose my whole hand, bad, then the next card I get lets us trade hands - yea, so Bubba got nothing and I had his hand ( it sucked anyways and didn't help ). There are times through out the game where you will lose your hand, and at first it seems terrible but then you realize it isn't that big of deal. I then got lighting and got rid of his esteemed elder, yea. It is rolling along well and the U card comes up, so when the G card comes up it is done for. We are going back and fourth stealing or killing each others gubs and he has one when the G comes up on me for His win.

We played 5 more games and he won the next 2 and thought he was the champ, then later that night I won the last 3 by a large margin every time, where his wins where mainly all by one gub.

We had a lot of fun playing this one and it is a great end of the day game where you don't want to think to much, but you want to get a couple more game in. Look for this one being played at GenCon - cause I will be playing some in the Open Game Room - I can tell this will be a lot more fun with more then 2 people.

Game On'

Check it out, folks:

http://www.gtweekly.com/a-e/people/gubbed-out

This is really cool because I actually live by Santa Cruz. The only mistake they made is saying that the game is available in 30 states and 5 countries, which is not what I said. I told them we'd sold decks to people in those places, but the game is not in stores across the country... yet.

Anyhow, in other news, GUBS will be available (even if I'm not physically present) at both GenCon Indy and ConQuest SF. I also have some people checking out Comic Con for me, to see if that might be something worth taking GUBS to next time around. I also am thinking about going to the Toy Fair (I believe its in New York?) Does anyone know anything about that?

GUB ADVENTURES is still under development. But its seeing some pretty cool developments. To be totally honest World of Warcraft: the Adventure Game sort of swept in and ripped off a bunch of my ideas (I know this kind of thing happens in development stages all the time, I'm not bitter ) but I've got a new idea that will work much better for the GUBS world, semi inspired by Talisman 4th Edition mixed with some of my own mechanics (don't worry, its NOT a roll and move )

Another project which is very much in the beginning stages is a computer game version of the GUBS card game. This would be a single player game that would be free to download online, so that people could try GUBS before they buy it. I imagine this will be finished sometime this year, but like I said, its in the planning stages now. More info on this to come.

- Cole Medeiros
Creator of GUBS

I know I already responded to you via email, but I thought I'd respond here for anyone else who might be wondering.

Unfortunately, I will not personally be at ConQuest SF. I originally planned to have a booth but then discovered I will be out of town attending a wedding of a good friend, so I can't make it. I'm excited that you'll be there with GUBS decks though, so anyone reading this, check out the Good Luck Games booth!

I have someone who will be representing GUBS at GenCon Indy, and I'm buying a showcase there at the GPA booth.
Thread: Make $$$ Playing GUBS

Note - I already posted this in the section in the forums about Conventions, but so far I am only considering one person. Just wondering if anyone else is interested.

---

Hey there fellow Geeks:

So, I have an offer for you - I am looking to "hire" someone who is already planning on attending Gen Con Indy. Basically, I'd like to go there myself to promote my game GUBS: A Game of Wit and Luck but I'm not sure I can afford to (I'm in California).

Instead I thought, maybe I can hire someone who would be interested in basically being a representative for GUBS at Gen Con. I'm really only asking for 4 - 5 of hours total, basically take a little stand up sign that I would provide you, along with a free deck of GUBS, and go find a space in either Open Gaming or where ever works (possibly by the Game Publishers Association's booth, if they are going to be there and space is somehow available, I'll have to talk with them. I'm a GPA member but I don't know if they are going and what the deal is yet.)

Depending on the level of commitment an applicant is willing to show for me, I'm talking about paying this person up to $200. So consider that and send me a geek mail if you're interested.

Some requirements:

1) Friendly attitude
2) Experience with running games or demoing stuff a plus, of course
3) Enjoy games like GUBS: A Game of Wit and Luck (check out the listing)
4) Willing to sit there playing GUBS pretty extensively for a few hours

Thanks!

