o_cedar wrote:
Complete opposite for us...

Without the special cards, it's a 55-45 for Black
With the special cards, it becomes a 70-30 for Light

Palantir really seems weak compared to the monstrous Gandalf and ShadowFax cards...

This is my impression too. We found Dark won more often without the special cards for the two reasons that the special cards proceed to remedy for Light - 1. Getting Frodo across the mountains, and 2. Gandalf dying too early.

Shadowfax means Frodo can win from two spaces away, or can cross the mountains in one go! Both are extremely powerful.

Gandalf is the best piece for Light and if the Light player can get Gandalf back a second time, it's usually curtains for the Dark player.

Try Stratego 4. It is very different than original stratego, since the object is to occupy the middle of the board by "carrying" your flag. No special cards to alter the outcome of the battle though.

Thread: Re: Confrontation at the Gates of Mordor

Sorry about the lack of clarity. Mordor was not occupied. At the end, the Witch-king and Warg occupied the 2 spots next to Mordor (Gondor and something else). I used the river to move both Frodo and Sam one-by-one sideways to the Gondor-side to "half the field". Turns out the Gondor-side was the Witch-king, and not the Warg (which was good. If it turned out to be the Warg and I won, the Witch-king could then attack sideways against Sam and potentially win and block Frodo). Sam had to clear a path in Gondor, before Frodo could scoot forward into Gondor, then Mordor.

I, um, kept saying "Gates of Mordor", because somehow, Sam fighting the Witch-king in Gondor just sounds wrong. I see how that's confusing :yuk:

Once he is over the Mountains and the good guy still has Shadowfax (allows you to move twice with the same character), the bad guy better had some armies left (preferably the Warg: He ignores the annoying "side-step if attacked" ability).

Thread: Confrontation at the Gates of Mordor

I was taught this game by somebody who hadn't played it yet, didn't know anything about Lord of the Rings, but had studied the rules. I had feared playing this game due to the abstract-looking treatment of the Lord of the Rings, and I'm a big Lord of the Rings fan, but even as he explained individual characters to me, I started to warm up to the game, big time.

Game 1
My shadow vs. his free peoples. I stuck Shelob in Moria, pretending he was the Balrog. Pippin ruined my subterfuge when he poked his head into the caves and ran back screaming. Shelob charged out at Pippin and ate him, but died of food poisoning. Then Gandalf punched through from the river-side and romped all over my territory, killing my Orcs, my Warg and my Witch-king before finally being stopped, and the game was basically over by then. Checkmate was sealed when I accidentally knocked over my Flying Nazgul piece, revealing it. There was a good character ready to attack him. I feared my opponent, seeing it was a Flying Nazgul, would kill him immediately if that good character was Legolas, so I used the Flying Nazgul to hit his last character...and it was Legolas.

Game 2
This was an EPIC conflict, and what motivated me to write this report. I was the free peoples player this time. At the start, Orcs poured from Moria, killing Aragorn instantly, but Gimli provided swift revenge. Another evil presence grew in Moria, and Pippin was a nosey parker and found himself a Cave Troll before running away and hiding behind Gimli, who was also quaking in his boots. The Cave Troll pursued Pippin and ate him, before finding out he was allergic to Hobbit meat. The Flying Nazgul and Boromir fought to a draw. The Black Rider romped near the Shire, killing Merry. I was now down to Frodo, Sam, Legolas and Gandalf, with the Balrog slowly bearing down upon the Shire. Frodo and Sam escaped. Gandalf then got ambushed by Shelob and both died nasty deaths. The situation looked dire as Frodo and Sam crossed the mountains, with Frodo escaping narrow death from the watchful eyes of Saruman. Legolas had stayed behind to defend the Shire and got cut down for his efforts. There now stood Frodo and Sam against two defenders of Mordor, the Witch-king and Warg, with time running out for the good guys as Saruman approached the Shire to join the Black Rider and Balrog at the victory feast.

