OK...so it is 9pm I move into the Dinning Room and go to pull a Dev card and there are none to pick. Do I? a) Shuffle all the cards, discard 2, then pick a Dev card to cover moving into the dinning room using the 10pm hour? OR b)Shuffle all the cards, discard 2, time passes and then move into my next room and continue the game normally?

Slightly confused...but I love this game...2 plays, Dead twice!!

Thread: In a bizarre reversal, jeRm! actually saves the world!

It was a dark and stormy night,. I stood in the foyer of a very odd looking home, the clock on the wall showed 9pm. I am not sure exactly why I am here only that I pulled the last straw and was thrown from the car and told "save the cheerleader, save the world." I looked at the others in the van curiously when they said this, and was thrown out. I then heard them yelling in the distance "forget the cheerleader, stop the zombies!"

So here I am. I cross the foyer to step into a dark dank room. It seems to be some kind of temple with weird occult symbols on the floor. I look around a bit and find a nice chainsaw. This should make things much easier, I think. I look around some more and find the Zombie Totem that I have read about, and oddly enough there is an ice-cold can of Dr. Pepper. This is now considered a great day!

I step through the other end of the room and into some kind of storage room. Very odd house. Someone needs to check the references of their architect. I look around a little and find a golf club, I drink down that sweet nectar of the gods, Dr. Pepper, and begin to wonder how I am going to get out of this room. As soon as I finish talking to myself three zombies bust through the wall in front of me. Good thing I have a chainsaw handy. No I definitely need a shower.

Walking through the busted wall I find myself in the Dining Room, seems a nice enough place. I them hear the grandfather clock strike 10pm. I had better hurry up, because bad things always happen at midnight.

I step through the sliding glass door onto the patio. I get a very odd feeling and my stomach sinks. I don't like the look of this back yard. I walk into the yard right into four more zombies. Wow, this chainsaw has come in handy. I give a couple of revs and run out of gas. Well that stinks, at least I still have the golf club.

I walk a little farther to see the garage. Funny I think this kind of pad would have an attached garage. While talking to myself about another architectural blunder a bat swoops down and poops in my eye. That stings! I cower on the side of the garage and clean the guano out of my eye. I feel a little better. I spot a nice seating area ahead.

Nice seating area my foot! How did I miss the four zombies drinking Dead Guy ale? They sure don't miss me and it is on! The golf club and I dispatch them, but they hand a couple of good blows. I miss my chainsaw.

I stumble over to the garden. Hey! Fresh carrots! I munch a couple of carrots and feel much, much better. I have a renewed since of hope. I keep walking into more yard and hear a scream. As I listen to see where the scream came from I hear the grandfather clock in the dining room chime 11pm. I really should have closed that sliding door.

I keep walking in this huge back yard and stumble upon a graveyard. This has to be the oddest house ever. The tombstones a disheveled and it seems most of the graves are open and oddly enough I smell fresh blood. Remembering my butchering days the blood doesn't smell like animal blood. I really shouldn't have been bending down to check out the open graves.

Jumped by five zombies! Seriously you take down a couple of their buddies with a chainsaw and a golf club and they are seriously pissed. Actually it was probably the fact I busted up their Dead Guy ale party. I understand why they are coming after me now. Fortunately I still have my handy golf club. I take after a brutal scrap. I quickly bury the zombie totem and listen to apparently many more zombies around me drop dead like they are Fred.

I saved the world from zombies, but I just really want to take a shower.

There! In order to solve the problem I've been having with updating the file in the archives, I decided to simply delete it and upload everything anew. This time around I've uploaded two separate files - one DOCX and one RTF, so now you don't have to waste any bandwidth downloading both versions when you're only after one of them

Also included in these ZIP files are instructions on how to fold your own box for storage and those foldable characters I showed earlier.

So, merry Christmas in advance or something! I can finally consider myself done with this game and move on.

Looks like ZiP already has the best graphics of any of their releases — the rest look like they were collaged together from some cheap clip-art CD-ROM. o_O

(I know, gameplay is more important … but aesthetics are nice too. Part of what I like about board/card games is the physical appeal of the components.)

I figure what's going on is that people are paying Andrew for his time and materials. It takes work to put together the game, and if someone is happy to pay for a copy instead of making their own, then that's great. If they weren't going to put the time into making their own copy, then they probably would never have played. With Andrew selling some copies, they have a chance to play.

