Thread: User Review

If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It!

Clue: The Card Game takes the original board game a step further: Mr. Boddy has been killed, but the murderer has escaped and is headed to an unknown location via an unknown mode of transportation. There are still the original six suspects, but the six weapons have been replaced with vehicles (Airliner, Automobile, Train, Hot Air Balloon, Seaplane, and Limousine). The nine rooms of the mansion have been replaced with destinations from all over the country (Coney Island, Niagara Falls, Lincoln Memorial, Miami Beach, Mt. Rushmore, Old Faithful, Golden Gate Bridge, The Alamo, and Hoover Dam). There are also action cards that help in making suggestions, eliminating suspects, etc.

The only advantage over the board game is, obviously, no moving around the board at a snail's pace, and you don't have to worry about another player snatching you up and plopping you down on the other side of the board just as you were about to enter a particular room. But it just isn't the same; at least that made the board game more of a challenge. I love the board game, and was excited about the card game until I played it.

The game is fast-paced compared to the board game, and is suitable as a filler, much like Razzia and Reiner Knizia's Vampire. But the game does nothing to improve on the original, and in fact takes away from it. I wish I could love it, but this game just isn't necessary.

Thread: Session Report

At this point, Dan decided to take his leave, and we were down to five. It was early, but no one really felt like anything too long or complicated. Since Steve and Lisa had such strong childhood memories of Clue, I thought it was a great time to bring out Clue: The Card Game.

I'm not a big fan of deduction games myself, but I certainly like this one a lot better than the original boardgame. Mainly I like it more because 1) you don't have the tiresome rolling dice to slowly trek from room to room of the mansion, 2) Many of the cards involve several players, so it feels like everyone is involved more, and 3) both of these qualities make the game play faster, I think.

Anyway, Paul, Bob and I were all daunted by the fact that one of Lisa's first comments was something to the effect of, "Hey, with these sheets I can't use my usual notation!" Notation? Oh crap, we're doomed. Lisa and Steve, having been hardcore Clue players as kids, apparently have sophisticated formulae and logarithms, combined with intricate hieroglyphics and codes in order to discern the meaning of every question, glance, or belch. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Paul told us that when he played as a kid, they weren't allowed to take notes at all, relying only on memory of what cards had been seen. Yikes. Me, I'm somewhere in between, taking some notes and relying on observation and gut instincts.

More to my surprise than anyone else's, that worked! I ended up making the correct guess, and pretty much just in the nick of time as everyone was closing in pretty fast. Greg (W), Lisa, Steve, Paul, Bob.

Paul had still not arrived, so we thought we might be able to get in one more quickie. This time it was Clue, the Card Game. I like this version much better than traditional Clue. It still has the same deduction requirements, but with the addition of action cards and the removal of having to trudge through the mansion, it plays much faster, a definite plus. Unfortunately, for some reason this game took a bit longer than the last one. Paul arrived before we were done, and had to watch us struggle to the end. I was first to hazzard a guess, and made a bad assumption. I'm out. Steve tried next, and for some reason mistakenly used my guess to eliminate the correct solution as well. Steve's out. So, I guess Peter wins, right? Sure, we'll give him the victory. But just out of curiosity, we had him make an accusation as well, and he too was wrong! Each one of us had mis-heard or mis-marked our clue pad in a different way to make us all the worst detectives in the world. I'm generally not a fan of deduction games, but this one is fast enough that I actually like it. Players: Peter (W), Steve, Greg.
Played this one three-player today - it's a fun, light deduction game that fits the 30 minute time frame fairly well. While there is some luck of the draw, it's quick enough that the slight chaos thus introduced doesn't bother me.

Jeff managed to nail the suspect - Mrs. White escaping via Train to The Alamo. Susan and I were both hot on Mrs. Whites trail, and had narrowed the means of escape down to either the train or the Automobile, but neither of us were sure where she was going . . .

A good, short deduction game, with a bit more to it than most "filler" type games.

Thread: User Review

Essentially, Clue: The Card Game takes basic Clue, takes away all the annoying bits (mainly the movement - although there is a slightly annoying replacement I'll get to in a moment), and leaves the deduction bits there, thus making it quite a bit superior to standard Clue, at least to my tastes.

The object of the game is to identify the elements of the crime . . . from the Elements of the crime which are: Suspect, of which three are male and three female, Escape Vehicle, which come in Blue or Red, Flying and Non-Flying varities, and Destinations, which come in varities split (unevely) between North/South and East/West.

A turn consists of taking a card, and either following it's instructions, or using the one card you are allowed to keep. This is where the luck factor enters the game, as there are pretty wide variations between the desirability of the cards - the one that allows you to make a suggestion fron any where is clearly superior to the one that allows you to either move or make a suggestion from your current location. Each player has a location marker in front of them, and they must change them out when they move (or if another player moves to their location - thus taking the marker and replacing it with another). Moderately annoying, but not nearly so much as the movement in standard Clue, and since the entire game takes 20-45 minutes, it doesn't seem as big of a deal.

Initially, the game seemed to be pretty simple - but eventually, it became clear that you could deduce quite a bit based on what other people asked, and who or what the responses where (even if you didn't see the specific response, knowing that another player has a "male suspect card", for instance, can eventually be huge). While luck of the draw in drawing good action cards can make a major difference, ability to deduce the elements of the crime, from what you know and are able to find out as well as what you are able to deduce from others questions and responses will win out more often than not.

All in all, Clue: The Card Game is a nice riff on Clue, taking what can often be a tedious exercise in dice rolling (the board game) and distilling out of it a pleasant, 20-45 minute deduction game.

This met expectations as Clue without the silliness of the board or the die rolling. The additional groupings (male and female characters, red and blue, as well as land, sea, and air transports, and north, south, east, and west locations) added interest and challenge to the game. The Action card drawing mechanic worked fine and added variety, and on almost every turn, you were able to do something useful. I think Black Vienna is still a little more of a pure deduction game, but to be compared with that classic is pretty high praise in our neck of the woods. Rating: 7 out of 10.