2 against 2 at the gates of Mordor. I knew he had a Witch-king and Warg, but didn't know which was which. He knew I had Frodo and Sam, but didn't know which was which. Something had to give.

I moved Frodo to the right, splitting the pair momentarily. My opponent wisely decided not to do anything due to the uncertainty of who was who, choosing instead to force my hand by pushing Saruman inexorably forward. Sam joined Frodo on the right, cutting the field in half and guaranteeing that there would only be one minion to face on the path to Mordor...provided the minion on the deserted side wasn't the Witch-king. My opponent moved this piece up onto the same level as Frodo and Sam, guaranteeing no retreat for Frodo...the time to act was now!

Sam charged ahead, not knowing whether he would face a Witch-king or Warg. It was the Witch-king. Sam was brave in charging forward, but not brave enough to sacrifice himself nobly. His lack of courage got him slain, and Frodo was surrounded, and quickly killed on the next turn.

On the penultimate turn, it was a battle of wits. I had the option of playing a 5 to beat the Witch-king, or to use Noble Sacrifice to clear the path for Frodo to charge ahead to Mordor. He could counter the 5 with his own 3 (his highest card left), or cancel Noble Sacrifice with the Great Eye. I chose 5. He chose 3. Game over.

I was surprised that I still had a chance to win the game all the way at the end, with puny Frodo and Sam fighting for time against 5 minions.

Thread: Frodo Victorious Twice!

The wife and I brought out LotR:Confrontation last night, which we hadn't played for a little while. We had been getting better at this game in the past before getting distracted by other games. I think Frodo had successfully destroyed the ring about twice in 14 games between us in the past. It is true that the Sauron side is a bit easier for newcomers to the game since you can push ahead with brute strength.

We agreed to play a two-game set (the only way to play).

Game 1:
My wife was the Fellowship in Game 1, and it didn't start out so hot for me. We were trading characters one for one, which is not good for the Sauron side because it means the board is getting cleared for Frodo to skip his way across to Mordor. I also lost the Orcs early without getting a chance to use them. I hate when that happens! Things stabilized a bit in the mid-game and we entered the end game with me having about four guys hanging back. I identified a two-Fellowship cluster as Sam and Frodo on the left side, so I blocked off their advance and began to position myself to crush Frodo. During this time, however, my wife made a run on the right side with a single Fellowship character into Mordor, and lo and behold it was Frodo! I was extremely surprised, and she was ecstatic. She said she decided to use the decoy method early on, and she executed it perfectly.

Game 2:
We switched sides, and I took the side of the Fellowship. I have a bad habit of advancing on the right side and never having a chance to use the river to my benefit, so this time I planned to advance on the left side. I often carefully set up my advances, so I decided to surprise my wife by doing something different this time. I set up Boromir and Gandalf on the left side and rushed forward immediately. Boromir attacked the first guy he reached and it turned out to be the Orcs! Hooray! My wife was disappointed that she didn't get to use the Orcs and I noted that I felt her pain since I didn't either the last game. Gandalf immediately followed and wreaked some havoc on the left side before getting blown up with a Noble Sacrifice. Those two had successfully punched a gaping hole in the left side, and in the mid-game the Flying Nazgul and Dark Rider got taken out, so Frodo was safe to rush through the mountains. He hurried forward and arrived on the steps of Mordor with one Sauron guy waiting there. He came out and attacked, and it was the Warg. Fortunately, my wife didn't have the right cards to take Frodo down so he dispatched the Warg and waltzed into Mordor.

I can't wait to play this game some more in the near future. I feel like we turned an important corner in learning to play effectively with the Fellowship, and the game will only get better from here. It gets better and better with repeat plays as there are both strategy and tactics involved, and both of them contain elements of subterfuge.

Just finished the 3rd game....delayed from last weekend due to....well, a 3.5 year old and a 10 month old sometimes change your plans....