Now, if I was gonna sell some copies, I'd ask Andrew to hold off, but I have long sold out of the nice copies of ZimP that I made, and I don't expect to print any more.

And, with the upcoming release of ZimP the 1-8 player game from Cambridge Games Factory, the more people exposed to the solo game, the better. These people are very likely to want to buy the multiplayer game.

So yeah, I'm not concerned about it. Anyone is free to do the work of printing copies for someone else for a fee.

But I changed so many things that after a while, it started to get a life of its own...

You're right about WWII. My girlfriend, who didn't give a rat's ass about WWII last year, has completely changed since she saw Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers. Now she's all "Cool!
Thanks for the comments, ribosome.

So...

1) No, the Explosives don't count toward your 2 Items limit (and I'll add a quick note on that on the next version of the rulebook)

2) Yes, you have spotted a typo. The cartridge adds *1* use to the Flare Gun (since it's a cartridge, not "cartridges"), and I will put up a replacement card very soon (probably when I upload the Scenario Cards and the new, better rules, with even less typos and even more Scenarios).

I agree that the "XXX in my pocket" could use their own entries, since they can easily get lost in the shuffle, and some of them really are different from each other...
Thanks for giving the game a try, and for the great session report. Do you agree?Well, I own Agricola (and have for months now), and haven't given it a try yet. So perhaps zombie farmers would indeed be enough to make me give it a try.

Thread: First two plays of ZimP

After seeing Tiggers' session report (Shortest game. EVAR!) earlier this week on the front page, I explored the Zombie in my Pocket game page, and downloaded the game file. One only needs to print three pages (1 page each of rules, cards, and tiles). A little cutting with a ruler and utility knife and I was ready for a test ride. A very simple little game, though it did raise a few questions which I'll post at the bottom.

My first try was remarkably similar to Tiggers' report. Starting in the foyer, the first room I explored was the Evil Temple, where I slipped in some nasty goo (health -1; now 5). I avoided wetting myself while locating the totem.

From the temple, I wandered into the Dining Room, where I battled four zombies using only my fists (health -3; now 2).

I proceeded immediately to the Patio, when I remembered I had a candy bar in my pocket: I savored the incredible Dove milk chocolate (health +1; now 3).

From dim light of the patio, I wandered into the garden, where I came across three zombie farmers (see postscript). It was all I could do to avoid being planted myself (health -2; now 1). I helped myself to some fresh produce (health +1; now 2). I was wounded and in pain, and it took time to steel my nerves; cowering in the dark (health +3; now 5).

Finally, resolved to see this through, I continued to the graveyard, where I felt my body shiver. In the distance, I heard the peel of a church bell striking 10:00. I began to dig as quickly as I could, when three zombies burst from nearby graves, trying to send me to my own (health -2; now 3). After sending them back to their long sleep, I was able to bury the evil totem. In the distance, I thought I could hear a scream carried on the wind.

[It took longer to write the above report than to actually play the game, so I decided to try again.]

Passing through the arched passage from the foyer, I found myself in the kitchen, where three zombies were cooking up some foul-smelling concoction. After dispatching them (health -2; now 4), I tasted the dark, oily broth, and was surprised by a sudden sense of vigor (health +1; now 5). I opened a door to find the bathroom, and I remember thinking: "how could four zombies hide quietly in this small space?" (health -3; now 2). After they were completely washed up (out?), I returned to the kitchen.

Well, in the short time I spent in the bathroom, apparently four new zombie chefs showed up. I quickly ran back into the bathroom (-1 health; now 1), bolting the door and hiding in the bathtub, shaking uncontrollably (health +3; now 4).

Sensing I was spending too much time dilly-dallying, I burst back into the kitchen, hoping (successfully) that I would avoid peeing myself. The other door lead me to the Evil Temple, where I slipped on some nasty goo (health -1; now 3). While looking for the totem, I came across a can of soda, the tower bell striking 10:00 in the distance. I quickly drank it (health +2, now 5), and pocketed the totem.

Leaving the temple, I found myself at a dead end in the storage room, where a bat pooped in my eye (health -1; now 4). I found a grisly femur (+1 attack; now 2) just before three zombies burst through a blank wall. In the resulting battle, that femur gave me a real "leg up" (health -1; now 3). Again, I found myself cowering in the corner (health +3; now 6), afraid to explore the dark hole left by the zombies passage through the wall.