- Cole Medeiros
Creator of GUBS

I'm happy to get so many responses on the topic! Here are some answers:

stormseeker75 wrote:
...I for one would be interested in a game that explores their world.

That is definitely the main focus of the board game. Put some things in context, introduce characters, locations, and some storyline only hinted at so far.

Actually, as far as GUBS back story, I've been working on some artwork which may turn into a project for a graphic novel / comic book / illustrated book. Some of the work can be seen on my blog:

http://trinidain.wordpress.com

Runehardt wrote:
We've already discussed a few home made expansion cards but Haven't made them yet. I feel the Gubs need to be actual figures in the game. Little plastic guys would be so cool.

What are your ideas for expansions to GUBS, if you don't mind me asking? I'd be interested to know. Also, I've made some miniatures (they are just mock ups for now) and I may post a picture in the near future. The board game will at the very least have little gubs for pawns, if not more, if I have any say about it.

Runehardt wrote:
If you're going to go to a bunch of conventions you should make a GUBS costume. Get somebody to run around in a well made Gubs costume handing out promo cards!

There IS a gubs costume. I'd upload a picture but I have a feeling the BGG wouldn't let it through, because its not directly game related. I might try anyways.

abrannan wrote:
I want to know what it is about Gub physiology that causes them to change sides/allegiances. How does that shape Gub culture?

There is a back story that further explains the mysterious 'Lures'. More on that to come.

Reprint wrote:
I think you've created an interesting little world. I'd love to jump into a boardgame. But, I can't see making an expansion to the card game. Could you make enough cards to make an go of that?

Thanks! I enjoy the gubs world a lot, too, its very close to my heart. I'm not sure the card game will get an expansion, but its a question I get a lot. If enough good ideas pop up, it may be a project I work on. I guess this is kind of why I'm asking if that's something of interest here.

One Fat Pug wrote:
Given that two of their main foes seem to be the Wasps and Omen Beetles, it would be interesting to have a game where the GUBs go to war against the insect community. This is a big element of the board game. And while the Omen Beetles are mainly wild creatures which bring catastrophe to the gubs, the Wasps make up part of a hostile force which plots and plans against them...

Glad for your responses! Once the prototype is further along, there will probably be some pictures up here or on my blog.

- Cole

Thread: Expansions? Sequel?

Hello:

First an update. GUBS is doing very well, we're getting on some local store shelves, planning our appearance at conventions around California, waiting for another news story to air (they came to my house a few weekends ago and interviewed me about self-publishing), and generally promoting GUBS to the best of our abilities. It's a lot of fun and a great deal of hard work, but so far so good.

I have a question for those of you who have played and enjoyed GUBS, the card game. I've been working on a sequel for some time now. The idea is that now that folks have met the gubs in the quick and simple card game, with the GUBS board game (under development) they can delve deeper into the GUBS world and explore it through a form of quest adventure.

My question is mainly just out of curiosity, but I'd love to know what any of you guys and gals would like to see / learn more about / play with in the sequel. I'm interested to know. Though the prototype is almost ready for play testing (I've gone through three major drafts so far) its still in the soft, mailable state where suggestions can drastically alter the path the game takes towards completion.

Let me know.

- Cole Medeiros

The method you describe is the original tie breaker rules. In the event of a tie, I always found it to be pretty amusing to let fate decide.

While playing GUBS at conquest last weekend we decided to end our ties by allowing the next Gub drawn from the stack decide the winner (while the "losers" shuffled the discards for the next game Fun, light hearted game that reminded me of a simpler Fluxx.

A closer detail of the original GUBS deck (notice the glaring spelling mistake!). Besides the text being heavily edited, many cards have changed from the original draft; this "Power Lure" was changed into the "Cyclone" for the published version.
This is a shot of the original GUBS deck, created on chopped up bits of index cards when I was very young. The pencil is worn and smudged from being played so much.