I got off to a great start defeating 3 of the Dark characters and only losing Boromir but I had to use 3 text cards....my darling wife came back with a vengeance and went on a 5-1 run that left me with Frodo, Sam and Legolas...I just knew I was toast. The crucial play was when she sent the Warg to attack the region with Sam and Frodo - Sam took up for Frodo and sliced up the Warg. I thought I was home free after that exchange because she was out of position and Frodo had a lane on the left side of the board.....but, I forgot about the Witch King being able to attack sideways...OH S%*!...I used Frodo's retreat sideways ability to move where the Witch King was prior to attacking (we checked the rules and it seems legal?) so I dodged a serious bullet....after that Frodo weaved into Mordor and victory......what a game....I recommend this simple yet intensely thought provoking game for all board game lovers.

A game is comprised of two matches. You should start playing one side, then change from light to dark or viceversa. At the end of each match, the winning player receives one point for each surviving character. After the two matches, the player with more points (your wife, by the look of it) wins the game!

If I recall correctly, the instructions suggest that both players play both sides, and if both win one, then it's a draw or something. It's better than one person mastering one type of playing style for one side.

This is probably the game I play most with my wife now. It's pretty good for couples, as long as the competitiveness doesn't get out of hand. I would say that we actually get less competitive with this game than we do with Carcassonne :)

Feel free to share your results after your third game :)

Thread: The Confrontation....with wife!

I have now played this wonderful game 2 times.......both with my wife. She is a fan of the LORT movies but not a diehard like myself who read the books several times.

The first game was a learning but very intense.....we are both very competitive. I took the Light side based on what I have read on this site to give her a little advantage. My strategy was to trade characters and then make a run for it with Frodo once the board had cleared somewhat. All was going to plan until I failed to account for the Winged Nazgul still being in play........she realized his ability just at the right moment and flew back to whack Frodo as he was about to enter Mordor............ARGHHH!!!!!

The second game was even more intense....I was anxious to redeem and she was anxious to keep bragging rights. I was the Light again and the plan was the same......was working wonderfully......I had only Shelob and the Warg between Frodo and paydirt.......then I had Frodo dodge Shelob and I just knew I was home free....however, Shelob chewed up Merry and returned to Gondor (which I had not taken into account) so I was in dire straights. All cards had been played and so we returned our full complement.......this is where I got lucky....I attacked the Warg and she played a text card instead of a strength card (beginner mistake) so Frodo stabbed the Warg and coasted to Mordor. She can't get over her mistake. The 3rd game will be this weekend...........

I think the full rulebook does a good job at the end where it goes through each character card in detail.
Just picked this game up, loads of fun. This is probably a dumb question but I just wanted to make sure. On a players turn, he or she can only move one character, right?

Also, can a player choose not to use a characters ability?

Thanks guys.

Thread: First time at Lord of the Rings - Confrontation

Sometimes I'll break out a game too 'old' for my young boys that has a good theme, just to see how they like it. Tonight I tried for the first time with them Lord of the Rings: The Confrontation (it's the Deluxe version, but we played the basic game rules and pieces). We teamed up, with me and youngest taking the forces of Mordor and my two other boys (ages 7 and 8) playing the Fellowship. Initial setup was essentially random. :shake:

They did know enough about the LotR that Sam was Frodo's bestest buddy and should hang close, and that Gandalf should be nearby in case there was trouble (good ideas, even though they had not read the special ability texts :p )

My young son was aggressive moving up the monsters that looked the toughest, and the Witch King and Balrog soon went over the mountains looking for a fight. The former found one quickly, alas it was Boromir. Fellowship team was sad to have someone leave the board so quickly, but was glad to see the mean old Witch King go. The Balrog did a number on Gimli, then Legolas pulled a Noble Sacrifice on him (not a bad move!) The next tough guy over the mountains was Saruman, though Gandalf came up and tied him to knock both out. Nazgul killed a stray Merry, but were in turn killed by Aragorn. I was doing my best to 'act out' the battle based on the characters and what cards the kids chose. (That definitely added a lot to their enjoyment of the game  )