Struggling against the terror, I forced myself through the opening, where I found myself in the Family Room. Seeing "The Family Guy" playing on the telly, I felt a spark of hope (health +1; now 7). Stepping through to the Dining Room, four more zombies were looking to serve me (to each other). Swinging my spare femur like a madman, I drove them away (health -2; now 5).

I stepped out to the Patio, where I could sense my impending doom (-1 health; now 4), as the tower bell struck 11:00. I thought: "I've got to get this over!"

I quietly approached a sitting area, where SIX zombies hung around, bitching about something. I heard screams of "Tastes great!", and "Less filling!" before they sensed my presence. Knowing I could not survive their onslaught if discovered, I slinked back to the Patio, scratching myself in a thorn bush (health -1; now 3).

I struck off in another direction, to find myself in the Yard. I tasted something icky in my mouth (-1 health; now 2). That oily broth was better the first time. I cowered under the swingset (health +3; now 5), sensing that my time is running out, so it's fortunate that my next discovery was the Graveyard.

Atop a headstone, I found a(nother) can of soda (product placement available here for a small fee), drinking it while listening closely for the peal of the bell that would seal my doom (health +2; now 7). It did not ring. I buried the totem, smelling blood in the air. In the distance, the dust of disintegrating zombies was carried by the wind.

A short time later (one card left), the bell sounded midnight.

***************

Postscript (Questions):

1) It isn't directly addressed in the rules I downloaded, but I assumed that you did NOT have to draw for your starting position in the foyer (the first draw would be when you leave the foyer. Is this correct?

2) I think zombie farmers might make Agricola sufficiently appealing to give it another try.
Good job on the game.

There are 2 questions I want to ask.
1) Do explosives count toward the 2 items limit?
2) The rules stated that the flare cartridge "add 1 use" to flare gun, but the player aid card read "add 2 uses". Which one is right?

I think all these "xxx in my pocket" games should get it's own entry on this site.
Thread: scenario booklet(s)

I am going to make a pdf pocket-mod of the available scenarios (and the 1.75 rules) for ZimP. I was going to use the scenarios that are mentioned in the threads here that don't require any additional things. I noticed that a few of the scenarios I will post which scenarios I have used in this list, so if there are some that you want to make sure are in/or if you make a new one put it in this list. I will try to put up the scenarios when a booklet is filled. Thanks.

(I thought this would be a good idea after seeing Amiral amazing amount of scenarios for Airborne in my Pocket.)

Yeah, listen to what the others are saying: do it, man! Even if it's in crayon!

Nice graphics are not necessary if a game (or a variant) is well-designed. Good ideas are a precious resource. As for graphic artists, like they say: "build it, and they will come".
Thread: Re: Good game system for any kind

I agree that the graphics really help to get something printed and played the first time, and I'm really grateful to Kwanchai for the great artwork because of this.

However, I don't want that to be a roadblock for any variant designers. This game, as Sam pointed out, started out with hand-drawn tiles because I'm not a graphic designer. If the game is good, someone with graphics talent will pick it up and make it pretty. We've seen it here, in Zombie Plague, and with Free Trader (as well as, I'm sure, many others that I don't know about).

Make the game, it's worth it. And if you get a chance, send me a copy, because I have so many games to print-and-play that I'm running out of time to get to ZimP variants.

Actually don't worry about the graphics. The 1st edition graphics were hand drawings by Jeremiah! I actually still play with those original tiles every once in awhile. They have a certain aesthetic appeal!!

Just draw something up for your idea and add/improve on it as time goes on.

Thread: Good game system for any kind

I believe we all agree that ZIMP is a very simple and easy, GOOD too.
it's a game system that will feed into any theme, as we have see variants available.

I believe players who have play ZIMP, their mind are fill with all kind of variants of their own. Use ZIMP to create their variant need to have nice graphics/images to put onto the tiles.

I have to say that because of graphics, i tried ZIMP.
I too have different variant thought, but looking for graphics to fit into your variant is not easy and if you are not good in drawings/computer graphics.

many thanks to Jeremiah for giving us a simple good game system that works for all.
