Thread: An Epic battle between Aunt Bubba and niece Ginger

Yesterday on Thanksgiving day we decided to play a game of Farkel. There were six players: my uncle Pete, my sister Alice (aka Aunt Bubba), my Dad, myself, my daughter Ruth, and my daughter Ginger. In order to start scoring, each player must get 500 points. On the first round, Bubba got three sixes on her first roll, keeping them for a 600. Ginger rolled a 1-6 straight for 1500 points. The other four of us missed the 500 point barrier. From there on the two of them stayed out in front, as the rest of us were unable to get the rolls we needed when we needed them.

After 7 rounds Bubba broke 5000 points with a two triplets roll for 2500 points, getting her to 6300. Ginger managed to chip away at Bubba's lead after 2 or 3 more rounds.

After Bubba stretched her point total to 9150, Ginger closed to within 500, with a total of 8650. Then Bubba rolled 3 sixes and decided to risk it for more. She missed. Ginger then got lucky and rolled three pairs for 1500, and rolled all 6 dice again for 450 more, keeping 1950 for the round and 10600 for the game. Everyone got one final try, but no one came close.

Final score:

Ginger - 10,600
Bubba - 9,150
Pete - 7,700
Dad - 6,850
Ruth - 6,000
Me - 5,000

Thread: Re: Anybody have the rules for Farkel?

I have played this game under numerous rule sets. Different groups I have played with have also evoled their house rules. I never knew the game as "Farkel." To me it was just called "dice" or "1500." We played it a bunch back in college.

It has been a while, so I can't remember many of the house rules, but one of my favorites was that if you were down to rolling two dice, and they matched, they counted for 100 x the number rolled (except if you rolled 1's, then they scored 1000).

A few years ago I did an internet search for dice game rules and was able to find some rules for it. I also have a book on dice games and the rules are in there as well. But again, each version I have found has similar rules, but usually with some minor differences.

[edit] The Wikipedia entry cited above looks fairly comprehensive, so much so, I printed a copy to stash in my dice games rules folder.

In glancing at the wiki entry for Farkel, it looks fairly good.

I have Farkel at home. I believe I have the instructions for it in the little container it came in. Send me your email address and I can forward it to you.

Also, here is a link to FAQ from the makers of Farkel:

http://www.pocketfarkel.com/frequentquestions.html

Thread: Week three

To round off the night, Tracy had returned with a set of rather impressive dice, and started to teach Sue and Mark1 a dice game.

It soon turned out to be the original traditional dice game that Volle Lotte (or Tutto) is based on, but just the dice element, and not the cards.

*** Edit: Since found the game on BGG listed as Farkel, and have updated the session accordingly ***

Sue took an early lead with a score of 1150, but Tracy's slow and steady progress and sensible banking won out in the end. Mark's score suffered from taking too many risks (the reason why I always lose at Tutto), and Sue had a valliant effort at overtaking Tracy with her remaining go, but fell about 400 points short.

Final Scores:

Tracy - 6150
Sue - 4700
Mark1 - 2800

And that was the end of another fun evening for the Shire Gamers.

Thanks to all who came.

Thread: Re: routine filler

What are the chances of getting no ones or fives or triples when rolling 6 dice? I'd like to see those odds calculated.

The chance of rolling a 1 or 5 on one die is 1/3, so the chance of not rolling a 1 or 5 is 2/3. On 6 dice, then, the probability of no 1s or 5s is simply 2/3 raised to the 6 power, or 8.8%.

The probability of triples is a little more complicated. First, we've already ruled out rolling a 1 or a 5. So, we're calculating the probability of rolling triple 2s, 3s, 4s, or 6s. We need 3 dice to come up a specific number (1/6), and 3 dice to come up any number, except 1 or 5 (2/3). This is ~0.14% for a specific number, and since we can get triples on 4 numbers, it's ~0.55% overall. This makes your total probability of getting no 1s, 5s, or triples about 8.3%.

Note: Math people may be inclined to quibble, in that I double counted situations where you roll two triples simultaneously, but it's good enough for an engineer.

Thread: routine filler

This game is such a great portable filler.
We had 30 minutes to kill before the funeral.
It was too windy outside the coffee shop to play cards, so we broke out the pocket farkel (the one that comes in a film canister with the scoring printed on a sticker on the outside of it.)

The requirement to score 500 to get into the game adds some tension. I already had over 1000 by the time my wife entered, and I kept the lead for most of the game. But then towards the end, I farkeled out on my first roll twice! What are the chances of getting no ones or fives or triples when rolling 6 dice? I'd like to see those odds calculated.

So in the end, Jen won by 200 points. I didn't mind losing since the time was pleasantly spent.