The board was definitely starting to clear out. With more experienced players, the fellowship had a significant advantage. Sam and Frodo headed right but were sad they could not cross the mountain together. 7-yo launched Frodo into the mountains (ruh-roh!) His brother thought was a minute whether to move up the Cave Troll or to go ahead and attack that brazen character in the mountains (could it be a decoy?) He was just enjoying attacking so much, that he attacked the lone character with Shelob. In the previous round, we used our last card (retreat) to cycle the deck. Now with a full stack, I asked my teammate which card to play. With a big grin on his face, he chose 'the pretty orange one with the eye'. The other team was making a normally good choice with retreat, but the Eye of Sauron prevented that from taking place. Chalk up a win for the dark side! :sauron:

I thought the fellowship would be crushed, but to my delight, they started cheering "Yay Shelob, good job!" and congratulating their brother :what: They immediately asked to play again, and suggested switching sides. Then they noticed the character cards flipped over and thought that was utterly cool. Now that the game was over, they were finally starting to notice the secret abilities. "What can Merry do?" "Ah, he has a special power, should he ever run into the Witch King, he automatically kills him!" "Wow, can we go after the Witch King with Merry next time!?" "Great plan, son, go for it." Alas, the force that is more powerful than even Sauron spoke - "Time for bed boys!" shouted mom from the other room. With a "Yes ma'am" and a hug  , my little gamers trotted upstairs. :snore:

Given how much fun I'm having with games like these, I think I need to write more session reports so I can get a "Plays games with children" microbadge :D

I find the deluxe characters interesting and worth having a spin with, but the first is of better size.

I prefer the artwork on the original, but some people do prefer the artwork on the deluxe.

The stands are ridiculous in the deluxe edition, but I found I had to duck down a bit to see the ones in the original.

To complicate things more, I would say it would be awesome if they had the deluxe, but used the art of the first with the size of the stands of the first, but the graphics of the second board on the size of the first.:p

ie. both have their advantages ;)

Ben.

I prefer the original, for all the reasons noted above.

The art is a matter of taste. I find the new art industrial/commercial and (surprisingly) less functional and harder to read and use (despite being more "professional" and having more space to work with):

(Deluxe on left)

(Deluxe on right)

(Deluxe on left)

Relative sizes of related components are accurate.
The variant characters add very little - after a few games with them we reverted back to the original characters - they are simply better designed.

However, the delux version is, well, delux. I prefer playing with it than the original, although I grant that the original is more compact.

The game is not totally balanced. Black WILL win much more with no special cards, but add Shadowfax and White's chances improve a lot.

BUT it does not actually matter - it is a GREAT game even with some imbalance. Personally, I think Black should be a bit stronger, just to stay with the theme.

I printed them myself quite some time ago and as I recall, I had to cut a bit of the lower part of the pieces, nearly touching the number, in order to see the names properly.
Very Nice. I too have made the deluxe set, paying homage to Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movie (both standard & deluxe). I would not that your text would have to be inset a lot more so that it is legible when you slot them into the holders. I too had a lot of trouble squeezing in the text esp with the deluxe ed. I would post mine to BGG but I believe it would breach copyright..sigh

Hi,

Just wanted to promote my redesigned deluxe variant pieces for the standard game, which I recently posted to the files section. To have a sneak peek of the PDF, I have created a jpg preview:

EDIT: You may have to cut the pieces so that the cut line nearly touches the bottom of the number. This way you get better view to the names from the isometric, i.e. warlord, perspective. For some pieces, this is not possible due to descriptive text reaching further below than the number.

Downloadable PDF version:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/file/info/26821

All hail to the Howe, Nasmith, McBride and Bohemian Weasel for their beautiful illustrations.
